Do I need Os X Server?

Can anyone offer advice, please?
Office of 6 macs, one of which (old G3) we use as a server.
Server runs NowUpToDate and Filemaker to give us Diary and JobLogging and overnight backups via Retrospect to tape drive.
Server has external Hard disks attached representing different work areas one for Graphics, one for Photography.
Photographers hot-desk.
Workflow is to use ANY free Mac,
Transfer images from CF Card to ServerHD 'Photography'
Tidy images in PhotoShop etc SAVE.
If one then accesses these files from a different Mac, one can open the file and make changes but you are not able to save the changes, or even 'save as' within the original folder.
Ideally we would want to be able to move to any machine and access and modify files within their original folders. Is there a way to configure the Macs to allow this?
or is OS x server the only answer?
Other than the permissions issue, this basic set up suits us well.
Having moved from a one-man setup to this one, and with no IT or Networking background, I am wary of moving up to a fully fledged Server. The organisation's IT unit will NOT support our oasis of Macs in a sizeable PC desert...

Currently, everyone CAN access the shared hard

and we have no problem about this
We can all access the shared hard disk and upload our
files from any workstation.
If we then sit down at a different workstation, we
can read the files but cannot amend them, other than
'save as' to a different folder - rather than the
original one - potential for multiple versions is
horrendous...
Did you check the "Ignore Permissions" on the ext drive?
Off the top of my head...
Ensure all users have an account on the 'server' - and log in using that account name. [EDIT] No, checked this - it doesn't work! If using one user login for everyone, I have no idea what happens to permissions if more than one person accesses at same time !
After checking the 'Ignore Permisssions', Set the 'Ownership & permissions' (all to: Read & Write.) and then click 'Apply To Enclosed'. This will reset any previous permission problems with existing folders/files. New ones 'should' be OK (but I don't have time to test this).
We indeed ARE in a << 'trusted' environment >>.
I think I looked at Sharepoints before and was not
sure that it addressed this issue:

Are the terms FOLDER and DIRECTORY interchangeable in
this context? I feared that they were and so

Directory=Folder. I'm not sure whether they are referring to pre-existing folders or newly created ones. You will have to test it.

whether it's wise to spend 400quid for server
software and the housekeeping duties that would

Whatever you do will require 'housekeeping'. But once going there shouldn't be any regular issues apart from new users, sharepoints, etc. The function of OSX Server is to make this side of things easy - but is is still a piece of software that you have to learn ow to use (if you can find your way round Retrospect, anything else is a doddle
This is specifically a forum for OSX Server so you may get more ideas posting in the general OSX forum - I don't know whether there is a 'sharing' type forum there but I'm sure your requirements are very similar to others who just want to access a 'shared' disk.

How can I remotely access files over the internet using iPhone? VPN? Do I need to use Server?

Please forgive my ignorance here, as I'm a Windows expert but have only been using Mac for two and a half years. Is it possible to securely access predefined directories on my iMac from a remote computer or device over the inernet, be it a MacBook Pro, iPhone or even a Windows computer or Android phone? Is there an advantage to an Apple-only approach (iPhone and Macs)? Do I need to use Server? Is VPN the method of choice, or is there some other method? I'm not looking to do remote desktop control, just remote file access. Right now I'm using DropBox for the things I need most, but I absolutely will not put sensitive information in there, and soon I will need to have access to more than what DropBox can hold. Also it may be worth noting that I'm currently an Android user but will be going back to iPhone soon if it would be advantageous in this regard.

If you desire security, you definately want to use VPN so Lion Server will work. Otherwise, if you have sysadmin experience (or know someone who does), there are free alternatives out there for vpn that can be setup on a cheap linux server and provide the same capabilities.

You can also use WebLogic server as web server for this purpose by

So I have been browsing through a lot of Exchange Server documentation, guides and best practice but I have not found (or misunderstanding) the CAS placement for my situation.
We are currently in the process of upgrading to Exchange server 2013. As we have an Exchange 2003 only deployment, we will first need to move to Exchange 2010 and get rid of all the Exchange 2003 servers and then move on to Exchange 2013. We have a
single domain with 21 AD sites. 8 of these sites (Vessels at Sea) are connected by vSat the other 13 of these sites a remote offices with a more stable connection than vSat.
We want to have a MBX server at every site and what I get from the available documentation on the internet I will also need a HUB server per AD site. What I am not sure about is, do I also need a CAS server per site? What I get from this excerpt:

server. The RPC Client Access service provides data access through a single, common path of the Client Access server, with the exception of public folder requests, which are still made directly to the Mailbox server. This change applies business logic to clients

To summarize the question:
In a multi site AD with a MBX server per site, do I also need a CAS server per site?

While deploying/migrating, do i need to transfer server.xml also. is it required
and also there is another sub-folder server/common, schema/server/common in which there is a file bc4j.xcfg? do i need to transfer these folder and files also.

Hello
My company produces advergames. We have just made a football
quiz that streams all questions and video content (quite small
content). The quiz will be on thousands of websites and will
probably get over 4 million users within a month.
Do I need Flash Streaming Media servcie to help me with this
and can anyone give me any ideas to the problems that may arise
from streming that much media?

The answer from a software licensing perspective depends on the licening model you are on. If Unified Workspace Licensing (UWL), then you already have license entitlement to CUP under the Business Edition of that licence program. If you are on a DLU or UCL-based license program, CUP is seperately licensed.
You will need s seperate MCS server.
Softphones again depend on your license schema. If UWL, each user is entitled to one softphone. DLU and UCL each charge for softphone usage seperately.

Do I need Final Cut Server?

For my video work, I have a Mac Pro 8 core with FCP 7, and an assistant I work with uses a 27" iMac and FCP 7. He opens projects on my computer and works with them over our gigabit network. AT the same time I open other projects and edit them. Seems to work well technically, but we do run into issues when we need to work on the same project at the same time. We are also shooting lots of general b-roll the we use in the projects, and the right clip can be tough to find sometimes.
While I think Final Cut Server can help with some of the organizational issues, I wonder can the Server machine also be a client? Basically I want all the functionality of the Final Cut server software, but I don't want to lose my Mac Pro as an editing machine. Do I need one dedicated server, and then two editing (client) machines?

I am very new to FCS but let me say it adds to your work in some very constructive ways. The organization and search functions alone make more B-roll available so I find myself using it more. I have been uploading lot's of stills as well as all rights stock footage and music we have purchased in the past. When it come time to add cutaways the search function will sometimes kick out footage and still images with corresponding keywords that I would never have thought of using. We are using 3 iMacs on Gigabit Ethernet and a Dual 2.8Gig Quad core Xenon Tower (that used to be my edit station) as the server. Checking out a large project the first time takes a few minutes, but if you have your cache on a large external HD and don't clear it, the proxies stay resident most of the time, so you are just checking out the FCP project and any new material added. I am pretty pleased with the performance overall.

I work in a small medical office that recently went to electronic records. However, all our referrals come in over our fax machine. I need a fax server that will receive our faxes and drop them into a network folder. I also want the ability to send outgoing faxes from each desktop. I've been looking for 6 months and have not an answer. Help please.

you don't need an email server to send mail. Just write a small "main" class that opens a socket to whatever domain you're sending to (ex: hotmail.com) on port 25. Then just use all the SMTP commands:
