Do I need Lion for iCloud, do I need Lion for iCloud?

Do I need to upgradew to Lion in order to use iCloud? My mobile devices all have iOS5

I have this same issue too. If I upgrade higher than OS 10.6.8, two operations critical software apps involving 1000s of hours of engineering drawings and Business and personal files are not supported by Lion and higher. There must be a 3rd party software available to provied this iCloud service, if Apple is not willing to support their older long-term customer. If they can make this capabilty work for older PCs why can;t they do it for their devoted customers?

  • Has anyone successfully used OSX Lion with Logic 8, a Digi002 and Digidesign's Coreaudio?  Need to know for iCloud update.

I need to upgrade to Lion for iCloud and to shift my mobile me iDisk to iCloud in order to save the content I have and need to share.
Anyone using Logic 8 with this?  I want to be sure, as I can't afford to upgrade everthing just yet.
    Thanks

I can give a partial answer.
If you're installing Lion over the top of Snow Leopard Logic should be fine, it you're going to run a clean install of Lion, Logic 8 will not install but will run if you can copy it over from a working SL install.
Update: This thread has info on how to install Logic 8 on a clean install of Lion.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18270040#18270040
The other issue are Digi's Core Audio MIDI drivers, they don't seem to be Lion compatible yet so while you may have the audio part of the interface working with Lion, you have to remove the MIDI drivers or Logic chokes while booting up. (unless there are new drivers I don't know about) Perhaps others have more info on the Digi situation.

  • Do i need to move to Lion for iCloud? (i have MM and iPhone)

i am feeling like a dope these days but i have a mobile me account and i am on snow leopard. i also have an iphone.
i don't want to upgrade to Lion until i know that all my peripherals work but at the same time i don't want my mobile me account to run out without moving to icloud.
can anyone straighten this out for me?
    TIA

    Hello,
If you just do a normal time machine backup on your macbook pro and then plug that harddrive into your new air; you should be able to just use migration assistant to transfer all your files. You wouldnt need to upgrade to mountain lion on your macbook pro.
    Hope it helps,

  • I have leopard, do I need snow leopard and then Lion for iCloud?

I have just got an iPhone 4S.  It lets me have iCloud.  I like iCloud.  My Mac on the other hand does not like iCloud.  I have 10.5.8 (I believe to be leopard) do i need Snow leopard or can I jump to lion to  get my Mac to like iCloud?
    Thanks

You can jumpt directly to Lion by purchasing the Apple USB Lion flash drive installer - $69.00 at your local Apple retailer. Otherwise, do as Carolyn has recommended - $29.00 for Snow Leopard and $30.00 for Lion. You save $10.00 doing it that way. If you choose to use that method then you may want to make your own USB installer:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • Do I need OS X Lion v10.7.2 for iCloud

I just got my first iPhone (4S).  I have a wireless MAC home computer OS X 10.5.8.  Can I not use iCloud to automatically upload pictures I take with my iPhone unless I have OS X Lion 10.7.2?  I "believe" that an app that I downloaded to my phone last night automatically was added to my apps in iTunes (I noticed it was there today but not completely sure I didn't already have it).  Anyway if I can't use iCloud without having OS X Lion 10.7.2 then I guess I have no further questions.  However, if I can use iCloud what all do I need to have "clicked/turned on" for it to work?  thank you for any and all help.

As long as it meets the minimum technical specifications, although the more above the minimum you have, the better the experience.

    BE WARNED!
10.7 will not run a lot of your older software, especially PPC based programs and hardware drivers for third party printers and such.
Some of this great older software can never be gotten again as some developers decided to bail when AppStore arrived, not interested in sharing 30% with Apple and being subjected to their many "changes" and control.
10.6 has Rosetta and it run PPC based software, Rosetta is not on 10.7.
DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE UPGRADING TO 10.7!!
It can cost you more in software upgrades, RAM requirements, new external hardware and possibly slow down your machine(s) if they are dated.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Since 10.8 is right around the corner you may decide to either upgrade directly to 10.8 (if offered, I suspect Apple will to avoid 2 downloads) or wait to get it on the newer faster hardware than can handle 10.8 better than your current hardware.
My advice is if you have a Late 2010 or Early 2011 laptop you can upgrade to 10.7 no sweat, but anything earlier than that you may want to reconsider your options based upon your machines performance capability.
Original 10.5 era machines, those with only 2GB of RAM (4GB really is needed) are especially vulnerable to 10.7 performance and other issues it appears.
You may want to create a hold option key bootable clone of your present 10.6 install so it's easy to return to 10.6 if you don't like 10.7 or it slows down your machine, or software will no longer work.

