Do I HAVE to restore my iPOD in order to be able to put music on it again?

I recently had to wipe out my computer due to viruses, so I lost all my files, music, etc. However, now I wish to put more music onto my iPOD, but iTunes is telling me that my iPOD is synched with another library and can only be synched to one at a time. I de-authorized my other computer, and now I don't know what else to do. There has to be a way to do this without me losing all my music on my iPOD. I REALLY do not want to restore it. Please help me if you can. Thank you.

Hey there,
You can set your iPod up to manually manage music and videos. Instructions on how to do that can be found [HERE|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535].
Otherwise, another solution is to copy all the songs currently on your iPod to your new iTunes library. There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes.
It all depends on if you have a Mac or PC with how you copy your music over. The first link after the Apple support document below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your new computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer." From there, restore your iPod and sync it with your new library. I did notice you did not want to go this route though.

  • TS3195 My Ipod is reading "Ipod is Disabled. Connect to Itunes.." So i have to restore my Ipod in order for it to work. My question is how can i retrieve all my photo's taken on my Ipod before restoring it to its manufacture state?

My son decided to play with my ipod for his amusement and starting entering multiple codes as a password. Even though i had already set the option not to lock after multiple attempts, it ended up disabling anyway. So now my Ipod reads "Ipod is Disabled, Connect to Itunes." I connected it to Itunes and all i get is another error message saying:"The Ipod is locked and can not connect to Ipod." After reading multiple articles turns up i have to restore my ipod to its manufactured state. Before i do that i want to see if anyone can help me in retrieving or transferring over all my photos that were taken on that Ipod before i can even start the Recovery/Restore process. PLEASE HELP!
Thanks in advance to all who reply :-)

There is no way to get them from a disable iPod. That is pat of the security offered by the screen-lock passcode.
    - If the photos were on the iPod when y last backed up you can resore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - If you use PhotoStream yo may be able to get them from your stream. For how see:

Try doing a level reformat of the iPod's flash storage instead to see if that kills the restore loop using the instructions in the article below.

My ipod won't let me delete any photos, or download any apps, so I turned it off and back on when the itunes and usb symboyl appeared I just download Itunes, and i can only restore it, Will it delete everything?!?!

Yes, you need to restore. Here is how:
Plug your iPod into a computer with iTunes
Go into your iPod's section on the bar on the left hand side of iTunes
    Click restore
Confirm the restore with the dialog boxes that pop up.
When it is done, if you have a recent backup of your iPod in iTunes, you can tell it to use it.

  • I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that hasnt sync'd yet that i purchased on my ipod?

I have to restore my ipod touch, but where will my music be that i downloaded from my ipod? It hasnt sync'd to my computer yet because my ipod isnt 'recognized' by my computer, therefor I need to Restore it. But I dont want to restore it if I'm going to lose those songs...

I lost my music once because a faulty hard disk, I got in touch with iTunes support and got back most of it, except those that where pulled off the iTunes Store, but I am not sure what are the current policies. That is why I advice you to take it to the Apple Store, if it is a faulty unit you might get it replaced for free, who knows.

  • I have just restored my ipod touch after being disabled.  Now it is asking for pasword, can I cancel this so I don't have to use a password?

I have just restored my ipod touch after being disabled. Now it is asking for the passcode?  I still cant remember the passcode.  How do I go past this?

You'll have connect in recovery mode and set it up "as new ipod" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone and iPod touch software.
If the issue continues after updating and restoring your device, refer to this document.

I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes it says i have to restore my iopd touch to factory settings and will loose my files. I have a few films on there and they show up on my purchases. If i restore, will i be able to get my films back ? as at the moment my ipod wont work now untill i restore anyway.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Here's how to:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.

  • My ipod touch 4th generation says to connect to itunes. I did, and it says I have to restore my ipod for it to work. I have about 6,000 photos on there that I do not want to lose. What do I do?

My iPod touch 4th generation says on the screen to connect to iTunes. When i connected it to iTunes, it says i must restore my ipod for it to work. However, I have over 6,000 pictures that I've taken over the past two years that i do not want to lose. What do I do? I already tried resetting it by holding down the home/power button, that doesn't help.

  • How come I have to restore my iPod 3+4 times a day to get it to work?

I got my new iPod Classic (160gb) last thursday and was able to load every song I have finally last night after trying all weekend long. I also have to restore it about 3-4 times a day to get it to work at all. Am I doing something wrong here?

I'm having the same issue. I load music on, the iPod (160gb Classic, purchased last Sunday) freezes and once ejected (via the "safe" method to remove iPod), my iPod does not recognise any music. I restore, complete the process, load music on which is recognised, continue to load - and whammo - iPod no longer recognises that any tracks have been loaded.
Something is obviously wrong. In order to return this to the Apple Store in London, will I need to book an appointment at the Genius bar?? Or simply explain my issue to one of the sales staff. I plan on printing out and taking with me a couple of threads in this forum.
    Cheers.

  • Why do I have to restore my ipod touch every 2-3 months because something has become corrupt? Is there no way to restore my ipod while saving my data as well?

I constantly have problems with my ipod touch 4g. I previously owned an ipod touch 2g but I would always end up having to restore it because of something silly. This time, my 4g 8 gig ipod touch needs to be restored. I synced it to my desktop and I deleted some apps to free up space. After the sync, both itunes and my ipod show 0 bytes free and the "other" section takes up over 1 gig of space. Everyone says to restore it but I don't want to end up losing my data and music again. Is there anything I can do to keep my data and fix this little glitch?

All the music should be on the computer so you can just sync the music back to the iPod after you restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod. Regarding app data, just export (email/file sharing etc) as much as possible so you can import it back.
