Do I need a dedicated graphics card for my laptop if I mainly use Photoshop CS6 to paint?

I'm looking to buy a laptop and having a dedicated graphics card is obviously more expensive, but is it necessary for painting on Photoshop CS6 without lagging? I use a lot of layers, adjustments, masks, and large brushes, but that's mostly it, also I don't spam the undo button.

LOL, those are very compute-intensive operations.  That's basically saying "I need the most powerful computer I can find" to run Photoshop.
It's hard to generalize an answer to your specific question, because not all GPUs or systems are created equal.  If I had to generalize, I'd say you should try to avoid DUAL GPU systems, in which an Intel and some other brand are combined to try to deliver power saving and high performance capabilities.  Photoshop traditionally doesn't really like that kind of arrangement, and forum members often advise folks with dual GPU systems who are experiencing problems to just disable one of them (usually the lesser one) anyway.
Keep in mind that a laptop isn't going to be able to achieve as good performance as a desktop for a resource hungry application like Photoshop, yet will be more expensive.  You really will want a high-end machine (possibly even mobile workstation class) to paint in the manner you describe.
I invite others who use modern laptops to chime in here and relate their actual experiences, as well as provide information on their specific configurations.

  • Help me choose a good Graphic Card for my Laptop

Hello guys, first let me say I'm glad I've found this forum, It's been some time that I wanted to decide and buy a new graphic card for my laptop, but I guess this is the time and I'll start by asking for some help from you.
My laptop is HP Pavilion g6, the specs are the following (using CPU-z)
    CPU: http://prntscr.com/5fqo9f
    Caches: http://prntscr.com/5fqohx
    Mainboard: http://prntscr.com/5fqomk
    RAM: http://prntscr.com/5fqos4
    SPD: http://prntscr.com/5fqoxh
    Graphics: http://prntscr.com/5fqp1b
I wanted to ask you what kind of graphic card would suit my laptop, and which one do you recommend me buy?
I would to play all the latest games... I believe I need another 4GB of RAM memory, and I believe my CPU is good enough, what do you say guys?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
What is the model/product of your laptop ? Generally speaking: we can't upgrade video card for nearly all laptops.

  • Adding dedicated graphic card to my laptop

I have I5 core E5-571P-59QA laptop, and I have intel HD 4000 family integrated graphic cards. Is it possible to add dedicated graphic card to my laptop? Intel HD 4000 is decent enough but I want to play more graphically intense games .

to my knowledge the answer would be "no" to an upgrade to graphics as the laptop is not designed for that, it uses integrated Intel HD-4400 graphics which are decent for basic gaming.

Where can I buy a motherboard and/ or graphics card for Qosmio F10?
    Thanks, all.

Price, address and phone number please. Oh and an email address if there is one. I was hoping that E-bay might have a motherboard that I need, but I don't see any. I'm shopping around at the mo seeing where I could buy one.

  • Can I get a better graphic card for my laptop?

Hi, my name is Mitchell and about a few years ago i got an Hp Pavilion G6 Notebook pc.  I use my laptops mostly for school work but now ive started to play games on it and ive noticed that I can play some games because the graphic card is not the best.  Instead of makeing a new gaming pc I wanted to just upgrade the graphic card on it?  Am I able to buy a graphic card for it and instal it?

    Hi,
What is your G6 ? G6 is a series of many models/laptops and normally we can't upgrade video card on 99.5% of them. Not just G6 series, other laptops from HP and other vendors as well. We can only upgrade video card on some REAL games and work station class machines.
    Regards.

