Do I need internet Protection for Macbook Pro

When I bought my Macbook Pro, I bought Norton Internet security as well. It has expired now. Do I need to renew it or is it protected?

Uninstall Norton, it is not needed, will slow the Macs performance down considerably and interferes with how the Mac operates.
All the internet security you will need is built in to Mac OS and is updated free.

  • Do i need additional virus protection for macbook pro

I have a MacBook Pro - GH2 Intel with 4 GB of memory.  Upon login I have a blank screen except for 2 silhouettes. One silhouette is my name, the other silhouette is "guest user"  When I put in my password which is necessary each time, I then get a screen "Do you want the application "open exec" to accept incoming network connections?" (I press "allow") and next screen is "Do you want the application "openinfo" to accept incoing network connections? (I press "allow"). Next screen is SKYPE and each time I need to manually go in and "quit" Skype.
Prior to this happening, I was getting the whirly bird all of the time and everything extremely slow.  I have an appointment at genius bar in 5 days but am concerned about a virus, etc.
How can I protect myself so I can do banking, etc., prior to genius bar appointment? Should I purchase one of Apples anit virus programs from the app store?
    Thank you!!!!

    Could be malware/adware.
    Try:
Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac
    Next
Adwaremedic: Removes all known adware from your Mac
If you can't download it since the malware is preventing it then see:

  • Need OS disk for macbook pro mid 2010

The hardest part of holding on is letting go. This is how I feel about my MacBook pro mid 2010 edition. I have been having issues with it so I neglected it for some time. I put in a new hard drive and then installed Yosemite. It runs a little slow but works great for Netflix and other non required uses. The problem I am having is that the processor pegs at 100% randomly. I don't see anything under the monitor using the cpu so I am wondering if I have a hardware issue. When I hold down the D key at bootup I thought it would start diagnostics but it doesn't. My research tells me I need to install the original os but I can't find the disk.
    Thoughts?

    Niel,
See if you can help this person: MacBook Pro late 2011 won't start up.

  • What is the best internet brower for Macbook Pro?

I got my macbook pro a couple month ago, since day 1, i have had the following problems:
I can't get in some websites I want, or it takes "forever" to get in.
the page gets "freeze" often, and I have to turn it off to fix it.
I get the "rainbow wheel" a lot when I m browing on the internet or even on iphoto, or photo booth
when I turn on my comptuer, it takes so relatively long to start...
I was wondering if this is internet problem?? or the macbook itself s problem??
I download opera brower, it works a lot better than safari, but still I got frustrated for the above problem!!!
please help, I m having a nice notebook, but it seems useless most of the time.
    thanks!

You should have no problems using Safari browser. Naturally it all depends upon your internet connection and you ISP's service.

  • Need a printer for MacBook Pro - ideas?

I need a printer for my MacBook Pro. I want to be able to copy, print, scan and fax, and I want wireless capabilities. Considering an Epson Workforce 845 that had a good review on cnet. Any input would be appreciated.
    Cassandra

I just ordered the HP C410a from Amazon.
It was rated very high on the list of Consumer Reports tested printers.
The Epson Workforce 845 was not tested, But the Workforce 840 and 835 were 2/3's down the list of approx.54 all-in-ones. They only rated fair at most of the printers functions. They had a $1.00 more per month ink cost then the HP. The HP, I linked, was rated very good to excellent on all it's function tests and placed 4 from the top of the list.
Interesting to me, out of the 54 printers not many had a fax function!
How can you say you are an all-in-one when you only scan, copy and print? I know faxing is less used these days but I still need it on occasion.

  • Antivirus and Internet Security for Macbook Pro

I see adds for software like Mac Cleaner all over the place.  Should I have a Antivirus program on my Mac.  I know it is neccessary on PC based equipment but I am not sure if I need it for Mac OS.  Can someone help or offer a suggestion?

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of Mac OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • Need a UPS for MacBook Pro... suggestions?

OK, heres one for you tech guys. We are heading from the US to Albania... read frequent brownouts, outages daily, surges, spikes, you name it- generally crappy power quality. So we have a host of little darling toys that we would like not to be destroyed by such bad behavior and it looks like a surge protector is not sufficient and that a good UPS might be the solution.
We dont need to necesarily keep running, just shut down or protect the batteries as they charge and protect a couple of external drives.
We have 2 MBP's 2 printers 2 external drives (plus a few ipad/pod/ phones randomly charging).
Any thoughts? Sounds like some will actually detect the outage and shut the computer down automatically? How about line-interactive vs on-line..... ?
For an extra bonus: the voltage there is 240v and we will have transformers to step the voltage down. Any problems you can see with this? Transformer to surge protector to UPC the way to go?
Open to suggestions and ideas of any specifc models that have worked for other folks.
    Appreciate the help.

  • Virus protection for MacBook Pro

    Forum,
When I was using FCE there where many posts about using virus protection applications, such as Norton causing problems with video editing.
My MBC does not have a virus protection application but there seems to be an increasing threat to Apple computers as their market share becomes larger.
Will FCP suffer problems if a virus protection application is installed?
    Thank you
    Michael Craven.

Jim is correct, of course. But some computers have to live a double life. Under those circumstances, one can use Norton or other applications that are intended to detect malware, including viruses, but in a specific mode. These applications can be turned off for detection on the fly. The user can resort to manually initiated scans on a scheduled basis. Not the best of worlds but perhaps a stop gap measure if one is concerned. You could also consider using a router or access point between you and your computer. These devices are not assured protection, but make things a but harder for the malware to get to your system. Macs can be easily disconnected from any net work and reconnected after editing, of course.

  • Do we need  antivirus for macbook pro

i am wondering if we need a antivirus for mac pro.

This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an attacker who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help. Alll versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware. The most effective defense against malware attacks is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. [Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.]
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is always a potential weak spot in the security of any operating system. If Java is not installed, don't install it unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • Need to download drivers for canon MP 280 for macbook pro

I need to download drivers for canon MP 280 for macbook pro how do i go ...

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
As you can see, that printer is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669
To get the drivers for that printer, you just have to add the printer to OS X, following these steps > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11145 OS X will download automatically the driver for your printer after adding it to the printer list. Or you can download the Canon drivers from the Apple website > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899
You don't need to get drivers from the Canon website. The Apple drivers are sufficient to make the printer work, although you may find software in the Canon website that you may want
