Do i need a dac for late macbook 2013 retina? or will sound be good from headphone jack?

i have ordered some desktop speakers and want the best sound quality, i need to hook it up to my mac
ive heard 3.5mm aux isnt the best... i would prefer usb, but then i would need to invest in a dac. would any cheap dac do if the soundcard in the mac is good? or is this not the case
mainly listening to music.. just want good quality
not doing any music production to a professional level...
thanks

For listening to music the headphone jack is more than adequate.

  • Need advice on RAM i need for MacBook Pro Retina? Will 4GB Be Enough?

    Hi Everyone,
Basically I am currently saving up for my MacBook Pro Retina(13") and I need some advice about RAM. I am a 14 year old student who is starting there GCSE's in September and I have no idea how much RAM i will need; I will be using my new MacBook on video editing(not intensive just in iMovie), GarageBand(occasional), Safari and iLife and I am a little worried that 4GB of RAM is not going to be enough to handle this. I know that I cannot upgrade the RAM after i have purchased the Mac but I don't really want to pay over £200/$300 just for extra storage and RAM when i don't really need it, what do you all think? any ideas?☺️

Because memory is not upgradeable, you should get as much as you can afford. 4 GBs is a minimal requirements. I would suggest at least 8 GBs. The same goes of SSD storage space. Get more if you can. At least 256 GBs if you can afford it. Remember it is not what you will do tomorrow, but a couple of years from now that really matters.

  • Do i need security/antivirus for mac macbook pro 15/ 2013

do i need security/antivirus for my macbook pro 15 2013

do i need security/antivirus for my macbook pro 15 2013
If you are using OS X you already have it.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up",  "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

For voltage wise - you don't.
But you need a converter for the socket.

If QuickTime Player 7 isn't in the Utilities folder automatically, you can install it separately. See:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3678
Instructions on how to register your QuickTime Pro key can be found in that same document.

  • Is there a display for my MacBook Pro retina that isn't made by apple and doesn't cost the world?

Please tell if there is a display for my MacBook Pro retina that I don't have to pay tons for and will connect to my laptop!

I just plugged my 13" MBPr in to a cheap 24" 1080p BenQ using a Display port to DVI adapter and it works fine, crisp enough for my eyes and for around £115 a bargain.
edit: Picked it up from Amazon on a free next day delivery with Prime.

What is the fastest OP system for a Macbook Pro Retina 2.6? I'm new to Mac so please excuse the weird question.

Ok but that is a feature that I think is available to older Mac's that have an SSD so it is not totally restricted to Retina models or even the newest models of Mac's.
With that you could say No Mac is what you paid for without ML installed. Which I disagree with.

Well, I am. Power Nap is just one of the features you don't get on a Retina unless you do run Mountain Lion.

No. If you want Apple to do the work, then you must also get parts from them. You can do the work yourself; you can look for certified Apple tech to do the work for you; you can take it to a non-Apple affiliated shop. Note that doing it yourself or taking it to a non-Apple shop will void your warranty and prevent Apple from performing any future service on the computer.

  • Has Apple pulled the SMC update for the Macbook Pro Retina from the App Store

Does anyone know if Apple pulled the SMC update for the Macbook Pro Retina? I can no longer see it as an update in the app store. I am refering to the update that enables power nap on the Macbook Pro Retina.

It showed up in my ML App Store.
    What is your SMC version?
    Mine is
    SMC Version (system):          2.3f28
and I don't have the update installed.

  • No Sound From Headphone Jack, Only Internal Speakers working in Macbook Pro A1278

Hello, the internal speakers of Macbook Pro A1278 OSX 10.7.5 are working perfectly, but no sound from headphones or external speakers when plugged in. Headphones/speakers recognized when plugged in, shown by System Preferences/Sound, and since the sound stops from internal speakers when headphones/speakers are plugged in. No red light seen coming from headphone jack, as I read in other posts. The problem began after a cable was connected between computer and stereo system. Maybe overloaded the sound card and burned out a connection? Wondering if you think that the sound card needs to be replaced or is there another solution possible? Thank you.

    Hello JohnBoarkman,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you hear no sound from your accessory when you connect to your headphone jack. My first troubleshooting suggestion for this situation would be resetting the NVRAM on your Mac. Please use the instructions in the attached article to complete this process and let me know if the issue continues.