  • Do I need Lion for iCloud?

I have iTunes 10.5 and an iPhone with iOS5 but all my computers have 10.6.8.  I also have an email account from .Mac that I want to save.
Can I sign up for iCloud without Lion and can I use my email on all my machines that don't have Lion?
    Kevin

Your .mac address will merge in iCloud once you sign up in iCloud. If your devices are up to date with iCloud requirements, they will be fine.
Your computer with SL will not be able to use iCloud. You will have to use it throught the website iCloud.com. You can still use the email in SL, but you will have to configure the new settings as per Christopher's link. The mobile me account will be pushed to the iCloud servers. The downside is that your address book will not sync to the other devices in iCloud and you will not have use from the computer to the other iCloud features.
It is possible that Apple will upgrade SL in the future to accomodate iCloud. So if you don't want Lion, you may want to wait a while.

  • I need to delete files from my iMac hard drive, but not from my other devices (that are sync. to iCloud). How do I do this?? My Mac is a 24-inch Mid 2007 running on Mountain Lion. Thanks for your help.

I have recently recieved messages indicating that my start up disc is almost full. Consequently I need to remove some files from my hard drive. I've backed up my hard drive onto a NAS system & onto an external harddrive. The problem now, is that whenever I try to delete a file, a message comes up saying that if I remove this file from my hard disc it will remove it from all my other devices that are syn. to it. How do I remove a file (movies) from my iMac but not from other devices.
    Thanks for your help
    Robert

You're right - this question has nothing to do with iSync!
You're best bet would be to buy yourself an external Firewire or USB 2.0 hard-disk. There's no way you'll get 150gb onto an 80gb drive - certainly not in an instantly accessible way.
Your new Mac would've had the Migration Assistant appear during the initial OS install. This allows you to connect your new and old Mac together via a Firewire cable and automatically transfer your important files from old Mac to new.
Once you've all the files off your old Mac, re-format it and re-install the OS that came with it. If you boot up the Mac from the OS install DVD, there is an option to re-format the HD and install the OS.

I can not complete my 4s setup because it can not select my att 2wire router.  It sees and just spins.  I can not go forward without the wi-fi connection.  How can I get it to select my 2wire router internet connection?

What you need is a wireless router. This will allow you to connect all your devices. You should NEVER run just a modem and PC without a router in between due to the hardware SPI firewall the router has built into it. This is leaving your PC open to outside attacks. Get a wireless router.

  • I need to upgrade Snow Leopard to get icloud before my mobileme expires at the end of June.  If I buy Lion, will I be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion free when it comes out?  When is MLion going to be released in UK?

I am running Snow Leopard and have a Mobile Me account.  My Mobile Me account expires at the end of June.  I have been told that I will need to buy the Lion upgrade to run icloud on my imac, but I am aware that Lion is due to be replaced by Mountain Lion this summer.  I don't want to have to buy two up grades!  Will Mountain Lion be released before my mobile me account expires?  If not and I buy the Lion upgrade, will I be able to upgrade it to Mountain Lion, free, in view of the fact that I will only have had Lion for a very short time and could not avoid this purchase??????

    HI...
We have no way of knowing exactly when Mountain Lion will be released. Most likely, if you upgrade to Lion now you'll be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but the actual minimum requirements are unknown at this time.
Lion is only $29.99 plus any applicable taxes and fees and available from the App Store, or you can purchase the thumb drive > OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive - Apple Store
Make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.

The address book syncs via iCloud, not Bluetooth or iTunes.
You upgraded to Lion so you could use iCoud.
On the computer. go to Apple menu > System prefs > iCloud.
    Sign into your iCloud account.
    Tick everything.
This enalbes the se items syncing to iCloud.
On the iPad, Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Create a new iCloud account.
Sign in with the same AppleID as your computer.
Settings > iCloud and turn everything on.
    BAM!
That is all you need to do.
Your contacts (and all other checked items checked) will sync between computer and iPad.
    No need to use iTunes
