Do I need to keep older Final Cut docs and disks?

I'm trying to find out if I need to keep all of the documentation and disks to my licensed and registered Final Cut software. I've currently got Final Cut X installed. But, I have all manuals and install disks going back to Final Cut 1.0. I'm moving and would really like to not have take all the cumbersome Final Cut boxes with me. If I can get rid of them, how do I dispose of or recycle the paper and disks? Any chance I'll need any of it if I want to upgrade in the future?

Here's the section of the SLA on transfering to another owner: (from http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/finalcutstudio2.pdf)
"3. Transfer. You may not rent, lease, lend, sell, redistribute or sublicense the Apple Software. You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. All components of the Apple Software are provided as part of a bundle and may not be separated from the bundle and distributed as standalone applications.
Updates: If an Apple Software update completely replaces (full install) a previously licensed version of the Apple Software, you may not use both versions of the Apple Software at the same time nor may you transfer them separately.
NFR (Not for Resale) Copies: Notwithstanding other sections of this License, Apple Software labeled or otherwise provided to you on a promotional basis may only be used for demonstration, testing and evaluation purposes and may not be resold or transferred.
Academic Copies: If the Apple Software package has an academic label or if you acquired the Apple Software at an academic discount, you must be an Eligible Educational End User to use the Apple Software. "Eligible Educational End Users" means students, faculty, staff and administration attending and/or working at an educational institutional facility (i.e., college campus, public or private K-12 schools)."

  • I need a new license of final cut. Can I buy Final Cut X and use that serial on an older version of Final Cut?

I work in a small studio and we hired a new editor. We are staying on an older version of Final Cut Studio and need a new license/serial so we can run it on the new machine without having the 'protection error' over the network.
We CANNOT upgrade all of the machines at this time - we are in the middle of a few projects and need to keep the workflow going smoothly.
If we purchase the newest version of Final Cut Studio can we use the license on our old product and wait to install the new one until we can upgrade all of the machines at the same time? we're still on studio 6.
    Thank you!

    >If we purchase the newest version of Final Cut Studio
The newest version of Final Cut Studio was FCS 3 (aka FCS 2009) which contained FCP 7.  It has been discontinued by Apple and recalled from retailers.  If you can still find a legitimate copy to purchase, you can only use the serial number for that version.  Serial numbers from other versions will not work.

  • Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?

    Hello:
Just today, I was working on a Mac system that does not have any of the applications that I would have expected to need to have installed in order to do more than just decompress movie files compressed with Apple ProRes 422.
I was expecting to have to install Final Cut Studio 3, Final Cut Pro X, Compressor 4, and/or QuickTime 7 with the QuickTime Pro key; however, none of those applications are installed and I am able to create custom QuickTime Apple Pro Res422 Sequences in Premiere Pro as well as export using Apple ProRes 422.  After Effects and Adobe Media Encoder also show all the Apple ProRes variations.
Does CC 2014 eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422?  Is it something happening on the OS or QuickTime level that would affect CC or CS6 in the same way?
I've done a web search, but haven't really come up with anything other than older articles about needing to have FCP installed (and I typically work on systems with Final Cut Studio 3 installed as well as CS6, CC, or CC 2014).  If more detailed information is available, it would be great to be able to read up on it.
The system is a 21.5-inch iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.5, QuickTime Player 10.2, and Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 (8.0.0 - I know an update is available for PrPro, but it's not my system to make that change).
    Thanks in advance,
    Warren Heaton

    Hi Emil:
I use ProRes all the time as well, but I have Final Cut Studio on my workstations.
I had not come across MindPower009's YouTube video.  That explains how ProRes could be showing up without FCP or Compressor.
So, the answer to my question would be, "No, CC 2014 does not eliminate the need to have Final Cut Pro and/or Compressor installed to access Apple ProRes 422; however, if you are willing to be in violation Apple's terms of use, you can install the ProRes codecs anyway."
Even though MindPower009's YouTube video comments claim "FREE and LEGAL", it's clear from both the Apple download page and the ProRes codecs installer that Apple expects you to own at least one of their applications.
    Thanks again for the link!

