Do I need Push?

I think about buying a Blackberry Curve 3G. I have a mobile subscription with 3G internet (no push).
Do I need push for the facebook app, twitter app and email app? Because when I get the Curve 3G I want to use those apps.
Thanks
Machiel
Edit: I just saw i posted this in  BlackBerry Curve - BlackBerry 8300 Series Smartphone and not in the Curve 3G section, sorry!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Things can vary widely by carrier, but in general I'd say "yes". What I suggest you do is to research the services you desire and then talk to your carrier about the appropriate data plan from them to enable those services. A general guideline is available in this FAQ:

Good luck!

  • Dell Vostro 430, needs pushing power button multiple times before powering up

    Hi
I had to push the power button twice for the system to power up for a long time now. For the last month or so, I need to push the power button up to 20 times for the system to start. Is this an issue with the power unit of the system and does anyone a solutions for this.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Does this happen after leaving the system off all night or every time you start the machine?
If it happens all the time, the power button assembly might have malfunctioned and will need to be replaced. When was the system purchased? You can try the following steps and check if it makes any difference
    Remove power cable
Hold down power button for 10 seconds
Plug back cable and try starting system.
Revert with an update and we can look at further options.

  • Does "Find my phone" need Push?

I just tried "Find my phone" and it works fine but it appears that it will only work if Push is turned on. I don't use Push to save battery life. Does anyone know for sure if Push is required?
    gbs

Ok, played with it a little bit more. I was able to figure out that if I went to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Fetch New Data>Advanced and set my Contacts, Calendars to Manual and Mail to Fetch and then went back and set Fetch to Hourly in the previous menu and shut off Push I could still locate my phone. I'll have to keep checking to see if this really continues to work or not but maybe it will conserve battery life a little more.

  • How to create array of push button 288 ch in the PXI 6509 (3pcs)

& I have make a code (in the attach).
but some time appear like a bug if we push one button after push all button. but some time is ok.
    Please correct the code.
    Many thanks..

It seems to work okay for me.  What do you mean by "sometimes appear like a bug"?  How is it not behaving like you want.
    Some recommendations:
    1.  There is no logical reason for the feedback node on some of your error wires.
    2.  You might want to turn some of your groups of buttons into a cluster.  That way you can work on the value change of a cluster and not have to set up 100's of value changes for the individual controls.  You would also be abe to easily use cluster to array to turn your cluster of booleans into array of booleans rather than building arrays by manually wiring up 100's of controls.

  • Best Push email software for the 5800

Just thought I would pop this up as I have been trying out a lot of Push email products recently and finally think I have found one I like for the 5800!
I am currently using System Seven and it does almost everything I need - push email - with the option to view compatible emails in html.
My only issue with it is the fact you cant set HTML as standard and it doesnt have a clickable notification on the homescreen. (minor issues)
I have tried others like Emoze (works well and has a notification but the HTML emails done allow you to scroll and the scrolling is very tempremental in normal view.)
Mail for exchange doesn't have html although is now available for services such as Gmail etc...
Anyone got any better solutions or anything to add to this thread let me know.

I dunno, there aren't really any screen shots or concrete descriptions on the Evernote site, and I've never used it, but from looking at a video on their site, I'm not sure it would qualify for creating organizational charts. If Fred is looking for something that creates stuff like flow charts and the like, he may have better luck with OmniGraffle. Whether this is available on the Mac App Store, I don't know... but if not, don't bother with the Mac App Store and just download from the web site:

  • C6-00. PUSH EMAIL not working and Nokia Messaging ...

Nokia Messaging doesn't delete / expunge with IMAPand PUSH EMAIL not working.. C6-00

I had a bad experience with my gmail account. It was really slow. 15min looks to work but it won´t make it faster as push email is not supported by gmail when using nokia devices ( I have read it somewhere on a gmail mobile compatibility chart at google help pages)
I have created an ovi mail account and it works as push email on my c6 00 (latest firmware). I have setup gmail to send a copy of all the incoming emails to my ovi account, so I have instant feedback at my phone of incoming mails.
The bad news of this workaround is that when I reply i´m doing it from my ovi account where y erase the mails after reading as I have the original mail at gmail.
I hope this helps someone that needs push+gmail.

