Do i need a security program

I am a new MAC user from the PC world.  I am use to having a security program protect my system.  Are there any recommendations for the MAC Book Pro?

Absolutely do not install any commercial "anti-virus" software -- it's all useless and can do nothing but cause problems.
The Mac OS automatically detects known Mac malware downloaded in Safari, Mail, or iChat.
If you need to detect Windows malware, use ClamXav -- nothing else.
There are no known viruses for the Mac platform in the true sense. There are a few trojans, such as "MacDefender" and its variants, which have been circulating recently. Your best protection from those is computer literacy, not software.

  • I have The latest Firefox installed on an older Dell, and the CA security suite thru my ISP, which takes all my CPU and causes everything to freeze when I try to access it's features. I need a free internet security program that does tax my system so much

Have older Dell Dimension 32/bit with Win XP Prof 2002. I have installed CA security suite from my ISP, which is a huge program and uses 100% of CPU on start-up & shut down, slowing everthing to a snails pace. I have removed evrything I don't need using 30 day free Revo Unistaller Pro, but when I try to access CA's Firewall to add programs to the exception rule, it will open, then freezes along with Firefox tabs and anything else. Can't even shut down from start menu. I want to get rid of CA(although it is a good program, it's too big), and go back to using my Win Firewall(or another better free firewall that's good for more than 30 days trial) and some other free internet security program that is easy, runs in the background and doesn't take all my resources and isn't just a 30 day free trial till you buy the program. I am also trying to install a wireless adapter so I can drop my ISP and use the free city/county signal as no work for 20 months!

== Trying to access CA security Suite Firewall

I am the original poster, and I got rid of CA Security Suite & and loaded the Avast! which has some great features even on the freeware. No more crashes or freezing & yes I think there is a problem with CA & Firefox, but am not sure what it is. CA was a big time hog. I also got rid of my ISP and installed a Intellinet Wireless G PCI Card & now am completely wireless on my PC. Faster by far than what I was paying $50/month for & I use my Windows Firewall.

  • Do i need to purchase additional security programs to repair and protect mac book pro?

I recently got a MacBook Pro and I am wondering if I need to add programs to scan for problems and repair the computer and to provide additional security against viruses.  I installed a program called MacKeeper Pro and it scanned the computer and said I had over a thousand issues and is at critical level.  To fix it I have to activate the program and pay $38.  I'll do it if I need to but I don't want to get scammed.  Any advice would be great!  Thanks

    Do you need special software?
To repair your macbook:  No. OS X has all of that taken care of.
To Diagnose problems: There is no program (aside from apple certified and heavily guarded software) that will diagnose every problem with your mac.  Most programs are simply diagnostic programs aimed at one specific part of your macbook, e.g. the battery, or the wifi antena, or SMC hardware.
To protect your machine from viruses: Still no. Macintosh viruses are in most cases rare.  The last wide-spread mac virus I can think of took place a few years back, and exploited a loophole in the way java was designed at the time.  At the same time, virus scanners often slow down machines, causing a drop in performace since the computer is cosntantly monitoring and scanning files. In the end, virus scanners for MAC OS X have too many consequences, and not enough pay back to be worth it.
On a different note, I have often noticed that some virus programs will produce an advertisment in the form of a "demo."  The demo program scans your computer, says you have thousands of errors and critical issues, and says you have to pay to fix them.   If you buy them, they typically turn out to be a scam, or immediatly turn around,  ACTUALLY SCAN THE COMPUTER, and find zero threats.  Dont always concern yourself with what advertisment software says about the state of your machine.

  • What virus security program is recomended for Firefox 4?(I use windows xp)

My computer says it does not have a security program installed.
    Do I
    1) need one with Firefox as a browser
    2) Which one is best?
I have a Windows XP Dell Computer 2 GB memory plus external memory of 465 GB.
Can anyone help with this or a better virus scanner, computer cleanup mechanism?

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • Security program

Do I need to purchase some kind of computer security program for the MacBook that I am contemplating? Something like Norton 360? or does the MacBook come with it already?

    Not likely. See the following:
Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

  • ITAR - ABAP Secure Programming

    Hi Experts,
I would like to know whether there is any information available on ABAP Secure programming to adhere to ITAR in SAP R/3 4.7.
Would appreciate if you give any pointers.
    Thanks,
    Best regards,
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant
ITAR deals with export regulations concerning also cryptographic products.
In general there is (by default) no crypto contained in SAP R/3 4.7 that falls under ITAR. However, if you start to modify or add ABAP code and include any crypto functionality, you are responsible to adhere to ITAR yourself.
Usually the SAP secure programming guide dictates to SAP programmers to include any cryptographic functionality (when needed) as a "pluggable function". This means that the code must be able to run without crypto, even if it is then not safe.
    I hope that this helps.
    Best regards, Kristian

  • How can I remove viruses off my computer? I have mac OS X, but I clicked on a website on google and it didn't open. Instead the security program popped up and said that my computer is at risk of a crash and has detected several viruses!?!?! AAAAHHH!?!?!

