Do I need Bridge?

I downloaded Photoshop and Lightroom two weeks ago. I'm in the Photoshop tutorials now. Among the first tutorials were using Bridge. I'm confused about a couple of things.
1) Is Bridge a "free" program included in the price of the Lightroom/Photoshop membership.
2) Assuming it's included int package I'm going to purchase, do I need Bridge since I have Lightroom?
Thanks,

Bridge is part of the Photography Plan.
I find it useful for managing batches of photos exported from LR but not re-imported into the LR catalog which typically comprises my original raw files.
I really don't need all the jpeg and PNG images I generate for my website and blog, sitting inside Lightroom. So its a personal choice. I find it useful.

Do I need Bridge if I already have Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5

File management in Bridge and Lightroom can easily get in each other's way, so if you intend to use Lightroom for this it might be best to skip Bridge altogether. Bridge is a straight-up file browser, while Lightroom uses a catalog model where organization is "virtual". As long as you are aware of the potential conflict points there's nothing wrong with using both (I do).
For high volume work Lightroom is a much more powerful manager. The downside is that its catalog paradigm adds a level of abstraction that can be confusing to some.
For instance if you move or rename a file in Bridge, Lightroom won't know about it and just report the file as missing. It is therefore recommended to do all such operations inside Lightroom, which will both physically move the file and catalog the change (yes, you do have direct folder access in Lightroom, it's just not its primary operating mode).

    LOL !
That is precisely why you are being told to check your preferences in Bridge CS5 and make sure that you do NOT have Bridge CS5 set to launch Bridge CS5 automatically.
If you are on a Mac, the Preferences menu item is under the Bridge menu.  In Windows it's as indicated by Robert Shomler in reply #1: Edit > Preferences > Advanced.

The full Creative Cloud of applications are $50/month.
    A single app $20 a month
And for Photographers $10/month  Photoshop/Lightroom  Bridge CC is a free app for all levels.
If you cannot meet those conditions, you can purchase the permanent license CS6 products.

  • Please don't laugh -- which do I need:  Bridge Mode or Share IP Address?

I am a newbie to this. I would very much appreciate any pointers or help. Thanks.

    Hi there,
I switched on the MacBook and hard reset the Time Capsule and even without using an ethernet cable between the two I got a happy signal from the TC to my Mac's AirPort.
I can happily get to the page on AirPort Utility Internet Setup where it asks:
"Enter the PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) account name, password and optional service name that you received from your Internet service provider.
Option 1: I connect to the Internet with a DSL or cable modem using PPoE
Option 2: I do not use PPoE."
This is where I am stuck. I do not know which to choose. The path to the end of the setup branches at this major fork in the road.
The only time I ever come across this type of information is when I set up the modem two and a half years ago. If anyone can help me learn I would be grateful to you.
    Thanks.

  • Aperture + Adobe Bridge: does that increase amount of storage per image?

I recently installed Aperture after using Photoshop CS3 and Bridge for some years. When I import images into Aperture that have already been downloaded into Bridge, does that increase the amount of storage space I'm using and if so by how much? I am saving all files to the same folders but what about the various versions created. How much storage are they taking up. My iMac 24 w. 320 Gig is almost full so storage is important.
Also, if I start using Aperture 3 to download from my camera, do I need Bridge? Any danger in getting rid of Bridge?
    Thanks,
    Cliff

