Do I need to keep "XCopy" on my Powerbook G4?

I just installed OS 10.4 Tiger over Panther 10.3.9 on my trusty Powerbook G4. I now have among my applications a 3.11 GB folder titled "XCopy PowerBook App & Classic Support." Does XCopy mean "extra copy," or what? I'd like to free up those 3.11 GB, and I don't need OS9 any more, but I may need "PowerBook App," tho I've never used anything like that, to my knowledge, in the last 4 years. Can anyone tell me what the "XCopy PowerBook App & Classic Support" folder is good for, and whether or not I can delete it and still go about business as usual?
Thanks to the extended Mac team out there......

I don't know what it is....I thought at first (naively, probably) that "XCopy" meant "extra copy." It simply appears at the end of my applications folder as "XCopy PowerBook App & Classic Support." It has the following contents: aliases for "etc.," "Install Applications & Classic Support," "mach," "tmp," "var"; a "read this first" text that outlines, in general how to install OS10 and Classic Support; and an 812 kb OS9 preferences folder. I don't know how that reads as 3.11 GB, but it does.

  • Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Bernadette

  • How do I change to a new Apple ID on iPhone4 (need to keep old ID usable aswell)

How do I change my Apple iPhone4 - Apple ID from the ID it is set up with, to a new one.  I need to keep the current Apple ID as it is used by another family member on their iPhone.  At present both phones are using the same Apple ID.....

You can create a new Apple ID here
    https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
To change the Apple ID on your iPhone, sign out in Settings > Store and sign in with the new Apple ID.

  • Once I finish an iMovie project and I publish it to various destinations (Dropbox iTunes YouTube etc) do I need to keep the original raw video on my MacBook or can I archive it to an external hard drive.

I have now finished 3 iMovie projects and have learned how to prepare them for sharing through various media like Dropbox, iDVD YouTube iTunes etc. but I now have produced a huge number of related files which are filling up my hard drive to the point that I can't import any further raw video until I archive or delete many of these files.
What files do I need to keep on my MacBook in order to be able to keep these various shared locations functioning, and what should I delete or archive?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Need to do a re-format, what do i need to keep?

hi, I need to re-format my desk top computer and re-install my OS. I've got a big i-tunes library and have spent ages organising it and importing artwork so don't want to lose anything. All my music is stored on an external drive so won't be touched by the re-install.
What I want to know is what files do I need to keep in order for my I-tunes to operate in the same way after the OS re-install?
I presumed it would be the files in my c drive-> programme files -> I-tunes folder so did a dummy run by transfering these files to my laptop, and connecting my external drive and mapping it to the same letter. It didn't work.
    Have I missed some files?

Copy the entire _*iTunes folder*_ in My Documents/My Music to the external.
Then copy it back after you fromat.
You can even keep it on the external and use it.
Click the icon to launch iTunes then immediately press and hold Shift.
iTunes will ask if you want to *Create new library* or *Use existing library*.
Select *Use exisiting library* and select the *iTunes library.itl* file in the *iTunes folder* you copied to the external.

  • Do I need to keep a local copy?

All of my music is on a single external drive.
Once itunes match upoads/match all of my music, do I need to keep the external drive connected to one of my computer?
Can I store the external drive in my safe or even trow it out and keep everything on the cloud without any local storage?

If you care about your data, yes you should. Redundant backup plans are what keeps data safe.
    Bernard Brault wrote:
ITune Match has a copy my entire song collection as both links to my songs known to the Apple Store and cloud copies of my songs it could not match. So effectively iTunes Match has my entire 10,000 song collection but I am still forced to keep a backup of my song collection in a safe or on another cloud service like Dropbox or I risk loosing it all when my local drive eventually fails!
It's not a true copy. Think if it as a mirror. For example I purchased the recently remastered early Rush albums on CD. There was one album in each box in 24-bit, 96 kHz which I have ripped and then converted to AAC @ 256 Kbps for the highest quality AAC track I can get. Now, most of these tracks were matched to tracks in the iTunes Store (which is fine since I'm going to be listening to them on my iPhone), but they are not the same tracks that are in my iTunes library. If I had a disaster I would not be able to restore the tracks I spent to much time on, I'd have to settle for the tracks I can get from the iTunes Store. For me this is not an optimal solution, which is why I keep local backups.
If none of this is important to you, or if your other personal data is not important to you, then by all means don't backup. The choice is yours. But if you do not backup you will eventually lose data.

  • Backing up files on external hard drive... do I need to keep render files?

Hi, I back up all of my video work and files onto DVDs and to a Lacie external hard drive. I am filling that up quickly and would like to know if I need to keep copies of the render files, which are quite large. Will it save me that much time later? Or are they simply taking up much needed space?
    thanks in advance

    Welcome to the forum!
Render files can always be regenerated if needed. I dump them before backups.
If you keep your original footage on tape, the only stuff you need to back up is the FCP project file, any still images, AE files, etc. This takes VERY little space in the scheme of things.
The final quicktime video file (if that is what was created) can also be sent back to tape.
    Good luck.

