Do I have to set up the 5Ghz wireless band network or is it automatic?

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on how I should best proceed.....
I have an old (7 years) Belkin 802.11g F1PI241EGau 'gateway' that was provided by my ISP when I switched over to their service in February 2006, which I use to access the Internet via ADSL.  I also have a 500 GB 802.11n Time Capsule Model A1302 which is connected to the Belkin via an Ethernet cable.  Until last week my network also consisted of 2 x 802.11g AirPort Expresses that I used to extend the range of my network throughout my house. Getting any of the devices to achieve reasonable 'reach' is challenging because the house is on three levels, has double brick walls and steel-reinforced concrete floors.
Last week I bought an 802.11n AirPort Express and, simultaneously, one of my 802.11g AirPort Expresses 'died' when I tried to re-configure my network to add the 802.11n AX to it.
I have read that the range of the 802.11n devices is much greater than 802.11g.  I decided to 'forget' my remaining 802.11g AirPort Express and see if my network would work with just the TIme Capsule and the new AirPort Express (both 802.11n).  It does.  The signal to my Apple TV is now only 3 bars, not 5, but it doesn't seem to affect its functionality.
As both the Time Capsule and the new AirPort Express are 802.11n they are both capable of functioning on the 5GHz band.  Is there an advantage to this? What should I do in AirPort Express to 'turn on' the 5GHz band?
Can the 5GHz band have the same wireless network name as the 2.4GHz band?
Apart from the Apple TV, we have two iPads (version 3), one iPhone 3GS, one iPhone 5 and a MacBook (late 2008 aluminium unibody) as 'clients' on the wireless network.
Lastly, when I set up my network I set the Time Capsule to 'Create a Network' but it is in 'Bridge' mode to avoid double NAT problems with the Belkin gateway. The Airport Express is set to 'Join a Network'.
If someone can tell me whether there is a better way to setup my network I would be very grateful.
Cheers
Tricia

"Nothing....if you have the simultaneous dual band version of the AirPort Express. It is already providing both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal"
I agree that "nothing" should be done but...
FWIW: Using Airport Utility 6.3.2 I get the following options for my Airport Express 1st Generation.  There is a similar option for Airport Utility 5.6.1 under the "Radio Mode" pull-down.  Using Wi-Fi Explorer ($3 on the App Store) I see that only a 2.4GHz signal is available even when standing directly next to it (vs both a 2.4 GHz and 5GHz signal from my Airport Extreme 802.11ac)
Point being that the Airport Express(n) does not appear to provide both 2.4 and 5 at the same time.
This Airport Express (n) is configured for a "roaming" network, meaning it is connected via ethernet back to the cable modem which also has the Airport Extreme (ac) connected via ethernet.
As an aside, and since I walked all the way over to the barn to check this out, my MacPro appears to still be using the Airport Extreme for its connection even though Wi-Fi Explorer shows a much weaker signal.  I am in the barn now.  The Airport Express is the top line in the graph which when at the house, disappears on occasion although it is always accessible via Airport Utility.  (The Airport Express(n) is the third in the list)
I am using Airport Utility 6.3 which shows that the Airport Extreme (ac) is the AP my Mac is running through.
My MacPro is the third Mac Address in this list 70:56:...
Interesting too, now that I am in the Barn, both Airport Utility applications do NOT have access to the Airport Express (n) even though Wi-Fi Explorer continues to show a strong signal from that system.  (BTW, I also have 4 bars of wireless in the menu bar)  (FWIW: I also quit and restarted Airport Utility)  Based on further information below, it appears that my MacPro is NOT switching to a 2.4GHz network.
As an experiment, I turned off my wireless on the MacBook and turned it back on again.  Airport Utility now shows me connected to the Airport Express(n) in the barn.
Here is Wi-Fi Explorer as I return to the house (approximately 125ft)  Note the colors have been reallocated and don't match the previous screenshots.  The list has also changed.
At this point, my menubar on the MacPro usually shows 2 bars but often rises to 4.  However, it is clear my MacPro is still connected to the Airport Express in the barn because response is horrid and Airport Utility still shows that AP is servicing my MacPro.  (I cannot show that screen shot since it is a popup that disappears when I move the cursor.)
To switch back to the Airport Extreme (ac), I have to shut the wireless on my Mac off and turn it back on again.
I assume that I am connected to the 5GHz subnet since Airport Utility shows my data rate is 450Mps.
Something I had noticed until now, it also shows that my PHY is 802.11a/n.
This brings up several questions, which I should post somewhere else since my only purpose here was to suggest that an Airport Express (n) does NOT broadcast in both wireless ranges at the same time.

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

What is the exact notification you are waiting? This could be possible that the device has already been opened once. Don't you think?

I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

Same with my new mac mini.
Got it brand new via the online shop.
Happy to start with the new mac i really got dissapointed by the fact that it`s impossible to pair the wireless keyboard unless you first connect a USB keyboard to the mac mini and start the configuration.
    THIS S.U.C.K.S. !!!
No hint at all from apple that you first have to connect the USB keyboard.
I had to borrowed a USB keyboard from my neighbour :-((
After setting things up it was no problem at all to establish the BT connection with the keyboard.
    Works fine now.

  • Is it possible to have an HP and Canon wireless printer on the same wireless home network?

I presently have a Canon MP560 printer on my wireless home network. I do not have this printer installed on my computer. I purchased an HP 3520e-All-In-One hoping I could have both on my home network.  My os is Windows 7 64bit. I tried to install the HP 3520e, and received the following error message - "Your printer failed to join the wireless network", and said the issue was that MAC address filtering may be enabled on my computer, which it is not.  It is disabled.  Question:  Is there a workaround to have two wireless printers on the same network, and if so, what is it?  Thank you so much for your help.

    Hi,
I actually have 3 printers from 3 vendors on my home network. I have tested using MAC filter and w/o MAC filter, no problem at all. The MAC filter should be on the router, not from your computer. Have you checked that ? My suggestion: use a computer on the network to connect the printer using USB cable then setup from there. The printer will use EXISTING setup from your computer and you won't need to enter security key.
    Regards.

  • IMac and Netgear DGND3300v2 on 5Ghz wireless n network problem

Hi guys, I'm can't seem to be able to connect my iMac (bought around Christmas 2010) to my Netgear router on 5Ghz wireless N properly.
Everytime I restarted the iMac, it will automatically connect to the 5Ghz network as I have set it up before. However, as soon as I start trying to use internet in any way, the connection just drops and all I can find then is my router on the 2.4Ghz network, running 802.11g.
I know the iMac can definitely connect to the wireless N network because I also have Windows 7 Ultimate on it. When I boot to Windows 7, the network works flawlessly. No connection dropping whatsoever.
Also my MacBook can connect to the 5Ghz with no problems. And it was bought in late 2008.
My iMac is running Mac OSX 10.6.7. In system profiler, the Airport tab has the following information:
    Software Versions:
      Network Preference: 6.2.1 (621.1)
      AirPort Utility: 5.5.2 (552.11)
      IO80211 Family: 3.1.4 (314.1.1)
    Interfaces:
    en1:
Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F)
    firmware Version: Atheros 9280: 2.1.14.5
    Locale: APAC
Country Code: AL (shouldn't this be AU or something?)
    Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n
    Supported Channels: 1 to 13
    Wake on wireless: supported
    Status: not associated
Local wireless networks: just a bunch of 802.11g and 802.11n running on 2.4Ghz in my building.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance!

I've seen some threads saying changing the security on the wireless to WPA2-PSK will solve the problem, and I checked - my router is running using WPA2-PSK.

  • Setting up/extending a Dual Band network

Any recommendations regarding dual-band vs. the n/b/g blended network? Is it possible to set up a dual-band network on an AEBS-n and also boost the "n" side of the network with an AX-n? I've searched the discussions but have not found much on the topic, other than some comments regarding iMacs not liking "n" or 10.5.3 or airport utility 5.3.1 or maybe the "automatic" channel setting or possibly something else.....
    A little history:
We have 3 iMacs (new 3.06 Ghz, 17" late 2006, 20" late 2006), 3 MacBook Pros, and one dual-2.5 Ghz G5 that all shared internet access through a Motorola modem/Comcast cable via an Airport Extreme Base Station b/g. The AEBS was in the basement and configured as a WDS with an Airport Express b/g that served to extend the network's reach to the second floor and remodeled kitchen (new steel beams). This setup has worked nearly flawlessly for years until recently, when both of the older iMacs started experiencing intermittent airport signal drops--supremely annoying. The modem seemed to work fine, however, and the AEBS light stayed green and the G5 and MBPs weren't having issues (some running Tiger, some Leopard).
I thought that upgrading to Leopard (erase and install) might take are of any weird settings or corrupt files and thus improve the iMacs' airport connections, so I upgraded the first one, and it seemed to fix the problem--no drops of airport or internet for several hours. I then decided it was time to upgrade the network as well--swapping out the old b/g AEBS and AX for a new AEBS-n and AX-n. (Yes, I know, not too smart to change both the OS and the network at the same time ... but here we are.) Since the G5 in the basement can't connect to an "n" network, I decided to set up a Dual Band network with the AX-n acting as the old AX b/g had to extend the network.
This is what it looked like:
    cable modem ------>
AEBS-n ------> wireless to Airport Extreme-n ---> wireless to older iMacs and MBPs
AX b/g (connected via ethernet to AEBS) -----> wireless to the G5
This worked, sort of, in that all but the G5 could all pick up and join either the "n" or the b/g network. Problem was, the network was very unstable-- the airport signal would suddenly drop out for no reason then recover, or the airport icon would show a full 4 bars but have no internet connection. This was happening on all of the macs, perhaps more so on the two older iMacs, while the modem itself showed no change in status, and the AEBS-n light would remain green. When I removed the AX-N from the setup to see if that was causing a hiccup, the drops were a little less frequent but the kitchen iMac was marooned with 1, maybe 2 bars in the airport icon and the signal strength on the second floor was decreased. Oh, and the drops continued to happen. I've now reverted to a b/g-compatible network, which is better, but still hasn't prevented all of the drops.
    My questions are:
1-Any ideas about why the airport is acting wonky? Are 'n' networks proving to be more problematic than the old ones?
2-Is it possible to use an AX-n to extend the range of the "n" side of a dual band network?
2-If so, any ideas for improving the network's reliability?
3-If not, will going back to a b/g-compatible network negate the supposed speed benefits of 802.11n? Would I go back to using a WDS setup then?
I've tried so many different settings, combinations, configurations trying to get this up and working, that I'm ready to pull my hair out. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your reply. Looking back at my sorry attempt at a diagram, I realize I wasn't clear about a couple of things. The modem is connected via ethernet to the AEBS-n. The AEBS-n is connected via ethernet to the AE-b/g, which provides wireless coverage to the G5 and others. So far, everything is in the basement.
We live in an old house--no way to set up the network via ethernet--and so rely on the airport network to provide internet access to the computers on the first and second floors. In our old network, I had an AE-b/g as a WDS remote located in the kitchen that provided the first and second floors with their internet connection.
When I upgraded our network, I set up the new AEBS-n as a 5.0 Ghz an-only network (create a network/allow network to be extended) and connected the old AE b/g to it (bridge mode/create a network) to provide wireless internet for the G5. The iMac in the kitchen could hardly pick up the "n" signal at all, and it could receive only a weak signal from the b/g network. Lots of dropped airport signals and also lots of dropped internet connections. Strangely enough, the MacBookPros on the second floor could pick up both signals pretty strongly, but they, too, had lots of drops. The 2nd floor iMac was even worse than the kitchen iMac--spotty reception at best, and lots of drops. The G5 and the iMac in the basement, meanwhile, were fine--strong signal and only intermittent drops.
Hoping to extend the reach of the "n" network and thereby eliminate the drops, I added an AE-n to it (bridge mode/extend the network) and put it where the old b/g had been. This boosted the "n" signal to the kitchen and 2nd floor, but the drops seemed to become more frequent and for longer durations. Perhaps this was merely coincidence, but it made me question whether adding the AE-n in a dual-band network was advisable. Not finding any info that specifically addressed that scenario, I turned to the discussion forum for guidance.
Further research leads me to believe that the iMacs' issues may be more due to their being iMacs in the first place, but I was still left with a very unreliable dual band network for the rest of the Macs. Reconfiguring the AEBS-n and AE-n as an n (b/g compatible) network has led to far fewer drops, but like you, I'd prefer to keep my  "an" devices separated from the G5 to make use of their higher wireless speed.
So....I guess what I need to know is whether anyone else been having so many dual band dropouts? Have you had any success in eliminating them? Have you successfully extended the "n" side of their dual band without adversely affecting stability?
As long as I know this isn't a lost cause, I'll give it another go and keep tweaking settings in hopes of finding a stable setup....

  • Why won't messages use my phone number as my ID for my messages when I have it set as the default?

I have gone through all of my settings since updating to iOS 8 and I made sure my phone number is listed as my default caller ID for messages and facetime (meaning I have logged out and back in again on my phone, iPad, AND Macbook....) but it's still using my Apple ID e-mail address and when someone texts me to my phone number it sends it as a text and not an Apple message.

You say that your account is blocked and that you have your Apple id back (?).
If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad.

  • If I import my pictures to iPhoto from an external HDD, does it mean I have 2 sets of the pictures?

If I import a folder from my external hdd to iPhoto library, does it mean I can remove the HDD, and I have 2 copy of folder?
And if the folder is 10gb in my HDD, does it also took 10gb in the Mac HDD after import to iPhoto?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

There is not an option below for Mavericks.  Both iMacs are running mavericks, and have screen sharing turned on.   I am trying to help my father with various tasks on his imac.  We are trying to share screens with Messages.  We are both able to initiate a request for screen sharing, however, the request never shows up on either screen. We have also tried connect to server via finder using VNC. This doesn't work either.  Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

    Hi Sandy Jay,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has a list of requirements for screen sharing that I would check as well:

To quickly view your computer’s audio and video chat capabilities, choose Video > Connection Doctor, then choose Capabilities from the Show pop-up menu.
    Cheers,
