Do I need a router or a switch

I have an adsl (UK) modem and it is linked to an Airport extreme giving a wireless network all works fine. I now need to take a fixed wire internet connection to a separate component of the electrical system for web based security monitoring. Clearly I could take the connection from the AE lan connection BUT the positioning and wiring in the house does not really allow this easily - so I wondering could I insert a router or is it a switch afetr the modem with one connection to the AE feeding the wireless network and a second wire to the security system?
Any thoughts ?

A router would be the best bet as it could run both at once. If you only need to monitor the connection once in a while a switch would be OK but a cheap router would be a better investment.

  • Do I need a router or access point / bridge?

Hi.  We have a MS small bus server with a software firewall.  It does dhcp and routes traffic so we don't need the router part of the router.
Wireless  N access is needed.  Will a DAP 1522 (Wireless N access point / switch) offer the same wireless performance as a Linksys wireless N router?
I just bought the DAP access point and am getting 100-130 mb/s with a strong signal.  Would the router work better with its giant antennae?
    Nick

DAP 1522 is a good acess point. It  lets you connect up to 4 Ethernet-enabled devices such as set top boxes, game consoles, or computers to an existing Wi-Fi network for on-demand broadcast, online gaming, or media streaming throughout the home.
With dual-band wireless capabilities, the DAP-1522 is ideal for wireless HD video streaming and gaming applications because entertainment content can be sent over the less crowded 5GHz band.
The DAP-1522 can also be used to create a new 802.11n wireless network using its Access Point feature. Simply connect it to an existing wired or wireless router, and you'll enjoy greater range and data speeds in seconds.

  • Do I need to buy an ethernet switch that has a WAN port

I want to buy an Aiport Express to handle a WiFi only iPad and an old PPC iMac with 10.5.8 on it that has no WiFi card.  The iMac gets on the internet from a cable plugged directly into its ethernet port (using DHCP).  The cable comes off an antenna at the front of the cottage.  A signal hits the antenna from a broadcasting tower about half a mile away.
I need to buy an ethernet switch for the Aiport Express to handle both the iPad wirelessly and the wired iMac.  Does the switch have to have a WAN port or can I buy one with five LAN ports?
Message was edited by: Roy Vincent.  Spelling error

So here's what I am planning to do.  I get myself an ethernet switch.  I plug my cable from my antenna into it.  I run a cable from one of its five ports into my iMac.  I run a cable from one of its other ports into my Airport Express.  I configure the Airport Express in Bridge Mode.  Now my wife can connect to the web wirelessly using the iPad and I can connect using the wired iMac --- and we can do so at the same time and indpendently of one another.   No?
    Sorry, but no.
You only have one IP address.  With a switch feeding two devices, it will be a matter of chance as to which device gets the IP address.
The other device will not be able to connect to the Internet, since a switch cannot "split" the connection.
Instead, you need a simple wired router to "share" the public IP address that you receive. In turn, the router distributes "private" IP addresses to devices on your local network, so each device will be able to connect to the Internet.
As I mentioned, a switch cannot perform the functions of a router.

  • WCCP: Is dot1Q trunking needed on Router I/F to avoid redirection loop

    Hi everyone,
I have a question how configure Router I/F to avoid redirection loop.
I understand Router and WAE must not be attached to the same segment to avoid redirection loop as written in the Quick Configuration Guide.
    However the sample configuration in Quick Configuration Guide does not show necessity of whether VLAN trunking is needed or not on the Router port and Switch under following environment;
    Client
    |
    |
    Switch --- WAE
    |
    |
    Router
    |
    |
    WAN
    |
    |
    Router
    |
    |
    Switch --- WAE
    |
    |
    Server
I think .1Q trunking is need to avoid redirection loop and it is a only way to achieve it in case of the router (core and/or edge) has just two interfaces.
And if the router does not support .1Q trunking due to hardware limitation or software limitation, I need to get the router had more one dedicated interface to redirect WAE by adding additional network module/card if it can.
I am afraid that if the router does not support .1Q trunking and router has up to two interfaces, I need to purchase/prepare another router to achieve it or not.
    Is my understanding correct ?
Or are there any method to avoid redirection loop other than using .1Q trunk or adding interface that is remains just two interfaces ?
Would you please let me know your assistance ?