  • Push or no push-battery life

ok this will probably sound dumb considering i used to work at AT&T and did alot of the email set ups on blackberrys and other smart phones....but...on my 3gs there is an option to turn push on or off...but i thought that when you have gmail set up on these phones that it pulls the emails at specified times...so why would i need push turned off? i guess basically id just like to know the difference between having it on or off and if that effects battery life...becuase as of right now with just texting all day...rarely talking on the phone...using yahoo some...and the internet a little bit...im running out of battery before the day is over and having to plug it into my computer at work...its very frustrating...any ideas would be nice...i know that there are tons of posts on here but i figured id ask...thanks in advance

    I notice this issue.
My phone is using Gmail Push. When I see I have emails, I open the email application and notice as soon as I open it, the phone checks for emails. When I go to look in other folders that are sync'ed it checks too. Since my phone is in manual, it should not check at all, it should only pull down emails when notified.
I realize that the phone is scoring better in battery life than other 3G phones, but it could be better when reading emails. I am sure the screen display has a little to do with it too, but it should not check for emails when in push mode. This is why the BB does such a better job with battery life.

  • Push Notification Errors

    Hi All...
New SLS setup in use right now.  After taking it online, I noticed a number of errors in the System log from the push_notify service:
    May 11 10:56:17 xserve push_notify[65469]: error: <iq id='11010' to='[email protected]/push_notify' type='error' from='pubsub.server.domain.com' xmlns='jabber:client'><error type='cancel' code='404'><item-not-found xmlns='urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-stanzas'/></error><pubsub xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/pubsub'><publish node='/Public/IMAP/server.domain.com/portnum/Mailbox/8EF7DC85-63EA-4302-B4EA-A9 996E815C89'><item><plistfrag xmlns='plist-apple'/></item></publish></pubsub></iq>

We have Push notifications set up for both iCal and Mail, neither seem to be working.  But I'm also not sure what I should "see" as a result of the push.  Is it like mail, where you just get a red number on the icon in the dock?  On iPhones, should you get a banner message (like Facebook does)?
I've researched this error and while a number of people posted questions on it last fall, there weren't many solutions and nothing reported recently.
    Thanks in advance!
    Kevin

Mac OS X Client boxes can support push notifications from Mac OS X Server boxes.  See the IDLE setting in the Apple Mail.app client, for instance.
Mail has never been an instantaneous transport, but then I'm old enough to have routed mail via decvax and many other gateways.
Push notifications do help reduce client battery usage as compared with too-frequent polling intervals, but (in the absence of iOS-compatible push support) immediate end-user notifications can probably better be handled via SMS or telephone.  And how long the message takes to reach the target server is not particularly predictable, so it's only the last hop of the message and the notification (from the server to the client) that push particularly helps with.
Put another way, if a battery-constrained client polling interval of less than (say) 15 minutes is business-critical (and there are cases where it is), then you may want to look at ensuring a sufficient battery reserve for the client, at a different mail server and particularly one with push capabilities (eg: Kerio), or at a using different notification technology (eg: SMS, phone pages).
Power-unconstrained (grid-powered) mail clients can poll at more frequent intervals.
If 15 or 30 minutes on a mobile client isn't critical, then you probably don't need push notifications.
Here is some general reading on push notifications.

  • Possible work-around for v3.0 short battery life

First: be aware there's a difference between "Push" (which is for some email account types & some MobileMe features) and "Push Notifications" (which is for apps). They are controlled in separate Settings screens.
    Short story:
If you've upgraded to v3.0, usually have Wifi ON, and experiencing short battery life, and if you can live without Push Notifications (at least until Apple finds a better solution), TRY TURNING "Push Notifications" OFF.
Alternatively, if you can live without Wifi but need Push Notifications, try turning Wifi off & let the data travel via 3G.
    Long story:
First I ran alternate days with Wifi ON, then Wifi OFF, and noticed with Wifi OFF my battery life was nowhere near as short (I could get through a day), but with Wifi ON, I can barely get through half a day. This is very different to v2.21, and in my setup the only significant difference was Push Notifications being ON.
Then today I've been running continuous pings from my Mac to my iPhone, with various combinations of Push on/off, Push Notifications on/off, email accounts on push / fetch / manual, and discovered there's a huge difference in how often Wifi gets turned on when Push Notifications is enabled.
With Push Notifications ON, while your iPhone 3G (and probably 3GS) is asleep, Wifi will be turned on for 15-20seconds every 1 to 2 minutes!
This is in stark contrast to Push Notifications OFF, but Push (for email, MobileMe, etc) ON, where Wifi is on only as often as your email account settings dictate.
This explains a lot, I think. With Wifi OFF, data goes through the 2G/3G radio, which is inherently ON all the time (for phone functionality), so the incremental 'cost' (to battery life) of Push Notifications is comparatively small.
But with Wifi enabled, data is instead sent via Wifi. The incremental cost (to battery life) is dramatically higher having to turn on the Wifi radio, find the WLAN, get an IP from DHCP, then exchange data with various Internet servers, when it happens every couple of minutes!
Though I'm not really sure what Apple can do about this situation. They appear to be turning Wifi on frequently to give the illusion of true (ie timely) push notifications. I think this situation runs parallel to those who found, with v2.x, that enabling Push on email accounts & Wifi enabled had similar major negative impact on battery life. Except now heaps more people want the Push Notification feature. Interesting conundrum...

