It's certainly safe to download software, you just have to be cautious about where you get it from. For example, in the case of VLC, it's perfectly fine if you download it here:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
However, there's a scam site at vlc.org that should be avoided, as it is not related to VLC Media Player. Similarly, although you can download VLC from Softonic, you should avoid doing so, as Softonic was injecting adware into the VLC installer not long ago. Never download from either Softonic or Download.com, as both have been caught red-handed adding their own software to installers without permission from the developers and without informing the users. For an exaple, see:
Boycott Softonic
You should also be aware that Gatekeeper, a technology in Mac OS X 10.7.5 and later, will prevent you from opening some apps. If Gatekeeper, at its default settings, blocks you from opening an app, it's one that you should give some serious thought to not opening at all. However, there are perfectly legit apps that Gatekeeper will not allow, because the developer can't or won't register with Apple and thus can't sign the app. You can force Gatekeeper to open such apps, but should be extremely cautious about doing so, and make sure that the app is truly legit, and that you downloaded it from the right place.

DoI need anti virus or adware/spyware remover for a MacBook Pro
Long time PC user, resently purchased a mac book pro & Loving everything about it.
just curiouse about keeping system clean,
Do I need anti virus or adware/spyware remover, for a MacBook ProYou don't need jack diddly squat.
But if you have PC brethren and don't want to be a typhoid mary, then download the free ClamXav and scan with that.
First account on a Mac is a admin, it's best to run as a Standard user by creating another admin user, loggin into it and turning your first user to a Standard user. Everything works just the same, it's more secure than normal though as Mac's are being attacked, not as much as PC's.
Just a bit more protection, check your Software Updates once in awhile and you should be fine, except for Lion issues and we cant' help those as it's a new OS.
If your on Snow Leopard then stay there for another 6 months at least until the complaints go away here about Lion. -
Are Macs still Anti-virus strong? What software is good with OSX
hi all
I've been a long Mac user and read and heard that Macs are not proned to viruses.
Are Macs still Anti-virus strong? What anti-virus and fraud alert software is good with OSX?
Thanks
Web dudeAt this time there have been no confirmed Mac OS X viruses (subject to the semantic debate about whether the iChat exploit is properly classified as a virus or a trojan horse and not counting the Word macro virus that can affect Office v.X or non-updated copies of Office 2004), very few trojans and no adware or spyware. I therefore do not feel that antivirus or antispyware software is necessary at this time as long as users are careful about what they download from the Internet or accept as attachments via email.
It's never wise to become complacent, though, so security precautions are not wasted. Such security precautions mostly are common sense: don't download and run files from sites you don't know, don't double-click on attachments in emails you aren't expecting and/or from people you don't know, and make sure you password your system and keep that password secure as well as not having your system available and unattended (which also is a precaution against theft). In addition, it's possible for someone to inadvertently forward a Windows virus or worm to a PC user though you'd have to do it manually and said Windows malware cannot infect the Mac.

If you do decide you wish to run antivirus software, I think that the donationware clamXav should be more than enough provided you remember to scan your system from time to time.
If you are running Windows on your system, either via BootCamp, Parallels Workstation or another solution, then that copy of Windows is subject to all the myriad exploits common to the Windows world, so you need to take full precautions, including running both antivirus and antispyware software. -
Stopping anti-virus and anti-malware scans from scanning diasabled user files?
Using Windows Server 2008
If I only disable old user profiles, does anti-virus and anti-malware still scan their profiles and all files contained there within? Is this something that will happen regardless of the old users status and during a "whole computer" scan?
And if so, are computer resources still being used for these old profiles?
Thanks!Hi LaEmperor,
From my experience with different AV softwares, I can say that they continue scanning them as part of the filesystem, despite of being disabled.
I am not sure about your question for the resources, but I´ll give two shots:
1. From the system perspective: basically affects the space that the files from that profile are using. The leave also some information on the Registry hive, on .USERS\ but unless it is a large numbre, I will not be concerned.
2. From the Antivirus perpective: Well, as usual, Disk I/O, RAM, CPU, etc...; so as much as disabled profiles, as much they will add to the usual amount of resource comsumption.
Hope you find this informative. -

Great. Then problems with the SDD itself are far less likely.
Yosemite installs fine and I can run normally.
Good. then your Yosemite Installer is not damaged, and your SSD is probably good.
As soon as I put it into the internal the Yosemite install just never finishes, time keeps restarting.
I can see the SSD i can copy files but I can't install Yosemite. what do think I can do??
Then there is a problem with that setup. If you have installed onto it as an external, it is unlikely to be a Drive format problem. But to give yourself the best possible outcomes, use Disk Utility to erase the SSD before the Install.
Be methodical. Use a process of elimination. What can you trust, and what are you not sure of?
It still could be a marginal Drive cable. ifixit and other sellers can sell you a new cable for very little money. -
I've installed windows 7 with the help of bootcamp on my macbook pro 2011.
Please help me how to install mac drivers for windows7 64 bit???You either download drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant and save to USB FAT disk, or you insert and use 10.6.x OS X DVD when in Windows and install and run the SETUP from there.