    Cliff,
The first question is whether you want to run a Managed or Referenced library. The difference is that Managed copies and stores the images inside the Aperture Library package, where a Referenced library locates the master images in Finder somewhere.
The import procedure is done in both cases, but you use the 'Store Files' drop-down to tell Aperture where to store the master image files.
With Bridge, you were probably using 'Photo Downloader' to import the files to a selected folder, name the files using some options for format and counting, and perhaps adding basic or predefined metadata on import. This results in a Finder folder structure of your choosing (as well as file names).
With Aperture, you can do the same thing by selecting 'Choose' under the 'Store Files' drop-down (where you choose or create a new folder). Once you select a location, two other options become available; (1) to move or copy the files and, (2) to pick a sub-folder preset - or choose 'Edit' at bottom of list to design your own folder preset.
Once you have your location and folder settings selected, you can then use the 'Import Settings' drop-down to select 'Rename Files' option. This gives you a 'Version Name' drop-down in the pane which you can again select a preset or use the 'Edit' at bottom to design your own.
The items I listed would allow you to keep working like you have been with Bridge to import your images. If your current folder structure can be replicated in the Folder Naming preset dialog, then you could easily continue as you were with Aperture.
If you want to run the Managed Library, then importing your folders is possible, but you will need to decide how you want to organize the library structure when compared to your current hierarchy.
The thing to remember about Aperture is that 'Projects' are the only part that actually contain images (whether masters inside or references to masters outside). So, for example; you could use a 'Blue Folder' named 'Year 2010' and then have a 'Project' for each month under the Blue Folder. You could then make an 'Album' for day inside a month Project.
The result of the aforementioned structure would be a top level folder which then contains projects for each month (where each project is divided up using Albums). Because Projects are the only thing holding images, the albums use aliases for the various images inside that project. Clicking on a days' album would show just the images of that day, where clicking on the Project name would show all images for that month. The blue folder is just an organization tool to help control the clutter.
Before mentioning my workflow or suggesting another, I would like to compare Bridge/ACR/PS to Aperture work flow.
With Bridge, you import and organize images in a folder structure, then add metadata (keywords, personal info, etc.) You can also create collections and smart collections for quick references (which are generated by Bridge when asked, which can be a bit slow with smart collections). You then use ACR plug-in to make 'non-destructive' parameter decisions before sending to Photoshop for rendering and more specific edits and output.
With Aperture, you import into the library (where most of the processing is done on the front end for previews and database storage). You are then in a one-stop workshop where you just use the Inspector pane and toolbars to add metadata, create albums and smart albums, and add adjustments to the versions. At this point, you are set to decide on any output (using the print, image export or web/book album features).
In essence, and IMHO, you are changing from three separate programs to one program with three Inspector panes.
    Workflow:
I use a managed library because I have the disc space. I also like the fact that I can copy the library package once a month (at least) to an external drive and have a full working backup which can be run from that drive or copied onto a new drive and double-clicked to load it. The downside to this approach is space. I typically shoot RAW + JPEG and import just the JPEG's to start > decide on the keepers and reject the rest > import the matching RAW's to the project. I use JPEG as Master, because they are all that is needed in many cases. I can switch to the RAW version at any time if I want something more than the JPEG can provide.
My first suggestion to you would be to create a new empty library as follows:
1 - Launch Aperture while pressing the 'Option' (Alt) key
2 - Select 'Create New' button
3 - Select a location and name the library with a unique name
This will allow you to import say a few folders (make sure to copy images, not move) and test out how you want to organize the library. You can always delete the library and start over. Look in to the File Naming and Folder Naming items under 'Aperture menu > Presets' to get a feel for the options you have and perhaps create a custom preset or two. These become options in the 'Rename Files> Version Name' and 'Store Files > Subfolder' drop-downs in the Import Pane.
Here are a few links from the online User Manual that might help clarify:
    *Import folders of images*:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/#chapter=4%26section=9
Pay special note to the statement under step #5: *"The top-level folder is converted to a project. If the folder you imported contains a hierarchy of subfolders and images, the subfolders appear as albums."*
That may address your importing of current image folders (or will give you a good test scenario for the empty library).

  • Workaround for slow Bridge when network drive is inaccessible?

    Hello all,
Hoping someone has some information regarding an issue I'm having with my workflow and Bridge. I have CS6 installed and am using the 64bit version of Bridge for file management. I work from 2 locations at the moment and have a portable drive that I take with me from place to place with my work files on it. In one location I can plug the drive directly into my system via USB, but in the other location (for various reasons) I have to plug it in elsewhere and access the drive through a network. This all works fine and I have no issues with getting to my files in general. Where I do get an issue however is when I start trying to add shorcuts to the drive within the "Favorites" menu in bridge.
The short of it is that as long as I have a shortcut to the networked drive in the Favorites menu, Bridge will run EXTREMELY slow when I am at the work location where I am accessing the drive directly. It appears that Bridge is trying to look for the networked drive on all the networked computers at that workplace every time I try to access a file or even use the menu system within Bridge (to right click a file for properties for example). I can alleviate the issue by removing the networked drive from my favorites or disconnecting form the internet (that one is not a practical option however), at which time Bridge stops trying to constantly look for the drive eveywhere and returns to normal speed.
This isn't a horrible issue for me, it just creaates a lot of repeat work of having to navigate to the network every time I open bridge again at the location where I access the drive remotely, or having to constantly re-add the networked drive back into the favorites every time... then having to remove it again before use at the other location and so on. Is there a way to adjust or change Bridge's behavior to basically tell it that if the specific drive isn't available after the first attempt to ignore it from then on unless I specfically click on the favorites link? Or in lieu of that, is there a way to have alternate "profiles" within Bridge that have seperate favorites etc. so that I can switch back and forth depending on the location I am at?
Like I said, not a horrible issue, but I really like having the quick, easy access to the drive that the favorite menu provides and would love to have a work around if one is possible. I realize that this setup is not common and so I might just have to deal, but if there is a super user solution or something I can tweak in a config file somewhere I would love to know! Thanks for the input and advice in advance!