    MnM
It's probably the MacDefender scareware trojan horse. If you have this here is how to remove it.
    1. Open Activity Monitor look for MacDefender process double click on it and hit quit or force quit.
    2. Go to System Preferences, Go to accounts, Go to login items look for anything related to MacDefender hightlight it by clcking on it once. Then hit the minus sign to remove it.
    3. Go to applications folder and drag MacDefender to the trash.
    4. Open finder and do a search for Macdefender and remove anything you see related to MacDefender.
    5. Open Spotlight (the little magnyfing glass in the menubar far right corner) and do a search for MacDefender.
    6. Restart your computer and empty trash.
    7. If you feel you need to have virus protection for your Mac use ClamXav. It's the recommended AV program for MacOSX. Hope this helps.

  • If the iMac is suppose to be secure from viruses, malware, spyware and other internet threats, then howcome i have seen internet security programs for the iMac?

on the website it clearly stated "It’s highly secure and reliable"  and that "You don’t need to buy software to speed it up, keep it safe, or get it to work better."  and it also says that "The built-in defenses on a Mac help keep you safe from viruses and malware without the hassle of constant alerts and sweeps."   If this is the case, then howcome in download .com, i have seen internet security programs for the imac?
So if one day i accidentelly stumble across a website that has malware in it, will the imac protect me?
Theres this website that i feel to afraid to go to because some people reported a malware threat on that website. But will i be able to safely go to that website with the imacs security?
Im just confused that there are these internet security programs for the imac despite of the imacs built in security.

In addition to Kappy's excellent advice, you need to remember that only you can protect yourself (and your Mac) - for instance, I never go near any torrent site. Not only are most torrent downloads illegal, but quite a few softwares on those sites contain some not-so-nice additions (malware, etc). So, no, your Mac would not protect you there - you need to protect yourself; it is called "responsible websurfing".
I only download software from reputable sites (i.e. the developer); I don't go to questionable sites at all (there is a great plugin for Firefox called "WOT" - it grades the sites from excellent to "poor reputation") - if you use Safari, check to see if it is available there. And I don't download "free" software or music or whatever that costs elsewhere - I pay for it.

  • Using all types of resultset Objects i need a single program

i think all of u know that there are 8 types of resultset objects are there in jdbc technology i.e
    # next() - moves the cursor forward one row. Returns true if the cursor is now positioned on a row and false if the cursor is positioned after the last row.
    # previous() - moves the cursor backwards one row. Returns true if the cursor is now positioned on a row and false if the cursor is positioned before the first row.
    # first() - moves the cursor to the first row in the ResultSet object. Returns true if the cursor is now positioned on the first row and false if the ResultSet object
    does not contain any rows.
    # last() - moves the cursor to the last row in the ResultSet object. Returns true if the cursor is now positioned on the last row and false if the ResultSet object
    does not contain any rows.
    # beforeFirst() - positions the cursor at the start of the ResultSet object, before the first row. If the ResultSet object does not contain any rows, this method has
    no effect.
    # afterLast() - positions the cursor at the end of the ResultSet object, after the last row. If the ResultSet object does not contain any rows, this method has no effect.
    # relative(int rows) - moves the cursor relative to its current position.
    # absolute(int n) - positions the cursor on the n-th row of the ResultSet object.
Using all these result set methods i need a sample program all these methods must be used in a single program itself

They'd be especially wrong to think that the methods you mention are "types of resultset objects".

    Hi All.
I'm trying to setup VPN connections on 2 different routers and I'm not sure about that Do I need a security license to setup VPN connection on router?
    First one is 1941-K9 site-to-site.
Second one is 887G-K9, EasyVPN connection.
Both of them don't work properly. What do I need to check on both routers to see if they're abled for vpn connection, maybe some commands as well.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,

yes, for VPN you need a security-license.
The 1941 should show the following line:
    rtr-01#sh ver | b Technology
Technology Package License Information for Module:'c1900'
    Technology    Technology-package          Technology-package
                  Current       Type          Next reboot
    ipbase        ipbasek9      Permanent     ipbasek9
    security      securityk9    Permanent     securityk9
    data          None          None          None
The 887 comes by default with the "Advanced Security" feature-set. That's all you need for that device.
