Do I need to buy an ethernet switch that has a WAN port

I want to buy an Aiport Express to handle a WiFi only iPad and an old PPC iMac with 10.5.8 on it that has no WiFi card.  The iMac gets on the internet from a cable plugged directly into its ethernet port (using DHCP).  The cable comes off an antenna at the front of the cottage.  A signal hits the antenna from a broadcasting tower about half a mile away.
I need to buy an ethernet switch for the Aiport Express to handle both the iPad wirelessly and the wired iMac.  Does the switch have to have a WAN port or can I buy one with five LAN ports?

So here's what I am planning to do.  I get myself an ethernet switch.  I plug my cable from my antenna into it.  I run a cable from one of its five ports into my iMac.  I run a cable from one of its other ports into my Airport Express.  I configure the Airport Express in Bridge Mode.  Now my wife can connect to the web wirelessly using the iPad and I can connect using the wired iMac --- and we can do so at the same time and indpendently of one another.   No?
Sorry, but no.
You only have one IP address.  With a switch feeding two devices, it will be a matter of chance as to which device gets the IP address.
The other device will not be able to connect to the Internet, since a switch cannot "split" the connection.
Instead, you need a simple wired router to "share" the public IP address that you receive. In turn, the router distributes "private" IP addresses to devices on your local network, so each device will be able to connect to the Internet.
As I mentioned, a switch cannot perform the functions of a router.

  • Verizon "flips switch" that has killed Pegasus mail over SSL

Last night Verizon email.administrators "flipped a switch" that has killed the use of Pegasus mail over SSL using TCP ports 465 and 995 as Verizon suggests we use.
I have experienced this and so has every other Pegasus Mail user who is on Verizon email.
There are posts on Usenet and posts on the Pegasus Forums
Thus the problem is not just me but ANYONE who is using Pegasus mail with the Verizon email server using...
    # Incoming mail server (POP3): incoming.verizon.net
    # Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
    # Outgoing mail server (SMTP): outgoing.verizon.net
    # Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465 Why is this important?
    # Your Verizon Online user name
    # Your Verizon Online password
    # Make sure "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked.
    The Lithium Software sux !!

Might be a bug in Pegasus related to TLS 1.1/1.2 security.  Based on someones post over at the site you pointed to looks like its not picking up the entire key.  Microsoft made changes in the support modules to fix a bug earlier this year and it causes the key to be split over transmissions.  Almost the same thing happend for web pages, including Verizons, when that change went in.

  • Do I need to buy an ethernet adapter or can I use one of my existing AEXPs?

My situation: Just ordered a MacPro which will be delivered Monday. In the mean time I need to find a WiFi solution. The Airport cards for this model are not available yet, and I need Internet access now. Obvious solution is an ethernet adapter.
My wireless setup: I have three AEXPs in my house. One is connected to my modem, the other two are set up as WDS.
Given this can I connect one of AEXPs set up as a WDS to my MacPro via ethernet to use as a bridge? If so, would it be plug n' play or would I need to reconfigure? (BTW my modem is nowhere near where the MP will be and can't be relocated due to the way Verizon rewired my DSL line and made one jack dedicated to DSL. So connection to the modem via wired router is not an option).
Or do I need to buy something like a Belkin wireless G router to set up as an ethernet bridge? I've found instructions on the web how to do this, but obviously I'd like to avoid spending money if I have equipment to do what I need to do already.
    Any guidance appreciated.

Are you sure that you are going to be able to install
this later? It does not appear on the MacPro DIY page.
Duane is correct the Mac Pro wireless card is not a user-installable part.

You CAN add Airport or BT after purchase, but it is not user upgradable. You have to have an Apple service provider do it.
    AirPort Extreme
The Mac Pro computer has an optional, internal AirPort Extreme module connected to a dedicated 1-lane PCI Express bus. The AirPort Extreme module is available as a fully-integrated configure-to-order option or as an Apple Authorized Service Provider kit, which can be installed by an Apple retail store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. For more information, see AirPort Developer Note.
    Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR Module
The Mac Pro computer has an optional, internal Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (enhanced data rate) module, with an antenna built into the enclosure. The Bluetooth module is connected via the internal USB 2.0 controller. The Bluetooth module is available as a fully-integrated configure-to-order option or as an Apple Authorized Service Provider kit, which can be installed by an Apple retail store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. For more information, see Bluetooth Developer Note.
Personally I would get it added as a CTO (BTO) and wait rather than have the mess of an external device and the hassle of having to install a card at a later date.

