Do I need to create partition on msata before factory/recovery install?

I am trying to use the recovery media to install the factory settings W7 to a newly installed Intel 310.
I have installed the 310, and it is definitely there and recognized by the computer.  I have removed my HDD and plugged in a DVD drive.  Also on hand are the successfully created recovery media (1 CD + 3 DVDs).
I put in the CD and boot via the DVD drive.  The Windows screen comes on and then it goes to R&R.  From there, I cannot for the life of me figure how how to start the ball rolling on installing W7 to the msata drive.
The two options presented appear to be to install a previous recovery backup, and none are listed.  Or to recover from an image, which then takes me to a screen that does not seem to identify an image no matter which of the four recover discs I put in.
Is there any Lenovo page that shows step by step to re-installing recovery media from disk?  I'm not a complete newb so this is frustrating.
My only guess perhaps is that I need to create a partition on msata before starting the factory recovery.  Not sure why that would be the case in that the factory recovery probably has utilities built in to do so, but I can't think of anything else.
Thanks for any help.

Tried it again.  Didn't work.  But it's now clear to me that Lenovo R&R is failing to recognize the recovery disk that it created earlier today.  R&R said the recovery media was successfully created, but I guess not.
I will try installing from a Win7 installation disc.  Thanks for your help.

  • Need to create partition

i am using os x lion. and install windows using booth camp. which works fine. but when i create a new partition from disk utility the windows no longer works. i really need separate partition for windows, os x and for personal files. So any one knows how i can have these 3 partions.

No, the recovery partition is owned by the operating system and is the backup of the OS itself...you cannot, and should not, mess with that.
You would be better served by an external hard drive to use for bakcups and working partitions...see some of those from Mac specialists like OWC, http://www.macsales.com where you can get some guaranteed compatible hard drives.

  • Do I need to uninstall Logic Express 8 before I can install Logic Studio?

    - NOT the upgrade version. Any issues I need to be aware of. Presumably my projects and associated files (which I have on a separate) will open up automatically in Logic Pro?

Fear not, Logic Studio is just a full version of Logic. It will install additional AU instruments, Main Stage application and over 40 Gb of loops (if you choose so). But I am sure your preferences will remain the same. As it is the same 8th version, then there's nothing to be worried about, I suppose.
Well, back up your projects though, just in case

  • New to Mac - do I need to create a start-up disc?

    Hi
I've recently switched over to an iMac from PC - I've worked with macs but I didn't have to deal with back-ups myself (they were all networked)
I have an external HDD which uses Time Machine to back-up - I did hope to use that as back-up and keep a stash of stock photos (large file!) on there too but I've heard that it's not a good idea to do that (even if I partitioned the drive)
My main issue is that I've heard that the back-ups cannot be used as a 'start-up' disc in case something happens to the iMac - so can someone let me know how I should go about doing this? (I didn't get any discs with the iMac so what do I do if something does happen?)
and while I'm asking questions... do you think I should get another external HDD? one to use for photo storage etc (I work professionally with Photography so they are large files) and then use the other for time-machine?
can you use a smaller sized HDD for time-machine? (the external drive I have now is 500GB -
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Memory: 4 GB
    Hard Drive 320GB

I've moved over from a PC to a MBP since May, and have dealt with similar backup issues concerning backups of software projects (also large files) daily. So I can share my thoughts and experience here.
    1) I would keep the photo file originals on a separate external USB HDD (not the Time Machine backup) with Read-Only attribute. When I copy files from my Mac to an external disk drive, I think it automatically takes on an archive attribute (read-only). With Leapord 10.5, I think that drive can even be in NTFS format (as used by Windows XP & Vista).
Since HDD eventually fails, I would, over time, back up these high resolution photos on Dual density (8GB) DVDs.
Because it'll probably take too many DVDs to back up al the photos, an easier option is to purchase an external backup drive systems that automatically back up a copy of your data on its own separate physical HDD package inside the same box. At the minimum, the box would actually contain two identical size HDD, but you get to use only one. The second drive is for the automatic backup. These boxes are called RAIDs, and a decent one will notify you when it detects a disk error on any one of the two drives so you can preventively replace the faulty drive to give your data full protection. The best I've seen cost $800 list for a TeraByte of protected disk storage. This box actually uses multiple data redundancy schemes to give you flexibility in buying HDDs as your need grows, but you do need to start with at least two drives for data protection. See...

