Do I need Parallels?

I'm going to be a university student next year, and I'm still deciding what laptop I should get, and I'm really interested in a Mac. But I think I'll need to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
So two questions:
Are there good word processing and spreadsheet programs already on Macs?
And if not (and even despite this), would I be able to just install Microsoft Office onto a Macbook just to use, say, Word, or would I need to install that Parallels program that I keep hearing about?

Pick up a copy of Microsoft Office 2008 here for about $159. It will run fine on any mac without parallels or other virtual PC apps. (http://www.academicsuperstore.com/product/search?qk_srch=office+2008&x=0&y=0)
Though I have never used 2008 version of Office for Mac, I used the 2003 version for years and it was absolutely rock solid. I assume new one is too. If you wait until you receive your .edu email address you'll be eligible for the discount at this site.
From what you've written you probably don't need parallels. If you decide you need a virtual PC for other PC needs, check out vmware Fusion too.

    Parallels 7 is supported but you must update Parallels to the most recent version

  • Virus help needed:  Parallels:  Windows XP virtual machine

    I will preface my remarks by apologizing in advance for my lack of technical sophistication, inexperience with Windows, and experimental approach to providing tech support to myself. It just happens to be the case that I have infrequently needed to use computers in my work life, aside from operating cash registers equipped with POS systems; and have used Macs at home for my entire life as a computer user. (I only started using the internet about nine years ago, although I am 44 years old.)
    Here is the background of my situation:
    In Winter 2008, in anticipation of training for and entering into a new line of work, I purchased a MacBook3,1. Because the new line of work would regularly require me to use Windows-based applications, I purchased Parallels 3.0 at the same time that I purchased the MacBook.
    I installed Parallels 3.0 from a disk, installed Windows XP, and set up a virtual machine. I used this VM for more than a year and a half without incident. A one-year certificate for Kapersky Internet Security was included with the purchase of Parallels. In the meantime, I upgraded to Parallels 4.0 in Winter 2009. The upgrade was accomplished via download, using the product key that I'd purchased.
    At some point, my Kapersky certificate expired. I was unclear (though I am no longer) as to whether running Windows on Mac was any different - - i.e. more secure -- than running it on Mac. I made a mental note to look into the whole matter and avoided using the internet while working in the Windows VM.
    At some point, however, I lapsed in my practice of avoiding using the internet while working in the Windows VM. I ended up with a virus, of course.
    That said, I had (and have) a back-up of what I believe to be a pre-virus Windows VM. I used this back-up to add/create a new VM. I was prompted to back up the back-up before so doing; and was also prompted to update the new machine to Parallels 4.0. Which I did. The update to Parallels 4.0 took a long time.
    In the interim, I had moved some working files from the infected VM (which themselves were infected, judging from all indications) into the Mac OS for temporary storage.
    My memory of what I did and what happened next is imperfect. But here it is in gist and to the best of my recollection:
    When I booted the new machine, I received a message to the effect that I should install Kapersky Internet Security -- although the certificate I'd purchased along with Parallels 3.0 had ostensibly expired. I installed Kapersky. Then I received a message that I needed to update Kapersky. Which I did. This, too, took a long time.
    I then cloned the new machine.
    I then rebooted the new machine and moved the infected files into it. I scanned the infected files for viruses and nothing showed. Then I opened one or more of them to see if things were operating satisfactorily. The virus, I soon discovered, was present in the new machine. At some point I also received a message to the effect that the Kapersky software itself had been altered? And subsequently received a message prompting me to accept or not accept a rule relevant to internet security/Kapersky. (I forget exactly what I did in response.)
    I then booted the clone -- into which I had NOT moved the infected files. The virus eventually showed up there as well. I also received a message to the effect that Kapersky may not be up to date -- even though the VM was a clone of a machine that was ostensibly recently updated. AND I received the same massage prompting me to accept or not accept a rule relevant to internet security/Kapersky. Which I ignored.
    I have since deleted the new machine and its clone. I have backed up onto CD my infected work files in case I may learn in the future of some way of disinfecting them.
    What do I do from here? I am interning in my new line of work, and need to get Windows up and running ASAP for that reason. I still have the back-up of what I believe to be a pre-virus Windows XP VM.
    Sorry to be so broad and so vague.
    Thanks for any feedback.

  • Satellite M60: Need parallel port to connect Iomega Zip drive

    Hi guys,
    I have a Satellite M60 and I want to transfer some files from my Iomega Zip drive .
    My notebook does not has a paraller port, so I bought a converter in order to make it work but there was no result.
    Does anyone of you knows how to resolve the problem and finaly attach my ZIP driver to my Satellite in order to transfer the files?
    Do I need another converter?
    If yes, then which one? Or, do I have to buy a PCI card with a paraller port?
    Any answer will be appraciated
    thanx

    Hi
    I never used an USB-to-parallel converter but an USB-to-serial port converter and I made very bad experience witch such parts.
    As far as I know such adapters dont work properly.
    Therefore your suggestion is not bad to use the PCMCIA card with a parallel port.
    Check firstly in your user manual which cards are compatible and then you could try to use such card.
    I think this would be the best solution to connect your Iomega Zip drive to the M60 notebook.

