Do I need an open serial ATA to install a Blu Ray drive?

I have a mac pro that I wish to add a blu ray internal burner to in my empty bay. However I am using all 4 of my internal Serial ATA slots for 1TB hard drives in each. I was unsure but though I saw you needed one of these to install a BR drive.
If I do need one of these for this, I could put a 2TB internal HD and free up a slot assumming that the 2TB internal drives exist now, I have not checked.
I am looking at the Pioneer BDR-205 but am open to suggestions.
Thanks
John

Cool, thank you.
Somethings just seem to be hard to find out when you don't know where to look

  • What do I need besides my HD camcorder to get a Blu Ray disc

I want a Sony HDR SR12.  If I buy this what else do I need to end up with a Blu-Ray disc of my movies?
I guess my question is: Do I need a Blu-Ray burner to get a blu-ray disc or will my regular dVD burner give me the Blu Ray disc?
Can I get Blu Ray burners that connect directly to my camcorder? I thought at the store they had one but cannot find it online.
I know I need the software, an HDTV and a Blu Ray player.
    Help. I'm so frustrated.

My previous reply got deleted for referencing a BB competitor (even though I was reccommending AGAINST going to said competitor as their Blu-Ray drive is more expensive than other vendors even after a 20% going-out-of-business sale).
I don't know if there are BR burners that connect directly to your camera.  Most likely it will be rather expensive and less flexible than a PC-based solution.
An internal SATA PC-based Blu-Ray drive (for desktops, not laptops) will run you $200-220 or so.  Don't pay more than this, at least not for the most common burners on the market at the moment such as the LG GGW-H20L.  If you have a laptop you'll need to find an external BR burner, or buy an internal burner and a separate 5.25" USB-to-SATA enclosure (to make it an external drive).
You will get FAR more flexibility with a PC-based burner than with a camera-based unit.  That said, editing HD video on a slow PC can be an unpleasant task.  It's possible but it'll be a slow process.
Also, in the interim, you can burn a Blu-Ray file structure to a DVD, and nearly all Blu-Ray players will treat it as if it were a Blu-Ray.  Since single-layer DVDs only hold 4.7GB and single-layer BR holds 25GB, you will be very limited as to how much video you can fit.  (15-20 minutes depending on quality most likely.  A bit more if you downscale to 720P.)

  • Firmware for hp bd 5740h needed, it's a laptop, blu ray drive

    Hello,
Please provide a link for firmware for hp bd 5740h , it's a laptop, blu ray drive.
    Thank you!

Can you tell us what kind of laptop it is? If HP has not posted firmware on the driver page then there is no updated firmware available from here and you may have to go to an enthusiast site to find a custom firmware. Before we go down that route, maybe you can tell us why you think new firmware is needed?
I was able to determine that the drive is made by Sony (optiarc) for HP. I was unable to locate a firmware update even for the Sony branded version so there may not be one or I may not have spent enough time looking.

  • CD/ Blu-ray Drive Will Not Open/ Function Correctly

My CD/ Blu-ray drive will not open. I can force it open with a paper clip and put in a disk that way but it does not activate and read the disk. The drive also does not appear as a file selection under my hard disk drives section of my computer.
With this I am assuming my optical drive is broken so I tried looking for a replacement. I searched for the name of the optical drive in the HP PartSurfer and it says it is called SPS-DRV DVD SATA BD Combo 12.7. Just to be sure, is that the correct part I am looking for? If so, and say I were to go ahead and order this part, how do I go about removing the optical drive in my labtop and replacing it with the new drive?

  • [Athlon64] Need REALLY short Serial ATA connector

I just bought a new computer case to place my hard drives in the bottom cage with the 80mm fan blowing on them. The only problem is that now, these Serial ATA drives are only an inch away from the connectors on my motherboard - too close even for the 8" Serial ATA cables connecting them.
Are there any shorter Serial ATA cables - or anything smaller to connect the motherboard and drives in such close proximity? Can I have custom Serial ATA cables made?

  • Need *very* short Serial ATA connection

I just bought a new computer case to place my hard drives in the very bottom cage. The only problem is that now, these Serial ATA drives are only a few inches away from the connectors on my motherboard - too close even for my 12" Serial ATA cables connecting them. My hard drives are right beside the mobo's Serial ATA ports!
Does anyone know where I can get Serial ATA cables shorter than 12 inches? Can I have custom Serial ATA cables made? I'm also aware that bending these cables could be wrong - in which case, does anybody have any clever tips on streamlining my cabling in this scenario?

  • 1.5 vs. 3GB/s Serial ATA on my Western Digital hard drive

I just installed a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue hard drive in my white MacBook. The tech specs shows that it's supposed to have a 3GB/s serial ATA, but when I check the system profiler on the MacBook, it only comes up as 1.5GB/s. Any idea why? Am I missing out on a significant amount of extra speed?
    Thanks.