The main thing that helped me with the short battery life was lowering the brightness. My 3G was so bright I could'nt sleep at night.

  • Syncing iPad iPhone iMac with Google Calendar, everything you want to know

Ok Guys, I just spent the last 4 hours going nuts with experimentations, trials and errors, and I finally think I figured it out, so bear with me here because it's not that simple. And excuse me for the poor english, I'm from Brazil.
Ok, in the iMac you're gonna set up a CalDAV account with your google login/password. It will work flawlessly and you won't have any problems, it will always update the google calendar and be updated by it. Just remember to use CMD+R to refresh it whenever you want, so you don't have to wait the 15 minutes or whatever you set in preferences.
Now let's talk iPad and iPhone. First of all, you have 2 options to sync calendars with Google, you can use protocol CalDAV or protocol Exchange.
Google's setup instructions for CalDAV (both iPhone and iPad) is here: http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?answer=151674
The instructions for both iPhone and iPad for Exchange is here:
    http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740
(just be sure to select calendar only, cause I'm assuming you're using IMAP or other protocol for mail and contacts).
The main difference between CalDAV and Exchange is that Exchange supports push updates, wich is instant, while with CalDAV you have to fetch manually (every time you open the calendar app) or another time setting (like 15 min, one hour, etc).
Well, my experiences revealed that the iPhone and the iPad will sync flawlessly with Google Calendar and the iMac, without any problems, BUT as long as you use Exchange AND Push to update the calendars (CalDAV doesn't support Push, and you need Push so the iPad sync works).
Let me repeat that: IF and ONLY IF you have BOTH Exchange protocol configured and PUSH enabled iPad and iPhone will sync flawlessly. But many people (me included) dont want to use push because a) it has a battery hit b) they don't need instant updates c) it consumes cellular data when you're not on Wifi, and if you don't have an unlimited plan that's not good.
So, if you TURN OFF PUSH with Exchange sync, the iPad will stop syncing properly. Curiously, the iPhone will continue syncing properly.
What I discovered is that, on the iPad, doesn't matter if you use CalDAV or Exchange, the moment you turn OFF push notifications it won't sync manually anymore. And by that I mean that with push off the iPad will not refresh calendar data when you open the calendar app (as it should since push is off and manual fetch is selected).
To sum it up, I discovred that with push OFF in both the iPad and the iPhone (either with Exchange or CalDAV):
    - The iPhone will update both google calendar and the iMac;
    - The iphone will be updated by both google calendar and the iMac and events created in the iPad;
    - The iPad will NOT be updated when you open the calendar app, so it won't see any changes made either on the iPhone, iPad or Google Calendar, but when you create new events in the iPad you will see the data icon spinning so it will send that event to the other 3, but it will not recieve anything.
On macrumors forum people discovered that on the iPad, if you open your calendar, close it, change settings from manually fetch to 15 minutes or whatever, it will sync the next time you open your calendar. But it's unreliable (doesn't work every time), not to mention that you won't want to do that every time you need to sync your calendar !
What about the iPhone ? Well, in my experiences I found out that it doesn't matter if you use Exchange OR CalDAV, it will manually sync with push off every time you open the calendar app. Just a sidenote: the iPhone wasn't manually refreshing with push off as well, just like the iPad, but as soon as I rebooted it started to sync manually every single time and it has been so far. But the iPad didn't sync manually every time even after I rebooted it.
To end it all, how to know if the calendar is manually syncing with Push OFF ? Well, just open the calendar app and after 5 seconds you should see the data spinning logo right next to the 3G or Wifi icon in the status bar. It must happen EVERY time you open the calendar app (you don't even need to force quit the calendar app for it to happen, it must happen every time you hit home and then open the calendar again). If it's not spinning (recieving data) 5 seconds after you opened the calendar app, it's not manually syncing, so on the iPhone you should reboot and on the iPad there's no fix I found so far (besides the unreliable fix of chaning the fetch time like I said before).
Oh, I did all these tests with an iPhone 3GS running iOS4 (don't complain it's not 4.2.1, cause the iPhone IS working, the problem is with the iPad), and an iPad running 4.2.1.
I just hope this thread gets attention because It almost drove me nuts to figure out all these things.
    Cheers,
    Felipe Raul