If version 4 is an upgrade only, you will have to have the serial number of the 3.5 full version.
If you can't find it try contacting Apple with your proff of purchase, they may be able to help.

  • Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap). Any ideas?

Are there any good DVD authoring programs for Mac now that Apple has discontinued DVD Studio and iDVD? I need to make DVDs that have interactive menus and such (Final Cut X and Compressor 4's DVD option is a little cheap and doesn't provide any kind of professional DVD authoring). Any ideas?

This comes up a lot these days.
Practically speaking, there are really four options for the Mac platform: Toast (<$100),  Adobe Premier Productiom ($1,600 to buy or $50/month to rent),  find a copy of Final Cut Studio from 3rd  party (+/- $1,000 new) or a boxed edition of iLife to get iDVD ($50 - $90 on Amazon new).
The other question everyone has is how many OS versions before iDVD or FCS breaks? No one knows, but Apple has said they're no longer supporting these legacy apps. Of course, no one is mandated to upgrade to a new OS unless they buy a new computer. So if it works on a system, stay with it as long as it makes sense.
    Good luck.

  • Can I migrate an iMovie project to final cut pro and keep the edits intact?

can I migrate an iMovie project to final cut pro and keep the edits intact? It may be a solution to my apparently corrupted iMovie

    The manual tells ..
    http://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.1/?lang=en#ver41812c7c
keep in mind: just the 'plain cuts', not the eye-candy iMovie offers, wil be transfered.
    unfortunately it says ...:
You initiate the process from within iMovie. The project file and the media used in the project are copied to your Final Cut Pro library.
For more information, see iMovie Help.
so, if your iM doesn't work anymore, you can not transfer.
plus, my personal opinion!, I would start from scratch in FCPx...
What issues in iM do you expect FCPX to solve,...?

    Final Cut Pro is an app for Macs and not an iOS app for an iPhone or iPad. You will need the link for Apple software volume licensing for education. That information and the phone number to call is available on this webpage;

First, did you use Setup or Migration Assistant? That can happen when coming from a PowerMac or sometimes even from another (Intel) Mac.
Second, wait for the next version of Final Cut due very soon to ship (may have to wait for the ".1" of course to clean up any early issues.

There are a few apps that are better.  I think you can run multiple instances of Handbrake for one.

  • I need help accessing my final cut movie.

Okay, so I've been at college working on a final cut project, and I was almost done, but then I came home.
I made the file in the latest final cut express, and now I'm trying to open the file in final cut pro 4.5
However, when I try to open it, it inexplicably closes final cut pro.
    Any suggestions?
Is there some program like a final cut reader or something I could use just to export the file?
    thanks.

Can Final Cut Express export to XML? This is your best route if this is possible.
Also bear in mind that FCP 4.5 is very old and some of the features you are using with FCE may not be available.

  • Student Help advice! what is best iMac model for Final Cut Pro and logic pro

    Hi
I am currently looking into getting a iMac, but is toggling to device if I need a 27inch or a 21inch(top model),which will be used for Final Cut Pro and logic
There is a lot of money being invested iMac, and I really not want to be stu k with a computer that not going to keep up with the amount of work load in the future.
The specs that I have on mine are..
    21inch
    Upgrades include
    Sdd drive 512gb
    Intel core i7
    16gb of ram
    Or
    27 inch
    Upgrades
    Fusion drive or sdd 250gb
    Intel core i7
    (Possible graphic card) NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5 [+ £105.60]
(Ram is way to expensive so will buy from second party)
Anyone who has brought a iMac for final cut or logic what would you likely buy?..Am really stuck on the hard drives between the 27inch fusion and 512gb on the 21inch
    My budget is £1900
My fear is that the 21inch top model's graphic card may not be good enough for advance editing on Final Cut Pro In the future when I start to get more deep into editing..logic really only needs 8gb to run smoothly..buts its the final cut specs that am having problems deciding. I know iMacs are not future proof or technology lasts for that matter, but I do expect to have it run good for a number of years before I upgrade again.
If anyone can give me some advice, or even tell me about there set up they have for media work please let me know.

