Do i lose files when upgrading to Lion?

I am preparing to upgrade to Lion fromsnowleapard, i don't have a back up, but my question is:
Do I lose files when upgrading to Lion? I have microsoft office for MAC 2011 installed and files for garageband which I realy don't want to loose!

If you have files you don't want to lose, you should back up your system regardless of upgrading or not.  Buy an external drive and clone your system or use Time Machine to back it up.
The normal Lion upgrade won't delete your data if things go correctly, any hiccups and you'll need that backup.

Will I lose any files when I perform Lion Recovery? I have been having some problems with my 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch lately and am considering using Lion Recovery to solve them.. Will I lose any of my files when installing a fresh copy of Lion with Lion Recovery??
    HELP ME PLEASEEEE!!!!
    Thanks

You need to get some way of backing up your files if you care about them. Otherwise you're at risk of data loss, particularly since youre having problems now which could escalate at any time. Running any computer, regardless of operating system, without making backup of important files is taking a rather foolish risk. There are all sorts of ways to make backups; there are even free online storage services such as Dropbox which offer a couple of gigabytes of free space in their servers to which you can back up, if you have no other method.

  • Is there a way of deleting old files when upgrading to Lion

So I'm finally thinking about switching over from 10.6.8 to 10.7.5.  Normally, when I upgrade to a newer OS, it's usually when a newer OS than that comes out.  ie. Mountain Lion is out, so Lion would have seen it's issues and has been updated as much as it can.  Basically, 10.7.5 is the best Lion will ever get.  Hence why I'm willing to upgrade.  I'll admit, I'm lazy when it comes to having to reinstall everything, but because old OS extensions and kernels don't get deleted when you upgrade to newer OS, I usually install a clean OS, which means I have to reinstall all my apps.  I'm wondering if there's a way for all older OS system files that are not necessary anymore, to be deleted upon upgrading.  Or will Apple ever design an upgrade that will do so.

Buy Lion, erase your disk and install.

  • When upgrading to Lion from SL, is it possible to grow the partition?

The partition in which Snow Leopard resides needs to be larger.  Is it possible when upgrading to Lion to make it bigger?  Is there another way to grow the Snow Leopard partition w/o migrating to Lion?

You have 4-5 internal drive bays.
Extra drive sleds are also sold so you can swap out drives (powered down of course, no hot swap).
Lion creates a recovery partition - and if you install Lion to its own drive it will be fine, then Setup Assistant will run on first restart and import your files.
There are a few more things to look out for on Mac Pro generally, software, drivers, and hardware.
As for using 20%,  200GB, what some people do is move all the non OS/Apps items to a 2nd media/data/user account hard drive.
Limiting the OS to the outer 25% insures reduced seeks and that it uses the outer faster tracks.
If you use RAID, that is another concern.
Software RAID on Lion, Broken Functionality
SuperDuper will optimize your folders and such, but it won't copy a recovery partition.

  • When upgrading to Lion, will the documents, photos etc get wiped off..?

When upgrading to Lion, will the documents, photos etc get wiped off..?

All it does is update the OS.
Which in no way implies that you don't need a backup prior to upgrading. While extremely unlikely, anything can happen in the process.

  • Do I need to backup my files when upgrading from tiger to leopard?

Not sure if I need to backup all my files before upgrading from Tiger to Leopard (to use a Mac Box Set), have bought a Seagate 1TB FreeAgent GoFlex Home hard drive to back up on. Was told I wouldn't need a WiFi router but have now discovered I would need a dual Ethernet port to be connected to the internet and the hard drive which my Mac mini only has access for one, either the internet or the hard drive. So I ask do I really need to back up before upgrading? or can you get dual Ethernet ports?

Only if your data has any value to you.
If everything works perfectly, you should lose nothing.
If anything goes wrong, it is possible to lose data.
Personally I don't want to trust my data to everything working perfectly so I back it up.
As to the question of dual ethernet ports, you don't need them actually. If you create a LAN with a router then the multiple ports on your router will allow you to connect to both the internet and disk at once.

  • Problem import to iPhoto when upgraded to Lion!