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys! Yeah, I didn't think there would be any easy answer to this one. I actually have never had any issues running Bridge with any network I've been on with the exception of the lag when the network drive isn't present. Or to be more specific, severe lag when the networked drive is stored in favorites and then is absent in a situation where there is another different network of computers present. Don't know if it will help anyone who is trying to connet to a network drive etc. but all I do to get Bridge to "see" the network drive is navigate to the desired network drive or folder in Windows Explorer and then drag the drive or folder icon over from the Windows Explorer browser into my favorites area in Bridge. It drops the network link right into the favorites menu complete with a special network icon for the link. That has proven to be the fastest way for me to get a correct and functional connection to a network drive stored in Bridge. I was doing this with Bridge CS5 as well and it has always worked great for me.
For my network drive situation specifcally, I actually link to the entire drive as It's used solely for my design work. It's uniquely named with a title specific to me and my business so it definitely wouldn't be sharing a common name with any other drives or folders on another system on the network. I save the link to the network drive in my favorites and then I only ever have to click that to get to the root directory of the drive and navigate to whatever I need. Works great and super fast at the location where I need to use the network drive. Maybe I don't have hiccups like some because my computer has a reserved IP for that network tied to the MAC address of my computer so it is always the same IP every time.
The functionality I would like is actually very close in Bridge, with the only issue being that it insists on searching other computers on the network after every process it does if the network drive isn't present. The location I work at that doesn't use the network drive setup has 5 computers linked up to their network and so I guess it's scouring each of those every time I do any single thing in Bridge, looking for the long lost network drive lol! I have to confess this is strange behavior and really seems like a bug (albeit maybe a minor one due to the unusual workflow method) to me and Bridge is the only software I have that does this type of behavior. I can't really think of a good reason why you would need Bridge to look for a drive or folder in a location other than the one you have specified in the favorite path for it. I mean what if you have 2 copies of the same folder in different locations for backup purposes? You wouldn't want Bridge taking the initiative on it's own and accessing your backup folder without telling you,  especially if there are legacy versions of a file you wish to retain in the backup location.
If anyone ends up having a solution for this I would love to hear it! Otherwise I'll just have to hope that Adobe eventually buffs up the network functionality of Bridge down the road and in the meantime add and remove the favorites path all the time. I would think smooth network functionality would be increasingly needful and important however. I mean Adobe even offers a cloud service version of their software... That implies to me that they are aware that more and more work will be done "in the cloud" and over networked scenarios. I have my fingers crossed! Thanks again for the info guys!

  • Bridge Raw not working, cannot see Raw image in Bridge

I never notied that icon before, and I've been using Bridge for 7 years.
Usually, when you have no image previews for raw files, this means that your Camera Raw plug-in is older than your camera. People always come across this problem when they use a new camera with older software.
To be sure, we need to know which camera you are using, and which version of Camera Raw. To save typing this out for the three-thousandth time, please follow this page which I wrote earlier:
    http://yphotography.co.uk/articles/get-adobe-camera-raw-acr-open-photos/
This covers the subject, which is by far the most commonly asked question about opening raw files by a country mile.
If everything checks out fine, let us know. If not, give us more information and we may be able to fix this for you.
PS. Please just open one discussion per problem. There are three threads on this now. It makes it difficult to follow.

  • Bridge Crashes on startup.  How to get it to run?

With CS6 on Win7 64b or 32b, Bridge crashes on startup (output listed below).  From browsing discussions, I suspected it has something to do with admin priviledges so I set it to run as administrator in my account for both 64b and 32b.  Now it doesn't crash; it just doesn't start period.
What do you have to do to get Bridge to actually run in Win7 (never used it before but need it now)?  It works fine on my XP SP3 Laptop.
Actually I just need Bridge to open a jpg in Camera Raw or to open Camera Raw, in general.  Is there any way to do those two things without having to have Bridge run?