  • Now I need a new Graphics card for CS4

    Hi -
So I took the plunge and upgraded to CS4 - then discovered to my annoyance that Matrox aren't bothering ('corporate decision') to write drivers for their AVPE card to support WYSIWYG with CS4. Great, so a £200 card is now on the ebay pile and my 10 year (expensive) relationship with Matrox is over.
Now I'm faced with a problem, I've always had Matrox graphics cards in all my edit machines, the WYSIWYG plugins make things easy and they do work well- or did.
Please can anyone advise me if there's a card out there which will give me the ability to run two monitors as a desktop, and have a feature monitor showing my edit.(all VGA connected) With Production Premium CS4 I'd like 1GB of memory as I'm planning on editing some footage from a RED camera (or trying to) - with the Nvidia or ATI cards - is there software that allows you to set up which monotor does what - and does this plug in to Premiere After Effects Photoshop etc?
I have 2 PCIE slots, and don't mind I suppose having two graphics cards in the machine, will this work, if I insert a for example Nvidia GTX 260 alongside the AVPE will that work, letting the Matrox handle the desktop and the Nvidia the Feature monitor, or would I be better having two GTX 260's ??
I have asked the boffins at PNY if they think this'll work and they say - maybe, though the card will only support certain codecs.....really? they're getting back to me on what those might be.
    My system is
    Supermicro X7DWA N 16 gb ram
    XP pro SP2
    PSU 600watt
monitors are Benq - analogue all VGA
Adobe Production Premium CS4 with Cineform 4K
This is an area that is quite hard to research - none of the manufacturers websites answer the questions that come up and so I have to keep calling up tech support in various different countries, then wait while they go and find out.
I'm hopeful that someone out there has an answer - thanks for reading - any help appreciated

    Hello Harm
Thanks for the reply, I was hoping you would, and also hoping that wouldn't be your reply.
I don't want to tie up my camera and have it on full time, just to get less quality than I was getting on the computer monitor as a feature monitor I was getting last week. The quality is really good, and I find it much easier to see for drawing masks etc and for colouring and grading - I guess die to having loads more pixels.
I can't accept that there isn't another solution and so I'm looking for one, even if I have to buy two GTX260's, I'd rather spend the £175 twice (or the extra £175) than have the camera in and out of it's box every time I want to edit and then the cables everywhere, I went tapeless to get away from that and sold a couple of cameras that I could have used.
I'd like to find out if having one nvidia 260 and my lovely obsolete matrox card will work, or if two 260s will give me the result I need, and so in the absence of any person who can tell me, I'll just have to give it a try, annoyingly, my mobo isn't SLI capabole, so I'll be wasting some of the potential of doing this, but may get the system to work again.
Can't express here how annoyed I am with Matrox, if they produced a card tomorrow which could shoot edit and composite award winning material which would keep clients happy from now to eternity for $1 - I wouldn't buy it.
I'll post the results as I go along.
My alternative is to go and buy a 6 foot monitor to use as a desktop.
Can't believe I'm the only person to have fallen foul of Matrox's failure to provide service.

  • Need a Replacement Graphics Card for Light Gaming

My current 7800GT overheats when gaming or even just running GLXgears. I need a replacement of similar or slightly better performance (preferably less than $100) for an nforce4 SLI board. How are the ATI drivers right now? I've heard they still have issues. I'm kind of wary of Nvidia due to the possibly wide spread defects. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Nvidia … ,6248.html
It seems sort of lose-lose. Which graphics card would you recommend?
Edit: Do either of these seem reasonable? Which is better? The 2600XT?

You might be able to fix your current nvidia.
Maybe try removing and re-attaching the heatsink/fan setup and cleaning ou the fan. You'll probably need some thermal paste to re-attach the heatsink, but it doesnt cost much. Keep in mind that graphics cards can run really hot, some have max temps over 150C iirc..
I wouldnt worry about that nvidia thing, it's probably not an issue now.

  • Need recommendations: New graphics card for HPE-400y

Hi!  I'm in need of a new graphics card, but I don't know which one is best for my computer.  My computer is a Hewlett Packard  HPE-400y.   Click here for specs!
My computers has all the original parts except the PSU and HDD. I recently changed the PSU to a Corsair CX430.  The current hard drive is a WD Caviar Black 2TB.
I use my computer for Guild Wars 2, Maya (models and animation), Zbrush, Corel Painter, and Photoshop.
My current graphics card (Radeon HD 5450) has issues playing Guild Wars 2. The FPS is 30 or lower if I try to play the game with medium or high settings. The FPS also drops when I'm playing the group PVP event known as World Vs World. I often have to have the graphics on the lowest setting in order to get 30 -45 FPS.
You can find the Guild Wars 2 requirements here: GW2 official wiki -- requirements info
Click here for Maya 2015 requirements
Click here for Corel Painter requirements (When you get to the page, click on system requirements)
Any and all help is appreciated!  Thank you in advance for your advice and help!

