Do i need to install tiger or can i go later version

Hello.
I bought a 2nd hand mac book (late 2006, MA700LL/A) model, the OS is currently running 10.6.8 but i'm having issues with applications not running (Itunes won't sync with iphone or downloads apps, just freezes), as it came with a lot of junk installed from the previous owner I would like to format the disk and start again from scratch.
I don't have any disks for this mac so my question is this. when this mac was made it came with tiger installed (or so it says on all of the sites i've looked), do i need to purchase the tiger DVD's or can i just jump ahead and install say Lion.
thank you.

If you saved your Lion download as I suggested, then you can make a bootable flash drive:
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
    installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
  a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
  b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
  c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
      the process has completed.
  d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
  e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
  f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
     drive size.
3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
  a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
  b. Open Disk Utility.
  c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
  d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
  f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
  g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.

  • How to install Windows on MAC? (Can't see the check box "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version" on Boot Camp Assistant)

I want to install Windows 7 on my MBP mid 2012 but in Boot Camp does not appear the check box: "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version". I continued with making the USB bootable with Windows 7 but then when I restart and boot with the USB I still can't install Windows because then I receive an error: ""Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style."
From OS with Boot Camp I didn't manage to make a partition for Windows instead I made one with Disk Utility (formated FAT).
After booting from USB that partition was also formated into NTFS necessary for Windows. Still the same error.
Any idea how to install Windows on my MAC?

  • Where on this site can i download later version of itunes?

if anyone can give me a link it would be greatly appreciated, i think if i download a later version it might solve my problem but, i can't find it.

Why would you need version 7.0?
If you need 7.0 and describe it as a later version, then your iTunes is way out of date. What is it that you think stops you from using the latest version, which is what Apple always recommend?

  • Need help installing Tiger 4.6!

I have a powerbook G4 that runs OSX 2.8 currently, I'm trying to upgrade to Tiger, but whenever I restart to begin the installation, it boots up to a plain blue screen. I have more that enough space and specs, any reason why it wont boot up? Thanks

First, you must have at least 256 MBs of installed RAM to run Tiger. Second, you need a retail Tiger installation DVD. If you have a disc with a gray label then you have an OEM version intended for use on the machine with which it came. The retail Tiger DVD has a black label with a large gray "X". You will also need 6-8 GBs of free space during installation. This is in addition to maintaining a minimum of 8-10 GBs of free space for normal operation of OS X.
Be sure you repair the hard drive and permissions before attempting to upgrade your current system. You should also update all your third-party software for Tiger compatibility. This includes applications, preference panes, startupitems, login items, contextual menu items, etc. If you cannot find upgrades then remove them before installing Tiger.
I highly recommend you not upgrade 10.2.x. Instead I suggest you install Tiger using the Archive and Install option. You can select the option to preserve users and network preferences.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Need to install Tiger on to different computers

I bought a used iBook G3 with Panther and a used PowerPC G4 that I need reinstall Tiger but neither had software. What is the problem with me buying a retail Tiger and using it to install tiger on both when Apple no longer sales the software?
Is there something that prevents the installation on the second computer?
I have tried to by a Family Pack on eBay, but having won a bid, yet.

It's still licensed whether they sell it anymore or not, but a Family pack will do nicely.
See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...

  • Need help installing Tiger OS safely

    Hi
I have a G4 Quicksilver currently running on OS 10.1.5 and just bought Tiger. I want to install it but don't want to risk losing any of my applications. What are the risks of installing Tiger? I figure I should back everything up on my external hard drive, but I don't know how to back up my applications (photoshop, illstrator etc...). Can someone help me with this process?
    Thanks!

With such a major upgrade, you will probably want to do a fresh install of Tiger, then install application, not try to save old applications. First be sure you have the latest versions (Tiger compatible) of all your applications.

  • Need help installing tiger

    Hello all,
I recently purchased Tiger for my Imac. I'm currently running Panther 10.3.9
When I load the installation disk, it's automatically ejected after about 30 seconds or so. My computer meets all of the requirements to install tiger and have a superdrive. I loaded various cds, which played. I also loaded some DVDs, which did not load.
I've tried various troubleshooting tactics like upgrading the firmware. I also attempted to load the disk while restarting the computer and holding down the "c" key. This did not work either. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Andrew,
I recently purchased Tiger for my Imac.
Is your Tiger DVD a grey colour or a black colour with a big X across it?
The grey ones are machine specific and will only work on the model of Mac they were originally shipped with.

  • Need to install Tiger on my iMac and computer won't boot

I've recently had to wipe and format my Intel based iMac (20" intel based iMac, Emc 2133) and am unable to install Tiger from any of the disks. The computer will not boot past the grey screen at start up. The optical drive has just been replaced and is working correctly and pressing C at start up while disk is in is not working either.
    Any suggestions?

So what exactly happens when you put your install disc in and try and boot up holding the "C" key? I know you said it doesn't work, but does it just bring you back to the gray screen?
What happens if you boot while holding the Option key? Does it at least get you to the startup manager (aka boot picker)? It should at least do that, since that operates from firmware and should come up regardless of what shape the hard drive is in.
It is difficult to pinpoint the issue here but you might even be looking at a bad logic board judging by firmware operations not working.

  • CanNOT install Tiger on New Quad. What version of Logic is most reliable??

