Do i need a 'wireless router' to share ISP w/ adjacent computers?

How to share my ISP connection with 2 other computers belonging to family in adjacent rooms.
Do I understand correctly that I must getting a 'Wireless router'?
Is that the onlyest &/or bestest way to do so?
And how to insure privacy of all? Do I understand correctly that a wireless router will have instructions and we should each be able to have a separate password and therefore secure separate privacy with no spying.
There's no phone lines in other rooms ( if that has anything to do with it?)
We're not hackers and not computerly sofisticats, obviously or I wouldn't to be axing this Q.
I'm now getting DSL broadband thru my home phone line in the wall hooked up by wire to my DSL modem and then to my MacMini.
I think this is a basic Q, but I've never 'networked' with other computers, and don't know nuthin bout no routers.
Would appreciate helpful direction.
Oh, and you will be thank ed.

You need a router, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a wireless one. You could run network cables to the other two rooms from a wired router. Most wireless routers also have wired ports, so you can mix the connection types as well. Privacy within your network depends most on if the connected computers have sharing turned on. Beyond that, a wireless network can allow others to see the information you are passing to the router, although it would take time to decode the information and some degree of skill. Some Macs are also not well equipped to perform such snooping, depending on the wireless support they have. If you wish to use wireless to do your internet connection sharing, you will also need to be sure all the systems have wireless capability.

  • Can I use a wireless router to share a USB broadband connection

Hi - I have an emac or a mac minin which have a USb boradband modem. I use airport from the emac to allow me to connect from an airport enabled powerbook when it is at home.
Rather than getting an airport card for the mac mini, could I use that as the primary conection to the internet (via the USB modem) and then get a wirless router (eg netgear MR814) an I use a wireless router to share the USB broadband connection to the 2 airport enabled macs?
    Or do I either:
    1) need to get airport for the Mac Mini
    or
    2) Get a ethernet modem to plug into the wireless router
    Any advice appreciated?

  • Best wireless router too share Verizon Wireless USB720 connection?

Our connection with Verizon Wireless via USB720 modem on an older Imac keeps dropping because we us that via airport to connect 2 other Macbooks. In research, I guess it's because airport and EVDO share a similar RF. Anyway, I need a wireless router for the USB720, and I don't have a clue where to start. What's the best router? Am I going to have to install the VZ Manager for the USB720 on the router, via the Imac?

check out the 3G/cellular routers from Cradlepoint.
The best one for home use is the http://3gstore.com/MBR1000 because of its WiFi N wireless range.
You won't use/need VZAM. you connect via airport or ethernet cable to the MBR1000

  • Advice needed on wireless router

    Hello
I currently need a wireless router to give my wireless clients an internal address range e.g. 10.1.1.x/24
But, I need to configure the router WAN port on a different subnet (using static ip e.g. 172.30.30.1/24) and obviously with another uplink router say, 172.30.30.254/24 and manual dns address.
I need the wireless router to NOT run network address translation on wireless clients making requests, i.e. so the requests come out with their original IP addresses 10.1.1.x. This is because another device upstream does this and we need to see the clients original source ips.
My questions from looking around at forum posts:
    - is this achievable on the wrtg models e.g. wrtg54g, with the option to set "router mode" instead of "gateway mode" ?
    - is this achievable on the newer e1000 by disabling nat mode, or does this do something different.
    Please could someone advise me.
    thanks

Yes, that's possible. Set LAN and internet connection as needed and disable NAT (aka "router mode").

  • Wireless connection - do i need a wireless router or can i go via  macmini?

    Hello all
Bit of a newcomer to the whole networking side of things so excuse my ignorance.
I have a mac mini set up to the internet through a cable modem. Can I use airport to connect my new macbook to the internet via my mac mini or would i have to set up some kind of wireless network to to this? reluctant to shell out for a wireless router or one of the more expensive airport bits of kit if i dont have to!
    any advice much appreciated!

Just reading the wireless posts. Here's a stupid question, although I think I know the answer? I have an iMac G5 running Panther - without an Airport card - connecting to the internet via Ethernet and a cable modem. Can I share this internet connection with my new Leopard MacBook via Airport?

  • E1200 wireless works great, but needing another wireless router to hardwire connect to AVR

I have an e1200 Linksys router hooked up and working well, a wired connection to my first computer a wireless connection to my second (laptop) in the basemen and to my HDTV. My question is what Linksys device would I need to enable me to get a wireless connection in the basement to then hardwire connections to my Blue-Ray player and my HK AVR-3650. Any advise would be a great help as in I have no clue on what I need, but again I would like to somehow take a wireless signal from one wireless router to another to then have wired connections from both wireless routers. Also, was the e1200 not the right router or can I still make something out of it? Thanks in advance - Ohio

Aside from powerline adapters, you may consider as well WES610N. It is a wireless switch that you can connect to your home/main router to extend your existing network wired and wirelessly. It has 4 ethernet ports on the back for you to connect your wired devices to your network. For more information about this device, refer to these links: Expanding your home network using a WES610N Dual-Band N Entertainment Bridge, Linksys WES610N Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Is is possible to use a netgear wireless router to share a cable internet connection between an airport express and a Sony BD player?

    Hi,
I have a couple of netgear wireless routers (WGR614, WPN824 v3) as well as a Belkin wireless router (F5D8233-4v3) lying around, and was wondering if it is possible to use any of these to share the internet feed from a cable modem to both an airport express and a Sony Blu-Ray Player?  I connected the WPN824 router between the cable modem and the airport express but the airport express will only give an orange light then as if it does not have internet access.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

What you are basically attempting to do is extend the Belkin router with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) via a wireless connection between them. This method is known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Unfortunately, WDS is not a standard and router manufacturers implemented, in most part, to only work with their products ... so it will be very unlikely that you can create a WDS between your Belkin and the AX. There have been a few Belkin model that have been updated by third-party firmware that support WDS, but the models you listed are not any of them.

  • Use WRTP54G-ER wireless router with other ISP?

I got a Linksys WRTP54G-ER router with 2 phone ports from Circuitcity. We have Cable phone, and internet services with Times Warner.
On the package of the router it shows "Wireless-G broadband Router with 2 phone ports, Configured specifically for Earthlink trueVoice services"
Will this router works with the system we now have?

Yes it will work fine with the Cable Connection ...if you want to use Phone service you need to contact the Earthlink .... voice service provider ...

  • Can you use the Time Capsule as a wireless drive to share music on multiple computers

Does anyone know whether you can use the time capsule almost as a nextwork drive of sorts (i.e. to share Music etc amongst a few computers)?

The TC is a dumb hard drive inside an apple extreme router.. with a couple of knobs on.
It has no media servers.. and very little flexibility.. indeed it serves files.. AFP or SMB.. and that my friend is that.
So if you want a media server in the network..then a mini is a better proposition. At some point, with sales of ssd laptops soaring and space on these devices at a premium, Apple is long overdue on a revamp of the TC.. it is really either time to drop it or to create something a lot more powerful.. the mini might be a cheap computer but it is not really a file server.. having so little internal disk space and lacking external connectors unless you are rich enough to buy thunderbolt.

  • Getting your wireless router to work with the mini computers and their small monitors

I have one on the new Dell Mini computers.  I purchased the Wireless-G Broadband Router model #WRT54G2 and had the most difficult time getting Network Magic installed on the Mini because the monitor was too small for the required resolution (1024x768) - this was trying to install via the CD that came with the router.
    The solution to this problem:
    1)  Use the CD to install the Router and Network Magic on your desktop (or wherever you are hardwired to the internet).
    2)  Open Network Magic; go to "Status" and download the newest version of Network Magic to your desktop.
    3)  DO NOT use the CD to install Network Magic on the Mini.  Instead - Unplug your hardwire connection from your desktop and connect it to your Mini.  Go to "linksysbycisco.com/us/en/support/WRT54G2/download" and install the newest version of Network Magic on your Mini.
    4)  Replug your hardwire connection into your desktop.
    5)  You can now use Network Magic from your desktop to add the mini to the network.  Go to "Tasks" and then "Add a device."  You will be able to follow the directions at this point.
The only other issue I found was naming the network.  I had to name the desktop and the mini the same name otherwise it wouldn't connect.
Good Luck and hopefully it won't take you the three days it took me to figure this out.

  • Need advice on a wireless router.

My Father inlaw has desktop pc running xp with a standard broadband connection(not wireless). He just purchased a macbook pro and wants to connect to broadband wirelessly. I know he needs a wireless router but what sort?
    Help appricated.

Any router will work, as networks rely on industry standard protocols, that all PC makers adhere to.

  • Which Wireless Router has a strongler signal than the E3000?

I need a Wireless Router that will have a strong signal for a 2 story house. I'm currently using a E3000 ans its not doing the job. Thanks!

I went w/ a low-end Belkin wireless router, and it's worked great so far.

  • Setting wireless router as an access point

I'm trying to set up a wireless router as an access point for a wired router. The wired portion of the network is fine and the internet connection is working.  The laptop sees the wireless router and can log in to it.  However, the wireless router does not receive an internet connection and cannot "see" the wired portion of the network. I cannot log into the wireless router from one of the wired computers.
Below are the settings I'm using:
    Wired router--Linksys BEFSR41v3
     Obtain ID Automatically
     192.168.0.1
     255.255.255.0
     Local DHCP enabled
     Start # 192.168.0.100
     RIP Disabled
     UPnP off
    Wirless router--Linksys WRT54GS
     Automatic Conifguration DHCP
     192.168.0.2
     255.255.255.0
     DHCP Server off
     Firewall/NAT off
     UPnP off
Set to Router function (rather than Gateway)
I have had to set the laptop to a static IP, since it keeps revereting to a default IP.  It is set to 192.168.0.102, 255.255.255.0, Gateway=192.168.0.1, DNS=192.168.0.1
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As you have Disabled the DHCP Server on the Router and the Changed the IP on the Router to 192.168.0.2. the only thing remaining is the Connection part that is you need the Connect the BEFSR41 router from the Number one port to the Number one of WRT54GS that should Work. Please remove the Static IP Address from the Computers.

  • Suggest a good wireless router...

    Hello guys,
Need some help here. Being a total n00b @ computer technology, I need some advice purchasing a wireless router. We recently moved to a duplex house and got a wimax internet connection for which I need a wireless router. We also have a Vonage VoIP phone using a Linksys RTP300 which off late developed some issues.
So can I get a device which acts as both a VoIP adapter and wireless router?
If that's not possible i need a good wireless router and VoIP adapter.
I have zeroed on to a cpl of linksys routers viz.  Linksys WRT54GL, Linksys WRT 310N, Linksys WRT 160NL.
    My requirements would be:
1.Being a duplex house I need good reception on both the floors.
    2.Good data transfer speeds.
3.Budget is 150$ max(for router and voip adapter).
I have a cpl of laptops(Vaio VGN FZ35GN and 3 year old Dell). Heard a great deal abt WRT54GL but a lil apprehensive abt its performance compared to WRT 310 and 16NL.
    Help me guys.......

There are few things that you need to rule out - Out Of The Box - which are the following:
    1. Can you access WPA2 (Personal) on all the Laptops since you have mentioned that you have old laptops.
    2. If you cannot then you should try a Linksys WRT54 (G/GL/GS/GX) Since you can connect older ones with that model.
    3. If you do then you might as well go with a WRT310N so that you would be good to go even if you create a gigabit network.