An update: I am seeing the CalDAV account sync more frequently than the 15 minute interval I have Fetch set to, sometimes as soon as 5-6 minutes. This is however going in/out of the calendar app multiple times... Every once in a which it will update.
I've found no pattern as to what triggers the sync. It doesn't seem to matter if I go into another app or not, or whether I close out the calendar app from the task menu. It's just totally random.
You might say, "what's wrong with just letting it fetch every 15 minutes as it is schedule to do?" Well, most of the time this would be ok, but there are occasionally moments when a decision must be made and an up-to-the-minute current accurate calendar is required for this to happen.
At this point, I'm going to have to keep my priority/vital calendars syncing via Exchange/push, and use CalDAV/push for the less vital calendars and at least have control over calendar colors with those.
Also, just wanted to mention that all the above testing has been over a stable wifi connection, rather than 3G or Edge, in case it makes a difference. (I don't think it does.)

  • WHY SUCH AN INJUSTICE THAT BBM CANNOT BE USED ON MY CURVE 9300 OVER NORMAL DATA SERVICE AND OTHER PLATFORMS CAN USE!

    Hello,
I am using Blackberry Curve 9300. I purchased this phone for Rs. 17,250 before some 3 years, I considered RIM to be a Company providing premium services which is unique in itself and which worth spending on them and the most important thing is those are not available to non-blackberry users! Especially in case of Blackberry Messenger, which is such a service connecting all the blackberry users around the world, making a mark of precious symbol of the users of BBM.
Before few days I came to know about BBM being available on Android and Windows phones, my question is why this injustice with your own customers, you provide the app which they will use with their normal data plan and we people who are your real customers, who trusted in you have to spend not less than Rs.129 for just BBM!I must say RIM is the most back-stabbing company I have had ever dealt with! People are laughing at us as they are using the same service for almost free and we have to spend a huge sum for availing the same service, my question is are these non blackberry people your customers or we people who contributed in your success with hopes of trust?
My question is not why you made available BBM usage to non-blackberry users with such flexibility but my question is why can't you be loyal to your own customers?
I hope that RIM would have a pleasing justification.

Thanks with the signature but I already removed it from my profile too.
I was never under a rock when it comes to technology I know that in India before few months yoru Blackberry Z10 was Rs.44,000 and now it is Rs.21,000. I understand the ploy of making BBM cross platform to generate revenue, first in a technical sense and another by creating it advrtisement in the marker.
Do you think that taking an undue advantage of our loyaty and enduring the mockery of your own customer would take you anywhere? Don't you think that abusing your own customer's prestige would even affect you negatively? While your customer is paying Rs.129 for just BBM the Android person sitting next to him is lauging at him for he paid you and call him fool! Profits doesn't starts only by making huge business decisions but from the loyal and satisfied customers. You may always find customers all around always complaining but deep down if you have touched their needs they will bless you with good words at your back, maybe in such a way that you will never come to kow but it will grow you more. I am not here to deliver you a marketing lecture as i am in corporate law field but let me tell you what I read during my graduation, it said something like one disatisfied customer can discourage ten potential customers from buying your product and I have started feeling the same in case of online shopping but I do not know when the company giant blackberry would come to know!
When you said about expanding customer base, think about a company who is expanding its base of customers by disatisfing their current customers who always took pride in you by providing them services at harsh terms and in front of their eyes others are getting benefits at a very low cost.
Our family business is textile manufacturing, not as big as blackberry but we always knew that if we will start selling our goods by describing them as really premium goods and start charging out of lips and bounds, of course my product could be premium worth the price but one thing I could be missing would be a point of finance, there could be cheaper alternatives in market which could be selling at lower price which same usage. My concern is just to keep our eyes open.
Now consider a phone on which I can use Whatsapp which satisfies my messaging needs, gtalk and yahoo messengers for my im needs, push mails for emails, browsing and downloading for just Rs.99 and on the other hand Blackberry services for Rs.389, it is indeed clear the reason of downfall, though it is labelled as premium service and indeed it could be, permium service as I said earlier.
When you feel that your boat is sinking, you do not have only have to pull out the waters but on the priority basis you have to cover the hole too! Blackberry is just pulling out the water leaving the hole as it is!
If you say that legacy mode in BBOS could bother you  from providing BBM for BB device, you know that it cannot be and even I know that, any technical person can know that as it is a little secret that I can use BB browser without BIS and many other apps are example of the same (to be a bit informal). See, I never asked this thing from last three years but now when you are making it cross platform why not to give a little benefits to those who paid you till now, if you can give it to those who are nothign to you?
My question is that why can't you provide BBM to be used on the normal data paln for your own old and loyal customers who paid you such a handsome amount from many years for your services as how you provide on other platform, just for BBM not email and rest of your services?

