Do I need to buy snow leopard first?

do I need to buy snow leopard first? And then buy Lion OS?

Yes. Because it's in the App store, which is only available through SL. At the end of the day that's still only $60.
Also, make sure your computer is compatible

Make sure your machine meets the minimum system requirements:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Although it says 2 GB RAM is the minimum, it's generally recommended to have at least 4 GB unless you only use your machine for "light" use (no movie editing/burning, etc).

Can I upgrade to Lion from OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard)?  Do I need to install Snow Leopard first?  If so, Which version?

There are only two versions of Snow Leopard, the ordinary one and the server edition.  Most people have no need of the server edition.  Any Snow Leopard retail disc, no matter how old, even 10.6.0, can be updated to 10.6.8, so the version is pretty much irrelevant.  You need to make sure your hardware is up to scratch for Lion though - you have to have an Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or better - NOT Core Duo.

How can I add icloud to macbook pro?  Do I need to buy snow leopard & lion?

Lion 10.7.2 is required for iCloud. Your computer must meet the requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Do I need to buy snow leopard 10.6 before I can buy Lion?

Do I need to buy snow leopard 10.6 before I can buy Lion?

Yes and then update it to 10.6.8 (combo update from apple.com) and then you are good to go. Just make sure you have everything backed up before upgrading to any new system.
    Cheers

  • I am running Leopard OS X 10.5.8.  I want to upgrade to Lion.  Do I need to download Snow Leopard first?

I am running Leopard OS X 10.5.8.  I want to upgrade to Lion.  Do I need to download Snoe Leopard first?
    Thanks

I cannot make that determination for you. Snow Leopard is not available as a download. You have to purchase it at an Apple Store or order it online. Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later is required to purchase and download Lion from the App Store. Total cost would be $59.00 exclusive of tax and shipping (if any.)
Sometime this month Apple plans to make available a USB flash drive containing the full standalone Lion installe for $69.00. If you did not want Snow Leopard then you may want to wait for this to be available.

  • Do I need to buy Snow Leopard to download iTunes 10?

I just got the iPhone today and when I went to sync it, it said I needed the newest version of iTunes. I downloaded it, but now it's saying that I need OS X 10.5. I have an old Mac that I've always kept mainly for my iTunes. Does Apple really expect that I'm going to purchase new software after spending $250 today buying my phone?

    Hi jmd1234,
iTunes 10 requires OS X 10.5 or later. OS X 10.5 is actually Leopard, but you can currently purchase Snow Leopard for £25 ($29) on Amazon. You can check that your mac meets the general requirements for Snow Leopard [here|http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html].
    Kind regards,

  • Do I only need to buy Snow Leopard once?

Ive been looking for this info everywhere but I cant find it.
I own a Mac Pro and and Macbook Pro. I'd like to upgrade both to Snow Leopard (currently running 10.5.8)
Will it work if I only order Snow Leopard once and install it on both Macs or will I have to buy it twice?
    Thanks

It will work but it's a violation of the terms of the license agreement (i.e. you are stealing). You can use the family pack on 5 of your machines, but not with 4 of your friends.
The terms are clearly spelled out: Up 5 machines in the same household.

  • Need help buying Snow Leopard.

Hi. I'm new to Apple in the sense of iPhone, iPad but only Windows on PC. Now, however, I want to swap over to Apple completely but the Apple site won't let me buy any OS's. Very confusing.

@mende1, that is 100% incorrect. I personally know someone who has a dual-boot sustem with Snow Leopard & Windows 7 on the same HDD so it is possible to do it. He's a professional DJ who uses Mac for work & Windows for games.
And call? I thought the who idea of online was so I didn't have to get stuck talking with an idiot who calls themselves a "Genius"?!

  • Do you need to buy Snow Leopard 10.6 before 10.6.3?

I'm looking to buy the Snow Leopard upgrade and am noticing that there are both 10.6 and 10.6.3 upgrades available. Will I have to purchase both before I am able to upgrade to Montain Lion?

No. The current version of Snow Leopard on DVD is 10.6.3.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

  • Do i need to download snow leopard to Buy a program from the apps store?

There is a image editing program that I am trying to purchase, but in order to, I have to purchase it now from the Mac Apps Store. It seems I don't have the Apps store And I heard that I needed Snow leopard (10.6.6?) in order to have access to the Apps Store. I currently have 10.5.8..So is this the problem? Would I need to buy Snow leopard? And when I do, Does it just download onto my computer or do I actually have to send out for a disc ? Any feedback would be appreciated.. THANKS!!

Would I need to buy Snow leopard?
You need it to get the Mac App Store. If you haven't already, check the manufacturer's website or the online Apple Store from the link above for that program.
And when I do, Does it just download onto my computer or do I actually have to send out for a disc ?
You need to get it on DVD.

Yes, there's been no updates to 10.5.8 for quite awhile, next is paid Upgrades.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

It looks like they might still have it...

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
