Do I need a headphone amp?

Hello,
I have decided to purchase a pair of Sennheiser HD 650s and am wondering whether or not I will need to also purchase a headphone amplifier to use with them.
I will be jacking in to my new MacBook Pro directly. Is the DAC in these laptops strong enough to push these puppies?
Thanks.

Not very loud. I generally do listen to music at extreme volumes except in a club or other party environment and even then I try to distance myself from the speakers. My volume controls usually hover around half-way. I am thinking I should just wait until I can try the phones out and see. I have an audio interface already (MOTU 828 MkII) but the headphone jack is broken at the moment due to the outer portion of my old headphone's TRS connector seperating inside of it and I have not figured out how to remove the thing. If I do get an amp I am probably going to go with the Headroom Total Bithead unit (http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-mobile-line/headroom-total- bithead.php).

  • Do I need a headphone amp or is MacBook pro amp good enough

Is the audio amp in the MacBook Pro 13 Retina (2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz8GB 1600MHz memory128GB PCIe-based flash storage) Powerful enough to get a good result with my Sennheiser HD 600 Headphones

Not sure I've got your exact model specs but in general.
According to this the output of the headphone driver is:s
    Sound Card Specs
"Maximum output voltage: 2 VRMS (+8.24 dBu)
    Output impedance: < 24 Ω"
Your Sennheisers have an impedance of 300 Ω which will be a terrible mismatch. You will not be happy. Volume will be quite low.

"For your application I think the Sennheiser HD 25-1 II would be the best bet as they are low impedance and *very* efficient (120dB).
If you want something like the HD 600 I would use a small USB headphone amp. like the CEntrance DACport - though there others at various prices"

  • Burn out headphone amp!

Is it possible to burn out a 4th gen iPod headphone amplifier with powerful headphones? I have professional DJ headphones and if I use them at full power with iPod, will they burn out the amp?

Yes, I'm aware of the stereo vs. mono designation at the bottom of the channel strips. All the channel strips (except the overheads) are mono, but when choosing an output I still only see the options of outputs in stereo format Ii.e. 1-2, 3-4, etc.
I'm sure this is something easy that I'm overlooking, but haven't figured it out yet. Do I need to send the original channel to an aux channel first before designating a mono output? Not sure why I'm not seeing mono outputs available from a mono channel strip.
    Thanks.

  • Headphone amp for use with i-mac

    Hi,
Im looking for a headphone amplifier for use with my i-mac and logic 9, im using a pair of sennheiser HD 650's, can anyone recommend one?
    Thanx...

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If you want to use the drive exclusively with your Mac then move the data off it and reformat it in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilities - Disk Utilities) as Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

  • Does GarageBand mean I don't need these "effects amps" anymore?

I am just learning electric guitar and want to save money. So, I don't need these things right? Just need maybe a pre-amp to plug into my Mac's audio jack, or maybe any other USB pre-amp?

Well... really you don't even need a preamp. Many people are getting superb sounds by simply using a standard 1/4 " phone jack out of the guitar and using a 'phone- to mini' plug on the other end (plugging that into the Mac's mini line in port). Garageband has some very good 'preamp' models built right in! I'm using an Apogee Duet as my interface/ line in but again.... you can simply do the phone to mini adapter thing and get great results! Have fun. ~King

  • Bleeding audio on tracks using headphone amp

I can hear other tracks in backgroung of newly recorded track. I am using headphones via Behringer amp to an alesis mutimixer USB.
When I remove the phone amp, the problem goes, but then I don't have mult-phone capability.
    Ideas?

Is your microphone recording the leakage from the headphones? Then,
    Turn down the headphones' volume
    and/or
    buy good closed headphones.
Is the leakage electrical? Get your cabling and/or headphone and/or amp repaired or replaced.

  • Z87-GD65 Headphone Amp question?

The OPA amp for the headphones. Is it for the rear out put only? Or does it work on the front output also?
    Thank You!
    Rebelord

Ok, I got it working per your instructions. Thanks for the info. Under the iaStorA and iaStorAV section in the registry, there is a sub-section under each called "Startup Parameters" and had a key of "zero" with a setting of "3". I changed those to "0" and rebooted, went into the BIOS, changed to Raid from ACHI, and I was able to Boot the OS on the SSD without problems. I rebooted again, went into the Raid BIOS, created the Raid 1 with the 2 drives and got into Windows. Went into the Intel Storage manager, initialized the Raid volume which took about 3 hours.
Thanks for the info. Everything worked great.

  • Advice Needed Bluetooth Headphones

Hi could anyone please advise me on the best way to listen to a movie, music etc. On my desktop Mac, which I have in my bedroom without disturbing my neighbors I used to be able to do this using a program called Air Phone, so I could listen through my iPhone earphones but that is no longer available so does anyone know if Bluetooth headphones could do the same job? And if so what would you recommend! I am also going to buy a Smart TV in the near future so if I could have a Bluetooth headphone that I could use for both that would be great. Thanks

The BT profile in the Touch does not support mics, only stereo headphones or speakers or peer to peer (with certain games and apps).
I use the Motorola Rokr S9. Works well.

