Do I need Nike+ shoes?

Just got my Nike+ Sport Kit today, I don't have Nike+ shoes as I find them uncomfortable, I wear aasics. Went for a maybe 4k run, and it only registered as 1.8 km. I put the sensor in my sock. Also during my run it was registering my pace as 0km. Can someone please help? Cheers.

If you check around, you'll be able to find little pouches that attach to the laces of your shoes. I used to use a key pouch but there are ones purpose made for the Nike+ sensor. It's important that it be oriented correctly. I think if you put it in your sock and it was vertical as opposed to the way it would be oriented if it were in the sole of your shoe, it wouldn't work properly.
I've also heard of people just putting it in a little plastic bag and putting that under the laces.
Best of luck.

  • Do I need Nike Training shoes?

    Hi!
I am strongly considering buying the nike+ kit, but I do not have nike shoes at the moment. Is it necessary to use these shoes, or can the sensor be installed into other trainers?
Also, are nike+ compatible trainers included in the Nike + iPod sport kit, or are they a separate purchase?
    Thanks,
    Jimmy

I saw a CNET video on this. What they did, I haven't tried it but I figured if CNET tried it, it should work, on the video they took a ziplock sandwhich bag, put the sensor into it and then put it under the laces of the non-Nike+ shoe. They said it would work. You could try it and find out, it will only cost to buy the bag and sensor. I will say that since buying the product I love it and it is worth it! If you truly want to use the Nike+ shoe, there are lots of different styles out there and I went to a Nike outlet and bought a pair for $50. Not too bad for a great workout everytime!

  • Non-nike shoe first experience

I used the sport kit for the first time today with my New Balance shoes. The distance was off terribly - distance was actually 3.7 miles but it monitored it as 1.52 miles. I put the sensor under the insole of my left foot...and it did move around slightly during the run...Not sure if I need to buy the Nike shoes or if calibrating the sensor would help - this is a really BAD reading and I am slightly discouraged!

Of course, Nike makes a great shoe, so for most people the simplest & best solution will be to buy the Nikes. But having different shoes will not keep you from using the Nike+ Sport Kit.
I have heard many excellent runners who have a problem with Nike shoes (because they need custom made shoes or they have wide feet or any number of issues) say that they are successfully using the Nike+ sensor with non-Nike shoes. Some people carve out the same kind of hole in their non-Nike brand that the Nikes have. (It's not that hard to carve a hole to fit the sensor.)
Others have simply placed the sensor under their laces where the tongue attaches (making sure it is really secure--this is problematic with some brands). Others have used various means to attach the sensor in roughly the same position.
Still others, like myself, have cut a SMALL slit in the fabric of the underside of the tongue just above where it attaches and popped the sensor in there.
As long as the sensor is not moving sliding around freely but is fixed in position and is relatively level, your readings will not be affected.

  • Do you really need the shoes to make this product work?

I just saw some information on the TV about this. My question; if anyone can help with it, is do you REALLY need the shoes to make this work. I mean all it is is a little disk and a wireless plug-in for the Nano. It would really help me out if someone can tell me.

You do not need the shoes to make it work. Check out this thread for ways people have gotten the sensor to work with non-nike+ shoes: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=559827&tstart=75

Do i need nike+ sensor with iPod nano 6.generation?

    According to this page: http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/features.html
Track your walk. Or your run.
The built-in accelerometer in iPod nano gives you real-time feedback on your workout, and you can upload data to the Nike+ website. There’s no need to connect a receiver or use a shoe sensor to track your steps, distance, pace, and time. Just clip on iPod nano and go. In the gym, connect iPod nano to a Nike + iPod compatible cardio machine to keep track of every workout. Back at your computer, upload all your data to the Nike+ website to create personal goals, check your progress, and challenge your friends to top your results.Learn more about Nike + iPod

  • Do i have to purchase the nike+ shoes to use the nike+ sensor w/ my ipod?

I own a 2nd generation ipod touch and it doesnt need the reciever but when i try to connect it it doesnt see anything. i have not puchased the nike+ shoes and i am wondering if i need it for it to connect. plz answer!

I tried the pouch yesterday and my Touch kept searching for my sensor. It did not find it. My Touch was in my hand and I kept moving it around while I was walking, trying to help it find the sensor. Nothing... which brings me here.

  • Do I need Nike + iPod to use the pedometer?

Out of the box the pedometer does nothing. I've clipped it on, shaken it, looked through the settings/options, everything is factory default, but the pedometer never leaves zero steps (yes, I pressed the start button). I didn't think anything of it because I figured one would need those Nike shoes for it to work.

