Do I have to upgrade to Leopard to access my purchased items?

I went and tried to purchase the "Dr. Horrible" 3 episode series a couple days ago. I downloaded two of the episodes since my connection speed was slow where I was and I thought I'd just finish downloading the other episode tomorrow. when I get back I now need to upgrade to iTunes 7.7, but in order to do that I need to upgrade my OS to Leopard. so a $4 purchase would turn into a $130 purchase! I mean, I PAYED for the episode and I can't even access it! plus I'm going to college now and I don't have enough funds to purchase a new OS. is there some way I can download my purchased item, or do I really need to upgrade my entire OS just to get it?

I now need to upgrade to iTunes 7.7, but in order to do that I need to upgrade my OS to Leopard.
No you don't. You just need Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later. Leopard is not required, just upgrade your OS to the lastest version of 10.4.

While you can redownload most past purchases without charge, you can't redownload movies without paying again.  See Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • I have a 2005 PowerBook G4 with tiger 10.4, Do I have to upgrade to Leopard first and then Snow Leopard and can I do that on such an old operating system.

I have an old system Tiger 10.4 on a 2005 Power Book G4 and wonder if I can upgrade to Leopard or can skip to Snow Leopard.

A 2005 PowerBook has enough horsepower ro run OS 10.5 Leopard If you have enought RAM. However, no pre-Intel Mac can use any higher Mac OS. 10.6 and higher MUST have an Intel processor, a feature not incorporated in Mac notebooks until 2006.

  • MB Pro, with Tiger, which has since upgraded to Leopard - Install Discs?

My MacBook Pro had originally been installed with Tiger. I have since upgraded to Leopard.
Should I need to boot from my install discs, which install disc do I use? Will my Tiger install discs work with Leopard, or should I use my Leopard disc (retail version)?
    Thank you!

    {quote:title=Kappy wrote:}
Actually you would be better to install Leopard directly. You can reinstall pre-bundled software separately without installing Tiger. An Erase and Install of Leopard would be preferable to installing Tiger then upgrading to Leopard. Less chance of a problem.
    Hi Kappy,
Some, at least, of the late 2007 MBP C2D 2.2 and 2.4 GHz MBPs (mine included) actually came with Tiger Installed, but with a "drop in" copy of Leopard enclosed in the box. From memory the version of Leopard included will only install if the original software is in place. (I'm not 100% certain of this, but I'll check) Not sure what Trisha's situation is, of course, but worth bearing in mind as a possible issue.
    Cheers

  • Aperture request serial number after upgrading to Leopard.

I have just upgrade to Leopard. Everything goes right except for the fact Aperture no longer open. It is requesting for my serial number. Never had to do this before. I am working with Aperture for at least a year now and made all my updates without having to re-enter the serial number. This happens only a few week after I throw out the empty box of Aperture not being aware I was keeping it probably because of that serial number! What can I do now.

Welcome to the forum. As you've registered the software with Apple you might be able to ring them up and get your serial number.
    Ian
P.S. NEVER throw away those little slips with the serial number on! Your computer could crash and the backup not work, Migration Assistant might fail to copy the serial number across to a newly-bought computer, you might want to sell the software etc. There are many circumstances that might require you to fill in the serial number again...

  • Upgrading to Leopard / ITunes 7.6 and Iphone detection

If you are having trouble with your Iphone being detected with the 7.6 Itunes and you have just upgraded to Leopard then I have the solution for you.
    Link: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n306637

    sirfig,
In most cases removing the enter kernel extension shouldn't be necessary.
Just remove iTunes from /Applications/ and the receipts from /Library/Receipts/
    Download and install iTunes 7.6.
    Hope this helps,

  • WARNING!: Upgrading to Quicktime 7.7 breaks "Purchased" tab in iTunes 10.4 Store

iTunes 10.4 comes with Apple Application Support 1.5.2.  As long as you have that version of Apple Application Support, the purchased tab in the iTunes Store will work.
Both Safari 5.1 and Quicktime 7.7 come with a newer version of Apple Application Support, 2.0.1.  If you install either update (or both), then the purchased tab in the iTunes store will be blank.
The Quicktime 7.7 is especially annoying since that's a security update.  So basically you can either have access to purchased items in iTunes 10.4, but run an insecure version of QuickTime or have a secure version of Quicktime, but lose access to purchased items in the iTunes store on your PC.
Come on Apple, can't you at test your software on Windows before updating it?   This plus the annoying sync crash when optimizing videos (photos) shows Apple doesn't test anything.  iTunes 10.4 for Windows really *****.

I have a work around, but it's not for the faint of heart.  It basically involves copying the *.dll files out of the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" folder when version 1.5.2 is installed and then upgrading to version 2.0.1 (Quicktime 7.7 or Safari 5.1).
As such I don't recommend you do this unless you know what you are doing, otherwise you will likely have to completely uninstall and reinstall iTunes (or worse).  If you mess things up, don't come to me for help.  You've been warned.
I tested this on Windows XP, but it should work under Vista and 7.
Whenever you want to access your past purchases do the following:
    1. Make iTunes, QuickTime and Safari are not running.  Basically no Apple programs.
    2. Backup all the *.dll files In the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support" folder and put them in a safe place.  I zipped them up.
    3. Now delete all the *.dll files.  I simply made a "tmp" folder inside the Apple Application Support folder and moved them there.
    4. Take the *.dll files you save from version 1.5.2 and copy them into the folder.
Now you can run iTunes and access the store and download your past purchases.  Leaving things like this is bad for a number of reasons, so when you are done simply quit iTunes and then remove the 1.5.2 version dll and put the 2.0.1 dll versions back.
Technically you don't need to replace all the *.dll, only about 10 of them, but it's just easier to replace all of them.  Also note that there is one .dll file that is exclusive to 1.5.2 and 5 that are exclusive to 2.0.1.

  • My purchased items have not been have not been available in iTunes since 12/24/2012?

On 12/24/2012 up until 10pm CST, I watched TV shows on Apple TV from items that I purchased that are on the cloud.  This morning 12/25/2012, I have not been able to access my purchased items on Apple TV or on iTunes on my MacBook Air.  Is there something going on with the iCloud server where these shows are stored?  If so, when will it be repaired?

    Best Regards,

You need to upgrade your copy of MS Office. You're using a version that is 8 years old (at least). You can buy Office 2011, which will work. You could also get a copy of Pages from the App Store, which is cheaper and will open Word files (though not perfectly). Or you could get a free Office clone, like OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

  • I've read similar questions and answers, but I am still terrified to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard. The only reason I want to is because I received an iPad which requires an updated system. I have an external hard drive. I have the disks to upgrade

I've read similar questions and have studied the answers, but I am still terrified to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard on my macbook pro. The only reason for doing it is in order to sync my macbook pro with my iPad. I do have an external drive which automatically backs up every hour. BUT.......I am techno-ignorant as well as techno-paranoid. I have the disks to update to snow leopard but knowing doing so may likely change/alter/lose/obliterate my current set-up, it actually makes me feel sick to think of it.
Years ago when updating via Apple Protection Plan tech support, my screen actually went blank, everything gone! The tech told me not to worry, that "we" would be able to restore things, but several hours later I was still looking at a primitive looking screen that wasn't anything like what I had before. His language was too technical, in that there was an assumption I understood things I had zero understanding of. Example: partition my external drive.
Anyway, living hundreds of miles from an Apple service provider, and no Apple techs in my community, I had to wait for a trip to an Apple Store where one of the wonderful guys at the genius bar spent a ton of time getting things back to normal and actually explaining it enough that I had a vague understanding.
So now I am in the predicament again and won't know what to do after installing the new disks and finding a likely mess or absence of documents etc. on my computer. I don't know how to access the external drive, and even if I did I wouldn't know how to move stuff from that to my computer.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