    Hi,
You should be able to get a double wide card in your PC.  Length may be a problem due to all of the cables. If the space below the optical drive is open then you might try to stuffing the extra cable lengths into that location.
BTW-- very nice photos.  Not many will go through the effort to do so.
Consider trying one of the below graphics.
MSI NVIDIA GTX N750 TI and the MSI GTX N750 TF  Both of these graphics cards are significantly faster then your existing 5450.
Know what the return policy is before your buy.
You have an excellent Corsair power supply. I would prefer that you had a 500 watt PSU so that the higher performing graphics cards could be tried.  This NVIDIA GTX 660 specifies at 450 watt minimum but the 12v amperage from your Corsair CX430 is more than sufficient.  It might be worth giving it a go.  It's about 50% faster than the above two graphics cards.  I typically don't recommend that graphics cards be used with PSUs below the graphics card manufacturer's minimum requirements but the Corsair CX430 should work.

  • I need a new graphics card for my iMac Apple will not sell me one so I can repair it myself, help

my graphics card as gone on my iMac Apple will not sell me one so that I can repair it myself, any suggestions

not sure which iMac you have but since the old 24" model the video card is not a separate board but a part of the main board so to fix it you would have to buy a smd gpu chip and solder the smd legs manually few people can manage such  feat the only leg compatible gpu chips would work of cause in which case it would be more of a nvidia or amd having to sell you the gpu chip then apple as apple don't make gpu chips

  • Finally a graphics card for Apple Laptop's Nvidia 7950 mobile released.

    7950 = apparently dual ( 7800 gtx 256bit 256mb+ / g70/1 / 35gb/s / 800m )
Now Apple has no more excuses to delay building the first Apple Intel Laptop " NOT Apple ATI X1600 PDA ".
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/10/12/nvidiageforce_go7950/

Sorry to have fried your nerf's but I do love Apple and would gladly purchase another Apple if they give me something to buy and not provide weaker machines then 2 year old Dell Laptops.
I would have bought the Mac pro desktop until I found out it only has 2 x dual cores "4 cpu's" . LOL who would pay for that LOL
I wanted / expected and informed all my friends about it having 2x quad core xeon's ie: 8 cpu's until they called back and laughed at me
    Well my 2 year old Dell E1705 Zippo has a 7800 gtx 256bit 256mb ram running at 800m thingy's / 35gb/s at normal settings.
The 7800 gtx comes from a 9300 celeron m Dell laptop model that was prior to the 9400 celeron m that was prior to the e1705 core duo.
I payed $1500 way back when I purchased it and added 2gb 667 ddr2 + 7200rpm 100gb hd 2.5". Not $2500 for a $900 dell clone. "Ebay" I do not pay for half a broken cup of coffee, I want the real deal not some ripp-off.
Now if Apple expects me to buy again from them they will have to provide a Apple laptop that comply's with my orriginal reason for switching to Apple = Power / Performance / Design / Craftsmanship and extremely high prices in relation to the other junk out there for sale "NON Apple Stuff / alternatives"
So when they think of returning to APPLE and stay away from the Dell clones that they are trying to produce now $900.00 stuff "Mac Book Pro actual value , then I will gladly pay $2500 - $3000 for a laptop that will in any case be plugged in to AC 96% of the time ie: battery = backup power.
Surely they will then have to provide power / performance / design / craftsmanship and a non mobile phone graphics card ie: 7950 or at least the 8800 g80 that will be released in november 2006
    http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/10/02/nvidiag80_to_shipnovember/
SO why get so upset it is a good product for children and teachers "Mac Book Pro" but for the idiots like me and NASA and any other normal person over the age of 10 we need power and don't mind paying for it.
Or we would have bought the MacBook to play with.
Surely the 110v/220v light bulb that light the room you are in will not be satisfied with 2 AA 2x1.5v battery's to power it as it will not be able to do it's job ??????

