Do I have to render every sequence?

So here's the situation, and I am trying to obtain as close to HD as I can.
I import my ACVHD footage from my sony cameras into FCE. I then place these into my timeline which I name Sequence 1. I move them around and edit how I'd like. Then I create a new sequence which I call Sequence 2. I drag Sequence 1 down into my Sequence 2 time line so I have a nice clean work space on one track. I then add a few graphics here and there. For purpose of this question, I know my graphics should have been the correct sizes but they are what they are. Sequence now is entirely red barred for me to render, but I don't. I then create another new sequence which I will call Sequence 3. When I drage Sequence 2 from my browser into Sequence 3, that too is red barred. But I add some more graphics into Sequence 3. Now I render Sequence 3 so all is good. So I want to export Sequence 3 into a quicktime movie. Since Sequence 3 is fully rendered, do I need to have Sequence 2 rendered to obtain maximum quality? Or since Sequence 3 is comprised of Sequence 2 as long as I export Sequence 3 everythign is all good? Or do I need to render each sequence as I build the project?

If the underlying media (sequences and/or clips) need to be rendered but aren't, FCE will have to render them during export. Not the ideal time to be rendering, as it will at a minimum increase your export time. Plus if you export unrendered material to a QT reference file, the rendered material will be put in the reference file itself. Not what a reference file is intended for.
You should investigate why your second sequence needs to be rendered if the material in sequence 1 did not need to be rendered. Does sequence 2 have a different sequence setting (easy setup)? Did you apply filters to the items in sequence 2? You mentioned adding graphics - if they are non-standard size and you allowed FCE to autoconform the sequence (#2) when you inserted the graphics clips, that could be the cause of the need to render everything.
With FCE, it is best to have all media clips be the same codec (DV or AIC) and frame size - it minimizes problems. Also render as you go along, not at export time.

  • Do i have to render every time??

i have a simple piece of text in my browser (named the default name "text") that i use over and over in lots of sequences. i stuck a drop shadow in and now i have to render every time? is that right? i didn't have to render before; is there a way to just render the one time?
    thanks!

Create your title, put it in and empty timeline, but do NOT render it.
    File>Export>QuickTime Conversion.
Set the format type to QuickTime. Click on Options and set the codec to Animation. Set Colors to Millions+. Export.
When you bring this back into your project and put it over video in the timeline, it will still have to be rendered to composite over video, so I'm not sure it will gain you anything.

  • Have to render every time I add text

    Hello,
I'm subtitling a large project using FCP7 and every time I add text I have to render it the text.
This is slowing down my workflow. How can I eliminate the rendering?

What codec does your source footage use?
The source footage was VOB that was exported to Quicktime using ProRes 422 LT
What codec is used in your Sequence setting?
In sequence settings the compressor is set also to Apple ProRes 422 LT
    What are the RT settings?
Render Control Settings: Filters & Flame Blending Selected. Frame Rate and Resolution 100% Coded same as Sequence Codec. Quality Normal. Always use best quality is deselected.
What are you using to create the text?
    Just the FCP Text Generator.
If you are using external titling software, what color space and format are the files saved in?
    Nope.
Where is the source footage located on your computer?
On an external drive, and the project file is on my internal hard drive.
What Mac model are you using, which version of Mac OS X, what CPU and how much RAM?
    iMac from 2006, 10.5.8 2GHz Intel Core Duo 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

  • Why do I have to render every video clip?

Every clip I put in FCE has to be rendered, why? Is there a setting I have to change? I have a canon hv-20 and I'm using the 1080i setting in the easy setup menu. Thanks for any help!

If they are identical then I can't help you. There is no reason why you would have to render. Which is that you have to render, video or audio or both? The render line is divided is divided into two thin stripes, upper for video, lower for audio.

  • Capturing 24p, and have to render every clip.

Hi all. Thanks for your time. After reading all the 24p articles in here, I thought I had it straight: I shot 24p normal (16:9) on an xl2, and captured it on FCP 4.5 using the "DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic" setting for Capture as well as for the Sequence Preset. However, I still have to render (red line) ever time I bring a clip into the timeline! What am I doing wrong?? Please someone help, and thank you for your time.

