Do I need CDMA service to complete the iOS 5.0 Update?

I'm deployed right now and I use my Verizon iPhone over wifi to skype and facetime with my family at home. I want to update this phone to the new iOS 5.0 software but I'm worried I might not be able to use my phone because i'm not in a service area. Since the Verizon iPhone doesn't have a SIM card, I'm under the assumption that the data is saved somewhere on the phone. If I were to do a restore, do I need to re-activate my phone or anything? There's absolutely no service here so I don't want to attempt the update and get myself locked out of my phone. Anyone know anything that can help me out? Thanks in advance!

Use iTunes on any computer to restore your iPhone. Your data
will be gone, but your iPhone will be functioning. You can restore
when you get home.

This looks as if it could be a problem.

Well the term "hotlined" I have never heard before. In any case many states (like NY) just passed regulatory powers to the State Public Service Commission of which it may be called something different in your state. You could file a complaint with them. Or file a complaint with your state attorney generals office, they also take on wireless providers.
The problem here is the staff you speak to are poorly trained, in days gone by it took one call to them and they pulled up your account and see the error and had the authority to remove any errors. They did not remove legitimate account actions, but used their heads instead of putting a customer off or worse lying to the customer.
Its a shame you have to go through what you going through.

My suggestion would be to do the following:
-Press and hold the power button and home button for the time needed until the screen turns black and the apple logo reappears.
If that does not work, call the nearest Apple store and ask for assistance.

The last step in the update process is a restore from the backup created as the first part of the update process.
Most likely, the update was not allowed to complete and therefore the restore did not happen.
Simply connect the device to the computer and restore from backup.

Do a reset, no data loss. Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the ipad to boot back up.
If that doesn't help - settings - general - reset - reset network settings - no data loss, however you will need to reenter known wifi passwords.

When going to your software updates on your device it will provide you with the latest available update for your device.
the iPhone 4 will update to iOS 7.0.4 provided all other updates the device is asking for has been completed.

Have you logged into icloud on the iphone? Have you turned on Calendar in settings>icloud? Are you able to connect the iphone with other services on icloud, like contacts?