  • Need current ethernet switch that supports Appletalk

I need the name(s) of currently manufactured ethernet switches (4 port or greater) that support Appletalk. Does anyone know if these are available? I use an Etherprint to connect from the ethernet to the HP printer.
emac G4, 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Airport base extreme base, HP 6MP printer

    I agree with Kappy 100%.
But, I noticed you said you use a Farallon Etherprint adapter?
If yours is like mine, the etherprint has a special requirement. My etherprint isn't correctly detected by a 10/100 switch, and the switch tries to allow 100BaseT comm to go to the Etherprint. This locks up/locks out the Etherprint. The solution was posted on a Farallon web page (when they existed) 6-7 years ago. You must have a 10baseT hub between any 10/100 switch and the Etherprint - the hub is correctly sensed as 10baseT.
Like I said, I can't be sure if this applies to you - hope it helps.

  • Need help buying modestly priced mac that will run CS6

I work as the Communications Director at a very small veterans service non-profit with limited resources. I am not a graphic designer, but since we are very small all of the design projects fall on me being that I am in charge of creating all of our marketing materials and outreach videos. I have experience using Ps, Ai, and Id, but only on very high end computers (In the graphic design lab at college). Seeing that we don't have a ton of money to invest in new equipment I am wondering what are some modest specs I would need for CS6 to run smoothly. We have about $1,300 to spend so I am looking at refurbished models, although I could possibly squeeze a bit extra money if someone thinks it would make a big difference.
2 things I need to consider
    1) This is my only computer so I would like a macbook for the portability but am definitely open to getting a 21in iMac if it is a game changer.
    2) Longevity- A $1,300 investment is a large one and the reason I pressed so hard for a mac was its dependability and security. Bottomline is that if I am not still at the organization in 2 or 3 years I still want the next person (who will probably have much less computer, graphic design experience) to be able to inherit a computer that they can learn creative suite on and will function smoothly.
Here are two refurbs I have been looking at, let me know what you think or if you have other suggestions please feel free to share. All input is welcome as I don't have a ton of experience in the nitty gritty of CPU/GPU specs.

I have the exact MacBook Pro 13-inch retina (I got mine from refurbished as well) and it runs CS6 very nicely with no lag except when applying extreme filters where it takes a few seconds but that is usual.

That works well for me and the retina display is very nice for editing!
Also, you could check to see if there's a 128GB model of the one listed above to save some money unless you need at least that much storage.

  • Need to buy a wireless router that is compatible with 10.4.11 and macbook pro, and pc. Current Airport Extreme not a compatible option. Please help with suggestions.

Any mid range options would be helpful. Thank your.

You can set up and administer the Airport Extreme from any computer, Mac or PC. The only requirement is the version of Airport Utility appropriate for the OS, in order to accomplish its initial configuration. For Tiger, it's the one I linked.
Apparently the "chat" participant simply read from Apple's web page. Anyone can do that
Client operating systems are meaningless to the Airport itself (or any other wireless router).
Linksys made fine products before Cisco bought them. Cisco is focused on large corporate deployments, not small users - abandonment of the Flip is evidence of that. Their individual consumer support is horrible.

  • I am looking to buy a multifunction printer. that has 2 trays.

    I need 2 seperate trays
    1 to hold A4 paper
    And 1 to hold Envelopes.
I do-not want to have to take the paper out and then load envelopes.
i need an Auto feed for the envelopes like for the  paper A4 Paper.
Thank you for helping me if you can.

    Hi Derek291058,
I like the HP OfficeJet 8600 Premium.  It does have 2 trays with Tray 1 being the default tray.  Tray 2 only supports plain paper.  So, you could put envelopes in Tray 1 and change the default to Tray 2.
Also, remember a click on the Kudos star to the left is a quick "Thanks" for a helpful post.