A review of its abilities and limitations was published on ZDNet..
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=508
The author of the review called himself his first review harsh, and I agree since the limitations was due to physics and user selection of disk drives that were installed, no design.
    2) For any photo files that I am manipulating daily, I would keep them on my Mac so that Time Machine so that every revision I make is backed up.
As far as whether you need to create a start-up disk, I believe the answer is no. From Apples own online documentation, you can recovering your Mac installation from Time Machine. I understand that if you allow Time Machines to back up up everything (default setting), the procedure to full system recovery is:
    1) Reformat the boot disk and restore MacOS X from the CDs that came with the computer.
    2) Connect the external Time Machine backup drive, bring up Time Machine and restore. You can find the details by searching the Time Machine discussions. I saw some users even tried the procedure out for real.
I've consider using one of the many backup software to back up a full disk image of my Mac, so I re-install my Mac with that disk image. The problem with this is it's a duplicating backup scheme: twice the amount of work and cost. And when the mac crashes, which one backup do I use?

  • Do I need to create a recovery file for my new laptop if there is a HP recovery

    I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC 15 - n219 sa
Serial : [Edited for Personal Information]
    Product # : F9U67EA#ABU
    There is a recovery partition.
I am a bit confused on the issue of recovery file creation. I have found instructions on youtube on the the creation of an image of the laptop but I wonder why I need to do that given there is a HP recovery manager.
Although I do not really know what the manager does.
Can anyone tell me what the best strategy is regarding recovery files for this laptop taking in to account the partition.
After I have done this I wish to remove macfee and install the Norton I bought. Do I need to disable the macafee? If so how do I do this?
Can I remove the macefee to save space on the hard drive?
If you can help with these questions that would be much appreciate.
I gues I just want to do the right thing with this new laptop and avoid deleting too much whilst savinbg space and having a protected machine I can restore.

    Hi,
You should definetely create a set of Recovery Media - this is your copy of the operating system.  An example of when you may need this would be if you had to replace the Hard Drive - details on creating this can be found on the following HP document.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03481733&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en
Regarding McAfee, you should uninstall this first before trying to install Norton - you can do this in the usual way by opening Windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for McAfee and select Uninstall.  When the process has completed, restart the notebook before installing Norton.

  • RMBP Mid 2014 Windows 7 installer can't create partitions

    Hi all,
I have a late 2014 Retina Macbook Pro with 1TB SSD and Intel Iris Graphics (no nVidia). It has been updated to Yosemite 10.10.2.
So for I had good luck installing Windows 8.1 Professional on it via the bootcamp assistant from a USB key. Unfortunately, due to work requirements, I need Windows 7 (compatible VPN clients and proprietary software at a customer). Windows 7 Professional SP1 however won't cooperate. For the record, I off course removed Windows 8.1 first again via BCA.
First problem was that the 16GB Lexar Jumpdrive I used to install Win 8.1 didn't want to boot when it was created by BCA for Windows 7. Even when holding the Option key at boot, it didn't even show in the boot options. Very weird. This was quickly solved by using an 8GB Kingston Datatraveller stick instead which boots fine.
The BCA does all its stuff correctly then but when booting into Windows 7 and starting the install, the Windows installer first complains it must format the bootcamp partition as NTFS. If I then do that, the installer complains it can't create additional partitions.
OK so let's format it to NTFS. Gone is the BOOTCAMP label.
But Windows refuses to install anyway.
I do not have any additional USB drives inserted, nor is there a Superdrive present. Apple support page said to remove any Thunderbolt devices but there are none.
I have looked for similar threads but the reports there are about the fusion drives in the new 5K iMac and Windows 8.1.
So far I have also tried to format the bootcamp partition as ExFat as suggested in other threads but this makes the Windows 7 installer complain it needs additional drivers for CD/DVD and refuses to install.
This is what I see when I hold the Option key during startup when BCA has created the partition and the USB install drive is inserted:
So I'm kind of out of options. Any help or hint would be appreciated!