  • I need a headphone adapter/extender

Here is my problem. I have a nice case for my Nano and the iPod earbuds plug in fine with the case on. I would like to use my Sony headphones instead but they have a "L" shaped plug, and can't plug all the way into the Nano with the case on. I saw a guy at the gym with an extender that plugged into the iPod (with a case on it) and then his headphones plugged into the extender. The extender was only a couple of inches long so it didn't add much in the way of bulk or loads of length to the headphones. Before I could ask him where he got it, he was gone. Has anyone seen this extender before? I would like to know where to get one. I have googled with no success. The earbuds won't stay in my ears so they have to go! Thanks.

  • Need Good Headphones For The Gym...Thoughts?

I have some cheap Nike Headphones for running, but these are the behind the head ones which will break if I'm doing any kind of weights where my head is back against a bench.
I have been using the headphones which came with the iPod, but they keep falling out. This is very annoying.
So...if anyone has had success with headphones (not behind the neck/head) which stay in your ears and are good for the gym, please let me know.
    Many thanks in advance!!

  • Advice zero-latency vox monitoring

    Hey all,
I want to set up my studio in such a way that a vocalist can monitor their feed directly, rather than via software monitoring, so that there is zero latency. I'm hoping someone can provide some advice for doing such.
Currently, I have a microphone going into an Avalon preamp, then into a Digi003 Rack. As far as I know, 003 doesn't employ a direct out for zero-latency monitoring, so I need a strategy, whether it be via clever audio routing in Logic or via hardware.
To slightly complicate matters, I (as the producer/engineer) would like to hear the mix (through the DAW), so I'd be monitoring from the 003, but the vocalist would have their own mix, with control of the balance between playback and voice. Again, either software or hardware solutions sought.
    Thank you.
    -droo

Don't know about zero latency monitoring of the 003.
    It says in the manual:
Aux In (to Monitor) Switch. This switch routes
the Aux In input pair directly to the Main Mon-
    itor and Headphone Outputs. ???
Otherwise you have to split the signal from the avalon and send the signals to your interface and to an headphone amp.
There are many splitters available. for example:
    http://www.thomann.de/gb/milleniumsp3splitter.htm
If your singer wants to control the balance between playback and voc you need a headphone amp like the
    http://www.behringer.com/HA8000/index.cfm?lang=ENG
    or the
    http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=99&brandID=2
You have to send the playback (without vocals) to the headphone amp. The amp has separate inputs for "more me" or direct-in-signals, which means the vocal signal. The singer can adjust the balance at the headphone amp and other things like volume and eq.
You can send the playback to a bus and from there to different outputs, so you can use separate outputs of your audio interface for playback with and without vocals. If your singer wants a totally different mix of the playback, you should use the sends within logic, to create a separate mix on another bus, which is routed to the headphone amp.
Hope that helps. Routing is one of the most tricky things in studio. Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions.

  • Headphones and amps

I just bought a set of wired headphones {removed per forum guidelines} for my PS3 a few days ago but I haven't gotten a headphone amplifier yet. On Amazon, there is a headphone amp that has volume control built  in and it's relatively cheap.{removed per forum guidelines}  Would this get me audio through my tv for my ps3 (and 360)? Also, I'm using my tv's av inputs to convert them into a headphone jack for my tv. If i change the setting on my ps3, I can still use HDMI for video, correct? I really don't know too much about audio so any help or advice is appreciated.

Basically, I just need the easiest and cheapest way to get audio to my headphones from my PS3. I realize I won't get the best audio by being cheap but cost is the deciding factor right  now.  A headphone amplifier seems like it would be the best option, since I don't have a receiver  for my tv and don't have the money to get one right now. I would like to get one in the future though. Can someone confirm for me that a headphone amp will get audio from my PS3 to headphones? I've had  some people say it will work with an amp and some people say I need a receiver. Also, if it does work, which cables would be easiest to use? Could I connect a female rca-female 3.5 mm adapter  to my PS3's av cables and plug my headphones into this?

  • Looking for a bluetooth headphone for my Macbook Air and Ipad Mini, I am not looking for a headphone that needs a transmitter to be connected to the source rather a headphone that can be connected directly via bluetooth to the source device

I am desperately looking for a bluetooth headphone that would be compatible to my Macbook air and Ipad mini both. I am more of looking for a headphone that does not need a transmitter device to be connected to the source (in this case Macbook Air and Ipad Mini) and headphone acting as a receiver, rather need a headphone that would be connected directly via bluetooth to the source, it would be great if multiple apple devices be connected simultaneously. Please suggest some good headphones.

Hey sorry for the late reply, I was busy to figure out alternatives as harman kardon was a difficult affair to find and acquire, but the good news is I managed to get hold of alternative.
Sony I assume recently launched a Bluetooth headphone DR-BTN200 which is compatible to my MacBook Air , iPad mini and android phone galaxy s2 with ease, the sound quality is pretty good as compared to other brands of Bluetooth headphones I checked compatible or incompatible to apple devices alike, this is definitely what I was looking for, costed me 7990 INR, this is highly recommended for ppl who are confused, I carried my devices to the store and checked before I bought a pair and pretty much happy,
The best part of this is its battery backup, I have used this hours for 3-5 days but this has not drain even then, but I do keep this charging once in 2-3 days just to keep this ready otherwise it does not even ask for it neither the quality of sound drops after 2-3 days of use.
This is over the ear headphone which is very soft but it's get sweaty around the ear I guess that's bound to happen.
Do get back to me for any other details, would be glad to share with all :)
