Do I need to be worried?  Is there a way to tell if I have a bad MacBook?

Hello all,
I just picked up a used MacBook Pro from a friend for $650. It is within the dates that there was the issues with the video chipsets from NIVIDIA. This notebook was not used that extensively, I don't think, so I am not sure if I am in the clear regarding this issue or not. Is there a way to tell if this MacBook is covered under he known issue even though it is beyond all coverage. It notes that if the issue appears within the 1st 4 years of purchase, it will be covered. Is this the best that they can do? Or can an apple guy run something on the system, or look up my S/N# and tell me if I have a notebook with the issue?
Reason I ask is to known whether I need to use this for the purpose I bought it for, or if I can rely on it as my main notebook as well.
Thanks for all, or any, help that someone on here can be. Love this notebook (and only had it for a few hours), but just wondering how much it can be trusted, or if there is a way to know.
Thanks you guys...hope I will be welcomed to the MAC club, as I have NEVER owned a MAC until now!

You won't be sure until the day you stop using it or it develops issues.

Correct. NVIDIA issue
Is this the best that they can do?
At this point, it is what it is. Anything beyond this would be at Apple's discretion, on a case-by-case basis.

You've already noted that your MBP falls within the range. It does have the GPU that may develop the issue. If the issue is occurring now, their test will show it. If the issue is not currently occurring, the test will not show it. The test tests whether or not the issue is occurring, it's not a predictor as to if/when it will occur. Some GPUs within that range will not develop the issue.
Reason I ask is to known whether I need to use this for the purpose I bought it for, or if I can rely on it as my main notebook as well.
I would feel comfortable using it as my main computer (I have a MBP that also falls in that range), but this computer or any other in the world could develop issues at any time. I backup frequently and in different ways and strongly recommend that you do, and everyone else does too. Every HD will die at some point in ongoing use. Some will take seconds, some years. Some will give notice, some not. Some will leave platters with recoverable data, some will have the platters gouged by failed heads, with little to no recovery possible. The only safe computing is by backing up data (and although I've never had to resort to it, having a second machine available; I keep most of my "old" Macs, so if my "main" machine would ever go down, I can just grab my data from a backup and keep going).
Thanks for all, or any, help that someone on here can be. Love this notebook (and only had it for a few hours), but just wondering how much it can be trusted, or if there is a way to know.
Heat is a big enemy of electronics. Monitor periodically with iStat Pro. Fans should speed up long before CPU hits thermal shutdown range of 100C.

Others have commented on this too.  It seems to be one of the 'improvements' of the newer version you are supposed to embrace with joy as an exciting new development.  You can send feedback to Apple but realize you may be perceived as standing in the path of  progress.

if you mean restore it to factory default then you can choose that while having it connected to the computer and using itunes

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Unfortunately, it's not possible to transfer ownership of music.
Ideally you should each have your own iCloud account, that way you can each manage your own mail, contacts, calendars, documents etc and avoid unintentional deletions and unwanted editing. If there is information you wish to share between you, this can be done with a secondary account.
Having separate iCloud accounts, doesn't mean you have to have separate iTunes accounts, so whilst you keep your personal data separate, you can continue to share music, apps, books, TV shows, movies etc.
However, you should also consider, she will likely want her own account one day and it may mean she leaves even more music behind if she waits.

Thank you so much! It's updating now. I'm hoping that once the update is finished that it will sync like normal as well. Of course I'm still a bit confused/concerned about how it refused to update on it's own, but for now that's not a problem. Hopefully from now on there won't be any more problems.

  • Is there a way to create an AUDIO alert when my MacBook Air (Mavericks) battery runs low (say 10%)?

Is there a way to create an AUDIO alert when my MacBook Air (Mavericks) battery runs low (say 10%)?  I often miss the visual power percentage in the top bar, so would like an audio alert as well.

    For global alerts, yes:
There is no need to do anything before the alert appears, and the MBA will not lose data should it go to sleep. If it goes to sleep at 0% you still have several hours to plug it in before it shuts down.
I wouldn't even bother displaying the percentage value.

  • Is there a way to import images that have been edited and assign them to the original?

I am transitioning to mac and aperture. Is there a way to import images that have been edited and assign them to the original? I have 10,000 originals and about 2,000 edited images. The originals are named img_XXXX and anything modified img_XXXX_modified. I would like to be able to import the originals and then import the edited versions and assign them to the original masters. Instead of starting from here and going forward with 12,000 masters, some of which are actual originals and others not. Thanks for the help.