    What was unclear in 'multipe disks'?
    If all of those parallel query slaves are going to hit 1 single disk, you will get an IO bottleneck.
    And performance problems are typically NOT resolved by enabling parallel execution.
    It is not unlikely it will make things worse.
    I was afraid you are a fan of silver bullets. It appears indeed you are.

  • H55M-E33 need parallel port port connector

    I misplaced/lost the parallel port thing to connect the motherboard 25 pin header to a slot with db25 parallel port connector and am trying to replace it.
    Can I buy this from MSI?  If not, where can I buy it and what do I ask for to get the right adapter?  I have one from an older computer, but the header that goes to the motherboard isn't the right size, it's larger.

  • I need Parallel advice, will I be able to...

    I just bought a iMAC and want to use Parallel to load Windows Vista next month. Will I be able to:
    1-Transfer data from my old PC to Windows on the Mac using transfer s/w such as Laplink or Intellimover?
    2-Will the OS and Vista both recognize the same USB connected printer.
    3-Will I be able to fax from WinFax s/w using the MAC ext modem.
    4- Any other things I should look out for.
    I keep reading that Parallel has some interface problem and I'm trying to plan ahead.
    iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    not sure about 1. 2 or3 but I had problems installing XP on Parallels
    I would purchase it online the version I bought at the Mac store was the wrong
    build, even though it said for Intel based Mac's on the box. I emailed Parallels
    and they set me a link to the correct build and everything is fine now.

  • Boot Camp - Parallels - Windows 7 - 32bit - 64bit

    Hi. First off, and not looking for sympathy - just a little background of myself: I have recently recovered from two bouts of high dose chemo and a stem cell transplant. My memory and brain...processing speed, for lack of correct word or two, is no where near what it used to be. I need things to be explained just a tad bit more thorough.
    I have an iMac 27" 3.4GHz i7 - 8GB Ram - 2GB Radeon HD 6970 - 1TB HD and use FCPX for a lot of editing. I will, in the near future, need to use some Windows programming/software. Ok, now my questions:
    1)  Do I even need Parallels 7, which I just bought today, to use Windows 7 or is Boot Camp the way to go? (And I can get my $50      back.)
    2)  I have Norton's via COMCAST. I never assume, so, will I need to load my own Norton's with Windows 7 or will COMCAST           internet connection, using Norton's, be acceptable protection?
    3)  ...I forgot...
    Thank you in advance for your assistance!
    Jason

    1.) Depends on your usage of Windows and on the programs you want use with Windows.
    BootCamp is the better solution for hardware-demanding Windows programs in the field of gaming and/or §d-rendering/movie-editing since it uses the native (real) hardware of your Mac.
    Downfall of BootCamp is that you have to reboot your Mac to switch from OSX to Windows and back.
    Parallels biggest asset is the ability to run Windows alongside OSX. Downfall is that hatdware-demanding programs are running slower.
    2.) I am not familiar with the Comcast Norton, but when running Windows you must have a decent Anti-Virus solution for it.
    3.) when it comes back, ask...
    Get well soon

  • Parallel currency in company code require material ledger activation

    Hello,
    I have a requirement where the company is using parallel currency in NEWGL concept with two different currencies INR and USD.
    I want to have a clarification whether I Need to activate Material ledger with parallel currency.
    1. Company is using parallel currency with only one legal valuation view.
    2. There is no requirement for product costing in the company.
    Can the balance in general ledger can be seen in both currency for inventory balances.
    Awaiting for your inputs
    Thanks

    If you don't need parallel currency at present, there's no need to configure it. Why should that be a problem, as long as your Business needs are not relevant to using a parallel currency?
    I suspect your actual query is details regarding the future problems that you might face when, faced by changed Business scenarios, you are forced to introduce parallel currency at a future date
    If my suspicion is correct, I suggest you look at SAP Note 39919. It's an old note - but one that I've found contains quite relevant tips and tricks about introducing parallel currency in a productive environment.

  • Installing Snow Leopard but also Boot Camp or Parallels

    I have a 2006 MacBook (Intel, core duo) and have a 320 gb HD, 2 gb RAM, running 10.5.8.
    I'd like to install Snow Leopard but also would like to partition my HD and install Boot Camp (or Parallels 4.x - I have that version, fully paid etc. but not version 5 of Parallels. Or should I move to Parallels 5 if I move to Snow Leopard?)
    I have a full bootable backup (2) on FW400 LaCie External HD's. I have the SL Original DVD.
    What is the best way to do this? At present I have 60 gb free space (about 20% of the 297 gb formatted total space available).
    Thanks for any comments! Oh, yes - I'm anticipating a new MacBook Pro 13" any time now (Thought the new ones would be out by now!) - Well it will come with SL installed; and I will order one with a 500 gb HD (or larger if available then). Can I migrate my current MB data and files to the new MacBook using migration assistant? But what if I want a partition for BootCamp and Windows (XP likely as I have that)--? Should I partition the new MBP HD first (can I partition it without erasing everything?
    Best regards,

