Do i need to condition my laptop battery?

I got a brand new dv7 laptop, do i have to "condition the battery" since its brand new? I cant get a straight answer on this. everything i read is different.they say yes, no, store fully charged, store half charged, fully discharge at least once a month, never discharge more than 70%, etc. does anyone know the CORRECT way to use a new Li-ion battery?

Yeah pretty much leave it alone. There is no need to "condition" the battery. That was true in 1994 with Nickel Cadmium batteries which had a wicked memory effect. Nickel Metal Hydride had a smaller memory effect and Lithium ion has none. Most of the advice you are seeing about how to handle it is based on trying to avoid memory effect, which would mean that if you discharged it down to say 40%, then recharged, you could never get it below 40% again. If you are going to take it out and store it yes run it down to about 50% first. There is no need to do that unless it is going to be deskbound for more than a couple weeks. Also avoid discharging below about 20% but the battery management program in Windows can be set to warn you about that. Otherwise there is no need to play games with it, like discharging it once a month. Use it and be prepared that it is going to last 1.5-3 or 4 years depending on how much you cycle it.

  • SCCM Report for Laptop Battery Condition

    Good morning,
We are in a situation where we're needing to monitor conditions of laptop batteries in the school district I manage.   I have added the laptop batteries class(Win32_Battery) and have all required/requested information checked under this class.  This
has been set for a week, so all devices should be inventoried by now.
How do you recommend my getting a report together that shows battery condition/etc?  The fields I would like to see are ones such as:
    Win32_Battery
    battery status
    design capacity
    design voltage
    Expected Life
    Error Description
    Full Charge Capacity
Really anything that will help us in knowing which laptops batteries need replacing.
I am not that knowledgeable about SQL reporting/SCCM reporting, so any help in getting this is greatly appreciated.  Any resources that you can point me in for getting more familiar with creating my own reports would be greatly appreciated.  I
don't even know where to begin.
    Thank you!

Good you have added the class. Please use the following link for the detailed information about Win32_Battery:

Last Full Charge should guide your decision on replacement.

  • Do I need to "condition" the battery in a new MacBook?

Please forgive my ignorance, but do I need to "condition" the battery in a brand new MacBook that I just bought? i.e. Do I need to charge it fully, unplug it, and let it run down completely before charging it again? Or is that only for the older batteries?

Thanks, Jay. About an hour ago I opened it, turned it on, and started downloading and installing system updates. It's been plugged in this entire time. Should I have just turned it on and plugged it in to charge without using it? The article isn't entirely clear on that. Or can I keep setting it up and using it as long as it's plugged in until the light on the power cord turns green (before unplugging it and allowing the battery to run down)?

  • Laptop battery replacent needed for ZD8000

I have a HP ZD8000 and need to buy a replacement battery. Unfortunately, the battery does not fall under the HP battery recall program and HP does not have a direct replacement for it listed on their site. Not sure how that one works. They must be outsourcing.
Anyhow, I've never had to purchase a replacment battery and would like get recomendations for a reputable company that makes a quality replacement. It's a 14.8V 6600mAHr Li-ion battery.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

That is a bit older laptop and I have found eBay to be a generally reliable source of laptop batteries for older systems. There are three types of batteries sold there: "knock-offs" which are generally made in China, old stock of "new" genuine HP batteries, and used batteries. Except for very old units for which there is no choice I stay away from used. Knock-offs have some risk of defects but they are cheaper and actually can hold a better charge than real batteries since the manufacturers use current model cells. Old stock of genuine batteries cost more, but are going to be fully compatible. Batteries do lose some strength just sitting on the shelf, however. Find an eBay seller with very high positive feedback, of which there are many who sell batteries for laptops. Keep in mind that shipping from China can take two weeks, so try to look for one being shipped from the U.S.
    $30 knock-off
    $35 used
    $43 "new"
The zd8000 battery is the same guts as several other models like the zv5000, etc. You may have to swap out the plastic cover plate on the bottom of the battery. It might be glued in place so be persistent.

  • Lost my laptop battery need a replacement

My laptop battery got lost during moving.  A "good" local shop said it was impossible to order a new battery for the laptop without knowing a serial number that is on the battery.
Could anyone help me find that number?
    I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC -- Model dv6- 2106ea.

I would certainly have my doubts about any information that "good" shop provides if they told you that. Knowing the serial number on the old battery as a requirement to purchase a new battery is not a true statement.
Order a battery online from a vendor. just do a Google or Bing search like this one that I did. There is no requirement to purachase an OEM HP battery. Comparison shop as the price range is tremendous.
If you feel you absolutely must have an HP brand battery see the part numbers in the image below.

