Do I need to eject external HD every time?

I want to use an external HD to store my photos. If I connect an external drive and leave it turned on, does that mean every time I shut down my computer I need to first eject the external drive? If so, is there a work around other than using a backup program like Time Machine or SuperDuper? (My computer system is complicated; I have multiple computers and I'm already backing up, so no lectures please about backing up....) Thanks!!

If the external HD is turned on and connected to the computer prior to physically unplugging it from the computer you must eject it first. If the external HD is turned on and connected to the computer and you want to shut down the computer you DO NOT need to eject it prior to turning off the computer.

I need to restart my laptop every time problem occurs..if i restart the laptop, sound is working fine..!!..I have no idea why its not coming sound when i first switch on laptop.!every time i need to restart laptop for sound.! one more problem is if i haven't used laptop for 15-20min it goes sleeping mode and when i used back - again facing same problem.!!..Does i need to install any drivers?..Does it require?..Plz help me out..Thank your for your help in advance.!!

Hi,
One thing to check is the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update, select 'View update history' in the left hand pane and then select 'Installed updates' link in the following window.
Locate update KB2962407, right click it and select Uninstall. When done, restart the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Windows Update and select 'Check for updates'. You'll see the update you just uninstalled being offered again - right click and select 'Hide Update'.
When windows has reloaded, you may or may not need to use recovery manager to reinstall your original Audio Driver as detailed in the document on the link below.
Recovery Manager - Windows 8.

Time machine creating new backup for external hd every time it is connected.

Hi.
I have recently gotten a Time Capsule to back up my files.
I want to back up my internal harddrive as well as an external harddrive with master images from aperture.
Theoretically time machine should skip trying to back up the external drive when it is not connected, and make a backup when it is. (I only connect the disk when working with the images)
However, the problem is that every time I connect the external hd to back it up, time machine seems to create a total new backup of the whole drive and not just the changes. It seems to not recognise that it has already backed up the disk before. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I know it is possible, since I have used this system before, but can't quite figure out how to solve the problem.

If the drive is not recognised.. you should see multiple external drives in the backup.. is that in fact what is happening.
What makes you think it is doing a whole new backup??
One factor you may not have considered is that Time Machine does need to do a deep scan of the disk when it has missed more than a few days. A deep scan can take ages over wireless as it will have to actually compare the backup with the files on the disk. Determine what has changed, make up a list of files that need backup and then start and actually do the backup.. this might even take longer than a straight clean backup.
Have you checked the TM log for what it is really doing?? Pondini widget will give you that info. See A1 here.

I have a simple solution.. that will cost you around $40.. use Carbon Copy Cloner.. not Time Machine. It simply handles this kind of thing better.
There are a number of other solutions that you can buy.. 3rd party backup software.. you can even do it manually via rsync.. however.. a tool like CCC which is based on rsync is a heck of lot easier than writing your own backup scripts.

Need to enter WPA key every time i re-connect?

I have a small network of one wired PC, one wireless PC and a wireless laptop. I messed something up while trying to add our new itouch to the network and now, the laptop is asking for the WPA key every time it re-connects. As of right now, the wired PC is also the only one getting on the internet. We are using the WRT54G v.4, running windows XP on all three computers and i'm about to throw them all out the window. Please help. By the way, the laptop has a different IP address then the other computers...is this a problem too? Thanks in advance.

All the computers on your network should have different IP addresses, but they should all be on the same subnet 192.168.1.x . If your computer fails to connect, it may show a 169.254.xxx.xxx address. This address simply means you failed to connect. It comes from Windows, not the router.
First, in the router, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Also, in the non-working computers, temporarily turn off the software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps you make a connection.
To fix the recurrent WPA key entry problem:
In the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. Delete your current network (this will clear any old settings). Reboot computer. Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". Reboot computer. Your computer should connect automatically to your router. If you still have trouble, make sure your computer's software firewall is off.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Also, please note that WPA = "WPA with TKIP", and WPA2 = "WPA with AES".
If you are using WPA2, then note that Windows XP requires a patch to run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=917021 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.

I have a RTF template , in that i need one section i.e one table every time last of the page.
Ex. So currently i am facing issue is some portion of the page coming in first page and rest part is coming in second page , so i need either it should fit in first page or second page lat the last.

1. Create Page footer.
2. Insert the table you needed in the page footer first page. Adjust the footer(moving up) according to the table size.
3. Just select "different first Page" option. This will always show the table in first page.

IN BW 7.0 do we need to run every time the Info Package before DTP process to load the data into target or only one time we need to run the Info package then from that point onwards we need to run DTP process, Please let me know. basically I am planning to create the process chains so I should put Info package before DTP to load the deltas or full load??

Hi,
When you are loading from source system i.e. datasource to target, you will always have to use an infopackage to load to PSA and a subsequent DTP.
When loading for instance from DS to Cube, you only need to schedule a DTP.

I need to reboot my AppleTv every time I use it to get Airplay working

Hello, I hope that someone there can help me! I just got my brand new Apple Tv 2, but every time I would like to play music or whatever with airplay from my Iphone or my Mac Book, I need to restart it.
They are all connected to the same wireless router, but I don't see the airplay icon until I plugo off and plugin again the power cable of the Apple Tv.
It is correctly connected to the wifi, I can use youtube and so on... but the other devices cannot see it...
If I need to reboot it everytime.. I think I will get bored of use it in a couple of days!

Why does the Firefox window needs to be resized manually every time you do something? HELP!

