Do I need online security?

Do I need online security to shop or bank online?

You don't, as long as you do not Jailbreak your iPad. I shop and do banking on my iPad.
Be careful of phishing email.

  • Do I need to secure-empty trash to prevent fragmentation?

I now have SSD based hard disks. I keep reading a lot of mixed commentary online in forums about the secure-emptying of SSD disks...some people advise *against* it.
I don't care about privacy of data. These are all things just at my home.
My real worry is about fragmentation. Even with my Mac Book Pro, regardless of what they say, as the hard disk fills up, the machine gets slower. So I want to be ultra-cautious about how I keep my system.
Is there any value or need to secure-empty my trash as it was recommended in the olden days to prevent frag?
(And please don't tell me the hackneyed thing about "Macs dont need defrag".)
    Thanks!

And yes, here is the accurate, not hackneyed, answer (related to mechanical drives): unless you have very large files, there is no benefit to defragging a Mac.
Secure Empty writes  7 passes of random zeros and ones. So doing that to an SSD will not only not be helpful, but it will increase the wear.

Re: Install and activate Telstra Online Security
Trying to follow the emailed instructions to load Online Security onto a new HP Pavilion with Windows 8.1 .
When I load Online Security and re-start, it returns to the download routine and tells me there is an old version that needs to be removed. It goes into an endless loop of removing/re-installing/re-starting.
When I try to load Safe Browser it locks the computer after indicating approximately 75% complete. I tried several times. On one occasion I had to "REFRESH" the laptop and this re-initialised the computer, taking me back to the initial set-up of the device.
The instructions appear to be out of date.

  • Online security for dummies?

I have to openly admit that I am relatively uneducated on "online-security" threats. I thought that this would probably be a good place to get information from regarding potential threats in surfing online. (who would know better than Java Programmers?). I am hoping to get a feel for the reality of potential online security threats... Does the average person really need to worry? Or is this just another meme being sent around by the government (I may be a conspiracy theorist at heart). If there is indeed a real threat, what can you do to really help secure yourself?

Find some website talking about general security.

Re: Manage Telstra Online Security account
I want to know if Telstra online security is active on my account or any other active antivirus software. It tells me it DOES but I often receive pop-ups that tell me it's expired or inactive. I never click on the pop-ups for fear they are actually malware.
I want to know if my computer has any malware that may effect it.
I tried to access your free malware scan but couldn't find anywhere to activate it - just information about it.

  • Do I need additional security on my Macs above what comes out of the box?

I keep hearing conflicting reports on security issues for Macs. May I ask if I need extra security measures? And if so, which do you advise? I keep getting quarantine reports when I mail my college's network claiming my mail contains spam, I don't believe it does. Do any other students who use Macs to access NOVELL or any college network have this problem. I cannot E-mail documents to my school's account because they quarantine it.

Macs typically don't need any additional security except perhaps a hardware router to intercept ping attacks. If they quarantine your e-mail it probably is because some spammer got ahold of your e-mail and is spoofing your e-mail when they are sending spam. This is a real problem. To avoid getting on the spammer lists:
    1. Never publish your e-mail address in its entirety with the @ symbol anywhere except when e-mailing friends and relatives. Posting to bulletin boards be sure your real address is not in the clear.
    2. Never subscribe to online purchases mailing lists unless they have a secure server and a good privacy policy.
    3. If your friends send you a mass e-mail with your address and everyone else's address visible in the header, ask them to use BCC in their mass e-mails. You never know if your address could get pilfered by another machine's virus and sent off to a spammer. Even Mac OS X has built-in BCC support and if you need to know how to enable it, we'd be glad to help you.
On the security side of things, don't use P2P software. If you want to get downloaded software, get it from reliable sites such as Macupdate, Versiontracker, Download.com that use web browser downloads. Macs typically are quite secure, though occasionally there have been exploits found, which no one has really been able to take advantage of because of the overall security. P2P software though can be a real weak point on any machine. You also don't know if the software you get on P2P is beta or actual release version and using it, you waste the bandwidth of the server you are going through which can add to possible quarantine policies.