So this is quite embarrassing. I had already deleted the Windows 7 partition via BCA so to answer your question Loner T, I started BCA again. Unticked create USB installer and download support software and only let it create the Windows 7 partition again. The only difference with last time: I choose 149GB instead of 102GB (thanks to the bloody difficult slider in the BCA).
After bootup of the USB key the install went fine and now I'm looking at a running Windows 7 on my rMBP
Problem is: I have no idea how I solved it. What I did before I posted my question:
    - Partition size was 102GB vs 149GB now
    - The previous BOOTCAMP partition was erased and reformatted by DiskUtility in ExFat
    - It was then removed by BCA
Could this have reset the out of sync MBR vs GPT?
Anyway, it works. Here's the output of the commands:
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

  • Disk utility-erasing a HD, creating partition map hanging

    Hi all,
I have been given an external Maxtor USB drive, 120 BG, with the need to securely wipe the old information on it. I have used Disk Utility, and zeroed the HD with a 7 times pass. This took 17 hours, and it moved to the "create partition map" stage. It's been doing that for 24 hours and still the progress bar is rolling. All other options are greyed out and nothing can be selected in Disk Utility. I have chosen to format it in Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. There was about 45 GB data on the drive.
Would this amount of time be expected, or has something gone wrong? I hesitate to force quit DU, in case I render the drive unusable. If I do that or shut down the computer, what's likely to happen to the HD? Will I be able to mount it again and start over. Any tips much appreciated.
    Frances

    Hi Frances,
17 hours for the 7-times pass is normal (and usually completely unnecessary unless you work for the CIA). However, the hang at the "create partition map" stage is not normal. I would interrupt it and reformat the drive, since the zeroing is finished anyway.

  • Unable to create partition for solaris 10

I have windows 7 installed in my vaio, and want to install solaris 10. I have 190 gb of space. Which I divided as
    1. 40 gb for windows
    2. 65 gb
    3. 65 gb
    4. 20 gb unallocated
I want to install Solaris in unallocated space. when I try to install solaris 10. It shows only two partition 40 gb and 150 gb. I am new to Solaris.. please help.

hello, you don't have to use hme0, that may not be your NIC type. your NIC appears to be realtek adapter. download the drivers first [try here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/rf-1.0.9.tar.gz] install them, then your NIC will have a name like rt0. you can then proceed to set its interface.i hope ifconfig -a, blah, blah is ok with u. If the adapter is ok then you can now do the zones - they are just automatic no strugling!
you can also find the drivers from realtek website at -- ftp://152.104.238.194/cn/nic/rtl8139abcd8130810xseries/rtls211.zip
here are sample instructions on how to install the driver
    How to install Solaris/x86 version
    1. This is the version 2.1.1 RTL8139 serials driver for Solaris/x86
    version.
    2. It support Speed/Duplex-Force mode, you can set it through rtls.conf file.
    3. It supports 3 PCI-VID_DID cards, VID_10EC_DID_8139 for Realtek's
native, VID_1113_DID_1211 for Accton and VID_1186_DID_1301 for
    D-Link in the install script.
    4. Install method:
    a. Power-off your PC and insert your RTL8139 adapter.
    b. Boot-up you Solaris/x86 and login as "root".
    c. Copy the "rtls211.zip" into the temporary location in your
    hard-driver.
    d. UNZIP the "rtls211.zip" and you will get 3 files, "rtls", "rtls.conf" and
    "Install".
    e. If the PCI ID for your RTL8139 adapter is not VID_10EC_DID_8139
or VID_1113_DID_1211 or VID_1186_DID_1301, you can modify the
"Install" file to match your PCI ID, VID_ABCD_DID_WXYZ for example,
    modify the "pci1186,1301" to "pciABCD,WXYZ".
    f. Run the "Install" from File Manager to install the driver, and
it will modify 2 files, "/etc/name_to_major" and "/etc/driver_aliases"
    g. You need to create the "/etc/hostname.rtls0" file and modify some
other related files to make your networking environments working well.
    h. You can execute "touch /reconfigure" then "shutdown -i5 -g0", so that
Solaris will reboot and scan changed hardware environment.
    i. You can execute "ifconfig -a" to make sure the RTL8139 driver is up.
    success. bye