All kinds of things affect system & HD performance, I can't tell you why your 4 year old Mac is slow.  Just because your old Mac is slow doesn't mean that a new iMac will be equally slow.
You are correct about the issue with the smaller fusion drives.  It's one of the reasons I am not high on recommending them.  Everyone thinks they want power & performance but don't understand the gap between marketing and real life performance.  The 1TB fusion drive however should give you a good combination of rapid access and sizeable storage capacity.
I have used external FW800 / 7200rpm drives for years and have never had a problem with any of them.  I consider them very reliable but admittedly I DO NOT use consumer drives like the WD MyBook that the big-box stores sell.   For the most part I assemble my own with OWC Mercury Elite enclosures.  In the past few years I have centered on WD Caviar Black and WD Scorpio Black drives.  I also have some Seagate Barracuda 7200.xx drives.  They all perform excellently and reliably.
Pls. refer to my earlier post for what i recommended to you.

Now, when the one hour long movie is ready the video seem to paus every 5 sec (only for half a second). It does it all the way through the movies.
What is wrong? All the sudden.

    We need info, info, info!
    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

  • Why Final Cut X and Not Premier Pro?

I've been using FCP for many years and was shocked when FCX first came out. Thought it was just iMovie with a few more features. I know there was a big update to FCX which added a bunch of features that pros need (why Apple would didn't just wait 6 mos. and release THAT version first is beyond me, but that's another thread in itself).
I can't use FCP 6 forever, but I'm nervous to make the leap. I have to say, Premiere Pro CS6 is tantalizing and is fully supported people seem to love it.
I make :30 sec. TV/web spots mainly, with the occasional longer project thrown in. We already have CS5 so upgrading wouldn't be too bad.
Why Final Cut X and Not Premier Pro?
    Any advice is appreciated.

first of all: I'm no pro - my personal enthusiasm about FCPX doesn't help you
maybe some 'real world' examples from professionals using FCPX:
    http://fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/906-making-a-music-video-shot-on-red-composited -in-after-effects-graded-in-resolve-and-edited-in-final-cut-pro-x
    http://fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/784-final-cut-pro-x-real-world-use-on-the- iditarod-sled-dog-race
or this example from the Ripple Team:
    http://fcp.co/final-cut-pro/tutorials/905-lightning-fast-organisation-of-media-i n-final-cut-pro-x
... to illustrate the very different GUI and workflows of FCPX.
it's probably crucial when youre used to the 'old' (no offense ment!) metaphores.
I assume a perfect integration of Premiere with AE and PS ... (which would completely overstrain an hobbyist like me - way too much options ) - FCPX is in its actual version more an island (even no integration with/to Motion5)
best advice was already given twice:
test on your own - keep in  mind: it is very different ....

  • I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am

I am traveling with my macbook pro and I forgot to install final cut express and quicktime pro before I left. How can I in a way download them for free on my laptop from where I am? I need them and don't want naturally to buy them again!!!
    Thank you

Assuming you purchased QT Pro, you can always download it again at no extra charge by logging in to your Apple account.
Regarding FCE, there is no way to download & install the product.  You need an original FCE install disk and your FCE serial number.
Final Cut Pro X (aka FCPX) can be purchased & downloaded from the App Store.

  • I have been creating a film on Final Cut Express and half of my film has disappeared- what can I do to retrieve it back!?

I have been creating a film on Final Cut Express and half of my film has disappeared! What can I do to retrieve it?! Furthermore, command Z doesn't appear to be working! Any help would be much appreciated!

Check the capture/scratch disc to make sure the media is still there.  If it isn't your hard drive may be going bad.  If it is, then you may have inadvertently cut part of the video from the Timeline or deleted it from the Browser.
As for the Command z issue, see how many levels of undo you have set in FCE preferences.  Also keep in mind that Command z will not work if you close the project and reopen it.