  • Need to replace HD + (possibly) battery

Hi -- I've got a MBP 4,1 (Early 2008) -- and the hard drive is starting to make pretty loud noises.  It coincided (at least I *think* it did) with a repair that the Apple Store did on a the case or housing that includles the trackpad & surrounds the keypad.  But I figure that's just a coincidence.
    1.  At any rate, I've got a Fujitsu 200GB drive that came with the machine.  And though I've been pretty good about backing up my data, I think it may be time to replace the drive (I assume the symptoms are awful noises -- but maybe not?).  Specs on the current drive are at the end of this message.
    Will this drive fit:
    Western Digital 750GB
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136546
WD7500BPVT 750GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Also -- I don't understand the difference between 5400 RPM and 7200 RPM.  I understand what RPM literally means -- but will either of these speeds work with my machine (a google search suggests so but I wasn't sure) or is my choice of harddrives confined to one particular speed?  I don't see any particular RPM spec for my current HD in the System Profiler.
    2.  In addition, the system profiler suggests that the battery be "replace[d] soon".

  • Need to find the cmos battery on Satellite Pro 2100

I have a laptop that isn't keeping date/time settings and I need to identify the laptop to find the correct instructions for taking it apart.
The make is a Satellite Pro SP2100, model number PS210E006P9-EN however I'm unable to find this make/model on the Toshiba website. The nearest I can find is Satellite 2400-103, Part Number : PS240-014T1 which looks identical.
I've tried using the Toshiba identification tool to detect what the laptop is but that fails to provide any results.
I also need to find what the power supply is for this unit as the current one is faulty and has wires exposed.
The current adapter with it is PA3201U-1ACA, the problem is this adapter has got another adapter on the end to fit in the power socket in the back of the laptop. The connector at the end of PA3201U is too thin to fit.

    Hi
This notebook is very old and the name of this machine is: Satellite Pro 2100 PS210E
    > I have a laptop that isn't keeping date/time settings and I need to identify the laptop to find the correct instructions for taking it apart.
Usually the CMOS battery can be charged. You have to connect the AC adaptor and the notebook should be powered up for about 12-14 hours.

  • How to install new laptop battery.

Using HP Support Assistant, my HP G61 110SA laptop battery wouldn't recalibrate so it told me to replace it.  I have now bought a new one but can't find any instructions anywhere on HOW to install it!  Plus, should I fully charge before installation etc..  Any help, advice, info and especially links to instructions would really be appreciated.  I'm using Windows7 64 bit.
    thanks.

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.

The procedure to remove and replace the battery can be found in chapter 4, page 4-7.
Once you install your new battery, I recommend you fully charge it.
If you need to use your notebook, use it with the A/C power connected until the battery is charged, if possible.

  • Do I need to buy a new battery?

My Macbook (OS X Version 10.5.8) battery won't charge. In the system profile application, the "condition" under Power>Health Information says "Check Battery" (see picture below). Do I need to buy a new battery or is there something else I can do to fix it?

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

  • Do I need iTunes to recharge the battery of my iPod?

I will be taking a 12 hrs flight on Friday and would like to watch iPod during the flight. However, I need to recharge my battery after 2 hours or do something else. I do have my company laptop (w/ USB port) with me but the laptop does not have iTunes (thks to company policy).
Do I need iTunes to recharge the battery of my iPod? Or is the USB port is enough?

you don't need itunes to charge it
some laptops have low power usb ports, so it is worth checking before you travel to see how good a job of charging the laptop can do
you can get external battery packs to go with the ipod, but this can be a pricey way of using it
the owner of this page has many links to commercial options and also some diy versions... http://home.speedfactory.net/tcashin/ipodbattery.htm
if your seat on the aircraft has power, there are also ipod cables available to use that

Can I always Plug in my laptop in AC Adaptor or not?

    Hi,
    1. Without battery: It depends, if your area has very stable electricity source then ok, otherwise you need some sorts of backup (battery) or UPS. I actually use UPS in my house because I still have few desktops.
    2. With battery: Many people are more concern about the battery life, here are few tips:

  • Laptop battery and generic MagSafe adapter

My MagSafe adapter went dead. If I use a generic MagSafe adapter the ones that you buy on ebay. Would  this damage my laptop battery?

I would avoid those - I tried it once in my old 15 inch Macbook - and for some reason - it only works when it wants to and my battery needed to be replaced after a couple of months (coincidence maybe?).
So spend the extra $20 for the Apple Branded Magsafe.
Then again, that's just my suggestion.

    For what it's worth...
Here is an Apple bulletin regarding defective batteries so check it out to see if your battery(s) are affected. When I first reviewed this article, I removed and inspected my battery for the first time after more than 4-months of ownership and sure enough, mine was in the list.
    Excerpt:
"The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. See photos below. Only batteries within the noted serial number ranges need to be exchanged."