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++
I need to upgrade my early 2008 Mac Pro3,1 from OS 10.6.8 to 10.8.5 in order to download Autodesk Maya 2015 for a 3D animation class.
10.6.8 has served me well, supporting my use of Adobe CS5 Production Premium applications; Adobe CS4 inDesign; Audacity Sound Editor; and other programs for web, graphic design and video editing.
But my major concern in upgrading to 10.8.5 is that my existing application software I use for 2-D stuff will continue to work.
    Here are my questions:
    1. If I create a partition on my Mac HD and install 10.8.5 on that partition it as my startup disk, will this be my escape clause if some applications do not work with 10.8.5? (i.e. Can I revert to the unpartitioned part of the HD to start up with 10.6.8?)
    2. How large should a partition used for 10.8.5 be?
    3. Should I download and install Maya 2015 to that partition as well?
    4. Is my Time Machine Backups external drive sufficient to qualify as backing up my HD? If so, should I power it off before doing all this?
Any answers to these questions or or further advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Easier to show you products I think
    This adapter:
    Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter (Support M.2 PCIe 2280, 2260, 2242)
Then the "blade" is an SSD that fits on a PCIe adapter so it is different than your 2.5" SSD.
These were first used in MacBook Pro 2013, they are "blade" shape and is what is found in the Late 6,1 2013 Mac Pro black cylinder.
Minimum is fine for most, but not if you use Adobe or heavy graphics or video, then larger is better. And larger also means faster. They are plug and play, no support needed, support is built into the Mac Pro already all models from 2006 thru 2012.
This is what I would recommend. Costs 2x as much but no $100-300 controller needed, no issues with booting that many other cards exhibit.
    Samsung XP941 256GB PCIe 2.0 x4 M.2 SSD MZHPU256HCGL
There is smaller 128GB for $142 (Amazon) or $136 (Newegg, sh extra).

I would need two SSDs, maybe even two controllers, to get 900MB/sec writes and 1100MB/sec reads.
That is 10x better than hdd which have slower seeks (8-12ms) and access, whereas SSD in blade form is as close to zero as it gets.

GeForce GTX 980 vs 9 other GPUs running Resolve, LuxMark, and Octane Render
    INSIGHTS
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 beats all other GPUs rendering noise reduction in DaVinci Resolve.
As for OpenCL in LuxMark, one GPU edged out the GTX 980: the AMD Radeon R9 290X. The GTX 980 still impresses since it is twice as fast running LuxMark than the next fastest NVIDIA GPU, the GTX 780.
Only NVIDIA GPUs appeared in the Octane Render graph. That's because only CUDA capable GPUs are compatible of rendering in that app. The GTX 980 edges out the GTX 780 and blows away all the other NVIDIA GPUs. Notice we included results for dual 980s. That's a teaser for an upcoming article.
We wanted to include a graph showing After Effects CC 2014 rendering the Robot ray-trace 3D project, but AE gives us ray-trace loading errors when we attempt it with the GTX 980. Once that issue is resolved, we will add that graph to this page.
The GeForce GTX 980 may not have dominated every test but keep in mind that it ran with only the Mac Pro tower's internal power no matter how hard it was stressed. That can't be said of the GeForce GTX 780, Radeon R9 290X, and Radeon HD 7970 -- all of which had one power port plugged into an auxillary power supply to prevent possible self-power-down by the Mac Pro.
    http://barefeats.com/gtx980b.html
Bear in mind, these would bring your system up as far as feasible or possible and only other item would be a couple 2-4TB HGST drives. The system boot drive can be small and fast, and should not have any media, data or such - unless you have a large enough SSD blade, then having those with its ultra-high I/O is fine, so Lightroom, scratch and such benefit. But media projects, most video projects, no . There are a few hardy souls that are building out 2TB of SSD for large volumes for their projects and work (4 x 500GB and above).
When I put a SSD in my system in 2010 it was nice. When I upgraded in 2013 it was better. The last year though has seen a lot of improvements. And reductions in price. So that today any Mac can come with flash storage - great for its no noise, almost no heat, and tiny size. 80 x 22mm is small! Took me 4 minutes to attach to the Lycom adapter. Instantly recognized, formatted, and cloned the system to SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner. Boots instant, and system response for loading apps, data, graphics, AND writing to disk are nearly instantaneous.