I've read all the posts to death, and fully intended to install Tiger onto my new Quad, but that is not an option. so... It came with Leopard 10.5.1. I need to know what exact configuration with the most stability I should go with. i.e. -- do i stay at 10.5.1 or go to 10.5.2 --- i have every upgrade of Logic since 6.0, so do I go with 7.2.3, or Logic 8.??, or something else.
I am interested in what is the 'lesser evil' of a combination here and trying to stay off as much issues as some of you more unfortunate souls.
and lastly, in this equation what other update should i definitely do, or avoid like the plague...i.e. pro kit, pro apps, security update blah, blah, blah...I do video editing as well, so i wonder if my Final Cut Studio 2 will even come in to play in the equation.
I am really sorry for all who have been screwed over by all these completely evil 'bugs' and such. i really welcome any of your input if it means it can lessen the blow on my own studio.
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

    o.k.
i have come to believe that you have been completely misguided. there is absolutely no way my new Quad or Macbkpro will run tiger 10.4.11...no way!!!
i took both an internal, and an external drive to my old Tiger running G5. Did fresh installs of tiger on both. then did combo upgrades up to 10.4.4 ( cause it would not do any higher and do the intel version from the G5 ). I brought the drives back to my new Laptop and Quad. updated the software on them up to 10.4.11 intel combo. stuck one drive into the quad, and left one for an external scenerio. I have booted, rebooted, target disc mode, chose boot drive mode, prayed, cried, switched start up drive... even switched the roles and tried to do it with the MacBkPro, also. what i get, from either one, every single time, is the following....
the great black curtain of death saying to do a hard reboot, and code at the top saying stuff like
"panic(cpu 0 caller 0x003abd33) : Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI" . "
then some stuff about... debugger called...<panic>...backtrace, format - frame : return address (4 potential args on stack)....jibberish code junk.... then Kernal Version: Darwin kernal version 8.11.1...
so, please, be my kind Italian friend and tell me, are you SUUURE this is possible??? if you know a special secret to accomplishing this, you can reach me through my site. ( i don't want to do or say anything on the forums that would be wrong or against the rules... really...i respect them...I also respect my tons of paying clients that are ready to find other places to give my business...)
and lastly, if indeed I am "stuck" with Leopard on my Quad, in regards to Logic, what combination do I go with in juggling 10.5.1 vs. 10.5.2, vs. Logic 7.2.3 vs. Logic 8.?, then what other random stuff should I do or avoid, i.e. ProApps updates, Pro-kit, certain security updates, etc...
    Thank you,
    jeremy

  • Need help installing Tiger 10,4

    Hello Everyone,
I just received a full install of tiger 10.4 its on dvd one disc, i got a wired keyboard and mouse, my screen right now is blue i tried shutting down and restarting holding the C key down, but nothing seems to happen, the HD is new and nothing on it, its an imac g4 1.250 20" flat panel.
    HELP PLEASE!!
    keyro35

    Hi shumi35G,
assuming you do have a retail version of 10.4 (which is not very likely, since most offers on eBay are hardware specific disk sets) you still cannot upgrade directly from 10.1.x to 10.4.x.
You will have to either reformat the drive (recommended) or do an Erase&Install. In both cases all your data will be lost, so make sure you have a complete backup!!! If your computer is a dual-boot model (can boot into OS 9 natively) I suggest to reformat the drive using the OS 9 install CDs. By reformatting the drive with the OS 9 disk you are safe that all required OS 9 hardware drivers will be installed properly.
    1. Boot up from the OS 9 install CD and reformat the drive as Apple Extended (HFS+).
    2. Install OS 9 and update it to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
    3. Confirm you can boot into OS 9
    4. Upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades
    5. Insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down th c-key.
    6. Once the installer has started select "disk utility" from the menu.
    7. Select "repair OS 9 privilegies" from the menu.
    8. Repair the disk.
    9. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install (do not select Erase&Install because this would erase your OS 9)
    10. After the reboot Repair permissions!
    11. Download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC).
    12. Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).
In case your computer cannot boot into OS 9 natively do this:
    1. Upgrade your firmware: Firmware Upgrades
    2. Insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down th c-key.
    3. Once the installer has started select "disk utility" from the menu.
    4. Reformat the hard disk.
    5. Quit disk utility and proceed with a normal install
    6. After the reboot Repair permissions!
    7. Download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC).
    8. Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).
    Good luck!

  • Can anyone help? installed tiger, now can't open address book

when i click on the icon, it opens up for about a nanosecond and then disappears. so it's useless. anyone else experience this and know what to do? thanks! --nancy

    Welcome to the discussions, Nancy.
    Two things to try:
Go to the applications folder and try to run Address Book from there (it will likely be the first application in the list)
Make a new user, log on as the new user, and try AB there.
    Let us know the results.

  • BBC iplayer says Adobe Air needs updating: Adobe Air will not install, but says I have a later version already on my PC!

Use Firefox. Have BBC iPlayer which will not load, saying I need a newer version of Adobe Air: when trying to instal Adobe Air, get message saying I already have a more recent version. It worked when I was using IE, but not since changing to Firefox.

    Hi there,
stumbled on this conversation after having problems myself.
After lots of trial and error, I was finally able to install iPlayer on my MacBook Pro.
Firstly remove Adobe Air (Applications, Utilities, Adobe Air Uninstaller).
Reboot (not sure if it is needed but it is what I did).
Download Adobe Air 2.5 from http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/853/cpsid_85304.html
Then retry installing iPlayer from the BBC webpage. I ignored the prompt from Adobe Air to upgrade to the latest version (3.1).