  • Why is it that ICloud can't be accessed without buying a new device that has O-5 or higher.  What a RIP OFF.

A colleague send me an email that he had posted some joint work (many pgs/photos/charts in ICloud.  Needless to say, I had not access to an Apple device running O5 or higher, so though I could download ICloud, it couldn't be accessed.  When I called Apple support, I was advised that I would have to buy a new device to see and download the materials.  This is a blatent ripoff.  The Cloud is for sharing, not for greedy corporations to force consumers to buy new products.  Why is it that Microsoft's cloud is open to all and Apples' isn't?  Who's the bad guy here?

Use the Microsoft cloud, it's open, Apples is for Macs, iDevices, and may be accessed (but not created) on Windows 7 and 8.
Do you have Windows 7 or 8?

  • I need help with syncing my Ipod that has old music on it.

My mother has an Ipod with music on it from a computer we've had in the past (i'm almost certain the songs were downloaded via cd). We no longer have that computer, and the current Itunes account only has the songs she's bought since then. She's spent several gift cards on the songs, only to realize that syncing those songs would delete her old songs. Is there any way to get the current songs on her current itunes? Please help : /
She obviously no longer has those old cds, so that is not an option.

    Hi jacobfrommt,
I believe that you may be able to acomplish what you are describing by using the Manually Manage option in iTunes. You may find the following articles useful:

  • If I buy a Iphone 4 that has no sim card, can I use my 3gs sim card to activate this Iphone 4?

I found an Iphone 4 on ebay, and am wondering if I can insert my sim card from my 3gs phone, and get it to work, and then sync it with all my purchases on Itunes? I dont want to pay that much for a phone without being sure. Please advise what options I have. Thx

Yes, your SIM Card is compatible with the iPhone 4, but it will have to be cut to size of Micro SIM to fit in iPhone 4. Your Carrier can easily transfer your # to a Micro SIM for you. If in the US go to ATT store and they can provide you with Micro SIM Card.

  • Do I need an ethernet switch or new router for IP camera setup with old Airport Express

    Hello,
I am trying to setup a third party Foscam IP camera to my network so that I can ultimately use it as a baby monitor, and am having some difficulty.  I currently still have an old Airport Express (with one ethernet port only).  This is preventing me from setting up the initial camera because I don't have another ethernet port to plug it in to on the router.  I am wondering if I can just buy an ethernet switch and have it "split" the ethernet from my modem to both the camera and the Airport (I do need to check with my ISP provider if they give me two separate IP address... but if they do, would this work?).
I am fairly sure however, that my ISP provider (comcast) only provides one IP for my account.  Does this mean I would have to buy a new router altogether with more than one ethernet port on it or one with a WAN port?  Would I, in this case, have to plug the modem into the WAN port on the router, and then the camera to one of the ethernet ports on the router?
I consider myself fairly tech savy, but when it comes to routers, IPs, LAN, WAN, etc. I get a bit lost.  This has been creating quite a headache for me and any help would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but this won't work as the modem expects only a single device ... either a computer or a router to be connected to it. Unless your modem is actually a combination modem & router or gateway device, then you would need a different router to solve your networking problem.

  • E4200 + Dell PowerConnect 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch work/notwork?

We have a Dell™ PowerConnect™ 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch and with the e4200 having only 4 ports a fifth port is needed if we are not able to resolve the usb/printer fiasco that we have been struggling with for the past three days.
Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, PLEASE hlep!
    Thanks,

We have the e4200 v.1 router with four ports in the back and we have updated the usb to network in a xeror 8400 printer via a usb connection. But after three days of trying, only one computer can find the printer on the e4200 router's usb port.
Plan B: give up trying to connect four computers (filling the four ports in the router) to the e4200 usb printer connection and utilize this Dell™ PowerConnect™ 2016 Fast Ethernet Switch which has 16 ports and network in the printer on this dell Ethernet Switch.
BUT, I don't know if this can be done with the e4200 since the CC/Linksys does not appear to be PnP friendly & we don't have the resources to hire in a tech. I can follow instruction, please point me in the right direction. Many thanks if you can assist,