Ah, the vestiges of a destructive workflow! Once you "get" Aperture, (specifically Masters and Versions) you are going to love it, as all of this work goes away - the relationship that you seek to retain is automatic in Aperture; it is simply done differently.
The short answer to your question is EVERY image file that is Imported into Aperture will create a new Master and one Version. Assuming that your images are PSD/TIFF/JPEG that you created in something like Photoshop, then each one that your import will be a new Master. You have many options:
-- Stick the originals in one Project(s) and the edited versions in another Project(s).
-- Stick them all in the same Project(s) and "Stack" them.
But here is the real question: Why are you doing all of this work and what are you trying to accomplish? Seems you are trying to preserve old things that don't need preserving in a non-destructive workflow.
So, what is most valuable to you?
-- The original, out of camera files? (That is, the fear/need to revert.)
-- The edited versions? (That is the hours of work that it took you to get there.)
If the former, import the originals and ignore the edited versions. (Either simply leave them out on disk or import them into their own Projects which you ignore.) Use Aperture to recreate the work you had done previously. This will always give you the ability to revert to the original Master and create as many Versions as you want. This is the best idea if your edits are relatively simple crops and exposure adjustments,
If the latter, then import the edited versions and do as above with the originals. This makes more sense if your work uses lots of layers and, perhaps lots of clone tool type corrections.
Of course, you can do a bit of both.
Others may have better suggestions, but you will find it easy to answer your own question when you understand an image based, as opposed to a file based, non-destructive workflow.
    Good luck!

Warp Stabilising is a two part process.
    Analysis and Stabilising.
Both have a banner across the Program Monitor during the process ( unless you have turned that off.
Analysis start automatically on forst application...but you can rock in there and start adjusting the parameters.
You may need to hit "Analyse" Button again.
You should see the number of frames and the estimated duration during this process.

  • Is there a way track who you have distributed the form to and who has responded? If yes, is there a way to message all that have not responded?

Is there a way track who you have distributed the form to and who has responded? If yes, is there a way to message all that have not responded? This would be a great way to manage supplier questionnaires to ensure everyone is providing information back to you.

FormsCentral, itself, does not have a method of distributing forms, so it would not know about your distribution list. It's either an open online form, which can be gotten to by anyone with the URL, or it's a pdf, which could be distributed via e-mail or a web page download.
You can always track the completion of the form by looking in the form's collected data set. Then, you could work backward to contact those recipients who have not yet responded. But that means you need to keep track of where the form was sent, or at least know which people/companies were supposed to get the form.
    I hope that helps,
    Brian

  • Wireless sync only works when I unlock phone. Is there a way to tell itunes my phones unlock code?

Wireless sync only works when I unlock phone. Is there a way to tell itunes my phones unlock code? Itunes tries to sync all night and posts 50 unknown errors. I unlock the phone and it syncs. I dont want my phone sitting around without a lock code but with wireless sync I cant find a place to tell itunes my code so it can sync? Any help is appreciated... Ray O

I have the same problem. I am forced to have a PIN set on my devices because I use my corporate exchange email and sync over wi-fi initially fails until I manually unlock the phone/ipad.  #ckuan needs to read the words wiritten.  We know how it's supposed to work but it won't start until you enter the PIN. Until then I get error messages saying either it cannot find the phone or explicitly telling me I need to unlock it.

If you have an iCloud account and Find My Device was enabled on the iPad, you could try to find it using the iCloud.com web site. Otherwise there is no way to find it.
You need to change all your online passwords immediately; notify the airport at which it went missing from your luggage (assuming it was at an airport); notify the police; notify your insurance company so you can get reimbursed and buy a new one; move on.

  • Is there a way to tell when an app was added to login items?

Is there a way to tell the exact date when an app was added to login items? (eg. through terminal or console?).
    TIA

No. Login items are created when you add an app through
     > System Prefs > Users & Groups | Login Items
and is a list specifically used for running and app on login to a particular users account (not boot in general). At least AFAIK, this has nothing to do with installing the app to the system.
I'm writing a bash diagnostic script which needs to call this info.

iTunes is a mess! It couldn't find it's own libraries and I was forced to create a new one. Now I don't know where my music is or if any's missing.

    How crap is that?
    It's not crap at all.
It's not that simple. For example, I've 3500 songs on my MacBook but don't want them all on my phone, so I have to manually select each song again???
There has to be a solution.
Why not simply make a playlist with the songs you want on the iPhone?
and maintain a current backup of your computer.
