Do I need a cat 5e or a cat 6 cable?

Hi everyone
The cable that connects my infinity router to the home hub says cat 5e on it and as I require a slightly longer cable should I replace it with another cat 5e cable or would I be better replacing it with a cat 6 cable?
Does one offer any advantage over the other at all?

Why bother with the more expensive cat6 to (hopefully) increase LAN speed when the broadband speed is nowhere near!
Cat6 is only really needed in an office environment where you have a significant amount of internal LAN traffic.
First the difference in price between CAT5e and CAT 6 is negligible.
Second CAT5e is more than good enough for what we have now.
Third get CAT6 now while it's relatively cheap for the future.

  • Usb or cat 5e cable time machine restore

Would it be better to perform my time machine restore of about 200 gb with a usb or cat 5e cable in terms of speed and safety?
I'm doing this to get rid of software that I installed and is causing problems system-wide. I will lose the data accumulated since the back up that precedes the problem software.
To perform the restore, I simply do it from the install disk and restore from Time Machine back up, correct?
    Consider the following:
    back up A - pre-problematic software ~200 Gb
back up B - problematic software with accumulated data
back up A' - pre-problematic software now restored to system
back up C - pre-problematic software and future backups
Will back up B remain intact when I go ahead with back up C after restoring the older system so that I can access that data or should I back it up to another disk?
Will back up C be a full 200Gb back up or will it simply be incremental to A'?
Are there any other factors I need to consider?

USB will be faster than Ethernet, perhaps near twice as fast.

Why don't you just delete the software?

I have no idea what all these backups are. Please clarify.
You can restore your entire boot volume using the Install disk (see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum). That will first erase the previous contents.
You can restore other volumes (ie, data volumes without OSX), or data from your boot volume, via the normal TM "Star Wars" display. If there are duplications, you'll see a prompt allowing you to choose whether to Keep the Original, Keep Both, or Replace.

Ther does seem to be  quite a lot of comments about this issue
It seems the charger is a little slow and takes upto 4 hours to charge
closing all apps and leave the  ipod in standby seems to off the best charging experience
    I hope the Photo helps
In my view apple should have included a better charger for the price, the new 12w adaptor will reduce the charge time and resolve you problem, however its about $15

While 10.2 might help, there's not much you can do on the Internet these days with less than 10.4.11

  • What cat 5e cable should one buy?

    Some good info here
    http://www.howtogeek.com/70494/what-kind-of-ethernet-cat-5e6a-cable-should-i-use/
    mainly depends on your requirements...
If you are buying a lot then maybe go for cat6a which will help in the long run if going 1gb..

I came across a post asking whether people buy cheap network cables or premium cables and it was an interesting question which raised another question.
One thing that I picked up was to make sure that the cables were not CCA (Copper Cladded Aluminium) which apparently is bad.
However, the post did not really cover what what should be looking for in a patch lead.
Should it be AWG26 or AWG24.  Should one use booted or non booted or strain relief for cabinets and connecting computers to network port.  What other considerations should one take into account?
    Any thoughts?

Yes, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network using the exact same wireless network name and password as the Linksys wireless network.

  • Does the airport express need to be connected to router with ethernet cable to work?

We are trying to set up 2 zones for streaming music. The guys at Apple sold me an airport express. However I cannot get it to connect to the internet unless it's wired directly to my wifi router. This does not work for me as the components I need to plug into it are located in another room of the house. Am I doing something wrong or am I trying to get the AX do something it can't?

The Express cannot wireless extend non apple router.. however it can join a wireless network that is non-apple and it can work as a wireless to ethernet bridge. It should be able to connect the audio output to amp or speakers. But you need to do the setup, choosing join a wireless network which is under the options and not displayed as a standard connection type in the utility.
Here is one example of doing it.

    Thanks

The update failed.  It needs to be plugged into a computer with iTunes via a standard USB cable so iTunes can reload its firmware.

  • Help with Cat 5 cables

Hello, I'm new here and need some help. I am trying to set up a small network at my office using  cat5 wire I purchased, along with line tester. I had to throw approximately 120 ft of cable to the furthest computers, but the router doesn't recognize it, although the line tester saya everything is working fine. The computers state that a network cable is unplugged and won't let me proceed with set up. Any ideas on what is happening? Thanks in advance.

Did you make the cable a straight, or cross over? You need a cross over cable for this.

  • Cat 5 vs cat 6 cables

I need to order some new cables to connect a new quad core xeon and an older dual core xeon to a gig switch. I am considering spending some extra money on getting cat6 cables, just wondering if is worth spending the extra money for the cat6 cables (in terms of performance/reliability), or if I am wasting money on the cat6 cables...
    Thanks

The wire itself is usually a smaller fraction of the total cost of installation, and it's also what you're going to be "stuck with" and using for at least a few years. You're stuck with what you pull, at least until you pull something new, or until whatever finally supersedes 802.11n comes on-line.
I'd wire in expectation of 10 GbE right now; that's Cat6, Cat5e (350 MHz) or Cat6a wiring. The sites I'd wired for 100 MbE and Cat5e (350 MHz) are now all running GbE over that same cable, too.
It's often effective to pull more wire than you might immediately need. Look to pull a 25-pair Cat6+ cable in some runs, or fiber, or both, as you will then have spares should testing find cable fault(s), and you also have room to expand. While you have the walls open, consider dragging an RG6 or fiber, too.
Beware: there are at least two different "Cat5e" versions floating around in the wiring industry; there's a 100 MHz version and a 350 MHz version that's rated above some of the Cat6 versions floating around.
Again, the wire is the cheap(er) part of the effort.

  • Ethernet Bridge and cat 5 cable to extend range?

I am in a building with wi-fi on the upper level, but I'm in the basement.
I have no means of extending the network "down" to me, but I'm trying to figure out a way for me to extend my range "up".
Does anybody know if a Wireless Ethernet Bridge (like the Belkin 802.11g Wireless Ethernet Bridge F5D7330) and a 50 foot ethernet cable could be used to pick up the wi-fi.
I'm thinking that I could possibly run the ethernet cable up the side of the building and place the wireless ethernet bridge on the roof, but I currently have no experience with a wireless bridge.
    Thanks,
    Luke

If you are running an Ethernet cable why not connect the Ethernet cable directly to the internet on the upper level instead of trying to detect the wireless signal?
Make sure that you use Ethernet cable which is rated for outdoor use and/or you place the cable in the proper conduit (pipe) to withstand the weather and meet any building codes.
