Do I need a Macbook Pro?

Hey everyone
Im looking to buy myself a new laptop and im considering a MacBook Pro 2011 13" or MacBook Pro 2010 13"
Im a student, and i want a laptop that is light so i can carry it to uni and around my house ect
Ive always been firm believer that you get what you pay for and i always strive to pay that extra bit of money for the better product on the market
Anyway, my uses for a laptop are:
using Facebook,
Youtube,
Netflix
Downloading US TV
Playing music
Using Microsoft Word
Torrents
Running mulitple web pages like news sites and uni stuff
playing game (which ill get to in a sec)
I feel like buying a Mac, i wouldnt get much use out of all the crazy features and ill be paying for things i wont use, but to be honest, i would like something new in a mac. I already have an iphone 3g so i know Apple are good and its a perfect phone for me.
so do i really need a Mac? could anyone recommend an alternative or should i make to the jump from PC to Mac and empty the remains of my student loan into a Macbook?
Also, im thinking about buying it preowned from Amazon Direct, a 2010 version? what do you think?
Im lost...but i need a new laptop
so yeh... 4 questions
Macbook Pro?
2010 or 2011?
New or Preowned?
Will this game run on a Macbook Pro? - Tropico 4(google it)
thanks guys, appreciate your time!

Refurbished Macs  are as good as new, meet the same standards, but for some reason, they cannot be sold as new. Some may be store returns, but they are completely undamaged, cosmetically perfect, and have the same warranty and are eligible for AppleCare up to 3 years.
The differences:
• if it is D.O.A., you have to ship it back -- they will not exchange it locally for new stock.
• You get only the options on the particular one you select, no substitutions, and they will not customize it.
•  it comes in a plain white box.

  • Do I really need a Macbook Pro over a Macbook Air?

I'll be using a notebook, well...as a notebook.  But I'll also be using it in a desktop setup with an external monitor at home (which has become largely how I use notebooks these days).  I have an ancient white Macbook currently, which essentially cannot stream videos of any quality.  My question is if I really need a Macbook Pro (I would wait for the new Retina update due in the next couple of months) or would the currently generation of Macbook Air suffice?  I would definitely need something capable of streaming HD videos online (think Netflix, etc.)  Thanks fellas.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Air works for that job without any problem. The Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU is not the best you can find, but it can stream HD videos. Also, note that the 13-inch MacBook Pro has got an older GPU which is similar. You don't need a 15-inch MacBook Pro to stream HD videos

  • What replacement Airport Extreme Card do I need for Macbook Pro 8.2?

It looks like my Airport Extreme Card has failed, although the Blue Tooth  is fine. I'm assuming that I need to buy a replacement but am struggling to find what I need. I have a Macbook Pro 15" early 2011 i7 2.2ghz so just need to know what cards are compatable.
It's been a slow failiure, over a couple of months but now it is not even recognised in the System profiler. I am happy to open the case and install a new card, I just need t know what will work. Is there a better card than the original out there, or even an upgrade? I've upgraded the Ram and had to change the HHD already, so as a machine it's starting to resemble the Philosopher's Axe...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Ralph,
    Thanks for the speedy response!
I"ve had the case open when I changed the HHD and Ram, and can seen where the card slots in. It's held by a supporting arm which lifts up when disconected from the Logic Board. it's weird looking inside, as you can see there are many of the same componants I've seen in other laptops. It is a tidier build though. I'm confident that if I detach the 3 antener conectors and remove the retainer screws a new card will fit back in.
The Genius Bars here in London are highly over subscribed, and I don't think I have the time or budget for that.
I'll keep plugging away, and see what happens. I'm almost getting used to being tethered to the Ethernet cable. I've only tripped over it 20 times a day!
    Take it easy.

  • What connector do I need for Macbook Pro to In Focus Projector? I understand it does not have HDMI input.

What connector do I need to use for MacBook Pro to an In Focus Projector to show a PowerPoint presentation?
I understand the projector has a "regular video input", S Video Input, but no HDMI input.
    Thanks

  • What adaptor do I need for MacBook Pro A1226?

