Do I need a Mac-specific Radeon 9600 for my G4 MDD?

I have a Power Mac dual 1ghz MDD with a Radeon 9000 graphics card. I can buy a cheap ($50) Radeon Geforce 9600 AGP 512 MB card, not specified as Mac-specific. Do I need a Mac-specific card? Or will any Geforce 9600 work in the MDD?
I am planning to use my MDD as a media center for my LCD TV; will the Radeon 9600 provide much better performance than my 9000 card (with 64MB)?
Anything else I should consider?
Thanks!

You may hear otherwise from wiser heads, but right now I would work on the basis that it has to be Mac-specific. All other reference to such cards I have seen has required Mac specific. However, some cards are non-Mac cards which have had their firmware flashed to be Mac specific. I don't know about that card but from many years ago I recall that sometimes there could still be compatibility issues with flashed cards. On the other hand I have also seen such cards suggested here as suitable so I may be out of date on this. Just so you don't rush out and buy the card before getting other feedback.

I need a Geforce 6200 Video card. The present card is 'flaky', causing ocaisional freezes on startup.  Does the replacement have to be mac specific, or will a PC version work?

A replacement card MUST be Mac specific unless you have the know how to hack the ROM to a Mac ROM (flash in a PC first).

  • Radeon 9600 for mac g5 driver problems

I have a g5 power pc with a radeon 9600 pro. When I hook it up via dvi/hdmi to my 1080 p projector, the projector recieves the correct resolution 1920/1080 but dvd's play choppy. If I change the resolution to 800.600 the dvd's play fine. Why???

Hi Glenn, the 9600 isn't fast enough...
    1920 * 1080 = 2073600
    800 * 600 = 480000
    2073600 / 480000 = 4.32
The higher resolution requires 4.32 times as much VRAM, & 4.32 times the speed Gpu to display the same thing on a larger screen.

  • Need answer about ATI/Radeon 9600 Screen glitch: lost in 2008 stale link!

Hi, I read this with relief that it describes exactly my problem (mouse trails after a clean re-install of Leopard, 30" Apple Cinema Display, PowerPC G5). Alas the website (blog) referenced that has the complete description of the fix is completely offline. Can someone help me dig up what to do?

    Thanks,

I don't want to boot and not be able to see the screen at all.
Yeah, and I'd hate to be part of that! But after moving the present one(s) out to a safe place and if you get no video, a Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), should by all rights load a "Safe Driver" for basic video.
Using mv is fine, don't need a specialized tool?
    Yes.
run the installers downloaded for 10.4.x and reboot?
Not sure if 10.4 ones work, perhaps earlier 10.5 ones, but you'll likely have to use Pacifist...

  • Radeon 9600 Pro MAC/PC resolution problem

I am trying to use this card with a 30" Apple display and can only get 1280 x 800 resolution which is horrible as you could imagine. I have also load the most recent ATI drivers. I am running a G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz on Mac OS 10.4.11. Thanks in advance.

I have been having the Exact Same Problem. I have two ViewSonic VA903b Monitors and an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro PC&Mac Edition installed in my G5 PPC. I used to have the standard Nvidia card installed, but replaced it because I wanted a dual monitor setup. It's worked fine with no issues at all since. I recently reinstalled Leopard (up to date) on my mac and now it won't recognize any screen resolution other than 1280x800 which is not what I'm after at all. I have tried downloading the drivers from here:
    http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/macosx10-4x-3x-radeon.aspx
This does install the ATI Control Panel, but most, if not all of the options are grayed out and unavailable. I must also note that I am using two DVI>VGA Connectors for my Monitors. This was not a problem before I reinstalled Leopard, so I know that it must be a drivers issue- I hope. When I reinstalled Leopard, the Main Screen was all gray and nearly illegible, but I was able to perform a fresh install of the OS. I am wondering if the mac needs to have the ViewSonic Monitor plugged directly into the Card, as it was originally before upgrading to the ATI card? If this is true, I do not have the old card anymore. Any ideas?

