Do I need a new optical drive?

My CD/DVD drive stopped working a few weeks ago.  It is recognized by Windows but discs are not recognized.
My system:
dv6-1350us
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
optical drive:  CDDVDW TS-L633M
What I have already done:
Uninstalled and re-installed the drive
Looked for new drivers (don't see any)
Ran the Microsoft Fix-It...  it said there may be a problem with the drive
Ran the HP troubleshooter...  it recognized a blank DVD-R but would not do a write test...  did not recognize a blank DVD +R DL or any other DVD's or CD's (blank or otherwise).
Have I exhausted my troubleshooting options?
I am no longer under warranty and if I need to buy a new drive what do I need to know to make sure it is compatible with my notebook?  I don't want the same model I have now since a lot of people seem to have had problems with it.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I added a screen shot of the price and of the part for your notebook and you can also check this link if it will work for you:

  • Need a new optical drive- Can anyone recommend a good vendor?

I need to put a new optical drive in my iMacG3 600. The drive technically works fine as a drive but won't take or eject disks well. I'm going to put in a combo drive since I'm going to the troubl to replace it.
I found a couple of places on line but have never dealt with either before and am looking for some advice. The two vendors are Fastmac and www.mac-pro.com. Anyone know anything about either? Can you recommend an alternate reputable dealer who isn't going to charge $200 for a combo drive?
    Thanks,

Hi R. Daniel Paddock, and Welcome to Discussions!
The only other site I know of off of the top of my head is Wegener Media. They have a Slot Loading combo drive for $149. That's still a lot of money, IMO.
Optical drives are a risky thing to buy secondhand off a place like eBay, so it may be harder to find a cheaper alternative.

  • Help needed installing new optical drive in a G4 Cube

Long story short, my Cube's optical drive died a few months back and after trying all of the standard troubleshooting procedures (restarting, resetting the PMU, etc) I have since removed the drive altogether. Last night, I successfully ran the Cube with an optical drive taken from a trashed 2006 MacBook, but there is one small catch: with everything correctly connected, the new drive and the old circuitry do not fit back into the housing (link goes to image of the conundrum: http://img683.imageshack.us/i/picture1wv.png/)
Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can fix this? The new drive is considerably smaller than the original, and I have a good amount of room to stuff other wires in there for some sort of adapter. Ideally, I am looking for a slim ATAPI to slim ATAPI cable that is about 6" long, but I have yet to find anything of the like. Any thoughts?
(Note: a Western Digital Caviar 80GB HDD was installed about 18 months ago and is currently set to slave in order to run the new optical drive. Also, I have not been able to test sound as I do not have USB-powered speakers.)

I don't have a laptop but I believe that laptop drives are not the same size as the standard 5.25 inch drives in desktop computer. It would probably be cheaper and easier to simply buy a new optical drive of the correct size.

  • Need help with my new optical drive

    Hey guys,
So I recently bought a new optical drive because mine had died out a long time ago and was making plans to upgrade to snow leopard (currently running 10.4.11)
So I installed it and everything and everything seems to be going right (hearing the disk spinning) so I tried a dvd with it and nothing came up, went to system profiler to ata and burning, and they found nothing. Perhaps a misconnection on the resemble? Also I noticed if I hold my eject button its to no avail as well. Either way I'm gonna open her up later on tonight and double check. But any ideas?
    My old model was a UJ-857-C and I put in a UJ-867.

    User Kappy posted these tips:

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • I can't install Snow Leopard on a brand new hard drive with a brand new optical drive.

I need help please. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. The hard drive crashed a while back so I bought a new one. The original Snow Leopard disc that came with it was scratched so I bought a new one of it as well. After trying/failing to install Snow Leopard on the new hard drive about a dozen times I bought a new optical drive as well. I installed the new optical drive today, tried to install Snow Leopard again and STILL got the same installation error messages. Any help that anyone might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Last error message:
Install failed: The Installer could not copy the necessary support files.

Did you partition and format the new drive first?
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. Upon completion quit Disk Utility and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • New Optical Drive, Not Recognized

New optical drive replaced in a Satellite 5205-S503. The previous drive was recognized, powered up, but recently played nothing. I replaced it with another TEAC DW-224E. This drive powers up when I place a CD in it, but is not being recognized. I did not think I needed drivers because I am using Windows XP Pro. Because it is clearly powering up and spinning a disc, I am assuming that it has been connected properly internally.
    Help!

Did you follow instructions like those here?
How to remove and replace laptop DVD/CD-rom drive
Open Device Manager and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. Can you see the drive there? If so, right-click it and click Uninstall. Reboot to reinstall the driver.

  • I have a macbook pro, a little over 2 years old, have been advised I need a new hard drive....after 2 years!!!!