  • Need firewall/ router / nat / vpn recommendation

As the title states, I'm looking for an all-in-one hardware solution (not software) that will work seemlessly with our xserve. Right now we are using a consumer grade Linksys vpn/router as a temporary solution. We also have a business series linksys 24-port switch, so I don't need the router to handle any of that.
We have about 15 users in the office. The vpn will need to support about 3-5 users at any one time, both Mac and Windows clients. We would like to utilize PPTP since it is easier to setup. The internet is provided via Cox cable and sits around 5MB of bandwidth.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer to base this purchase on those who use a solution in a production environment as opposed to hearsay.
    Thanks in advance.

We use a SonicWALL TZ 170 for that, and it works fine. The current product is the TZ 180, its replacement, which is a bit faster. The TZ 180 can handle 5 MB bandwidth with Intrusion Prevention Services on (signature watching on packet inspection); about 6 MB is the real limit for the TZ 170 with IPS (don't believe the marketing sheets that say faster). With 15 users in your office, you might want the PRO 2040 rather than the TZ 180 for increased processor power. Avoid the 1260, which is essentially just a TZ 170 with a switch on the back end.
Supports the major VPN protocols. If you want to use IKE, you will need the Equinux VPN Tracker client for the Macs (SonicWALL doesn't have a Mac VPN client). Note that their Vista VPN client is now in beta, people are having mixed results with it. No Vista 64 bit VPN client is even announced.
We have used it for several years with Mac VPN (VPN Tracker) from iMacs at our homes to our Xserve G5 and LAN, works fine. SonicWALL support is Mac hostile, they claim it doesn't work with Macs. Hogwash. Be prepared for Bob from Bangalor for the Level 1 and Level 2 support people, who seem untrained on the product line. The Level 3 support people are good, except when you get the anti-Macintosh bigots.
If you need to do NAPT (NAT with port translation), you will have to get the SonicOS Enhanced OS. SonicOS Standard can do NAT but not port translation. The learning curve on SonicOS Standard is not that bad; SonicOS Enhanced is a very different animal - more powerful and featured but more difficult to set up.
Sonic's business model is to pretty much give the hardware away and make it up on support contracts/licenses for firmware/hardware support, IPS, Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus licensing, etc. The hardware is reliable.
    Hope that helps,

  • Trying to connect a wireless router to a switch

We have an 8 port router in the closet(linksys) with the cable connection and in our main room we have a five port 10/100 (By linksys) switch that connects to the system just fine all hardwired, and we have internet already working off of that.
We tried to connect the WRT54G wireless router to the switch because we asked at the store and they said if we had a switch already that's what we'd want. I changed the ip address on the new router to the 192.168.2.1, saved the settings and then tried to plug it into the switch. As soon as we plugged into the switch, anything else connected to the switch stopped getting internet. I also tried to just leave it at the default and same problem. I tried the 'change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 and disable DHCP server and then going into advanced and changing gateway to router and again, same problem. Regardless of what I do anytime I plug that wireless into the switch everything on the switch stops working.
How would we get both the switch and the router to work?