  • 30" display and the Radeon 9600 pro Mac/PC

Okay so I posted this on another "Display" forum before I realized I probably should have posted it here. Sorry. Anyway:
I just hooked up my new 30" display to my new Radeon 9600 Pro that supposedly has dual-link DVI ports for driving a monitor such as this. However the resolution is stuck at 1280x800. I've tried both ports on the card just in case only one of them was a dual-link (I'm unclear on whether it's one or both). However neither one produces the proper resolution.
The instructions seem to be directed at PC peeps and so doesn't make any sense to me. It's talking about uninstalling and reinstalling drivers for the card which I am not aware of a Mac needing but what do I know?
Can anybody tell me what I'm missing?

Well, I tried logging into the forum last night to tell folks to nevermind my query but the server wouldn't let me in. All is now well. This is what happened:
After entering my question I was poring further through the nominal manual and saw something about drivers for the card. Well, this was the first time I'd swapped out a video card plus nowhere in what I'd read in researching the matter ahead of time ever did I see any reference to drivers. Well lo and behold I went to the AMG site and found drivers to download. Unfortunately they were supposed to be installed BEFORE I put in the new card so I took out the new one, put back in the old one, installed the driver, reinstalled the new one and SHAZZAM! it worked and I am running with stunning clarity at 2048...or whatever it is.
A friendly respondent alerted me to a "2" that is stamped somewhere on the face of the card. But I fortunately picked the right one without knowing it. The manual really is not clear as to whether one or both ports are dual-link and it says nothing about how to determine which one is.

  • 30 in Cinema Radeon 9600 PC/Mac card blue screen

    Hi all,
I have PowerMac G5 dual 2ghz (the original one) 3gig of RAM. I just bought a 30 inch Cinema display and I also picked up the Radeon 9600 PC/Mac AGP card to up the resolution to max. I plugged the card in the AGP slot and then when I boot I get the gray screen with the apple logo and then it shifts to all blue with a cursor. The cursor will move but nothing else happens. Any idea what is up? I reinstalled the card 3 times. I put the old card back in and it works fine (just 1200x800). Not sure what else to try. Any help would be appreciated.
PowerMac G5 dual 2 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   30 in cinema display

Bu sure you plugged the 30" into the DVI connector with the small "2" stamped into the metal next to it. That is the dual-link port need for full resolution. Even if you used the wrong connector, though, it should have worked, but at half resolution, so the card may be bad. Do you have any other monitor (even a VGA monitor) to try with the card? (There should have been a DVI to VGA adapter with the card.)

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition will not work with leopard

When I installed a new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition, 256MB; my Dual 2 GHz G5 (June 2004) will not allow me to drive my Apple Cinema Display while running under leopard, (neither 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 with Leopard Graphics Update).
The mac starts up as usual and gets to the white screen with Apple logo -then the progress ring eventually stalls. The mouse pointer becomes visible and can be moved freely around this screen.
I can connect from other macs on the network and navigate files, but screen sharing results in an all black window.
The Radeon 9600 works fine if I start up the mac with the Tiger installation disk.
I have tried every suggestion that I could find on these boards and elsewhere: zapped the pram, reset the SMU, installed older ATI Drivers, etc...
Of course the G5 is far out of warranty. I've been running Leopard since the day it shipped - so that's out of warranty now, and there is little help to be found on the ATI/AMD website. I'm afraid I'll have to return the card before Apple releases another graphics update.
The stock graphics card that came with this mac is the nVIDIA 64MB GeForce FX 5200 - but it's having trouble keeping up with Leopard's demands - my isight barely works, most special effects in iChat and PhotoBooth are unusable, and of course I'm not given the option to use a transparent menu bar,
I am really good at swapping video cards in the G5 now - but I'm so frustrated.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
    thanks

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Card

    Hello,
I just got my Radeon 9600 Pro Mac & PC Card in the mail today.
I bummed to find that it did not come with a DVI to ADC adapter.
I have a apple 17" display that I would like to hook my new card up to.
I shopped around on the apple site's shop and found two products
    that may cure my situation.
One was a simple adapter cable for $29.99
The other was a bigger converter product for $99.99
    Which way should I go?

    Mitch,
If your monitor is one of the clear plastic generation types then the power comes through the ADC cable from your Mac. DVI connectors do not provide power, therefore the simple adapter cable probably won't work for you.
You will have to go with the converter for $99.99.