I'm am using a 64-bit version of windows 7.
I installed Firefox (New PC) and when i started using it every-time i clicked on something the browser would appear to freeze. But when i re-size the window by just dragging it out it would "unfreeze" and start working again until i clicked on something.
Posting this problem was a real chore.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling (with many versions) , i have try Waterfox and Nightly but i have been having the same problems.
I have 8gbs of ram and 2gb graphics, i have installed all adobe plugins and silverlight and i don't know what to do?
I don't have this problem with explorer or chrome but i hate them both. HHHEEEELLLLPPPPPPP!

Need help: iTunes deletes apps every time I sync

I have a new 3g iPhone (8GB), and every single time I connect my phone to my computer iTunes does its usual thing by backing up what's on my phone, then promptly deletes everything. Every single time. This is so frustrating.
I had 38 apps this last time, and I am very tired of re-downloading all the apps every time.
I have asked this question in other places, but either get ignored or get smart *** remarks which are both unhelpful and turn me off from Apple products. So far no one has been helpful even in the least. I'm new to Apple products, my iPhone is my very first Apple anything... I admit I don't have a clue what I'm doing sometimes. So please take that into consideration.
One other thing, when iTunes deletes all my apps, it deletes them from iTunes as well. So I have nothing to put back onto my phone. I have to go back into the Apps Store and re-download EVERYTHING. Not fun. I'm tired of this and I only just bought the phone less than 2 weeks ago. Please help. Thanks.

I had a similar problem... then I realized that iTunes somehow lost the location of the actual app files on my computer. Try this:
In iTunes, Open the Applications Tab (if you don't see this, check Edit> Prefrences> General> make sure you have "Applications" checked) click on one of the apps and Get Info (Ctrl+Click/Right-Click).
If iTunes reports that "The Application Could Not Be Used... Would You Like To Locate...?" Click yes and use Finder/Explorer to locat the actual application file stored on your machine (Probabably someplace like ...iTunes/Mobile Applications) and bingo - problem solved.
For some reason, my iTunes was looking in my Temp folder, when the actual files were stored in their normal spot. In stead of moving the files from my phone back to my computer - it would just delete them from my phone. Now that I have relocated the files for itunes, they reappeared om my phone on the next sync.
I hope this helps you remedy your problem.

“Installed’ should now say “Install” which allows you to download OS X Lion.
This assumes you are using the same Apple ID on both computers.
Lion does not get installed on an iPad. It runs iOS.

Need to reopen Adobe Reader every time I restart Safari

When I download a PDF in Safari, I get a dialogue box asking me which program I want to use to to read it. I then find my Adobe Reader program and select that, and things go just fine.
The next time I download a PDF *if I have not closed Safari*, thinks go just fine.
But, if I've exited Safari and later reopened it, I have to go through the same steps each time to read a PDF online in Safari. Open Adobe Reader.
On my other (actually older) Mac I don't have to do this every time. Safari "knows" to use Reader. How due I set that up here? Thank you.

From what you originally described, the problem is symptomatic of having removed the main Adobe application while still leaving the Adobe browser plugin in 'HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/'. Perhaps trashing the plugin from said folder and then reinstalling the software would rectify the issue.
Have you tried trashing Adobe Reader's preference list (.plist), located in '~/Library/Preferences/' or creating a test user account (System Preferences > Accounts > [+]) to investigate the problem further?

So as the title says, I need help with this. I've been trying to find a solution for hours.

Just place it in recovery mode again and continue. After some time the iPod will go out of recovery mode. It can also take a longtime to download the firmware needed for the restore.

Auto mount/eject external drive for time machine backup/restore

I have an Iomega ultramax drive connected via firewire 800 for my Time machine backups.
This drive will automatically spin down after a period of non-use. I like this as it means lower power usage and lower risk of data loss (head crashes etc..).
My problem is, when the drive spins down like this, some file open operations pause until the drive spins up again. I cannot remember exactly which applications I have had the problem with, but I assumed that this was part of the OS. This delay can be up to 5 seconds or so and is really annoying.
Assuming this is not just a specific third party application thing. My suggestion to Apple is to do one or both of the following:
1) Multi thread the file open dialog (process?) so that is comes up instantly, and then adds the drive when it has spun up.
2) Modify time machine so that it can automatically mount/eject the external drive just when doing backups and restores.
Currently I have a bit of a messy work around to this problem where I have a loadd scheduled shell script that runs every hour that mounts the drive, runs time machine to backup and the ejects the drive. It works, but is not perhaps as nice a solution as it could be.
Does anybody else suffer from this problem?

Yes that is correct, the drive spins down and remains mounted.
To be perhaps clearer. The problem is not essentially a time machine problem, it is to do with whatever implements the file open capability that other apps use. In the above sitation, there is always a delay for the drive to spin up when I go to open a file (perhaps five seconds) in other applications. I assume this delay is caused by the file open process waiting until some data is retrieved from the external drive before giving me the option of choosing a file. This delay is annoying, as I do not ever want to open a file from my external drive (this is dedicated to time machine backups) when I am using pages, or any other application other than a time machine restore.
This particular issue is similar (but I suspect nowhere near as bad) as one of my pet hates about windows XP. In windows it appears that the explorer will wait for a response on all its connected drives (hard disks, mounted cds, network drives), so any sort of network connectivity or hardware delay will cause explorer to freeze. As explorer seems to be embedded in most things you do with the OS, this can cause anything or everything to freeze (web browsing, you name it).
In my setup, as I have the external drive totally dedicated to time machine backups, another thing that would fix the problem for me is the suggestion number 2 I suggested where time machine auto mounts for the backup and then ejects after the backup. With the feature, then the external drrive will only ever be mounted for short periods of time (the above problem does not ocurr if the external drive is not mounted), and when it is mounted it will be spinning, so I will never have my file open delay. I would however have a short delay when doing a time machine restore for the mount of the drive, but this is a much rarer event the using file open in all my other apps.