My macbook pro is just over 2 years old....for the last couple of months it has been running very slowly, the beachball is in permanent residence!
I have been advised I need a new hard drive....after only 2 years I'm not at all impressed. Is this normal?

Over a very large sample of drives, these drives are very reliable, despite being moved around inside laptops.
You do not have a very large sample, you have ONE drive. Anything that happens, from having it run for twenty years to having it die on the first day, is within the normal range.
The rapid resolution to your problem IS to replace the drive. At your leisure, you may find that after re-writing every block with Zeroes (a process that can take half a day and has no guarantee of success) enough spare blocks can be found to return the drive to service. Or maybe not. If you are willing to invest the time and energy to do this, you may get a nice backup drive, or you may get a doorstop. No one can predict ahead of time.

  • I think I need a new Hard Drive

iMovie keeps crashing. Thus, I think I need a new hard drive for my 2001 dual 800 G4 (Quick Silver). Can someone please tell me the best place to buy a new hard drive, how to install it, and then how to transfer everything over to the new one and thus remove the old on.
Thanks so much to anyone that can be of assistance!
    Stuart

    Hi Stuart-
You can buy a good hard drive here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
I would recommend the Seagate 120 gb hard drive. Your system is limited to up 128 gb, thus the recommendation.
You can follow the following guide to add your new hard drive:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/add2nddrive/
After you format the new drive, install your OS X Tiger on the new drive (I also recommend updating the OS X to 10.4.8)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
After you have finished installing the OS to the new hard drive, the OS should prompt you, asking if you would like to transfer files. Just follow the prompts, and you'll soon be done.
When the transfer is done, and you are satisfied that all is well, you may consider reformatting the old drive (losing all previous data) and using the newly formatted old drive for backup.

Hi everyone, my son has a Touchsmart 310-1126.  We need a new hard drive.  Any idea where to find one or a compatible one?  I don't want to spend huge money, maybe $50 or $60.  I've found them for about $80.  Thanks for your help.

  • Help - do I need a new hard drive

I dropped my ipod - actually my two year old did in his zeal for watching elmo in Grouchland - it isn't syncing - so I restored it - tried to sync it but it wouldn't - I put it in disk drive mode and it wouldn't sync - does it sound like I need a new hard drive? When it is turned on it seems to viabrate in my hand, or there is some kind of "thrumming" and it never did that before. Thanks so much!

    Hello wesleyapril,
Yes, it sounds like your iPod's hard drive may have been damaged due to the fall and will need to be replaced in order to get your iPod fully functioning again. As to how and where you have it replaced is entirely up to you.
You can choose to have it serviced through Apple (although it's quite spendy) or you can opt to send it to a third party repair company. Just do a simple Google search for "iPod hard drive replacement" and you should receive a number of sites that can assist you.
    For example, there is [RapidRepair|http://www.rapidrepair.com/shop/ipod-hard-drives.html]
    Hope this helps.

  • Do i need a new hard drive? (screen with apple comes up & nothing else)

what has happened to my laptop?
Do i need a new hard drive, because it wont even load, the screen with the apple comes up and nothing else happens. Very frustrating!

    Hey Jim,
Yes it says verified next to S.M.A.R.T - does that mean that i need a new hard drive
No that would mean your drive is good. However S.M.A.R.T is not infalliable.
my mac is 3 years old i bought it in jan 2006
thought a hard drive had a longer life than that though???
Well normally we think 4-5 years but laptop drives are more prone to failures - smaller and get bumped more.
It seems more like you've got a corrupted OS.
I clicked on disk utility and went on my hardrive and verified disk.
So at that point you were booted on the installer disk?
You should backup all files immediately and try an archive and install.

  • They said I needed a new hard drive

A few weeks ago I brought my laptop (less than a year old) in to be looked at because it wouldn't boot.
I paid $75 for it to be looked at and I was told I needed a new hard drive.  Because this seemed
really odd, I didn't allow them to do the work.  I brought the laptop home.  At Christmas, my uncle
looked at it and said all I needed to do was to re-install the windows operating program.
Sure enough, it works just fine!!
What can I do to get my $75 back for a repair they were wrong about me needing???

    Welcome, laurimarie!
It is good to know you had a diagnostics, but I would like to further assist you by looking at those diagnostic results.  I also want to check if this diagnostics should have been covered under manufacturer's warranty and therefore no-charge.  Since we do not collect private information in public forums please click on the Messages link near thetop right of this page and reply to my Private Message request.
I would also like to caution you and others that when a hard drive diagnostics confirm a drive is fail-ing it may still be possible to reinstall Windows up to the point it physically fails.  Reinstallation is often a quick fix and does not address the root of the problem: bad hardware.  Services are non-refundable, but I encourage you to take the computer back for a re-diagnostics within the 30-day services warranty and send me a private message for further assistance.
