Not necessarily. You could use the "Create Network" feature of your MBP's built-in AirPort card to provide an Ad-hoc wireless network for local wireless-capable computers to connect to.

i'm not the most computer savvy, so i apologize if i don't know all the terminology. i'll try to explain my problem as best i can...
i have airport express. i'm using it as a base station in my father's office and then attempting to connect wirelessly with my laptop and my brother's laptop. i know the internet itself works because my mother's computer, which connects via ethernet, has internet access. my dad's computer, which is, i guess, the airport administrator station, has internet. his wireless signal is, obviously, fine.
for some reason, though, i cannot connect to the internet on either my laptop or my brother's. both computers have strong wireless signals and SAY they are connected, but when i open safari, i can't connect. i've tried EVERYTHING -- reread the apple support stuff about 100 times. i thought maybe there was a PPPoeP issue, but that doesn't seem to be it... i've done a hard reset of the airport express and that doesn't fix it... i've checked all the network configurations and they seem to be fine... the IP addresses on both laptops begin with "10.0.1."something, which seems to be right... i'm stumped.
my best guess is that there must be settings on my dad's computer that don't recognize the laptops trying to connect.
if anybody has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. if you have any particular places on the apple support page that you think i should look at, just post the link. thanks in advance.
p.s. my dad's computer runs 10.4.5, my brother's laptop same, and my laptop 10.2.6, if that makes any difference.one more thing... my laptop definitely has the capacity to connect wirelessly, as i use it at work with no problem... it just automatically connects to the strongest signal. basically, everything looks right, it shows a strong signal and says i'm connected to the network, but then i can't get online.

Since installing Airport Express wireless connection to other devices keeps being dropped
Our home network consists of my MacBook Pro 15", my wife's quite old Compaq notebook, an Apple TV, and recently, an Airport Express.
The router is one that was provided by our ISP, Alice/O2 in Germany. I think it is made by Siemens but its model name is Alice IAD 4421 WLAN (in case anyone in Germany is reading this.)
My MacBook connects to the WiFi broadcast perfectly every time, as did my wife's Windows laptop until recently. Between our two machines there was a total of one single occasion where the signal dropped, and a restart of the router got it back up and runnning.
The Apple TV was set up without any problems at all, the wireless connection dropped out once over the space of 6 weeks.
About 5 days ago, I bought and installed an Airport Express which has so far served the sole function of providing Airplay to 2.0 speakers in the kitchen, so I just selected 'join network' when setting it up in Airport Utility.
Since it was installed, video playing over Airplay to the Apple TV keeps stopping, with the message 'Apple TV is not connected to the internet', the AE itself suffers from dropouts in audio, (the LED has always stayed solid green) and my wifes notebook can only join the network after she has restarted it.
A restart of the router helps for about an hour, but the problems keep recurring.
Does anyone have any idea of any changes I can make to the AE settings, as it seems to be the cause of the dodgy connections to the other devices?Hello mathias1711. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's double-check your AirPort Express Base Station's (AX) settings for streaming iTunes ...
Perform a "factory default" reset of the AX

To set up AirTunes on the AX, either connect to the AX's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
o Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
o Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
o Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
Music tab
o Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
o Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
o iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked) -

Yes, as we already said, it will do all of this if you have a good wireless signal reaching the bedroom.
Remember that an extender or repeater or whatever you want to call it can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.
The Ethernet signal that the Express delivers will only be as good as the quality of the wireless connection between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.
If you have doubts, make sure that you understand the store's return policy before you buy. -
We have 2 I-phones and 2 mac computers - in our home - how do we survive???

We now have another Mac which is mine - he has the old one - in order for Michael's computer to recognize him - should we trash the I-tunes accounts on the old computer - install I-tunes for him with his apple id - do we need to trash cloud on that computer as well ? Currently his phone whenever he tries to update he always shows my apple id - even though he has his apple id in his phone? - its very confusingObviously it's not something that Apple would suggest doing, but if you want to share 1 iTunes account, I would suggest creating a new admin account on your system, or using another computer. You can authorize an Apple ID on up to 5 computers. To do this open iTunes select Store (from the top menu) and Authorize computer.
If you are worried about getting all the content into another user. There are 2 ways;
1. If all of the content is purchased from the iTunes store, you would want to connect up the iPhone to iTunes (in another user) cancel the sync if it starts automatically, or before connecting up the iPhone launch iTunes and go to (Windows Edit/Preferences .. Mac iTunes/Preferences) go to the Device tab and select 'Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods' .. however this does not always work. Authorize computer in the new user. Once the iPhone is connected and this user account is authorized with your shared Apple ID, go to File/Transfer purchases from iPhone. This will bring over any purchased content.
2. If not all the content is purchased, put all the content onto a flash drive, log into the test user, open iTunes, authorize the computer in this new user account and then bring over all the content. Once this is done, make sure that you can play the purchased content in the new user.
Or you can put only the non-purchased content onto the flash drive, and then do step 1 and 2 to get all your data over.