  • Troubleshooting tips for installing Telstra Online Security

Following are some common scenarios you may encounter while installing Telstra Online Security.
    Possible active x issues
When Clicking on the ActiveX download bar, I see the option "Run add-on" instead of "Install ActiveX"? This occurs if you have previously installed or attempted to install BigPond Security on this computer. Because the Active X component is already installed you can choose the option "Run Add-on" to progress with the installation.
When I click to download the ActiveX component, I am taken back to the beginning of the installation Wizard.
This occurs when your browser has installed the ActiveX component, but cannot run the newly installed Active X component and needs to refresh itself. Continue with the Installation Web Wizard if you have been directed back to the first page.
    Other known issues
Whilst installing Telstra Online Security you may experience issues which can cause the Windows Based Installation Wizard (WBIW) to fail.
Fail to load ActiveX download bar
WBIW freezes during System Check Stage
Fails to download Telstra Online Security components
General Internet Explorer error messages during WBIW
Perform Windows Update and remove conflicting software
Prior to trying any of the solutions please ensure you have:
Completed the Windows Update process, and
Removed any conflicting 3rd Party applications.
    Resolving Issues
You should only perform the following for issues which cannot be resolved by updating Windows and removing conflicting software:
    Step 1
Please download the file FixIE.bat file (Registers Internet Explorer and MSXML files needed by the Web Installer)
    Step 2
Close all opened Internet Explorer windows
    Step 3
    Double click the FixIE.bat file
    Step 4
Re-launch Internet Explorer application, and follow previously used link to launch the Telstra Online Security WBIW and follow required steps.

  • Do I need third security to safely bank on line

I see Norton offers online security packages for the iPad, are these needed to use Internet banking and online shopping

I bank and shop online with my iPad. If your banks site is secure - or better yet, if they have their own app which many banks do - you don't need Norton or any third party software to safely bank and buy online.

yes, for VPN you need a security-license.
The 1941 should show the following line:

Technology Package License Information for Module:'c1900'

    Hi Seeta Ram,
If you want to encrypt e-mails and give them a digital signature in the corresponding receiver agreement in the Integration Server then Security Parameters are used.
Persist Duration is used for security archiving.

  • I need to secure SOAP message sent into SOAP adapter, how to?

    Hi guys,
My scenario uses SOAP and I need to secure this SOAP message sent into SOAP adapter. As I have read in the documentation, HTTPS is possible only on the SOAP receiver adapter. But my is SENDER.
COuld you help me please, how to solve it? Or post some link? Or, if you have your own approach, to let me know?
    Thanx, Peter

    Hi,
you can use SSL with the sender adapter. Please see the extract of the SOAP Adapter FAQ (Note #856597) below:
<b>Q:</b> Can I use SSL for my sender adapter?
<b>A:</b> Yes. Normally, the SOAP adapter servlet runs on the engines HTTP port. But you can activate the engine's HTTPS port so that this servlet can receive messages sent to the HTTPS port. See the documentation about the J2EE engine's security configuration.
I am afraid, I haven't yet tried this myself, so you will need to consult the J2EE documentation.
    Regards,
    HC

Using Adobe X Pro need to secure document so data cannot be saved.  I want them to be able to fill in the form so it is legible but I need them to then print it and not be able to save the sensitive information.

To get to this event in Acrobat 10, select:
Tools > JavaScript > Set Document Actions > Document Will Save
Note that JavaScript can be disabled by a user and some PDF viewers (e.g., Adobe Reader for iOS/Android) won't support this, so there is no way to guarantee that the for will get reset when saved.

I am connected to the Internet via cable and the modem provides Wi-Fi connection. I have given access to the Wi-F to my grandkids lap top & smart phone. They are using all my data. How do I block them? I don't wish to take them off just block them when the usage is high i.e can I turn the Wi-Fi on and off as and when I want to.
