Do I need to boot from OSX disk to repair permissions?

If the answer is no, how easy is it to copy Disk Utility to my hard drive?

Disk Utility should be on your Applications/Utilities folder. If it isn't, Pacifist can extract a file from an installer.

Booting from OSX disk 1,  goes as far as a blue screen with no icons or menu. Boot with D key for hardware test. Test ok.
At a loss what to do next.

Does Seem so, or the Internal Drive is so messed up it's interfering, try this...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

  • How to boot from rescue disk

    Hi,
I am running Macbook Pro, snow leopard 10.6.8
My resuce disk is based on 10.6.4
I tried to boot from rescue disk to repair the main disk.
I failed to boot from the rescue disk as my rescue disk (from CD) is not being recognized. I tried multiple options such as holding down  "C", "c", "option" key etc while the system is restarting. Only the main disk was being shown as the bootable option (while holding down the option key when restarting) but not the rescue disk.
I verified that my rescue disk is good. Infact, I could boot a Lion MacBookPro using my resue disk.
    Any inputs are appreciated.
    Thanks

It was 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard). It was the same as the rescue disk version.

  • Can't boot from OSX 10.6.3 retail disk

    Hi.
I have a macbook pro and want to boot from a retail osx 10.6.3 disk that I purchased. When I try to boot from the disk I hold C or option on startup I get the apple logo with no spinning gear. It hands here for hours. Nothing happens. I hear the disk begin to work and then it shuts down.
I want to boot from the disk and install an instance of OSX on my external hard drive. I do not have administrator access to the main OS, so booting is my only option for install. Do I HAVE to have the repair disk that came with the computer or can I use the retail copy I purchased?
    Thanks.

In a production environment we don't run around with the original media.
It would be nice to get a new retail release soon so I can throw it a few USB thumb drives and be able to do an install on the i5s, i7s and older core 2s. Anyone know when a newer retail DVD will be on sale?

  • Can't boot from OSX and may have a virus

I'm having a similar problem as Davo21 in "computer won't boot up in os x". After running Norton System Works to try to resolve an issue that I was having with my computer, I'm getting a message, "/etc/master.passwd:not a directory" on a black screen when I try to start up.
It started in early December after I downloaded some stuff off the internet and it seemed like I might have picked up a virus. I know, that's not supposed to happen with OSX, but my computer started doing wierd things like switching out icons for whole types of files - i.e., .wav files would show up with a totally different icon. Restarting solved that problem, but I noticed that on both my wife's and my computer (both Macs - hers a Single core Intel Mini running OSX 10.4 and mine a G3 700MHz running 10.3.9) the internet was running exceptionally slow, while on my work computer (a Dell PC running Windows XP) it was running just fine. All three computers are networked, so I surmised that something was affecting the Unix system but not the Windows, but when I ran Norton Anti-virus, it came up clean. More wierd things kept happening, so last week I decided to run Norton Disk Doctor and it changed thousands of directory settings and now my computer won't boot up from my main boot drive with OSX 10.3.9. I've run the Disk Utilities on the 10.3 Install Disk and I've run Disk Warrior and they both say that the boot drive is repaired, but I still get the same message when I try to start up normally.
I have several partitions on my original drive and several more on the additional 240GB hard drive that I installed a couple of years ago, so I can boot up from an old copy of OSX 10.2 on another partition. The latest wierd thing is that now one of my other partitions on the original hard drive won't mount.
    My questions are:
    1) How do I get back to being able to boot from OSX 10.3?
    2) Where can I get help to figure out what's going on with my computer and how to remedy it?
I've been looking at some of the information on the Leap-A malware and it seems like there are some similarities, however I'm running OSX 10.3.9 and not 10.4.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    G4 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    DMcSantaFe,
as was said before Norton Utilities and Disk Doctor were discontinued almost 3 years ago (for some very good reasons!). It caused much more trouble than it solved.
    Here are the articles:
Symantec discontinues Mac Norton Utilities, SystemWorks
    Norton Utilities, SystemWorks development halted

Tech Tool Pro and DiskWarrior are presently the most reliable utilities. For more information on regular housekeeping read this: MacOS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance
Unfortunately Norton usually damages the file system beyond repair. The only cure is a reinstall.

  • Can't boot from hard disk or from windows 7 recovery dvd

    I have a 970A-G46 motherboard.
I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd.
If I move the hard drive to another PC, it boots fine.
If I put the DVD in another PC's dvd drive, it can be accessed.
This machine will boot from an Ubuntu dvd and I can then access the HD directories and the recovery dvd.
What do I need to do?

  • New MacBook won't boot from external disk

I have a new MacBook that I am trying to boot from an external disk that had the system from my first gen MacBook Pro. When I restart holding the Option key, and select my external disk, the system restarts again and won't let me boot from that disk. Is there something different with the OS (10.5.6) that is installed on a newer MacBook that won't allow it to boot from the same OS from an older MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

    golferx,
Will any other Intel Mac boot from the drive? If not, it's possibly because the drive uses an Apple Partition Map (bootable for PowerPC Macs) instead of a GUID Partition Table (bootable for Intel Macs).
To check: open to Disk Utility, select the hard drive on the left, select the Partition tab and look at the text at the bottom right corner of the window under Partition Map Scheme. If it says anything other than GUID Partition Table, you will need to erase and repartition it as such before it will be bootable.
Just a thought. Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • G5 gets grey screen with logo then goes black, won't boot from any disk

Won't boot from any disk, already changed VRAM battery, no success. tried hardware disk once and ran a full scan, said error with Video, but now won't boot at all with any disk. Screen is choppy also(have pic). Thinking video graphics card? Not sure. Need help!

Hi bribiel, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It certainly sounds like the Video card from the little info we have, & that can certainly cause it to fail to bootup.

  • IMac 20" won't boot from AppleCare disk

    Hello all,
I have a new (1.5 weeks) iMac iSight 20" and am thrilled with its performance (it does not have any noticeable noise, nor does it have any dead pixels). I have tried to boot it from the AppleCare disk (the one with TechTool on it) but it will not boot. I have used that disk to install TechTool successfully on the iMac HD, but it will not boot from that disk. The iMac will boot from the OSX install disk that came with the iMac, and I have done so in order to run repair permissions before and after updates. Is there something easy I'm missing regarding booting from the Applecare disk? I'm not new to Macs, but I am new to iMacs and OSX. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello all,
Acting upon the advice I received here, I called AppleCare. Although it took 32 minutes, they did finally agree that the issue was with the AppleCare disk, and they are sending me a new one. I did note one interesting thing. I visited MicroMat's web page to see what the most current version is of TechTool Pro, and it is 3.0.4. That is the version on my current AppleCare disk. I guess the incompatability must be with something else on the disk. Thanks for all the prompt replies and great advice.

  • Satellite A200 - Cannot boot from Recovery disk - code 1

I have Vista business and my laptop is currently running slow and is full of rubbish.
I have in the past used my recovery disc to completely re-install vista and start from a fresh version.
However, i have tried this time and it says that it cannot boot from cd - code 1.
Can someone tell me what this is and how to re-install vista?

Hmm... so its definitely not a ODD issue but there is something wrong with the shipped CDs. From my knowledge this error would appear if the CD would NOT be bootable!
Its strange for me that this notebook has been preinstalled with the Vista business.
Usually the notebooks are preinstalled with Vista Home Premium and usually you have to create the own Recovery disk using the preinstalled tool called Toshiba recovery Disk Creator.
Anyway, if you are not able to boot from these disks then you would need other disks.
You could order it from the ASP in your country or from this page:

  • Booting from Installer Disk

    I have an issue with a 12" 867Mhz Powerbook G4.
It was showing the file/question mark icon on boot. Booting from a 10.4 retail DVD and running disk utility confirmed that the hard drive had died. I replaced the hard drive with a new 80GB IDE drive.
Next step is to install 10.4, but it will no longer boot from the disk. I turn it on holding alt and get the option to boot from the disk - the machine recognises that it is a Tiger install disk. When I select it I'm taken to the grey screen with the Apple logo and then it seems to hang. The DVD spins for a while and seems to be in use but then it stops.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do to resolve it? I have checked the disk in another mac and it is working correctly.

Yes, it sounds like you didn't connect the new drive correctly, or tripped over the optical drive upon doing so. One thing you can try is the startup manager, instead of the 'C' key, as the 'C' key doesn't always work. The startup manager is used among other things to boot the Hardware test volume, but you can also use it to force boot up the installer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27043?viewlocale=en_US
256 MB of RAM is hardly enough, even though it is the required minimum. And what can happen if you don't have enough RAM, some may be of sufficiently low quality, that it can't get everything it needs into memory. If after upgrading the RAM following specs*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
you still can't boot the disc with the startup manager, have an authorized service technician determine how badly you might have munged the hard drive installation.

  • Satellite C850-1CF and Win 8 - need to boot from CD

    Hello,
I need to boot from a CD on my C850-1CF which came with win8 preinstalled.
F12 is not presented at boot time. I understand this is because of UEFI.
To boot from a CD, what should I do (change boot to legacy ?). If so, how do I revert back to UEFI (Win8 does not start if boot mode is set to legacy).
    Pierre

    Hello
What you must do at first is to perform a complete shutdown .
After doing this start your notebook and press F12 to enter boot menu. There is option Enter Setup. Choose this option and enter BIOS settings.
After doing this follow instructions described on http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03F30002R01.htm and http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2C03F80002R01.htm

You can't boot from systems earlier than that shipped with the computer. For example, early 2008 Mac Pros come with 10.5.1 and can't boot 10.5
Also you can't boot with a DVD that was shipped with a different model Mac.

  • Booting from new disk drive

After copying all of my old drive onto a newer one I want to have all the computers that previously used the old drive boot into the new one. I can see the drive on my main server desktop but cannot boot from it. Any suggestions or readings you can suggest?

    Several questions.
What application did you use to copy the files? SuperDuper! (full disk cloning is free; a very good app by the way). Carbon Copy Cloner? Both of these apps will clone a disk and make it bootable.
Were you able to boot from this disk before?
Is this disk an external firewire or USB? As far as I know all Mac with a firewire port can boot from a firewire bootable disk. I think only more recent Macs can boot from a USB disk.
You mentioned server. Are you by any chance trying to do a NetBoot? After all this is the *Networking and Web* forum. If so then the Mac OS X Server forum might be a better place to ask about NetBooting.
