Do I have to use iCloud with new Photos app?

I see that Apple has eliminated iPhoto and is going to require me to update to the new Photos app. When I read what Apple has to say about the update/change I am worried that I have to put my photos on the iCloud...  I read quotes like "If you shoot a snapshot, slo-mo, or selfie on your iPhone, it’s automatically added to iCloud Photo Library as well" and "iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos in the cloud" directly from the Apple website. I absolutely do NOT want my photos on the iCloud. I currently take photos on my phone and upload them onto my Mac when I want to, and I want to continue to do this. So I'm trying hard NOT to update my software until I understand better what the new Photos app will require of me. Any help is appreciated.
Update is OS X 10.10.3, Photos app

I see that Apple has eliminated iPhoto and is going to require me to update to the new Photos app.
For the time being is iPhoto still working very well with the latest release of MacOS X 10.10.3.  You can try out the new Photos for Mac app, while you are still keeping your main Photos library in iPhoto.
With MacOS X 10.10.3 you need iPhoto 9.6.1.  Apple does not sell iPhoto any longer, so you can neither update it nor purchase it. But you can reinstall, if you already own  iPhoto and it is associated with your Apple ID.
See this user Tip:
Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities
The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.
You may need to unhide your Purchases, if you do not see iPhoto on the Purchases page when you sign into the AppStore with your AppleID:

Don't the albums show at all?
Are you signed in  with the same Apple ID that you used with iCloud before?  And are you currently browsing the System Photos Library? Only one Photos library, enabled as the System Photos library can sync with iCloud.
For me it helped to disable iCloud Photo sharing in the System Preferences > iCloud > Photos > Options
and in the Photos. app Preferences < iCloud.
Then restart the Mac and enable the same Preferences again.
    And wait.
The Shared albums came slowly back and were all back after one day.

  • Can't open existing library with new photos app on iMac 10.10.3

I have upgraded my iMac to yosemite 10.10.3, with the new Photos app. I have been using iPhoto Library Manager to create and manage my libraries, which I store on an external hard drive.
Now, with the upgrade and new Photos app, some libraries open and I can access my photos without a problem, but other libraries don't seem to open. Instead, I get the new Photos windows with the demo slideshow, etc.  I'm worried that the photos within the libraries I'm unable to open are now gone.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice?

    How is the EHD formatted?
If the external hard drive is not formatted OS X Extended (journaled) Photos will not be able to open them.  Actually iPhoto requires the volume to be formatted that way also but doesn't check the format before opening.  Many users have been able to operated on EHDs that were not formatted properly for a while but eventually ended up with a damage/corrupted library.

  • With new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did in the past with iPhoto.

With the new Photos app, I can no longer drag and drop photos into other applications as I did with iPhoto.  For instance, I have a photo collage app that in the past, I could just drag in the photos I wanted to include.  Now, I can DRAG the photos, but they do not DROP.  So, I have to go through the export process.  It is tedious.  What am I missing?  Where can I turn on the drag and drop feature for Photos?

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there

  • Laundry List of Problems with New Photos App...

This isn't really a question, per se, but a list of complaints that others might have input on workarounds.
    1. I made a habit of downloading my photos to the computer after each activity that merited it.  As such, the images were naturally sorted into Events that neatly matched.  As far as I can tell, my images are all in one giant jumble of crap now.  Did I miss a step in the transition where it asked me if I wanted to keep my Events as Albums in the new app or is this just something I'm going to have to do manually?  (I guess I did have a question...)
    2. I try to avoid deleting my photos from my SD cards until I have them backed up in at least two locations.  As such, I end up relying on the app's ability to recognize the previously imported from the new.  This afternoon, I put the SD card in and it did just that, however the import buttons were disabled and even selecting the new images didn't re-enable them.  I had something else to do, so I properly ejected the SD card and came back later.  Now when I put the SD card in, it ONLY sees the old photos and doesn't even recognize the new ones as old ones.  They are completely invisible to the app.  And it won't let me import from an SD card with the Import function, simply "graying out" the folders on the card so they can not be selected.  I had to drag-copy the files into an empty folder on my desktop and then import from that location.  This is precisely n-1 steps too many.
It really seems like this application could have used several more weeks of bug testing before being released.  I'm not prepared to say that it is definitively worse than iPhoto (which wasn't exactly phenomenal), but it really seems like a weak excuse to cram the iCloud down your throat.  That might be the corporate goal, since they keep putting tiny HDs in the MacBooks, despite the rapidly improving SSD technology and declining prices.

