Do I HAVE to use iWeb???

I'm a pretty fair hand at coding my own websites and I want to create one for my web.mac.com site, but do I have to use iWeb?? I'd much rather use an actual web design program (ie: GoLive) and then FTP the finished product. Is that possible or am I stuck with iWeb?

You wouldn't need to FTP.
Just place it in the "Sites" folder of your iDisk.
The address would be
homepage.mac.com/yourusername/nameoffolder/pagename.html

For iWeb, I like to do only one site per domain file. I move domain files out of the Application Support folder and place them inside project or client folders, or in DropBox. Once you duplicate a domain file and begin customizing it, it will load and behave as a separate project/site.
I publish each iWeb domain/project direct to a server via FTP. Sometime I publish to a folder, then upload via FTP manually.
iWeb is a remarkable tool, especially when you work from scratch with blank tamplates

Hi when i have been using iWeb for the whole week and all of a sudden i wanted to open iWeb but nothing came up? the tab at the top says that iWeb is open but i have no image i can't edit or do anything to my web site i just see my background. please help

Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
Click to view full size
launch iWeb and try again.
If that doesn't help continue with:
move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
launch iWeb and try again.
If Roddy's suggestions fail to help continue with this:
1 - open iPhoto and select a couple of photos.
2 - use the Share ➙ iWeb ➙ Photo page menu option.
Give it a couple of tries if the first one doesn't help.

I want to add my own hyperlinks/menu bar using different colors and shapes like I have seen on other pages but can't find instructions on how do accomplish this in the program.

I have developed a website using iWeb and it includes a blog page selected from stock pages in iWeb. I'm publishing it with GoDaddy and when I do that the interactive functions of the blog page don't work. (Adding comments and photos as well as searching). Is there any simple way to host this site somewhere so that those functions work?

No, because all those functions were MobileMe only and now that MobileMe has gone, they won't function any longer.
To enable these to function, you either need to add them yourself or change your blogging platform to something else such as WordPress etc., and create a link from iWeb to your WordPress blog or embed the blog page using iframe into your iWeb site.
Commenting systems such as Disqus or http://www.intensedebate.com work quite well.

I have been using DREAMWEAVER MX for almost ten years to keep a website up-to-date. Can I switch to iWeb now to do the job, and if so, how do I go about it?

With MacOS 10.7 looming on the horizon, using veteran software DREAMWEAVER MX any longer does not seem to be such a good idea. I would like to use an editor that can cope with the new MacOS. Is iWeb that editor?
Specifically, I need some clarity on these issues:
Can I switch to iWeb now to create and publish content in my old website for which I have been using DREAMWEAVER MX?
Can I use the html layout I have been using in DREAMWEAVER, or do I have to steel myself for drastic changes?
How do I import the complete website into iWeb – if at all?

If you switch to iWeb you will have to build the site from scratch since iWeb can't read or import html files. Also since the future of iWeb is a little uncertain as to if it will be continued to be supported by Apple it might not be the best move at this time.
You might look into upgrading to Dreamweaver for Mac.

iCloud does not provide website hosting. You will need to find another website hosting service - there are many to choose from - and upload your site there. How you do this depends on what version of iWeb you have.
In order to upload your existing site in iWeb '09 and above:
Click on the name of the site in the sidebar: the publishing settings pane will open. Set 'Publish to' to 'FTP'. Enter the name of the site and a contact address (if desired).
In the 'FTP Server Settings' section you will need to know the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. Your site will be published in a folder with its name at root level of the server, with an index.html file at root level (which will overwrite any index.html file which may be there already). The 'Directory/Path' field may need to include a path such as '/webspace/' or 'ht_docs/' - this is dependent on your hosting service and they should tell you this. If you want to publish within a folder you can add that to the path.
You can then click the 'Test connection' button so that iWeb can check that it can get access to your server space. You should enter the URL of the site in the 'URL' field so that rss feeds and internal links have the correct address.
To publish using an earlier version of iWeb:
From the File menu choose 'Publish to a folder'. You should create a folder somewhere convenient specifically for this and choose it when publishing to a folder: this folder should not contain anything else.
You now need an FTP program (FTP is the 'protocol' used for uploading) to upload the contents of the folder to your server.Cyberduck is free (donation requested): Transmit is $34 but I think better. You will need the server address (your hosting service can tell you that), and your username and password for that service. You can drag the contents of your folder to your webspace, or create a folder there and drag the contents to that if you prefer.
Some facilities that iWeb provided when hosted on MobileMe will not work on other servers: comments on weblogs and photos, password-protecting your site (some hosts may provide this), searching in the weblog, and a hits counter (again, some hosts can provide code for this). Slideshows in iWeb will work on other hosts than MobileMe (they use different code when FTPing which doesn't depend on scripts hosted on MobileMe as the MobileMe version does); however there is an issue with the 'buttons' which control the slideshow which are images hosted on me.com - these depend on images which used to be hosted on MobileMe. Firstly iWeb CAN'T IMPORT any kind of published html code as it has no import facility. You can however add html code, javascript and css by selecting the html snippet and placing it on your page the entering the code in here and clicking on Apply. You DO NOT create a shape as you say - you use the html snippet and place your code in there.
There are not really a lot of ways in which you can write code - if you want to enter small amounts of code, then you would use an ordinary text editor to do this such as Text Edit on a Mac or Text Wrangler. If you want to add code to iWeb like this, then you would either use the html snippet method in iWeb itself or you would have to publish the site to a local folder from iWeb and open the relevant html page with a text editor and add the additional code in this way and then publish. However, if he decided to add the code with a text editor, then you would have to upload the pages directly to the server using an ftp client - if you try to upload the site directly from iWeb, all the extra code will be overwritten.
As for checking whether the site was created using iWeb, all you need do is view the site in Safari and then click on View and then select View Source Code and it will tell you.
Even thoough extra code was added to the site and he might well have done this by publishing to a local folder and adding the code with a text editor, he should still have the domain file for the site too.
Ask again. I'm sure that for adding quick code, most would not want to use programmes such as Dreamweaver, but a simple text editor will suffice. As OT already said, if he claims that he does not have the domain.sites file, then try Flux 4 which is a web design programme and has full import facilities. At least this way, if he just gives you the published version of the site, you have some way of opening it.
You can download a free trial of Flux 4 and you can also purchase the full version from the Mac App Store if you decide you like it.

I have recently upgraded our Choir's website, using iWeb, (it was previously done using other software. I get the home page on the screen, but when I click on links, I get this error message; "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /var/www/vir

Now, when I go to the site, (comc.ca), the first page comes up fine, but when I click on the links to other pages, I get this message.....

I went to an Apple store, (I still have time left on my one-to-one period), but didn't get an answer.

What is your definition of "more efficiently"? If it's limitation of search results, branded search, and limitation of styling your results then google search is more efficient. Real developers rely on their own developments. For example: how can google search display results from a password-protected site? They can't.