  • Does the PowerColor Radeon 9600 work in a Mac aswell?

    Hello,
i'm searching a new agp graphics card for my powermac G4 "Gigabit Ethernet".
I came across the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro which according to the manufacturer ATI works in both Apples and Win PCs (http://snipurl.com/17k11). Unfortunately, i cannot find that card for sale in german online stores. Some sell the PowerColor 9600 Pro (http://snipurl.com/17k0z), and i wonder if it is possible to run this card in a Mac, too....
    Any suggestions?
And if not - does anyone know a PCI or AGP card with at least 64 MB RAM for that i might use to replace the built in ATI rage 128 Pro of my G4?
    thanks in advance,
    Tobias
PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi,
Most any Mac ATI Radeon video card over 32MB VRAM will mirror and have Quartz Extreme, Nvidia 2MX and GF3 also. But I'd stick with ATI brand, they work nice in older Mac's.
The other reason that a ATI 9600 won't work in your Sawtooth is because it's a 4X/8X AGP card, your Sawtooth is 2X AGP - it won't fit.
Because you have a Sawtooth you must find a video card that is DVI/VGA, the Sawtooth does not support Apple's ADC video connection. Look around, ATI 7000/7200/7500/8500 can be found with the DVI/VGA connectors, with 32MB/64MB VRAM.
Core Image is a newer technology and available in newer video cards only. The Mac 9800 is the only one that has it. Certain 'flashed' PC video cards also have it, Nvidia 5200's, for example.
Make sure you get a 2X/4X AGP video card and make sure it has two video out connectors.
Or, just but a cheap PCI video card, like an ATI 7000 PCI, it in one of your PCI slots, connect the other monitor on it. Two monitors, two video cards.
    Regards,
    Dave

  • ATI Radeon X800 XT or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition for 30" display

I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro installed in my G5 2.0 DP and it is running my 30" display, but I am having some isssues when I play DVD's the pictures seems to skip every few seconds like it isn't playing fast enough, or it hesitates. I bought the ATI Radeon X800 XT and wanted to know if that would be a better card before I switch it out.

The X800 is a faster card but DVD playback doesn't put much load on the card, so the X800 probably won't help. If it skipping on more than one DVD, the DVD drive is probably having problems. Cleaning the lens ay help.

  • 1360 X 768 Resolution with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro

Maybe this isn't the right forum, but I've been surfing for hours with no luck so please forgive me if this seems out of place.
I output a show recently to QuickTime at 720 24 fps. I'd like to watch it on my 40" Samsung 720 HD TV. I cabled up and managed to get a picture in nearly fullscreen and nearly appropriate aspect ratio, but it doesn't look all that hot. Samsung tells me I want to set my Display settings on my Mac to 1360 x768 to achieve optimum picture. I told them I don't have that option in my settings. They said I probably need to update my driver on my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro video card. I did, still no 1360x768 setting. They said I might want to install the ATI Displays utility. That doesn't seem to offer anything useful. ATI's online support says I might want to install ATI's latest ROM updater, but I can't find any such thing even though the web seems full of mentions of such a beast.
Anyone have any ideas or any suggestion as to where I should post this question?

  • Help : Will ATI Radeon 9600 Pro run a 30" Cinema Display ? ? ?

just a simple question as the subject suggests /
    i have a 1st generate Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHZ / with Radeon 9600 Pro
graphics card . i would simply like to know if it will plug an play nicely
with a 30 inch monitor - be it the Apple Cinema Display or Dell -
anyone have any definitive answers / my thanks in advance
    best,
    lex

You need a different graphics board with dual-link DVI to run the 30" at full resolution. The AGP cards Apple sold that have dual-link DVI ports are:
ATI Radeon 9650 XT (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (two dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL (two dual-link DVI)
Apple doesn't sell these as retail items, but might sell them as replacement parts, or you could look for them used. Be sure to get Mac versions.
There are two new graphics boards that will work:
ATI Radeon® X800 XT MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one ADC, one dual-link DVI)
    <http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=3170810>
ATI Radeon® 9600 Pro PC & MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