  • HT3576 How do you fix the problem that happens when if I open my notification for an app, it disappears on the Notification Center?

I was updating an app on my iPad (seeds pro), and when it was fully updated, I opened it. I tried to use a feature on it, but it said I need push notifications enabled. I was looking around in the notification part of the settings app, and when I go back to the specified app, it still didn't let me use the feature. But the additional thing is that now, when I open a notification for ANY app, or at least open the app, it disappears from the Notification Center. I really need help in fixing this bug or problem or whatever it is.

It didn't work like that before. And I know it wasn't a new feature in the iOS7 update, I've never had my notifications deleted from the Notification Center until a week ago. Before that, I kept my notifications in the Notification Center.

  • IPhone 3G doesn't sync with Outlook calendar using Exchange

First, let me just say I don't need push email, push contacts or push calendar. I just want my iPhone to sync with my existing Outlook 2007 setup like any other PDA would via ActiveSync, without having to rely on iPhone Enterprise Integration.
There are lots of articles in the knowledge-base and forum that describe how to overcome corruption of PST files, but if you're connecting to an Exchange server you'll notice that you might not even have a PST file. Outlook uses OST files for off-line cache instead and creating a PST as your default storage will cause all of the Exchange content to be delivered to your computer and erased from the server. (not good)
I've looked over all the support articles I could find, tried innumerable variations of install / re-install / disable Outlook plug-ins / start with brand new user attempts to no avail. I still have not found a way around this issue.
I know this is possible because my previous phone (a Treo700w) was able to sync contacts and my calendar without any issues and I naturally expected my iPhone to have *at least* the same capabilities.
Feels like a major design flaw for business users. Now I'm stuck with a super slick phone that doesn't do the number 1 thing I need it to do: sync with my Outlook calendar. Sorry for the rant.
Anyone else having an issue with this? As far as I can tell there's no solution posted for it.

MeatX2, I had read that article already. It describes how to overcome corrupt PST files which doesn't apply in my case.
My primary Outlook file is an OST (off-line cache) and my contacts / calendar are stored on an Exchange server. I could create a PST file and set it as the default storage, but that would cause all of my data to be delivered directly to my Outlook and erased from the server (where it is currently backed up and available from multiple computers, my desktop, laptop, etc).
Doesn't seem like Apple has a solution for syncing from OST files like other PDAs do. The only alternative seems to be their Enterprise Integration product which (despite doing cool things like push email, contacts and calendar) isn't something an end-user can install.
I just need iTunes to sync with my Outlook in the same way my old PDA did. Seems a little absurd that Apple would pitch Outlook sync capabilities and miss such a significant use-case completely.
But thanks for the reply anyway...

    - between mobile lync client and lync desktop client: The IM function is working sent between both party, no matter it is initial send from mobile or desktop client, but after a random period of time, may be 5 mins or 7 mins or 10 mins, the desktop client
will not able to send IM to the mobile client but the mobile client still able to send IM to desktop client.
    - for between lync mobile client
    the issue as above.
    - between desktop lync client
    no such issue found
I've trouble shoot this issue a lot but still can't the root cause?
    Do you have any idea?
    Many thanks for your help?
I know that when I testing using my mobile phone, my 3G network provider will continuous change my mobile ip address after a period time, does this behaviour will affect Lync server to find the mobile device?
are there any method will Lync server know what the mobile client status and ip address  that let Lync server can find the mobile device effectively?

    Hi,
Would you please tell us which edition of mobile did you use (Android, IOS or Windows Phone)?
As IPhone and Windows Phone need push notification function but Android Phone doesn’t need.
If possible, you can test with two Android Phone to check if the issue happen with push notification function.
From your description above, it seems that you use 3G network on mobile to connect Lync mobile client. Please check if the issue cause by IP address of mobile, you can change network to a WIFI to have a test.
Also, please double check if the needed ports open as Edwin provided above.
