Do I need AirPort?

I'd like to resist buying yet more Apple Gear if possible, although fantastic and pretty much the best solution to everything about computers, because they're expensive.
So I have pretty much ascertained that my PS3 isn't going to successfully stream from my Mac wirelessly and I don't think I can afford a Mac Mini to replace the PS3 as a home cinema system. Don't get me wrong, it is neither the Mac or EyeConnect's fault - both work flawlessly when connected via Ethernet - in fact I have streamed home video that is 20Mb/s H.264 without any hesitation from the PS3 (loads pretty much immediately).
So what solutions are there, like AirPort Express that would be able to bridge an existing wireless solution, and have the PS3 stuck in an Ethernet port?
I would connect to the AirPort Express equivalent with my Mac and then stream through that to the PS3.
Thanks.

Can I just clarify what a WDS network actually is?
WDS == wireless distribution system
WDS is used to wirelessly connect two or more base stations such that the extra base stations are wirelessly extending the network. Unfortunately each WDS link cuts the available wireless bandwidth in half. One link cuts the bandwidth in half. Two links cut the bandwidth down to a quarter. Three links cut the bandwidth down to an eighth.
Is there an ADSL modem included with the AEBS or do I need to buy one separately?
The AEBS does not include any modem. You will need an ADSL modem with an Ethernet output.

  • Do I Need Airport Express If Both My iMac and MacBook Have Airport Cards

Just ordered a new MacBook that has a built-in airport card. Also will be using my good old iMac (both running Leopard 10.5.6). Since both computers have the built-in airport cards, do I still need Airport Express so I can use a WiFi network? I've already set up an Airport WiFi network on my iMac so I can WiFi my iPod touch. Isn't it the same principle? Hate to waste money if I don't have to. Also, I've got another iMac in the house that also has an Airport card (also running 10.5.6). It's in the shop for repair now so I can't try this out to see if it works - but can I simply turn on airport and internet sharing on that mac and let it use the WiFi network already set up on my other mac? Hmmm??? Thanks for any help.

Basically what you have done is utilize OS X's Internet Sharing feature on your iMac. This turns your iMac into a "software" router. In this case, you MacBook (& other wireless clients) can access the Internet through the iMac so you do not need to get a hardware router, like an Express or Extreme base station in order to do so. The only constraint is that the iMac must be on for this to work.

  • Do I need airport to connect my new Mac Book Pro to a wireless printer?

Do I need Airport to connect a wireless printer to my new Mac Book Pro?

No and you don't have to use the wireless card in your MBP either.
A wireless printer connects to your wireless router. Any other device (computer) that is connected to the router either by wire or wireless will be able to use the printer.

    Yes, that is correct.
Did you have the instructions that came with your Airport Extreme?  Are you sure you have it setup properly?  Here is the setup guide:

Ensure you have everything setup properly.  Once you do this and if you are still having trouble, follow Star's instructions.

  • If I have airport extreme do I need airport express?

I want to add wireless printers to my network. I use airport extreme already. Do I also need Airport Express?

You could also buy any non-wifi printer, hook it up to Airport Express via USB. It has its merits.
    You get some benefits:
you get an audio out on AEX, in case you want to run some speakers in the area where your printer is located
AEX (in bridged mode) will extend your signal coverage in the area, so your WiFi coverage gets wider around your house
If you use a hub on AEX, you could hook up a printer and an external drive to it
You would set up the AEX in Airport Utility, which you already know, so there would be no other software to learn
Airport Express costs on apple refurb store only $69.

  • Going wireless with FiOS--do I need Airport?

Hi, everyone. I'm signed up to get FiOS internet later this month. They provide an Actiontec MI-424-WR wireless router. The FiOS rep told me he thinks I'll also need an Airport base station, but do I? The Actiontec is a wireless access point just like the Airport--why would I need two?
I want to print wirelessly, too, and hope this setup will work:
--Plug the HP 4ML printer's Farallon Ethernet bridge into the Actiontec. Yup, my SCSI laserprinter is 15 years old, but thanks to the bridge, it works with all my Macs.
--Plug the Epson 777i inkjet's USB connection into the iMacDV (no wireless card) and plug the iMac's Ethernet cable into the Actiontec. Here's the only place I can see where I'd need Airport (maybe Express)--replacing the iMac as the bridge from a USB printer to the Actiontec's Ethernet.
    TIA for advice!