No, you don't need any other Nike+ hardware.
But you can sync your steps with the Nike-site: Nice!

  • Do you have to have the nike shoes in order for the senior to work?

Can you just use any shoe with the Nike and Sport kit?

Can you just use any shoe with the Nike and Sport kit?
Yes, if you find a place for the sensor. The Nike shoes have a pouch designed for it but no other relevant differences.

  • Which Pair of NIke+ Shoes Best For Running

I usually run 3-4 miles a day, mostly on concrete and sidewalks, which pair whould be the best for this? I was looking at getting the air max moto IV, what do you runners think of these.

I bought the Air Max Moto IV shoes. The verdict: they're ok, I guess. On my first run, they performed OK, but with a little more wear, I really noticed the flaws: very little support around the toes being the primary culprit.
Frankly, Nike running shoes suck. I wasn't too thrilled with the other pairs I tried on. The Air Max Moto felt the most like any other normal running shoe. I was tempted to buy the Moire sneakers, but the arch support was too high for my comfort. The Moire sneakers are also a whole heck of a lot lighter too.
Its too bad that other running shoes aren't officially compatible with the nano because dollar-for-dollar Nike shoes just don't cut it.
Oh, and I can definitely feel the sensor in the shoe when I run.

  • Suggestion for Sport Kit in non-Nike Shoes

Like many of you, my Nike+ shoes just don't fit me right, but I don't want to take the Dremel to a new pair of New Balance shoes.
I contacted New Balance and asked if they had plans to offer a compatible shoe in the future. They replied that they probably wouldn't since it seemed too gimicky, and they were concerned about potential patent issues. When I told them that Apple announced a couple of months ago that they had sold 450,000 kits in three months, the guy replied that he'd bring it up at the next sales meeting.
If you're interested, you should contact your shoe manufacturer and let them know. The more of us that do so, the more likely your favourite shoes will have a built-in transmitter compartment. Here's New Balance's contact form.

I just bought a gadget from Marware that has a neoprene sleeve that fits on your laces that the sensor fits in. I just got it today so I haven't used it yet but here is the website.

  • Is the sensor battery being used at all times I have the Nike+ shoes on?

    Scenario:
I just finished my run. I end the workout on the nano. I turn off the nano. I continue to wear and use my Nike+ shoes (with the sensor inside) for the rest of the day.
Is the battery on the sensor being used even after I end my workout and the nano is turned off?

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303985
According to this link provided by Casper Gemini (above), "the sensor has a sophisticated built-in power management system which means that the sensor really only consumes power when active (that is, when it senses motion)."
The way I interpret this is that the sensor will consume battery at any time that it senses motion (unless the sensor is put to "sleep" by pushing the button on the back of the sensor).

  • Nano 7th Gen resets when I attempt to calibrate niki shoe sensor

I cannot calibrate the Niki Shoe sensor.  As I get close to completing the calibration the Nano shuts down and restarts.  Also, I can never see the calibration of just doing a basic run registering as a run, the data is registering as a walk.  Yesterday during a basic run, the Nano did a restart just before I completed my three miles.
Is this a Nano defect or a Niki Sensor defect?
    Thanks,
    Ray

How do I calibrate or recalibrate the Nike + iPod system?
To learn how to calibrate Nike + iPod system, please read "Nike + iPod: How to calibrate the Nike + iPod Sport Kit" or the Nike + iPod User's Guide.
Ordinarily, the sensor does not require recalibration. You may want to consider recalibrating if your fitness level changes or if you would like to try to improve the accuracy of your results.

    You can not merge accounts.
Apps are tied to the Apple ID used to download them, you can not transfer them.

  • Receiver with non-Nike shoes

What options do I have if I don't want to use the special Nike shoes meant for storing the remote receiver?
Dell Inspiron 6400, Windows Vista   Other OS

I had the same problem and my boyfriend found online this little case that fits around your sensor and attaches to your shoe laces. It seems to work great. It was like $20 online from some chinese company i think its called the SwitchEasy "runaway". I would recommend it as I don't wear Nike shoes because i the fit. I use it with my Brooks. Hopw this helps!!

  • Do I need nike plus sensor with iPod Nano 7h generation?

I want to buy a iPod Nano just for the nike + support and logging my daily runs. is it mandatory to have the sensor in the shoe?

No, it's not. Neither the 6th nor 7th generation nano needs the sensor. I have the 7th generation and use the running app all the time. Have never used the sensor. Do expect to need to calibrate the app from time to time, as it will be off, distance wise.