You shooting in PAL land? You have a PAL camera????
Stating the obvious, but thought I'd get that out of the way...
Do us a favor... find the item properties window for the CAPTURED clips and read it down for us.
Then... Apple-Zero the sequence you've created and read down THOSE settings.
    Thanks,

  • I have to render every time i move a clip!

i am a musician and im trying to use fcp to edit my videos to match my final product with my mp3 final project audio from garage band. i recorded in photobooth and recorded at the same time as garage band using my condenser mic for better audio. i changed my files to pro res 422, but every time i move any clip some portion needs to be re rendered, ive set the sequence to pro res 422 but i still cant figure out whats going on. i have a drum, piano, vocal, guitar videos that all match to the audio but i cant really do much when it takes 14 minutes to render a 3 minute clip.
this is what it looks like.

Your problem stems from the video recording software you used. The clips in your browser are all showing as frame rates ranging from 9fps to 11fps. But your sequence is 29.97. FCP is trying to stretch those video files out to match the sequence frame rate, but it requires rendering to do so.
Some video capture programs produce videos that are in some way incompatible with FCP because FCP reads the fps wrong. Snapz Pro is one, there are probably others. If you actually recorded the files in 29.97, then you need to run them through compressor to make them FCP compatible. Choose a pro res preset, but make sure that in the video settings that 29.97 is selected (and not "current").

  • Do you really have to render every single HDV clip?

    Don't remember reading that anywhere...
Starting a new project that someone handed over to me with projects and media all ready to go.
I open up the timelines and eveery clip needs to be rendered in the timeline and the source media plays back all clunky in the viewer.
Am I doing something wrong or is this just HDV editing?
    As always, thanks in advance....

This project was a freaking nightmare. I thought it would take three weeks, it took thre months.
He capture the footage wrong somehow, I ddon't know, but no matter what settings I changed I couldn't avoid the rendering.
Tp top it all off, he captured the audio directly into Pro Tools so it was 1988 all over agin, synching up the audio files with the video.
I am giving the director the final dvd next week after I finish the menu. The editing is all done THANK GOODNESS!!

  • I have to render to watch smooth playback help!

I meet all the requirements so hardware isn't the problem. Plus I can watch it smoothly in the monitor and once rendered, what's going on!
Is there a way I can render it all once and for all, so I don't have to render every 2 seconds?
I've tried every single sequence preset and that didn't work either.
And yes I have the new update, hardware or software, or whatever isn't the problem. I've been working with Premiere Pro for 6 years now.
    Please help.
thanks, I really appreciate it, is very important

My previous computer (Intel D875PBZ motherboard with Pentium4 3.2Ghz and ATI Radeon 9600xt and 2 Gig DDR 400 Ram and 2 hard drives and PPro3) worked OK with standard definition AVI from a tape camcorder... albeit a bit slow when it came time to have Encore transcode the AVI to create a DVD (so I would just start the process before I went to bed and it was done and the ISO was created when I got up in the morning)
When I decided to switch to HD and CS5, I read every hardware message there was for about 6 months... even before CS5 was released... to decide what hardware to buy to build a new computer (link in my last message)
Knowing ahead of time that a highly compressed codec was going to require a "strong" computer, I made sure to buy the best I could afford... and I have not been disappointed in the advice I've received from this forum
To the OP - refuse to believe all you want, but you have people here who use PPro to make a living (not me, I'm just a home hobbyist) plus the people who wrote the http://ppbm5.com/ benchmark all telling you that you need a more powerful computer to EFFECTIVELY use PPro5
Yes, you can use PPro5 with a "minimal" computer... as long as you are prepared to wait and render and wait some more
But, if you don't want to wait and render and wait some more you need to start saving to build a better computer
Added - as far as editing a highly compressed -vs- less compressed format...
The DV AVI files I create for my wife's computer are about 13Gig per hour, so the files are large but the CPU requirements are much less... for her to edit, I simply bought a 1Terabyte hard drive for all of her video files (that will give her several years of video file space at her usual 5-15 minutes per subject)
The MTS/MP4 files are actually smaller at about 12Gig per hour, for HiDef, so while the data transfer requirement is similar, those files require a MUCH faster and more powerful CPU to decode during editing
Her Flip camera was about $140 and my Canon Vixia was about $1k but they BOTH require a strong computer to edit natively without conversion
So, Hunt is right... people buy an inexpensive camera like the Flip and are then surprised that their old computer is not up to the job of editing such a "consumer" format