    Frankly, were you to run Parallels 5 you should have more RAM installed, but your model cannot support more than the 2 GBs you have installed now. You would be better off running Windows via Boot Camp on that machine. However, the new computer will have 4 GBs of RAM installed so it is better suited to running Windows via Parallels. And, yes, if you run Snow Leopard you need Parallels 5.x both for compatibility and performance reasons.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the wide button on the left to print out the documentation. Read it carefully before using Boot Camp Assistant. Yes, you partition the drive without erasing it, but you can only have one Windows and one OS X partition on the same drive. Otherwise it makes no difference when you use Boot Camp.
    Your XP must be a retail installer with SP2 and only the 32-bit version. You cannot use an OEM installer that came with another computer.

  • Parallel process with a queue and file?

    Hello, first of all sorry for my bad english^^:
    I am working for days on my project where I have to show the parallel process while transfering information by different ways and their problems (like timing and so on).
    I chose the transmission of information to a parallel process by (1) a queue, and by (2) a file (.txt). (other ways are welcome, do you have 1-2 other ideas?)
    To solve this problem I made three while loops, the first one is the original one, where the original information (as a signal) is created and send by queue and file to the other two while loops, where this information is getting evaluted to create the same signal.
    so in the end you can compare all signals, if they are the same - so that you can answer the question with the parallelity of process.
    but in my vi file i have some problems:
    the version with the queue works pretty fine - it's almost parallel
    but the version with file doesn't work parallel, and i have no idea how i can solve it - -
    i'm a newbie^^
    can someone correct my file, so both (file and queue version) run parallel with the original one, or tell me what i can or must do?

    A queue is technically never parallell, though you can have several if you really need parallellism. Other methods include Events, Action Engines, Notifiers (and why not webservices) for information transfer between processes.
    Due to limitations in the disk system you can only read/write one file at a time from one process, so i wouldn't recommend that. If you use a ramdisk it might work.

  • What is needed to merge with windows

    I am interested in using windows vista with my mac and have been told you need "parallels" and the vista program. Has anyone done this and is it successful?

    It was kind of you to respond to my question. I should have been more specific but the intent was to draw more than a "yes". The subject refers to windows compatibility and since I am using a macbook pro my post will remain within the various apple discussions.

  • Need USB to RS232 and USB to LPT adapters

    Hi, My Toshiba Satellite A100 has only 4 USB ports. I need parallel (LPT) and serial (COM) ports. How to solve this problem? I have adapters USB to LPT and USB to COM, wich work on my desktop, but they not work on notebook. Thank in advance.

    I have read on some sites that not all USB adapters work properly.
    You should firstly google around for more informations about such adapters.
    If you are sure that it will work so you can buy it.
    Anyway, the PCMCIA is a good solution

  • Parallel Flow in BPEL not working.

    We are using 10.1.3.4.We have a designed a process in bpel where we have parallel flows .Each flow has an invoke activity that calls an external service.
    Each partnerlink has property "nonBlockingInvoke" specified.
    We have also added the property in bpel.xml as below:
    <configurations>
    <property name="inMemoryOptimization">true</property>
    <property name="completionPersistPolicy">faulted</property>
    <property name="completionPersistLevel">All</property>
    </configurations>
    Now after adding the above property along with property "nonBlockingInvoke" specified for each partnerlink we are getting a timeout error.
    once I remove the configuration property it works .Even if we remove the nonBlockingInvoke property then it works.But unfortunately as per our requirement we need parallel processing and inMemory optimisation both.
    Any help on this regards will be highly appreciated.
    my bpel.xml
    <?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'UTF-8'?>
    <BPELSuitcase>
    <BPELProcess id="SyncParallelFlow" src="SyncParallelFlow.bpel">
    <partnerLinkBindings>
    <partnerLinkBinding name="client">
    <property name="wsdlLocation">SyncParallelFlow.wsdl</property>
    </partnerLinkBinding>
    <partnerLinkBinding name="BPELTest1">
    <property name="wsdlLocation">BPELTest1Ref.wsdl</property>
    <property name="nonBlockingInvoke">true</property>
    </partnerLinkBinding>
    <partnerLinkBinding name="BPELTest2">
    <property name="wsdlLocation">BPELTest2Ref.wsdl</property>
    <property name="nonBlockingInvoke">true</property>
    </partnerLinkBinding>
    </partnerLinkBindings>
    <configurations>
    <property name="inMemoryOptimization">true</property>
    <property name="completionPersistPolicy">faulted</property>
    <property name="completionPersistLevel">All</property>
    </configurations>
    </BPELProcess>
    </BPELSuitcase>

    Well, remember inMemoryOptimization works only for Synchronous-Transient (Without any dehydration in between) processes.
    When you set nonBlockingInvoke=true, then each invoke happens in a seperate thread/transaction, which forces dehydration in the process.
    That's the reason in your case it's not working.
    Hope this explains.