In Photos your Events were converted to Albums. Easiest access is if you enable the sidebar (View Menu)
I've seen a couple pf reports of oddities with importing from cards. Nothing to help you there I'm afraid.

Is there a way to show currently selected photo in finder?

And explain to them the feature you need.
Of course, exporting will do the same more safely.

  • Will Aperture support new Photo app's library?

New Photo app (comes with OS X 10.10.3 beta) has changed iPhoto library name and structure, since Aperture uses the same photo library as iPhoto uses, does that mean Aperture will no longer work when OS X 10.10.3 is officially released to public?
Will existing Aperture's filters be compatible with new Photo app's editing function?

You can open the versions with the filename extensions "migratedphotolibrary", e,g, iPhoto Library iPhoto.migratedphotolibrary.
While you are experimenting, make sure the filename extensions will show for all your photo libraries, so you know which version you are dealing with.
If you try to browse the main "Photos.library" in Aperture or iPhoto, those applications will simply open the last library they could open, and if you have deleted this library, Aperture or iPhoto will come up empty.

Mac OS X 10.7 requires an Intel i3, i5, i7, Core 2 Duo and 2 GB ram...to download you need to call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and pay $20 for a download code for the Mac App Store.

  • I have been using Icloud but want to stop. I connected to itunes but it wants me to set up as a new phone.

I have been using icloud to back up my Iphone 5, but it hasn't backed up in a while because the backup is too big.  I want to start syncing to itunes instead but when I connect to itunes it wants me to use a backup that is over a year old or set up as a new phone.  If I set up as a new phone will I lose everything that is on my phone now?

    Hi denmardel,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You should be able to back up your iPhone to iTunes using these steps, without syncing or setting it up as new:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
To back up the content on your iOS device, follow these steps:
Make sure your computer has the latest version of iTunes.
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Choose File > Devices > Back up.
To verify that the backup finished successfully, open iTunes Preferences and select the Devices tab. You'll see the name of the device along with the date and time iTunes created the backup.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

  • If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space, I mean I have to delete mu hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using to with new information?

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

  • Got a new lap top my husband wanted to help me by downloading itunes on it I have not used icloud but do have it on my phone When he pugged it in it asked if he wanted to backup he said yes Then reset my phone now all my pictures are gone please help

I got a new lap top and my husband thought it would be a good idea to help me by downloading itunes on it. Well Not so much...   I have not used icloud but do have it on my phone and other items. When he pugged my phone in to my laptop it asked if he wanted to backup he said yes. Then it reset my phone and now all my pictures are gone please help

If your phone was backed up to your computer, the backup would contain your camera roll photos (and videos).  Restoring to this backup would recover them.  However, if it was backed up a second time after losing them, this would overwrite the backup containing the data and your photos would be lost.
You can try restoring to your backup, but before doing so go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  This will prevent the phone from automatically syncing and backing up when you connect it to your computer, thereby overwriting the backup you want to restore to.  After doing this, open iTunes on your computer and connect your phone, then right-click on the name of your phone on the left side of iTunes and choose Restore from Backup.  (If you have iTunes 11 first go to View>Show Sidebar.)
Again this might work, as long as the phone was only backed up and then not subsequently backed up again after the photos were lost.

Forwarding email from comcast to icloud is different than icloud managing comcast email.  One disadvantage of forwarding is that when you respond to an email originally sent to the comcast address and forwarded to icloud, your reply will have the icloud address as the source, not your comcast.  That is a problem for many users.
If your comcast account is IMAP, then there's no reason to forward.  Just define two accounts in your mail app, one for comcast and one for icloud.  Once done, you don't have to worry about dealing with two services, it's all done in a unified way.
And.... you are not talking to Apple here, we're just users like you.  Apple doesn't participate in these forums.