From Early 2006 model 1,1 through the Early 2008 model 4,1 the MacBook hardware was limited to 1.5GB/s. After the Late 2008 model 5,1 it could handle 3.0GB/s.

  • Serial ATA Controller Card for bigger hard drives on 8600/300

    Hi again,
Can a Serial ATA Controller Card work on the PowerMac 8600/300 as well as on the G4 tower?
How can I tell if the PCI slots are the same?
    Thanks
    web dude

According to the specs listed for Sonnet's Tempo Serial ATA controller card, it's compatible with the early PCI Macs - like the 8600, as well as newer G3s, G4s, etc. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 SATA controller card has gotten favorable feedback in the Forums. The 8600's PCI slots are probably PCI 2.0-compliant, whereas the G4 AGPs probably have PCI 2.1-compliant slots. Even though the FirmTek card specifies PCI 2.2-compliant slots, it's undoubtedly backward-compatible. If you just want to use larger IDE/EIDE drives in your 8600, the (now-discontinued) Acard Ultra ATA-66 PCI controller card is an inexpensive solution at $25. Unlike the Acard Ultra ATA-133 controller card, it has the 128 GB limit, so a 120 GB drive is the optimal choice for it. Newegg has a Seagate 120 GB ATA-100 (8 MB Cache) hard drive for $55. I've got (3) 8600/300s and they were one of Apple's better-designed towers, especially with the large cooling fan in the side panel. I installed a G3/266 MHz processor in one, along with a pair of 4 GB hard drives, an ATI Rage 128 graphics card, and FireWire and USB PCI cards. It runs so well and quietly, that I'm reluctant to part with it - in spite of the fact that I rarely use it anymore. With the hard drive mounting plate on the bottom of the chassis floor, it can accommodate more hard drives than the shortened version of the same mini-tower case, used for the beige G3s.

  • Problem of SATA burner blu-ray drive vs IDE ribbon in the mac. Would all I need is a SATA to IDE/IDE adaptor?

I purchased an MCE blu-ray burner a while back in 2010 and am only now installing it, and am running into the problem of SATA drive vs IDE ribbon in the mac.
Would all I need is a SATA to IDE/IDE adaptor? Are there any details I need to know?

that one will definetly not work, notice how theres no place for you to hook your power connector in there?  going IDE to SATA is something I am yet to find an adaptor that really works well yet( that being said i only tried once.) that being said, you can definetly use somethign like the thing i link to below assuming you have a free HDD bay.   you can use it to bring one of your HDD sata ports AND power, up to your optical drive bay.  That way, theres no convertion, only a quick little extention.  They come in varying lengths from 3", (prob too short), to 8" (the one i linked to, might just barely be long enough, maybe still too short) to 20", more than long enough.
    Good luck

  • Help! I need to open my iTunes library from my external hard drive

    Hey everybody
I recently moved my iTunes library to an external hard drive. It worked great for a while; whenever I opened iTunes I made sure my hard drive was plugged in. Since then, I've used iTunes without plugging the hard drive in to sync my iPhone contacts, so there is also a local iTunes library without any files. My question: how do I tell iTunes to open the library on my external hard drive again? The hard drive is plugged in but iTunes won't open the library on the hard drive. I think there is some key I have to hold down while opening iTunes (?) it's not ctrl or option. Help! Thanks
    Ryan

Yep. You're right. My problem was that I wasn't holding the option key down long enough... wow, epic fail... but thanks! I now have my music back!

  • Serial ATA internal drive not mounting to desktop

I installed a serial ATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 Hard Drive - 300GB in my G4 MDD. I had previously installed a 120GB Seagate SATA drive into this same computer and it was immediately mounted onto the desktop after rebooting. However, that didn't happen this time. The drive installed easily but it is not mounting on the desktop. It is attached to the same PCI card as the other SATA drive. When I open disk utility, it does not show up as a SATA drive but as an ATA drive and it says it is not S.M.A.R.T compatible. What have I done wrong in connecting this drive???? Any suggestions would be most helpful
Dual 1.42 Ghz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2 GB DDR SDRAM

    Hi
If I remember correctly Seagate initially shipped the 7200.9 drives with something called Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC) enabled. This isn't supported by most PCI SATA cards (or inbuilt SATA controllers come to that) and the drive won't work. I think Seagate made a utility available to switch if off, but it was Windows only and the drive had to be installed in a PC first.
I'm not sure whether this is the cause of your problem, but more info can be found here:

  • Serial ATA / SSD combo situation

I have the 2011 iMac 2TB Serial ATA and ~275 GB  Solid State Drive Combo. The SSD hard drive is getting full. How do I move larger files, like iphoto library to the serial ATA. Will iphoto still "know" to get the photos from there? Will it know to import to the 2T serial ATA as opposed to the SSD? I am assuming the process is more involved that simply copying the folder from the SSD and pasting it to the serial ATA.
    Thanks in advance.