I'm in the same boat as you, I've used Mac's since day one and neglected my Windows education and now it has come to haunt me as I have to learn it like a school kid.
Nearly 99% of all businesses and nearly 95% of everyone use Windows, Steve Jobs declared "The desktop wars are over, Microsoft won" a long time ago.
By 2015 tablets are going to be selling to consumers more than traditional computers, your living proof, you got a iPad.
Apple has already discontinued the Xserver, the Xraid, the MacBooks and the 17" Macbook Pro.
Apple has introduced BootCamp in OS X 10.6 and up, this allows a partition and drivers so one can install Windows on a Mac.
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Why do you think they named it "BootCamp"
You can't run a older OS X version longterm like you have with 10.5 anymore, Mac's are being targeted for attacks and older OS X versions are dropped for security updates.
In fact your Mac might still be part of the 750,000 Mac strong Flashback botnet or infected.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_BackDoor.Flashback
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/04/how-to-check-forand-get-rid-ofa-mac-flashba ck-infection/
See here, Apple has no security updates for 10.5 users and soon 10.6 is going to be ignored next.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1222
1-1.5 years is the OS X upgrade cycle. Change everytime like it or not.
So I'm thinking about your long term future and how you obviously don't like change, need local assistance like it appears you first claimed.
So buy a new Mac and upgrade your OS X version whenever Apple shows it in AppStore.
When your machine can no longer upgrade to the newest OS X version, then you've got about another 2 more years of security updates before you have to buy a new machine or risk running a insecure one.
Learn here how to go about fixing your own machine and creating backups/bootable clones this way your not having to drive several hundred miles for a software or boot drive repair. Simply reverse clone your troubles away.

I'm of the maturity and experience that I know a Mac isn't always the best solution for everyone and even Apple doesn't provide the proper hardware, support or features for everyone. Why only store locations in high traffic ritzy areas?
Our SteveJobs fan here is under 18 years old with good eyes, he's not older like we are with bad or failing eyesight.
The new Mac's  have hard to see glossy screens and the type/UI can't be scaled up easily to accomadate our older eyes, however a Windows 7 machine does allow up to 150% scale of the UI, type etc., and also there are anti-glare screen PC's and just about no more anti-glare screen Mac's.
I wrote this User tip in case you have trouble seeing the screen, at least you can scale the web browsing up
Web browsing for hard of seeing users
Apple might still be selling the anti-glare 15" non-retina on their online store, it's the "high resolution/anti-glare model"
But I can get a 17" 1080i HD anti-glare Windows 7 laptop at Sager for a lot more performance and screen size for the price than a Mac.
    https://www.sagernotebook.com/index.php?page=category_browse&selected_cat=2
Screen size is important as the UI and text can be scaled up for easier reading.
Of course you do now have the option of having Windows pre-installed alongside OS X to begin your transition to the dark side.
Just call and they will accomondate, hold the option/alt key at boot time to swtich operating systems.
    http://www.macmall.com/
Windows 7 looks just as good as OS X, the secret is having a good monitor with most PC's come with don't.
Good Luck and I hope I've given you a lot to think about.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard.  Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

  • I have recently upgraded my iBookG4 from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and find my Bluetooth USB adaptor no longer connects. The Bluetooth pane says inactive. Does Leopard require  USB 2.0. I've had the adaptor for some time so may be USB 1.0

I have recently upgraded my iBookG4 from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.8 and find my Bluetooth USB adaptor no longer connects. The Bluetooth pane says inactive. Does Leopard require  USB 2.0. I've had the adaptor for some time so may be USB 1.0

Bluetooth icon on menu bar shows bluetooth off. When opening bluetooth preferences it shows the devices I've connected previously,( my mobile phone), and other devices I've attempted to connect but not very successfully: my iPhone and MiniMac.  The bluetooth dongle in the USB port shows a continual blue light but does not react and the iBook does not recognise that it is there. There is absolutely no reaction when I try to pair my mobile phone, which I've done successfully before upgrading to Leopard, either by the iBook or the mobile phone.
I assumed that Tiger was not bluetooth compatible with the iPhone or MacMini running SnowLeopard and hoped by upgrading to Leopard I could achieve some file transfers between the three devices (iBook, iPhone and MacMini)

  • I have 10.5.8 and want to install the new itunes 10.7, in order to sync the new nano , but i am unable to.  Do I have to upgrade to snow leopard in order to sync new nano?

I have an imac (2009) with OS X 10.5.8 and i need to install the new itunes (10.7) in order to sync my new nano (7th generation).  Do I have to upgrade my software to Snow Leopard in order to run itunes 10.7?  How to I go about this?

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
Whilst Apple have withdrawn Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:
