Do I need to buy 2 Windows 2012 R2 Standard Servers

Hi guys,
My question is that, I have been approached by a small Business company that needs a Solution for their System.  So naturally I proposed Windows 2012R2 STD with Open Volume  Licence. What I proposed is 01 Primary File/DC Server and a Back up File/DC
Server with DFS The Idea behind this is that in case the first server fails the second should pick up with out a glitch.  What i need to know is that with Windows 2012R2 STD Purchase do I need to buy 2 Units of Server Software? is there any other way
I can achieve this with just one Win2k12r2 STD
Appreciate all your assistance
Nilanga

  • Change license to Windows 2012 R2 Essentials and Windows 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
I'm working for a small company (10 users). We have 2 servers; 1 is a normal file server, domain controller etc.; the second is dedicated for running a financial application. We bought and installed new hardware but with so called 'Technet licenses'.
Obviously we need to buy proper licenses. I have 2 questions :
    1. Am I correct in buying 1 Windows 2012 R2 Essentials license, 1 Windows 2012 R2 Standard license and 10 CALs ?
    2. Can I just install these licenses 'over' the existing 'Technet licenses' ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Ronald Ruijtenberg

I would purchase one Server Standard license, install it as a hypervisor on the server, then add to VMs.  First one is Server with the Essentials role, the second to run your financial application.  You can do this on one physical box and you
only have to purchase one copy of Server Standard.

  • Migration from Small business server 2011 standad to Windows 2012 Server Standard

    Hi everyone,
I have a network with SBS 2011 standard (that is the only server) and now we are moving (migrating) to windows 2012 server standard with an exchange 2013 (not yet installed).
The main thing is that when trying to install the migration tool on the SBS server, it will not install because it is not a 2008 R2 server.
is there a workaround for this problem?
I Hope this will help. Amir Ovadia

    Hi,
Would you please first let me know how did you perform the migration? Regarding the migration tool, is it the Windows Server Migration Tools in Windows Server 2012 R2? Since you need to install
the Windows Server Migration Tools on the source SBS 2011 server, I suggest we could perform the following steps to install it.
Create deployment folders for ource computers by running the
smigdeploy.exe tool (included with Windows Server Migration Tools) on your destination server.
Register Windows Server Migration Tools on source computers that are running Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows
    Server 2003 by using SmigDeploy.exe.
For details, please refer to the following article.

In addition, here are some similar threads about how to perform the migration from SBS to Windows Server 2012 Standard, maybe they are useful to us.

As there is no specific documentation on migrating from SBS to Windows server 2012, if you want the step by step procedure about the migration, we’d better involve

So endeed it took me an afternoon to resize and reinstall everythings. But at the end of the day i found the right space to use and never resize it then.
To conclude for Lenny7118, it is possible to resize your partition after the installation. But it's up to you to use the free way, which need time, or camptune.

I have better things to do with my time then spending half a day resizing a partition, but thanks.

  • If I download bootcamp will i need to buy windows 7 before I can install a PC game?

I want to buy the new star wars old republic game when it comes out.  But its a pc game.  I heard i could download a program called bootcamp.  I just want to know if i will have to buy and install windows 7 in order to play a pc game on my macbook or can i just download bootcamp and install a pc game and start playing?

You don't have to download Boot Camp Assistant — you already have it in your Utilities folder.
Immediately after installing Windows, you must also install all the anti-malware garbage that a Windows computer requires, or your Windows partition will soon be awash in malware.

  • Qos DSCP value 46 gone, after enabling Remote Desktop Services on Windows 2012 R2 Standard

    Hi,
After installing a clean Windows Server 2012 R2 with
all Windows updates I have setup Policy-Based QoS for tagging defined traffic,
in the test case all traffic to one specific ip address. Whireshark logging
displays the correct configured (46) dscp value so the group policy is
working fine. After installing Remote Desktop Services the Policy-Based QoS is
still in place but Wireshark results that the value is 0.
Can somebody explain why this happens and how to solve
    it?
    Regards, Edward

    Hi Edward,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Did you find any related error for your case?
By default, Windows traffic has a DSCP value of 0. Network routers use the DSCP value to classify network packets and to queue them appropriately. The number of queues and their prioritization behavior needs to be designed as part of your organization's QoS
strategy. For example, your organization may choose to have five queues: latency-sensitive traffic, control traffic, business critical traffic, best effort traffic, and bulk data transfer traffic.
    More information, please see:
    Policy-based Quality of Service (QoS)

  • Windows 2012 R2 standard server Downloading problem

I am trying to downloading Windows server 2012 R2 from this link http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-windows-server-2012-r2?i=1. After giving saving location(path) I can not see downloaded file. The file has downloaded  or not, I can
    not understand.

    Hi,
I can download Windows Server 2012 R2 evaluation in the Technet Evaluation Center.
If it is downloading, you can check that in My Actions, it will show the Currently Downloading.
In addition, after it starts to download, it will be saved as .part file in your location. If you cannot see that, I recommend you to download it again to see if the issue perists.

  • File Share Cluster Transfer Issues - Windows 2012 R2 - Two Nodes

    Hi There,
I am having some issues in creating a simple file share on a 2 node cluster.
Each "File Server" is Windows 2012 R2 Standard.
Each server has 4 Nic Ports, 2 are configured as a Control Team and the other 2 as a Media Team.  The media team is specifically for any storage and file sharing traffic, the control team is purely for access to the server via RDC.
The storage is from a NetApp SAN connected via SAS cables to the 2 "File Servers" and transfer speeds to and from that are good (1GB/s)
I have looked at different step-by-steps to get this working, they all are similar to: https://robertsmit.wordpress.com/2012/06/26/clustering-fileserver-on-windows-2012-step-by-step/
The share permissions are configured with Everyone with Full Control.
Once the file shares are all set up, I can browse the shares and any current folders and files.
I can download any files that exist on these shares...
The issue is when I try to put a file on the share from a "client" server (win 2008 r2) or even from the other node (connecting to the file share location as I would on another machine)
I just get the copying dialogue attached, which sits there for about 3-4 minutes and then just finishes with a Network Error.
This only occurs during an upload of a file to the share.
All servers can ping each other, there are no cluster event errors..
Can anyone help, I need to get this fixed ASAP.
If you need more info then please ask.
    Thanks,
    -Tim

    Hi Tim,
Did you run the cluster validation before you create this cluster? Please disable any firewall or AV soft and install the recommended hotfixes and updates for Windows Server
2012 R2-based failover clusters update to narrow down the issue first.

  • Recovery disk or buy windows???

Best to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. No need to buy Windows (which you already paid for).
You probably don't even need to order the recovery discs. And you probably can do it yourself from the image on the hard drive.
See the section Recovering the Internal Storage Drive, which begins on p. 60 of the User's Guide.

  • SQL Server window nt-64bit on window 2012 R2

I just installed windows 2012 R2 standard, and there is a process called "sql server window nt-64bit"  that consumes 15 GB of memory SQL Server, but I have not installed SQL Server.
    My server have 32Gb RAM
    Where did that process?
¿can I control the memory consumption?
    cyber

    Hi Cybercosmos,
Quote: Then I understand that SQL Server or part of it is  included on Windows 2012 Server STD R2, it is correct?? if it is so,  how can I control the memory consumption?
No, the SQL Server is not included on Windows 2012 Server STD R2. It might  come with another program.
The sqlservr.exe process is also known as SQL Server Windows NT (Version - 64 Bit). This process is required if we are using applications that rely on the SQL service (of which there are many). If you are sure you do not need it, you can uninstall the related
    program using Windows Control Panel.
To remove SQL Server Windows NT from your computer, please follow the manual instructions below:
Click the Windows Start Button, look for Control Panel.
    Click Control Panel.
    Click Uninstall a program.
Look for SQL Server Windows NT in the list of available programs.
    Click Uninstall.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • Multiple Subordinate Issuing CA in Windows 2012 for redudancy

    Good Afternoon,
I would like to have 2 Subordinate Issuing CA's ( Both Windows 2012 R2)  in one site, with only one of them as preferred / active issuing certs to my workstations and the other one as backup redundant CA .  The backup CA should only issue Certs
if the primary one goes down.
How can i go about setting this configuration ? Is it as simple as starting CA services on the primary one and stopping CA Services on the other backup CA server ?
Also, our Domain/Forest functional level is currently 2003.  It needs to on 2003 due to some dependencies.  Can we have Root and other Issuing CA's on Windows 2012 R2 OS servers without upgrading DFL/FFL to 2012 R2 ?

    Vadims,
I am noticing a weird issue in my environment. Perhaps if you could advise on this or maybe this is how it's supposed to work. Need your expertise.
We are currently using EAP-TLS for our wireless authentication. We have a production Radius Server and a Testing Radius Server.  On both of  Radius /NPS Server, We are have selected "Microsoft:Smart or certificate" as the authentication
type under EAP  in our NPS / Radius server.
We currently have an Root CA which is also the Issuing CA setup on the same Windows 2003 DC. This has published client computer certs to all our workstations/laptops in the domain.  The client /computer cert is used during authentication to connect
    to our corporate wireless.
The plan is to retire this 2003 server and setup everything new on Windows 2012 platform.
So, I have setup a new Windows 2012 Root  and Issuing CA server in parallel to the Windows 2003 server for testing .  This 2012 ROOT CA is standalone and has not been joined to our domain . So it is not conflicting with the current 2003 CA.  On
the new 2012 issuing CA server, i created a computer template and issued it to a cpl of workstations for testing purposes.    I can see a new computer certificate coming from this new issuing CA in the " Personal Certificates" store of
those test workstations in addition to existing certificates issued by the 2003 CA.    My Test Radius Server has been configured to use a certficate from this 2012 CA as its proof of identity.
Now i am unable to connect to corporate wireless from these workstations.  The moment i delete this client computer cert coming from new 2012 CA, the workstation is able to authenticate successfully to the Radius server and connect.  Is it that
2 client certs which are in the personal certificate store of that PC are conflicting with each other ?  I am not clear as in why would they conflict with each and why upon deleting the new cert, i can connect successfully using the old client cert ?

  • Software needed to use Windows software on my Mac

    Hi,
I know this is probably a question that has been asked before, but here goes. I need to be able to use some Windows only applications on my iMac. I am thinking Parallels. My question is, do I also need to buy Windows for it to work? I've been to several websites for info but just can't find the answers.  Thanks a million.

I have a Macbook Air and do use Parallels for running Windows. I will just give a brief summary of my experience to hopefully help people decide. In my experience running Parallels or any VM software has some serious drawbacks. For one, you have not only Apple's OS running but then you have a application running in OS X trying to run a full fledge OS of Windows in that. In other words your adding a lot of potential problems. In one word I can say for all of its complexity it does run rather well if you can accept its limitations. Be sure you have enough RAM and consider 4GB a minimum if your also running Lion OS X. Botom line I think BootCamp is not only cheaper but better for running Windows. You already have to buy a full version of Windows (although their are cheats). Plus Bootcamp runs Windows natively so your not dealing with all the issues of a virtual machine. I tend to agree with some that if you need to use Windows enough, I probably would consider buying a cheap PC for that. I ran Windows on Parallels for a while but ended up adopting my wifes old PC laptop when she bought herself a new PC. I've suggested to some to buy a refurb PC laptop or off lease one. Cost of that vs buying Virtual software like Parllels or Fusion and a copy of Windows is most like less. My preference in order. 1. Windows/Bootcamp
    2. Buy cheap Windows PC 3. Use VM software on Mac if you absolutely need both on one machine.
