You do not need any software installed for protection from virus.
Install all System, Applications and Security updates released by Apple.

  • Upgraded to Firefox 8 and rebooted but when trying to start FF get message that reboot is require to complete installation; same message if I try to re-install or uninstall FF. Writing this using Google Chrome.

Upgrade to FF 8 (from 3.6) appeared to go smoothly, as did reboot, on Acer desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium. But I get "reboot required to complete FF installation" every time I try to start FF. Tried to uninstall FF using Control Panel uninstall and also using the uninstall in my Mozilla folder--get same "reboot required" message. Tried to reinstall FF--same message. In short, FF totally inoperable--and I'm starting to like Google Chrome.

    Delete the files in:
    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox)
(The above is for a windows installation - a Mac installation stores its files in /Applications/Firefox.app <br />
To open one of these folders in OSX, Ctrl-click it and select Show Package Contents. )
Download a fresh copy of Firefox for installation.
Uninstall your current Firefox version before installing but don't remove your profile data when you uninstall Firefox (do not select to remove personal data) or you will lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder. Remove the program folder for Firefox as well.
Do a clean reinstall as an administrator. See:

  • Do I need to install an antivirus program on my new MBP?

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro.  I see that Symantec has a free Norton antivirus app for the Mac OS; do I need to install an antivirus program, or does my operating system come with one already installed?
    Thanks.

I'm not disagreeing with you by any means, but why wouldn't you recommend Norton? I've read tons of reviews and they say that it is competent and I'm planning to get it. For my PC [I've never had Antivirus on my current 2009 MBP] I've used Kapersky.
Just curious, as Mac is getting somne popularity so viruses are bound to pop up [more often] for Mac in the future, and I'm trying to future proof my Mac for at least 3-4 years.

  • Do I need to install virus protection software on my MacBook Air?

Do I need to install virus protection software on my MacBook Air?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You do not need to install additional security software. OS X already comes with security software to keep your Mac safe. See > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
However, you should keep OS X and all your applications updated, and do not visit strange websites. Also, be careful with public networks, where your Mac is more vulnerable.

Probably far too old to register. Sounds like a bug, stopping the "never" selection from working. You may be stuck with it.

  • It is should be installed an antivirus software for iMac product?

    Hi dear Apple..
I would like to ask about an antivirus software for iMac product. It is should be installed for virus protection, for example Kaspersky Antivirus?
    Thanks..

OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Upgrade to a newer version of OS X as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.

  • Is it necessary to install an antivirus software on Mac OS?

I am using Mac OS. Do I need antivirus software to protect my OS?
    Thx.

I have already read your malware guide Thomas, i believe many users will find it highly informative.
Like you point out though, you have little expertise in Cyber Security.
I commend the fact that you take such time in order to contribute to the Apple community.
However, none of the information I have contributed is in any way inaccurate.
Like I said, there are good antivirus programs which have had definitions updated to detect both of the recently identified Trojans. Something Apple has yet to do for 'DevilRobber' .
I love Apple. I enjoy the fact that OSX, bsd, and Linux are inherently more secure than Windows architecture.
And I agree entirely that the majority of malware can be avoided with user education, and changing of behavior.
I wish I could agree that an antivirus application is also unnecessary, however I understand the landscape to be ceaselessly changing, as no doubt you yourself would agree.
There is simply too much money involved not to target Macintosh systems, let alone the likes of Intelligence Support Systems, and SigInt.
I will do what I can to protect my systems, and you can do as you deem necessary.
I in no way intend to do a disservice to the community, nor am I intent on arguing with other users who share my passion for Apple Computers. I wont use terms like 'stupid or oxymoron' just as I hope that other users will refrain from such. Let us agree to disagree, and encourage each other to share their opinions in the forums!

  • Does solaris cluster 3.3 need  to install veritas vxvm software?

    hello buddy
I read the document for solaris cluster 3.3 , and see it need to install veritas vxvm.
why need veritas vxvm if I have solaris cluster ?
    Thanks

You need to use either Solaris Volume Manager, or Veritas Volume Manager. With clustering you need a disk manager that is cluster aware, iow, it needs to know that one disk can be accessed by more than one server at a time.
Have a look at chapter 3 in the Cluster installation manual for the steps to use Solaris Volume Manager. It's iportant to use the /dev/did disk names

  • I Opened A Strange Attachment, Do I need To Install Anti Virus Software?

I have Yahoo Mail and recently received some emails from myself with strange attachments. Similar emails were sent to random contacts in my Yahoo contact list. I did not send these emails. When I changed my email password, these emails stopped. However, I'm worried my iMac G5 (OS 10.6.4) has a virus because I opened one of the attachments. Also, could a worm virus on my IMac have caused these emails? Yahoo advised me to run anti-virus software. Do I need to run anti-virus software and if so, which one? I've been reading online that anti virus software can cause more harm than good and make your mac "buggy," whatever that means.

    P NewYork wrote:

Yes, you read right! There are no known viruses that attack OS X and other exploits are very rare.
It sounds like your email address is being spoofed.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoofing_attack
This means that infected PC is going through its contact list and sending spoofed as that address.
There's nothing you can do but alert your PC friends.
EDIT: Are these emails actually being sent by your Mac? Check in Sent mail folder?
If you feel you MUST run AV software to prove you have nothing , do a scan with ClamXav a mac friendly freeware app.

  • When I try to use Google Chrome with FireFox installed my computer slows down and also crashes. How can I use both together?

I have tried several times to use Firefox and Google Chrome on my computer at the same time. When I do the computer runs slow, page scrolling is erratic, and occasionally it will crash. If I uninstall Chrome the computer returns to normal. How can I fix this issue?

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).

You can do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br>
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br>
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