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro model number A1226 - from late 2007 I think. It's a 15". I need a power adaptor for it as I got it second-hand and it didn't come with an adaptor. Can anyone help me out with what adaptor I need, and ideally including the adaptor model number?
    Thanks heaps
    Anna

    Hi!
    It's this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA348LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDEwMQ&mco=MTA4NDE2NDk
in the U.S. online Apple store. If you go to the online store for your country, you should be able to back into the proper model using the description of this one. What they call it should be the same. Just make sure the "15-inch" box is selected.

  • Need advice on RAM i need for MacBook Pro Retina? Will 4GB Be Enough?

    Hi Everyone,
Basically I am currently saving up for my MacBook Pro Retina(13") and I need some advice about RAM. I am a 14 year old student who is starting there GCSE's in September and I have no idea how much RAM i will need; I will be using my new MacBook on video editing(not intensive just in iMovie), GarageBand(occasional), Safari and iLife and I am a little worried that 4GB of RAM is not going to be enough to handle this. I know that I cannot upgrade the RAM after i have purchased the Mac but I don't really want to pay over £200/$300 just for extra storage and RAM when i don't really need it, what do you all think? any ideas?☺️

Because memory is not upgradeable, you should get as much as you can afford. 4 GBs is a minimal requirements. I would suggest at least 8 GBs. The same goes of SSD storage space. Get more if you can. At least 256 GBs if you can afford it. Remember it is not what you will do tomorrow, but a couple of years from now that really matters.

I NEED UPGRADE AND I already know that I should start buying snow leopard from apple , but after that how far can I go with these specifications??? I mean can I run maverick?
    Thanks.

    Yes.
You also can install up to 6 GB RAM which would be helpful running Mavericks.  The RAM specifications for you MBP are 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The most reliable sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
As you know, Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is required for ant OSX upgrade.
    Ciao.

  • What is macdefender and is it needed for macbook pro

What is Macdefender?  This software tried to download on my computer by itself and during that process said I had viruses on my computer including a trojan.  Is it necessary to have a virus software on my Macbook pro?  Should I be concerned that several viruses were noted and if so, what should I do?  Thanks.

    Judy
Your son is correct sooner or later someone will write a virus for Mac. Let's hope it's later! There is perhaps forms of malware that can get to a Mac, but from what more knowledgable than me said it's not likely if one is careful where their surfing, and the malware would have to be clicked on or downloaded. As I said you can download and intstall ClamXav it's free to use and has been around for a long time. If that's give you peace of mind then by all means do so. Actually I run it. You said you were looking at stock photos? Is that a website? I apologize I'm not familiar with. I know flickr. As for browsers I use Chrome as well, but a knowledgeable member of the forums said it is has security issues according the the site ThreatPost. suggesting Firefox was a better choice. However FF 4 has a huge memory leak affecting the Mac version. But I'm comfortable running Chrome. I'm running the developer verision of Chrome. Hope this helps. Thanks for the info.

  • I Need A MacBook Pro 13" Miracle!

The 13" MBP has a combo audio In/Out receptacle. ONLY ONE RECEPTACLE! I'm trying to use my electric guitar with Garage band but would like to me able to monitor what I'm playing thru my sound system. I'm using the "Line-In" with my guitar so I can't use it for my sound system... UNLESS... someone knows some miraculous way to work around that. PLEASE.. SOMEONE TELL ME YOU KNOW HOW TO PULL THIS OFF! Thanks.

I have a 4 channel Bewhringer interface... so I'm good to go going in. It's the coming back for my sound system that I can't overcome! Should have kept my 17" MBP. Live and learn. Thanks for your help... much appreciated.

  • Will Macbook Air be sufficient to run Photoshop through Creative Cloud or do I need Macbook Pro?  Thank you!

    Hi there...
I plan on buying a Macbook.  I really want the Macbook Air but people at Apple tell me I need the Macbook Pro to run Ps properly.  I plan on renting Ps monthly through Adobe Creative Cloud so Im not sure if this is the same and needs the same space as buying it and installing.
Any advice is appreciated!  Thanks so much!
    L.