I assume that you want your wireless and your wired computers to all share the same network, and all connect to the Internet through your 8 port router in the closet.  And the 8 port router uses the 192.168.1.x  address space.  ---  is that all correct?
If so, disconnect the WRT54G from the rest of your network, then using a computer wired to the WRT54G, do the following:
    a)  set the "Local IP address"  (not the "Internet Connection Type"  address)  to 192.168.1.2    I am assuming that you are not using this fixed adddress elsewhere in your network.
    b) Leave the DHCP server set to "disabled".
    c) Wire any port from your 8 port router or switch, to any numbered port on the WRT54G.  Do not connect anything to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.
Note that with this setup, your 8 port router will control your router settings (port forwarding, DHCP server, firewall, etc.).  Your WRT54G will only contol your wireless settings.
If you need more help, please state the model of your 8 port router and switch.

    vlan1 default
    vlan2 networkA
    vlan3 networkB
    vlan5 Modem

    port 19-26 (3UP) Network B
port25 (2UP,1T) router lan1 port connect to the switch port 25
it can separate 2 different network, if i plug a cable to port1 i can manage the switch
but if i use vpn to connect the router i wont able to ping or see the switch, but i can ping the router and all other computers are on vlan2, and vlan2 not able to go to manage the switch too or ping it
what should i change to let vpn can access to vlan1 to manage the switch, thanks

    Hello Gianluca,
In order for this setup to work, you will have to have a router that supports multiple vlans. You did not mention the model of the router or if it does this so I wanted to first mention that.
I understand your setup to be as follows- Internet -> Router -> Switch 1 -> Switch 2
On each port that connects a network device you will want to set the following-
    Trunk port
    Vlan settings of 1U, 2T, 3T
This allows default vlan of 1 and also other vlans
On other ports (1-4 , 7-9) you want to set them as follows-
    Access port
    Vlan of 2U OR 3U
This puts that port into the vlan of your choice
This will be the configuration needed, but again, you must have a router that will support vlans or multiple subnets.

  • Help with simple interVlan routing on L3 switch

Hi all - I just can't get my head around this really simple interVlan routing issue.  I have two VLANs (1 & 6) on a 3560 L3 switch.  I simply need to route between them.  Here is how I have it set up:
Firewall is the VLAN1 client's default gateway:
    10.10.22.1 /255.255.255.0
    3560switch config:
    ip subnet-zero
    ip routing
    VLAN1:
    (hosts on 10.10.22.x/255.255.255.0; gateway 10.10.22.1)
    int vlan1
    ip address 10.10.22.254 255.255.255.0
    no shutdown
    VLAN6: (hosts on 192.168.25.x/255.255.255.0; gateway 192.168.25.1)
    ip address 192.168.25.1 255.255.255.0
    no shutdown
    ip classless
int gi0/31 (an available unused port)
    no switchport
    ip address ?.?.?.?
    no shutdown
Is the issue that all my 10.10.22.x clients are going to 10.10.22.1 trying to find 192.168.25.x, when they would need to go to 10.10.22.254; then the switch should have an ip route of 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.22.1? Then give the router on gi0/31 the 10.10.22.254 address?

    Hi,
With the above configuuration vlan 1 users will be going to firewll and if they want to reach vlan 6 firewall should have rule to permit for vlan 6 subnet and route towards vlan 6 interface and which is not there is your network.
Just clarify few things you want firewall to come into picture for every traffic which goes between vlan or not and in interface gi0/31 you will be connecting router also is this router is sending traffic to outside world if yes then you need to change some design configuration to route tha traffic from vlans to outside world.
If you want only inter vlan routing between vlan 1 and vlan 6 via firewall then make another zone in firewall and place that in vlan 6 with ip address as given in vlan 1 so that vlan 6 users can point traffic towards vlan 6 interface of firewall and in firewall just permit the vlan 6 communication with vlan 1 and drop a route for vlan 6 towards switch vlan 6 interface.
and if between vlans you dont want firewall to come into picture then the best is create three vlan one for vlan 1,vlan 6 and outside vlan between router and firewall and drop a default route towards firewall. In this case inter vlan routing will be taken care by switch and traffic towards outside world will scaaned as per rule given in firewall.