  • I have to render everything

I first had Final Cut Pro version 4.0.1 and it was working flawlessly(except for some batch capture errors). Then i upgraded it to 4.1 and imediatly to 4.5 HD.Now i have to render every transition, filter(color correction),title....Sometimes i even have to render old reopened final cut files!
I have no external hardware, only DAC-100 analog to DV converter.
    Can anyone help me?
    PowerMacG5 1,6Ghz,768M RAM ...   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Pro Tools LE 6.2.2+Digi002, FCP HD 4.5 ...

How much RAM do you have? I hope not 768 M. That would be your first problem if so.

  • Importing leaves me with audio a few seconds off and I still have to render

When I import the last few times, I have to render the sequence after wards. this means that I cannot edit from the sequence in the file. Frustrating! Also, my sound is always a few seconds off after I import. So I have to shift the sound or the video over to match.
Anyone know why is this happening?
    FCP 5.0.4

That is all the details that I can think of putting up. Oh and I have 400gigs available on my drive if that makes any difference.
Also, i just digitized again, but only for one minute of footage and it was fine. So I cheered and said yahhhh! So then I went to digitize the entire one hour tape again, and the sound is still off.
so I though maybe it drifted because for some reason it didn't record at the same rate. But the beginning is off by the same amount as the end and middle. I just don't get why this is happening. I export and save the sequence, I can then edit from the browser, but it is my understanding that I will lose some quality that way.
So, until I can figure this out, I'm stuck with editing by browsing the footage in the actual timeine instead of the browser. eeeeeek!

  • Why do I have to render all of my HDV 1080i60 MultiCam Sequence

I have two HDV camra angle's in my multicam sequence.
I did realtime cuts between them but why do i need to render the whole sequence. I have half an hour of HDV, that takes along time. It also take's hours to render a portion of the video that i sent to motion for titling. This is really slowing me down.
Do you always have to render a multicam sequence?

No it wouldn't have to render except for effects that aren't real time.
The problem with HDV is it's not an all "i" frame format. Only 1 in 15 frames is a whole frame, the rest of the frames only contain the difference between the frames before and after (sort of)... but if you don't edit on an i frame, the video has to be rewritten in effect, creating a new GOP structure. (Group of pictures with an i frame every 15... in long gop anyway... there's short gop too.)
Most all other codecs are all i frame codecs.. every frame's information is there... so it's easier for the computer to deal with it.
DVCPROHD will create files about 4 times larger than HDV, but they're still small enough to play from a firewire drive... no need for a fast array.

  • Every time FCPX starts I have to render my project

I experience a really awful problem...
Every time I start my project I have to re-render the whole timeline.
I'm using the latest version of everything, also from the CoreMelt plug-in I'm using in this project.
As long as the project is short this doesn't happen, but after 2 minutes project lenght this happens all the time.
I have 64 GB RAM so this should not be the problem.
The plugin developer stated that this is a FCPX background rendering problem, but when I switch it off it's not getting better.
Then I have to render it manually, before I can edit/watch the project.
I have one of the fastest MaPro's available 12 core and I work on a SSD-RAID0 with highest Data-Rates...
So what is the problem and how to solve this??

    wolfgang,
does this happen if you delete the coremelt fx from the clips ?
I have never had this problem. But I did demo the coremelt plugs and they gave me nothing but H++++
Not saying they are the culprit... But if FCPx was at fault I think we'd be hearing more of it...
Try creating a fresh project with no core melt of other effects in it but with the same clips.. Then render the timeline. Quit FCPx and relaunch and see if the problem persists...
    If it does
    Try deleting
    /Users/YourFolder/Library/Caches/ EVERYTHING FCPx
    /Users/YourFolder/Library/Preferences/ EVERYTHING FCPx
Reboot with shift held.. Then log it.. Then reboot normally

I bet this has come up before but I couldn't find a thread about it. I'm working with FCE and everytime I edit something I have to render everything thereafter. That can't be right, can it? What do I have to do to work more efficient?