The top end MacBook Pro 15" (17" high res/anti-glare for full 1080 HD screen)  for mobile video needs with some restrictions and hinderances, you will need the Build to Order 7,200 RPM drive for sure as you need space and speed.
You can have 8GB of RAM from Apple or place 16GB in yourself for a lot less than Apple charges for 8GB. However you need to be handy with tiny screws, or have a local specialist do the 16GB for you.
Your probally better off with a MacPro than a MacBook Pro.
The MacPro is more powerful, and easier to get inside and do things, lasts longer, more ports, more drives, more storage for video, fast external RAID 5 setups etc.
So if you can get into a MacPro, that would be a better option for video.

  • Need some advice from MacBook Pro users

Hi all. I've been using Windows for as long as I've ever owned a computer. I have a background in graphic design and finally came down to needing a notebook. After some careful consideration I've decided to go with a Mac. I have used them before in the past on job and off and I've had some bad and good experiences with the Mac.
What I am trying to figure out is I have heard the Macbook pro has some heating issues. I am also not sure if I really need the macbook pro. I could easily just use the 13' inch without the graphic card. What I typically do is design in photoshop, dreamweaver, surf the net, etc. Basically it is a business computer. I don't use it to play games and as such I want to make sure I am making the right choice.
Is the Macbook 15' right for me? I am worried about over heating issues.
Also I could easily buy the 13' and just bump the ram to 2 gigs. I just wanted to see what everyone thought. Any advice?
      Windows XP

I just updated to the MacBook Pro 15 from a PowerBook 12, the MBP does seem a bit hotter than the PB but its not that bad of a problem, at least not when using Photoshop and Illustrator.
However, in terms of design, if you will be using the notebook as yoru primary design machine without an external monitor, the MBP 15 would be a much better choice. I'm an art director and I only use the notebook when I'm on location, most of the actual design work is still done on a G5 desktop. The MBP's screen is actually big enough to be productive in Photoshop and other design software, but the smaller screens like 13" can be a bit tough on the eye in the long term, managing screen real estate can also be annoying. Not to mention, the new glossy screen is very beautiful.

  • MacBook Pro will not boot up

    Hello,
My three-month-old MacBook Pro refuses to boot up. The problem began about two days ago, and since then, the situation hasn't changed. When I press the power button, the Apple logo on the boot screen appears, but it quickly flashes on and off, with a "no symbol" and a symbol consisting of a folder with a question mark on it flashing at random concurrently. I really need my MacBook Pro to boot up, because I require  it for homework that is due tomorrow. I have never dropped or even scratched this computer, and I always use it in a cool and dry environment, so I don't think it could have been anything to do with overheating. But I'm no expert. Does anyone know what I can do? Thank you so much, in advance!

Usually the flashing question mark means that the computer can't find a bootable device. Your hard drive may be damaged.
Try booting into your Recovery partition, holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Use Disk Utiity to both verify ad repair your hard drive. If the drive cannot be repaired, called back (you can access Safari from the Recovery partition).

  • MacBook Pro for FCPX

    Hey guys,
To begin with, I have a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition and usually record in 1080p at 60fps. I make videos of surfing and extreme sports with it
in Final Cut Pro X. I also upload my videos to YouTube, download and watch HD movies, and just common surfing on the web. My school has just decided that we need a MacBook Pro as our new IT tool. I am currently using a late-2012 iMac with the following specs:
    -2.9 GHz i5 quad-core processor (turbo-boost to 3.6)
    -8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    -1 TB Hard Drive
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 512 MB Graphics Card
    -Serial- CO2KGQAFDNCV
I am fairly pleased with using my current computer for everything except for workload applications like Final Cut X, Appearture, ect. I am not pleased with the export and render time of Final Cut Pro X as it usually takes up to and hour.
The MacBook Pro that I am thinking of getting is the 13.3' Late-2013 Retina model with
    -i7 2.8 GHz dual-core processor (turbo-boost to 3.3)
-8 GB or 16 of RAM
    -256 Flash Storage
    -Intel Iris Graphics
-External Passport Hard Drive (for video projects)
Would this be enough for what I am currently doing with my computer? Should I get 16 RAM or not?
I opted out of the 15 inch because I am looking for a fairly portable computer and I really don't need a bigger screen.
    Thanks for any opinion

    Yes, get the i7.
Not a waste on money for video and rendering.