  • "need to restart computer" after switching laptop hard drives.  HELP!

i have a 13" macbook pro. I just got an older generation 15" macbook pro (refurbished from apple) because i need the pci port.
    i switched the memory
    i switched the hard drives
15" macbook pro (the one i just got) works like a charm
13" macbook pro keeps prompting me to restart the computer after the apple picture comes up. In other words, snow leopard won't even boot up
    Any suggestions???

If you switched drives then your new computer now has an older version or an older build of OS X that cannot boot the new computer because it does not have the required hardware support extensions.
You have two options: 1. Switch the drives back; 2. Reinstall OS X on the new computer using the discs that came with it. This will not erase your files but it will install a fresh copy of OS X that works with your new computer. A reinstall will take about one hour plus or minus.

I'm using apple's bluetooth keyboard and I need an easy way to switch between the text and numbers fields instead of tapping on the screen

    While not in edit mode:
    - if start typing numbers, then it enters number mode.
    - if start typing text, then it enters text mode.
Using the arrow keys exits edit mode. So this should work for you:
1 Type text into a cell, which enters text mode.
2 Press Return to move to the next cell.
3 Press right arrow key to exit edit mode.
4 Press left arrow key to get back to the cell.
5 Type a number, which enters number mode.
Another method that requires more planning ahead of time is to format the cells as text or number before starting the data entry. Then when you navigate to a cell while in edit mode, you will be in the appropriate mode (without having to exit edit mode).
This all works fine for me. Hopefullly it does for you also.

  • Do I need a router to interface with my wireless laptop and printer, or can booth tooth.

Im having a problem interfacing the HP B210 all in one wireless printer to my ASUS wireless Laptop. Do I need a router or can I some hoe make the wireless connection using my blue tooth on my laptop. Please help.

Well, the printer does not have bluetooth so that will not work.
However, you can connect to it directly via wi-fi on your laptop.  From the front of the printer go to: Setup > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
Now, on your PC, look for a wireless network beginning with "HP".  Join it.  There is no password.
Now, go to Control Panel > Printers and Add a Printer.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Do I need a router when I have time capsule

I'm so new with iMac. Thinking getting a time capsule for movies and music so if I get a time capsule do I need a rout with it

Time capsule is a backup device not a media server.. it will not work at all well as a place to store your itunes or iphoto libraries..
Read around carefully for what people use but TC has no internal method to automatically backup.. anything stored on the TC even if you only use it for file storage is lost. if the TC dies.. which they do.
If you still want to use it. a TC is basically an airport extreme.. ie wireless router with built in hard disk drive.

  • Is it possible to sort or filter the switch routes under the switching tab?

In Teststand 3.1, is it possible to filter the switch routes under the switching tab in Action Properties?  Since I have a large amount of routes that have been created in Switch Executive, how can I filter out some of the routes from the "Routes to Connect" section?

The TestStand Switching does not provide any inherent filtering capabilities.  You do have a couple of options, however.
    (1)  NI-Switch provides the ability to set up route connections in
different groups.  The Switch Page in TestStand allows you to
select Routing groups as well as specific Routes.  It may be
easier for you to organize your Connections as groups and choose
    between different groups.
    (2)  The Property page also allows you to build route connection
string and use that string  for your Switching actions.  It
may be easier for you to build a Route string and easily change that
string rather than selecting your routes everytime from within the
    TestStand window.

  • A "Router"  or a "Switch"..which is best?

I've got to connect my old G4 Powermac to the internet with a Wired connection instead of Wireless.
I plan to connect the G4 to my iMac that has a modem and is already connected to the internet.
The iMac modem has only ONE ethernet port which is already being used by the iMac.
I have been advised to use a router to connect, and another person says use a "switch" to connect.
So, I'm confused as to which one to buy. I figure, since I'm connecting to the internet "Wired" this should probably be an easy internet installation for me.
I"m ready to get this wired internet connection going as soon as I get some informatiion as to wether I should buy the "Router" or the "Switch".
    Thanks.....

Those terms are often used interchangeably and may refer to the same product; it doesn't really matter which you purchase as long as it's compatible with your setup.