    PhillyJan,
I do have some direct experience with Verizon FiOS, and the Actiontec router. There are some very weird things that go on between the FiOS "box" and the router, where the box actually takes control of the router's settings. Also, the only access to admin functions on the router are through ethernet, so you can't configure on the fly using a wireless connection.
However, with a little research and patience, it can all be made to work well (it certainly is fast enough ;-)). First, you have to figure out the "default" admin access settings on the router. The authentication strings for the Actiontec can be found in the documentation (I don't recall what they are off the top of my head), but it might help if you could query the person that does the installation while he/she is present.
What I found particularly annoying was that I couldn't change the settings for the wireless router (SSD, password, etc.). Apparently, these settings are controlled by the FiOS box, and will reset themselves even if you perform a "hard reset" on the router. When it reboots, the FiOS box (again, apparently) loads a preset configuration into the router. All I could ever manage to do was to reset the router's admin login to the factory default, thereby gaining the ability to ascertain the password to connect wirelessly.
Perhaps there is a way to actually change the authentication settings/protocols on the router, but I couldn't find any in the time I had (this was not my hardware, but a family member's). Again, the installation tech may be able to help. Regardless, the router works perfectly well, once you know the password for connection.
For wireless printing, I really do recommend an Airport Express. If you can manage placing it where it can be connected to a stereo at the same time, all the better. It is easily configured to connect to the existing wireless network, and it will do so seamlessly. It is also great to take along when you travel, in case you find a hotel with ethernet, but no wireless service.
Keep in mind that a single Airport Express could serve to wireless share both of your printers, using a USB hub. Hmmm.

  • Need airport utility for pc

bought airport extreme.  told to plug in modem and it would work....do i need airport utility for pc

The link that Nachos Libres provided will only work if you have Windows 7 on your PC.
If you are running XP as your profile indicates....and it must be XP SP3.....you need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows

  • Need Airport Extreme feedback re: setup of webcam

I am trying to get my home network and wireless camera feed to work together, and I would appreciate any guidance you can all share.
I have a MacBookPro 17" running 10.5.2. My internet runs through a cable modem, and then through a Netgear Router, and I connect wirelessly as does my husband who also has a MBP running 10.5.2.
I want to run three things wirelessly on the network, besides the two computers. I have two printers - a Brother all-in-one and an HP LaserJet P1006. Most importantly, I want to operate a wireless internet camera which would serve as a "dog cam" (so I can check in on my dogs when I'm away from home). I purchased a Linksys Wireless-G Internet Home Monitoring Camera (Model WVC54GCA), and was able to connect it within my home network by installing in WinXP via Bootcamp. I could view the feed through the camera utility when I was at home on my own network. I could not EVER, however, access the video feed remotely over the Internet. I have spent hours tweaking settings, uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers, resetting IP addresses, etc., etc., and even paying a consultant to come out and spend 3 hours trying to diagnose the problem.
    No luck.
Ultimately, all I want is to have access to a working live webcam pointed into my living room, when I am away from home. A bonus would be to have wireless printing capability.
The tech who came out to consult suggested that rather than my Netgear router and Linksys camera, I should get an Airport Extreme/Time Capsule and a webcam specifically made for Mac OS. I don't mind doing that, but I'm not sure OS compatibility is the primary problem, since I WAS able to connect to the home network and view the camera as long as I was within my home network. It was just when I tried to connect via the Internet that I ran into a wall. And, the wireless printing.
I suppose my primary question is: Do I need to get the Airport/TC unit and a Mac-specific webcam, or should I be able to get the camera working with my existing hardware?
Hope that's not too confusing - thanks for your help!
    Linda

Regardless of what brand of router you use, according to the Linksys camera's user guide, you need to:
-set up Dynamic Domain Name Service (DDNS)
    -use port forwarding
From page 29 of User Guide (WVC54GCA_ug-1.pdf):
"I want to access the Camera when I’m away from home,
    but somehow I can’t connect.
If your network uses a dynamic IP address supplied
by your ISP, then the IP address you use to reach the
Camera will change as well. You need to use the TZO
DDNS Service, so you can access the Camera using its
domain name while the service keeps track of the IP
address changes. To set up a Dynamic Domain Name
Service (DDNS) account, click the Setup tab of the
Camera’s Web-based Utility, then click the Optons
tab. Then configure the settings in the DDNS section
    of the screen.
Important: To allow remote access to the Camera, you
will also have to use the port forwarding feature on
    your network router."

  • Do i need airport extreme and time capsule?

I'm confused.  Do I need Time Capsule and Airport?  I want to back up and I want to have wireless to my ipad, iphone and apple TV.

Both devices are routers. The major difference is that the Time Capsule has a built in hard disk drive and the Extreme doesn't. Both support adding external USB hard drives or printers, however, only the TC can be used for Time Machine backups. Based on what you are trying to do and the equipment that you have, I would recommend the TC.