Step 4: Install the Boot Camp Drivers for Windows
After installing Windows, install Mac-specific drivers and other software for Windows using your Mac OS X installation disc. The Mac OS X disc installs drivers to support Mac components, including AirPort,built-in iSight camera, the Apple Remote, the trackpad on a portable Mac, and thefunction keys on an Apple keyboard.
The Mac OS X disc also installs the Boot Camp control panel for Windows and theApple Boot Camp system tray item.
To install the Boot Camp drivers:
1 Eject the Windows installation disc.
2 Insert the Mac OS X disc. If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
3 Follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
Windows that appear only briefly during the installation don’t require your input.
If nothing appears to be happening, there may be a hidden window that you mustrespond to. Check the taskbar and look behind open windows.
Important: Do not click the Cancel button in any of the installer dialogs.
4 After your computer restarts, follow the instructions in the Found New Hardware Wizard to update your software drivers (Windows XP only).
5 Follow the instructions for any other wizards that appear.
6 Check for updated Boot Camp drivers by using Apple Software Update or going to www.apple.com/support/bootcamp.
If You Have Problems Installing the Device Drivers
If it appears that the Boot Camp drivers weren’t successfully installed, try repairing them.
To repair Boot Camp drivers:
1 Start up your computer in Windows.
2 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
3 If the installer doesn’t start automatically, browse the disc using Windows Explorerand double-click the setup.exe file in the Boot Camp directory.
4 Click Repair and follow the onscreen instructions.
If a message appears that says the software you’re installing has not passed Windows Logo testing, click Continue Anyway.
If you need to reinstall specific drivers, you can install one driver at a time. For example,if your built-in iSight camera isn’t working, you can reinstall just the iSight driver.
Individual drivers are in the Drivers folder on the Mac OS X installation disc. -

I have been trying to update my software in my macbook pro, but every time I go through the motions of updating/restarting my computer nothing happens and it still shows I need a software update. Anyone know why this is happening?
How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?
Check out the following & do the necessary:
Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
Try SU again.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius. -
What is the best antivirus software for a Macbook Pro...I recently received a message from Google that someone made an attempt to hack into my mail account and I needed to change my PW and verify myself as the user. The message suggested that I run a virus scan to check for sny malware or other types of viruses. I do not have any software for this and up until now have not had a problem....any help is appreciated. I would like a simple but effective solution!
It's worth noting that if your Gmail has been hacked, it would likely have nothing to do with your MacBook. Hacking web based email is fairly common and it doesn't require any access to your machine whatsoever. In the same way that you can simply go to the Gmail webpage through any browser, any hacker can use the same method. It doesn't mean your machine has been compromised in any way (and it has likely not been). I have never received an email from Google of this nature. I have received notifications when someone has attempted to create an account with my name in which they basically say that there is no action required if you're the rightful owner.

Can I install a 1TB Hard Drive into a late 2007 17" MacBook Pro?
Can I install a 1TB Hard Drive into a late 2007 17" MacBook Pro currently running a 160 GB Hard Drive?
It depends upon exactly what you want to do with your Mac. My old Late 2007 17" MacBook Pro only has 4GB RAM and it works fine. It is a little slow if I am doing anything involving heavy computing (rendering video, compiling programs, etc.) but it works just fine. In most cases, the increased RAM will help performance, but the cost can be fairly high with an older machine like you have.

I updated the latest version of iOS software on my Macbook Pro and now when I try to open up iPhoto it says that I need to update the latest version. But when I go to update on iTunes, it says the latest version is unavailable to the U.S. I wouldn't mind leaving it be but I can't access any of my photos. What do I do?

iOS is on iPhones and iPads.
Are you using an iPhone or iPad? -
I have a MS Office for Mac CD, how do I install the software onto my MacBook Pro (Retina Display)? It does not have a CD drive.
If all else fails, try this. i used to do it all the time before. might or might not work with the new office.
if you have access to another computer with a cd/dvd rom, copy the entire contents of the cd on a thumb drive.
insert the thumb drive in your MB and do the install from there.
However, if you have the newer version of MS Office, Bandit's suggestion is much better. -
Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro?
Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro using Bootcamp? Before today, I would have never even asked this question due to the large number of users who continue to use Windows 7 in the PC world! However, there seems to be two conflicting links on the Apple site.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3986
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
From the first link, there is a statement as follows: Mac Pro (Late 2013) only supports Windows 8 (64-bit).
From the second link, the table (under MacBook Pro) clearly states that the Retina, 13 inch, late 2013 edition supports BOTH Windows 8 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.
So the above information is conflicting; and as a result, I am confused! Thanks for any responses. As far as I am aware your computer supports Win 7 and Win 8 - 64-bit.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7
or Windows 8. For Boot Camp 4.0 and above you can only use
Windows 7 or later. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
with OS X.
3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows. The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive. -
Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011?
Can I install windows 7 on a second internal drive on a macbook pro 2011? I have 2 500 gb. SSD drives in my 2011 MacBook Pro. My plan was to install windows 7 on the 2nd drive. I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives. Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this. So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?
Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

I have just upgraded to the new OS X V. 10.10.3 but cannot access my iCloud Drive documents using the resident Pages and Numbers software on my MacBook Pro. Help is needed to access those documents using the resident software on my MacBook Pro rather than the Beta software on iCloud.com.
I have iCloud Drive set on the Finder sidebar and use that to open the Numbers Spreadsheet on iCloud.
