An "intel core 2 duo processor"  means it is Intel and they replaced the older PowerPC processors, the last of those type of computers were called a G5, both were iMac.
The iMacs "with 2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo processor " so yours can be either;
iMac (17" late 2006)
iMac (20" late 2006)
iMac (24" 2006)
iMacs have their CPU's soldered to the board and so are not upgradable. However 2.1 Ghz is pretty good. and if you have the maximum RAM your crashing may be due to something else.
When did you install Lion, I heard it is no longer for download now Mountain Lion is out.

  • Power mac G5 dual 2.3 - less than 3 yrs old - needs new processor?

I have a PM G5 Dual 2.3 that was purchased in April 06.
It was working perfectly, as it always had on Friday Jan 23 at 12 pm. I went out to lunch and came back an hour later and it was off and could not be restarted by ANY and ALL means.
I took it to the local Apple store and the diagnosis was that it needs a new processor. I have had Apples for 20 years and they have all lasted until a newer model was desired - not needed. This computer is barely over 2 1/2 yrs old.
Does anyone know of anything else it could be? I do not want to spend 1200.00 on a new processor that is already archaic and not an intel.
Also, I did not have the 3 year AppleCare on it (unfortunately) so it's all on me to pay.
Has anyone had any success negotiating with Apple for a discounted repair?
    Thanks!

    Hi LG111-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Total bummer. Without AppleCare the cost of repair has been known to be quite high.
You could just run the machine on one processor.
As far as negotiating with Apple, you can always try, however its been out of warranty for quite a long time.
    Luck-

  • I have an old MAC using OS 10.5 (does not have Intel processor). I need a new printer, but i cannot find one that will work with such an old operating system. Is there a new printer that will work with this old system?

I have an old IMAC using 10.5, and it cannot use any newer operating system. I need a new printer, but I cannot find one that is compatible with this old system.
Is there a new printer out there that will work with 10.5?

You need to upgrade OS X.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks/Yosemite- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Yosemite
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Do I need a new grapics card?

I have a factory(somewhat) Deminsion 3000 from Dell. The only thing that I have upgraded on it was the memory (512MB to 2gigs) I play a game which I think most people are familiar with, World of Warcraft. Now my question is related to FPS. The computer starts and loads decently, but for all of those who play WoW, hearthing is moderatly fast and so is loading screens, but general moving around is sluggish at best with all setting on LOW (average of 3 FPS while moving and 3 FPS standing still). I was wondering if a new graphics card would help fix this, and if so, what do I look for? I was also wondering if a new graphics card would make my youtube video's run faster while having WoW minimized, and possibly streaming with Xfire?
    Thanks,
    Zef

Your biggest bottle neck is your processor. Although WoW does use the video card, and a new one would help, it's just not worth it imo. WoW is very processor heavy and that is what will give you the biggest increase in performance.
I don't think the computer has a PCI-Express port, so you'd have to get a PCI video card and you might even need a more powerful power supply....all things that are not worth it.
You'll be MUCH better off getting a new computer and upgrading the PSU and video card on the new one. (Unless its a gaming PC out of the box)
Youtube 'speed' is generally based off of your internet connection, not the video card. As far as streaming, you'll need a new video card and processor before you can play and stream efficiently.
I don't play WoW anymore, but I can tell you how big of a different the processor makes vs. a new video card. I used to get 10-12fps mid fight / Dalaran with an old AMD 5000+ dual core, 5gb of ddr2 and an Nvidia 260gt video card. I picked up the Intel i7-970 6-core, 6gb of ram, and the same Nvidia 260gt... but this time around, my fps didn't drop below 60 no matter what I was doing.
On a side note, I guess that explains how people can be so bad at WoW. Getting 3 FPS while moving must make it hard to play well...
Although I do work for the Geek Squad, all comments and opinions are my own.

    Hello Mshlanta,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
iOS 7 requires iTunes version 11.1. If your software updates are not seeing the update for whatever reason, you can download and install it directly from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Keep in mind the requirements to download iTunes 11.1:
    Macintosh System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
    And
    Windows System Requirements
PC with a 1GHz Intel or AMD processor and 512MB of RAM
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, 32-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
64-bit editions of Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 require the iTunes 64-bit installer
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
    All the best,

  • New Processor Or More RAM?

    Hi,
I just wanted to know whether to buy a new processor or some more RAM. I am pretty sure more RAM won't help, seeing as I only have a 400mhz processor. Its just my brother wants to play runescape on it and it won't take it, it's too laggy.
    -Ollie

One trick you may try is to go to the top menu bar in your desktop and pull down: GO > Go to Folder... > and type in /var/vm/. This will take you to a directory and if you see several files with names like swapfile0, swapfile1, etc. , then you need more ram. Judging from your profile, it probably does need max ram as you're talking about running a game. Don't concern yourself too much with clock speed as the ram is of greater impact, in this particular case.
    Good luck

  • What BIOS version do I need for this processor?

I am going to be starting round two soon trying to install my new MSI 790FX-GD70 motherboard. I had to RMA the last one because I could not get it to work with anything I did. So my question is this, what BIOS version do I need for my processor to be recognized? I will be using the 790FX-GD70 motherboard with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 140W Quad-Core Processor.
And what version comes on the motherboards? I want to make sure I don't encounter problems again when trying to install it. If it requires a BIOS upgrade right out of the box, then I will take it to the local computer store and have them flash it with one of their lower end processors. Thanks in advance!
    - Jonathan

Is the CPU the 125W (1.5) or the 140W (1.3) version? The 125W is the newest and takes a later 1.5 BIOS. Look at the BIOS chip on the MB and write down the number on the sticker that's stuck on it. The last 3 digits = BIOS version, ie. 100 would be 1.0, 110 1.1
It's the chip just above bottom PCIe slot just to the right of N1996 number on the MB. (near the bottom center of MB) The thing is small so you need good young eyes or a magnifying glass to read it.

  • Pages downloaded, but I still can't open iCloud pages from iPad. Says that I need a new version of Pages on my Mac

For my Mac Pro, after I downloaded the new Mavericks OS, I downloaded the new pages. However, I still can't open iCloud pages from iPad. Says that I need a new version of Pages on my Mac.
    Please help.

It appears that you are launching the old version, probably using an icon in your Dock. That icon is an alias & is not updated. You will need to go to your Applications folder & find the new Pages 5 icon & double-click it. Once it is launched, you can right-click on the icon & choose Options > keep in Dock from the contextual menu.

  • I have the latest version of Pages installed, yet there are documents I try to open and the message "you need a newer version of Pages to open this document".  Help?

When I try to open some of my documents, the message "you need a newer version of Pages" appears; yet, I have installed the latest/newest version. How do I clear this up? Thanks.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.2 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.2 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 95 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewforum.php?f=22&sid=3527487677f0c 6fa05b6297cd00f8eb9&mforum=iworktipsntrick
Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