    Hello!
I've upgraded to Lion and now there is a problem when I try to import new photos to iPhoto!
When I drag a photo to the library it seems to go to the library but when I restart iPhoto it is gone...
I've pressed alt when I started so I got the option to create a new library and in the new labrary I created there was no problem...
I can of course reimport all my photos but I have done so much work so that I don't like to do :-)
I have tried to reinstall iPhoto also!
    Please can someone help...
PS. The photo that I try to import i found in the master and thumbnail folder but is not shown in iPhoto when I restart as I mentioned above so there seems to be some linking problem...
    Jan

Oh I found a solution in the forum that solved my problem... I write how I did so maybe someone else could be helped :-)
If you hold down alt (option) and cmd key you get the option to rebuild your library... I choosed both the first and the last option (1 and 6) and now it works....
    Fantastic!

  • IPhoto video problems when upgraded to Lion

    Hi,
I just recently upgraded my MacBook Air (10.7.3) to Lion and I now have trouble with some of the movies that were in my iPhoto library, they can no longer be opened and I get the error message of "A necessary data referrence could not be resolved." The file info indicates that it is a movie mpg file, but it just won't open or play.
Does anyone know what I need to do to "recover" the mpg files so they can play in iPhoto?
    Cheers,
    Skip

    Thanks Terence,
Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. It should be the file where the jgp files are but not the movie. In iPhoto, the file info show it as a video with a size of 10.2 MB, but it will not play.  I can not find this file anywhere other than as a jpg. It is almost as if when I upgraded, the mpg files were converted to jpg but still referrencing in iPhoto as mpg. Any other suggestions?
    Cheers,

  • I had to trash pref files when upgrading to Logic 9

Started with Logic 7 three years ago...
So yesterday I upgraded to Logic 9 from 8, and I had two unusual problems.
First, when I would record a track, the waveform overview wouldn't draw. It would make the blue box, with a line down the middle, and I had audio, but no visible waveform. If I manually prompted Logic to redraw it, it would...
But then on subsequent tracks they wouldn't have a waveform either. Now it's pretty common for Logic to ignore rendering these while you're actually recording something. It's focused on getting your audio on the drive... but as soon as you stop, it will immediately display your waveform and that wasn't happening.
I also was getting a "disk too slow message". I was recording to an internal drive and I have recorded multiple tracks simultaneously with Logic 8, so a single voice track shouldn't have made a difference.
Repairing permissions seems to have stopped the "disk too slow message", and as far as the waveform overview, I trashed the pref files. (Logic will make new ones when you relaunch it) That seems to have fixed the issue.
I went through something similar when they came out with 8. I actually had to delete the old program and do a complete re-install.
Having gone through that, which isn't much... Logic 9 looks really good. Some great new features...
Here's a question: How can we get Apple to give us a .pdf manual? Is there someplace we can put in the request?
Based on what I've seen, that's the biggest disappointment everyone has!

  • Aperture cannot locate master files when upgrading to new OS X Leopard

I have recently upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. The problem I have encountered is that when trying to locate the master files of my pictures, Aperture cannot because it thinks my files are in my hard drive located in my previous OS X and that the volume is not mounted. I cannot 'Relocate Masters for Projects' or bring my masters back online since it is the hard drive I am currently running Leopard. Does anyone else have this problem and possibly a resolution? Thank you very much.

I had a similar problem, and this how I fixed this.
Select all the files, and either select "Manage Referenced Files" from the File menu or from the contextual menu when you right click the selected files. Use the dialogue that appears to navigate to your master files [make sure that "Show only Files Not Found" is NOT selected] and reconnect your files. If you have files in a number of albums/projects/folders this may take some time.
Quit Aperture, and if a dialogue shows up saying that it is updating previews DON'T SELECT CANCEL. When you re-launch Aperture everything should be fine.

  • HDMI sound stopped working when upgrading to Lion

I have a mini connected to my TV via HDMI (video and audio). It has worked nicely until a few days ago when I upgraded to OS X Lion, then the audio disappeared. If I open System Preferences -> Sound -> Output I can see two possible outputs, the earphones and my TV. If I try to select the TV as output it is immediatly changed back to earphones.
It all worked fine in leopard, does anyone have a clue why it has stopped working in Lion?
    BR
    Johan

I have found a workaround. I seems like if I unplugg the headphone jack, which is normally connected to my stereo, I can select HDMI as sound output in system preferences. It really makes no sense, I hope they fix this in the next release.