Airport and ethernet not working other computers are
I have a Mac Mini that I use daily. Today when I tried to get onto the internet the bars for airport in the menu bar were gone and a caution exclamation point was there. I restarted and that did not help. I then plugged in an ethnet cable and refigured the mini for ethernet. that did not work. I know the modem and router are working just fine and so is the ethernet since I have other computers on my home network and they all connect ok. Is the airport and ethernet card connected in that if one goes out so does the other? The mini is 2-1/2 years old. I have a Wii and a satellite box on the same shelf as the mini and they both connect to the internet just fine. is my mini toast?
In system preferences- network do you have show airport status in menu bar checked. To the left in network does airport show up. at the top in nework is it on.

Depends on the speakers, mini headphone to something. The speakers needs to have it own amp, however.

I have this issue, too. The problem with the advice from Saito_Chickara is that Mavericks (I'm on 10.9.2) does not allow you to run AirPort Utility 5.x. So for those of us on Mavericks, what can we do? I have yet to find a solution. This is really frustrating.

AirPort Express wireless connection, when I surf the news sites so I linked to **** pages. And must close the window. If I use my iPhone with Internet sharing the same computer, then I have no problem.
I believe that it is in AirPort Express, and would have to clean it. How do you do that?You need to use the Express in router mode.. I think you are trying to use it in bridge mode.. but you need to give us a lot more details.. screenshots might help more than anything.

I have a MacPro 2008 workstation. It has no Airport/Airport card so I have to use an ethernetcable to connect to my modem. As the MAcpro
is in my office in the attic and the wireless modem is in the basement I have a problem. I wonder if it is possible to use Airport Express to connect to the wireless network? Itshould be like this: in my office I connect the MacPro with AE through an ethernet cable. If I can then get AE to connect (wireless...) to my wireless network I should be ablle to connect my MacPro to internet/wireless network. Is this possible???? To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. -
Hello, I'm trying to connect my new TiVo XL4 box to my home network via an ethernet cable connection to my Airport Express but the TiVo box is not seeing the network. I have a green light emanating from the Airport Express so it is connected. Please advise.
If you have not already done so, I suggest that you temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express that goes to the Tivo box.
Instead, turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet port on the Express. See if you can get an Internet connection on the laptop.
If you still cannot get an Internet connection on the laptop, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working correctly.
Post back on your results. -
I have airport express but it is not recognised by either my macbook pro or my ipod on my wireless network. It does not show in airport utility. Might I not have an airport card? How would I know. Airport utility in my mac says no other devices connected.

If both your MacBook Pro and iPod are unable to "see" the Wi-Fi network provided by the AirPort Express, it is most likely NOT that you are missing an "airport card," but the Express may be the issue instead.
One quick test is to see if either device can "see" other Wi-Fi networks. If they can, then you can definately rule both of them out as the issue.
By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecured Wi-Fi network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Can either device see this network? If not, then I would recommend that you perform a "factory default" reset on the Express, and then, check again. -
Hello, I have Airport Express installed on my PC which runs XP. When I play my library through iTunes after about 2 hours Airport quits and I have to log out and restart my computer - very frustrating. Don't know if it is overheating but if anyone can make any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

MurrayMaybe Mail's message index is corrupt. The following procedure is safe to try. Its only deleterious effect is that windows you left open in Mail at step 1 won't reopen automatically in step 4.
1. Quit Mail.
2. Browse to ~/Library/Mail.
3. Move "Envelope Index" to your desktop.
4. Launch Mail.
Mail will rebuild its index before it opens any windows. It may take a few minutes to rebuild. Be patient!
The new index is likely to be a different size than the old one, usually smaller.
Only the Message Viewer window will open--not any other windows you may have left open when Mail quit.
Be sure your mail folders are there and have their messages. They always are there, but the prudent check anyway.
Be sure you can send and receive mail. This always works, too.
After you have done the above, trash the old Envelope Index that you saved on your desktop. It is never better than the new one, and as time goes on, it becomes more and more out of synch with your mail folders, so you won't want to put it back in Library.
If Mail doesn't crash for a week or two, you probably fixed the problem. If not, you at least freed up some disk space.

I have an Airport Express that connects to my printer. I'd like to add a scanner, and two back up drives (one for use with Time Capsule, another specifically for photographs backed up from Adobe Lightroom.
The printer connects to the Airport Express through a USB hub and is recognized. I cannot get the scanner nor either of the back up drives to be recognized. Is there a way to do it or will I need to rely on a USB hub wired to the USB port of the MacBookPro? If it is possible, can you walk me through the set up for each?

Unfortunately, the USB port on the AirPort Express will only work with a compatible printer.
It will not work with a scanner, copier, or hard drive.
It should be possible to do what you want by connecting a powered USB hub to your Mac and then connecting the devices to the powered hub.
The setup for the scanner and hard drive would be covered by the manfacturers documentation, so providing specific advice for those types of products would be outside the realm of this support area.
But, if you can provide model numbers, it is always possible that another user who is using those products might see this post. -
I am a big fan of both the Airport Extreme and Airport Express. In my work environment, I need to create a good quality single wireless network around 2 large aircraft hangars and some offices at the perimeters. We have a good quality wired Cat5e ethernet network extended between the buildings and offices now. Is this possible and does it seem like a good practical solution? I think that 4 or 5 Airport expresses would easily provide good wireless coverage in the needed areas.
Can multiple AirPort Expresses be connected via ethernet to an AirPort Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?
Yes, this will work just fine as long as any individual Ethernet cable run will not exceed much over 330 feet or about 100 meters.
