Do i need to jailbreak my phone just to update from the latest software?

I purchase 4S from retails shop here in UAE my network carrier is Etisalat when i connect to Wifi it shows update software i want to update it but i have a doubt. a doubt maybe it will hang or it will not work do i need to jailbreak the phone or no need