then in interface select the target datastore (diagram tab)
in properties select the new key for update column.
I mean the partion will be created based upon the target column key.

  • Create partition table upto level 3

    Hi All,
I want to create partition table using 3 columns. could you please tell me is that possible to do in oracle 11G. if can please tell me the way to create
    PARTITION BY LIST (Acct_type)
    SUBPARTITION BY LIST (PERIOD)
and needs to partition this using another column.( account_source)
    please help me.
    Regards,
    krish

    Hello,
3 levels of partition are not possible.
But perhaps you can combine 2 levels as follows:
With Oracle 11g you can use a virtual column:
    CREATE TABLE F_ACCOUNT_PART
    acc_type varchar2(100),
    acc_source varchar2(100),
    period date,
    acc_type_source varchar2(201) as (acc_type||'_'||acc_source) )
    PARTITION BY LIST (acc_type_source)
PARTITION FA_AA_ACC1 VALUES ('AA-ACC1') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_BB_ACC1 VALUES ('BB-ACC1') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_CC_ACC1 VALUES ('CC-ACC1') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_DD_ACC1 VALUES ('DD-ACC1') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_AA_ACC2 VALUES ('AA-ACC2') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_BB_ACC2 VALUES ('BB-ACC2') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_CC_ACC2 VALUES ('CC-ACC2') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION FA_DD_ACC2 VALUES ('DD-ACC2') TABLESPACE USERS,
PARTITION all_other VALUES (DEFAULT) TABLESPACE USERS
)For versions prior to 11g you have to build a new column acc_type_source and fill the values cancatenated.

  • Help? Trying to create partition for Windows...

Okay so I'm trying to create a partition for Windows XP and I go to the Boot Camp Assistant and I have it set to 32 GB and I click partition and it says that I have to "repair the disk." So I go to the Disk Utitlity and I tried verifying my Mac HD and it couldn't even verify. Here's the description:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Performing live verification
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume
    Checking Extents Overflow file
    Checking Catalog file
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Incorrect number of thread records
    Checking multi-linked files
    Checking Catalog hierarchy
    Checking Extended Attributes file
    Checking volume bitmap
    Checking volume information
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
Someone please tell me what does this all mean and tell me how to make the error go away

    Hello akl88066
To repair the Macintosh volume, you will need to boot and make the repairs from the install disk as described in the link below!

  • Stuck on Creating Partition Map

I was using the Install disk....the disk utility.....to erase my hard drive and now it is stuck on "Creating Partition Map". What do it do?
I am giving this i-Mac away so I want to make sure the disk is erased. Was it?

No, it sounds like there's been a problem. Do the following:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Do i need to create a back up or a start up disc for a newly bought macbook pro os x 10.8 ?

do i need to create a back up or a start up disc for a newly bought macbook pro os x 10.8 ?

You do not need a startup disc. There is a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive that you can use for repairing or reinstalling the system. Hold down command-R at startup to boot from that system. If the hard drive should die or be replaced, all machines that have shipped with Mac OS X 10.7 or later include the capability to boot into internet recovery mode. If trying to boot into recovery mode fails, the machine will automatically try to boot from a system downloaded from Apple's servers over the internet. (You can also force the machine into internet recovery mode by holding down command-option-R at startup.)