  • Which New Graphic Card For 2008 Mac Pro?

I'm going to buy Final Cut X, so I'll need a new graphic card for my 2008 MacPro. My current card is an ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I asked AppleCare and they sent me a link to a lot of compatible cards (copied below).
But it turns out that most of these cards need Windows - at least according to specs - and the rest don't have the (2) DVI-D connections I need - so which card should I buy?
    The card has to work with my 2 Acer P243W 24" screens at 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
    Here's Apple's list:
    •    NVIDIA
    o    GeForce 320M
    o    GeForce GT 330M
    o    GeForce 9400M
    o    GeForce 9600M GT
o    GeForce 8600M GT  Note: OpenCL compatible, but does not meet system requirements for Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor.
    o    GeForce GT 120
    o    GeForce GT 130
    o    GeForce GTX 285
    o    GeForce 8800 GT
    o    GeForce 8800 GS
    o    Quadro FX 4800
    o    Quadro FX5600
    •    ATI
    o    Radeon HD 4670
    o    Radeon HD 4850
    o    Radeon HD 4870
    o    Radeon HD 5670
    o    Radeon HD 5750
    o    Radeon HD 5770

Once you look at what is sold, limits the list. None of those listed require Windows though. What specs? I don't see any specs. And of course nothing listed are Windows, that would be strange. Why you pasted notebook and iMac graphic adapters... unless Apple is selling FCPX for Windows.
Forget the GT120 though some use it with FCPX and are okay with it, save a little though I think 5770 has more processing, bandwidth and of course 1GB DDR5.
support for 6870 PC card is looking like a possible option now, too.
It is more mainly just 5770 vs 5870. Or Quadro 4000.
Amazon has PNY Mac Pro edition $790 vs Apple's $1195 for same card

I include the above for same reason why when the 4870 came out, PC card was 1/2 price and $450 for 5870? really? when XFX and Saffire are under $199.

  • Graphics Card for hp dv7 6135dx

Hi i just would really like to know if there is any way to upgrade my graphic card for my laptop?

    Hi:
Yes, you can upgrade the video card from your existing one, to any of those listed in chapter 3 of the service manual at the link below, starting on page 26.
In order to upgrade the video on your notebook however, the entire motherboard needs to be replaced.
The costs attendant to doing such an upgrade would exceed the cost of buying a new notebook with the graphics solution you want, after selling or trading yours in.

  • NEED HDCP-COMPLIANT ADD-ON GRAPHICS CARD FOR P6710F

I need referral to a compatible hdcp-compliant add-in graphics card for the p6710f desktop machine. This machine has a 250-watt power supply.

The first thing that you will need is a new power supply unit (PSU).  The newer mid-level dedicated video cards require at least 400W to operate properly.  I normally recommend at least 500W, but 600W is even better for possible future upgrades.  I like Corsair products.
Here is a video card that should do what you need.  The majority of video cards today are HDCP compatible.  I suggest that you call EVGA Tech Support to see if there is a VBIOS update for the card to assure that it will work with a Legacy BIOS before you buy it.  It requires at least a 400W PSU.

  • Need advice about second graphics card for PowerPC G5

My boss bought me a second monitor for our office computer, so we can use two monitors on one computer.  The problem is we need a second graphics card to handle the second monitor and I'm not sure what to buy.
The computer is a  Dual 2.7 GHz Power PC G5.
The second monitor that my boss gave me is a View Sonic HD Widescreen LCD with a DVI-D single link connector.
What should we buy to make all of this work together?  The company I work for is very cheap, so we need to do this rather inexpensively.

You don't need a second card (which would kill several advanced features on the main card anyway) but a card with two appropriate output connectors.
What card is in the machine at present?  Open System Profiler in /Applications/Utilities and click on the Graphics/Displays item under Hardware, viz. this screen grab:
The top bold-face line will have the information you need, plus if two monitors are supported (which I am betting is true) one of the displays entries will be "No Display Connected."  I am pretty sure that any card that came with the 2.7 originally has two video connectors, probably DVI.  According to the specs listed on the Power Macintosh specs pages, the 2.7 base card had a single-link and dual-link pair of DVI connectors.