  • Do I need to keep the Capsule plugged in to my cable modem in order to use it for backup?

The location of my cable modem is really inconvenient. I'd like to move the Capsule to a different room. Do I need to keep it connected to the cable modem in order to be able to use it as my Time Machine backup device?

I assume your cable modem is a router.. as such the TC should be wired to it in bridge. It will not do anything worse than now for the network in the house.. and the TC can then be accessed as per normal.
TC is designed to be plugged into the modem or main router by ethernet.
You can move it anywhere you like in the house as long as you have ethernet connection back to the modem.
You can run the TC by wireless .. it will have the following effects.
    1. Super slow backups. It will simply reduce the current wireless speed by half or more for backups.
    2. Since there is no QoS your internet will stop during backups. Or near to.
    3. You will affect all wireless clients during the backups.
It can work, if your backups are very small.. but the TC becomes a near to useless dumb client in the network.. ethernet ports are off, wireless becomes mere client.. so you cannot even connect directly to it.
If you try the TC in stand alone.. ie a secondary network.. that can work.
    1. The computer will then have backups or internet not both. You will need to deliberately connect to the TC to get backups working. That is assuming you use wireless.
    2. You can do it with ethernet. and have internet by wireless. but the setup is tricky.. tell us if you want to proceed this way.
    3. The problem is, the TC now becomes useless to the whole network and is only used by one computer. You may as well have bought a cheap USB drive, which is more reliable and faster.

  • My tabs will not restore after starting Firefox -- even with the option to restore my tabs and windows is checked in the "options" window. I'm losing tabs from previous sessions that I need to keep open every time I need to restart. Thanks for any advice!

Is there something else I need to tweak to get rid of this annoyance instead of simply clicking the check box? I'm losing tabs from previous sessions that I need to keep open every time I need to restart. Thanks for any advice!

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

  • Do I need to keep my original photos after iPhoto imported them?

I am new to Mac so I am not sure how iPhoto handles the photos that have been imported. I assumed it was like iTunes, however I see that my iPhoto Library file is about 20 gigs, which is about the same size of all my photos.
Did it duplicate my photos and put them in the iPhoto Library?
Do I need to keep the originals?
This just seems a little odd to me if it duplicated all my files. I am now using 40 gigs of space instead of 20.
The reason for my question is I am trying to setup a second user and share the photos on each account. iTunes was no problem, just put it in the shared folder and pointed each user settings to it, but everything I read about iPhoto sharing makes it sound a lot more difficult.

What are the advantages / disadvantages to running a managed library or not?
You really, really want to use a Managed Library.
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers

  • Can I lock a contact so I can't accidentally call it?  I need to keep them unblocked to track calls/texts from them...

Can I lock a contact so I can't accidentally call it?  I need to keep them unblocked to document their calls/texts so I can't delete them.

Yes. AIFF performs no compression so your copy will be bit for bit identical: no loss. It uses a lot of disk space too. Apple Lossless (ALAC) will compress, but also with no loss. Expect file sizes about 50% of the original.
The sample rate of 44.1 KHz is identical to that of every commercially produced audio CDs that I am aware of. There is no benefit in increasing it or attempting to "tweak" its settings.
I used Toast for many years and consider it a well designed product. I have not had any reason to upgrade to more recent versions though. If you copy the CD audio with no loss (AIFF or ALAC), then that obviates any question about sound quality since it will be identical to the original. Toast may be able to alter the sound quality but I don't advocate trying to improve upon what is essentially your only "master" - the audio CD. As I recall Toast had features such as noise reduction. That may be valuable for magnetic tape, but it's not a concern with a CD. Even very good noise reduction alters the original to some extent, and it seems to me that you want an exact duplicate. Any alteration will be contrary to your stated goal of bit-for-bit reproduction.
    Don't know about Amadeus Pro.

  • Migrate Active Directory 2008 to 2012 but need to keep the same ip address and server name

    Hi,
Current setup is 2 DCs in one site running 2008 R2 AD.
We are planning to migrate from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 but need to keep the same ip address and server name. I have came up two plans to do this and hope someone can tell me which one would be the best approach. What is the pros
and cons in Plan A and B or may be plan C if there is a better one?
First, I was planning to do plan A but just had a second thought of Plan B.  My concern in Plan A is about changing the server name when the new 2012 R2 already running as DC.  Plan B would be changing all the old server
name and ip before they become member sever and DC.
Any information and suggestion would be very appreciated.
    Plan A
    Run adprep /forestprep on 2008 R2 DC
Build a new 2012 R2 server and promote it as 3rd DCs in current Domain
    Transfer FSMO from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2
Run Repadmin /syncall to force replication
Rename the demoted 2008 R2 DC to something else
Change the demoted 2008 R2 ip address to something else
Restart the demoted 2008 R2 server to take effect
Now, run Netdom computername command to change the new 2012 R2 server name to the old 2008 R2 DC server name
    Change the new 2012 R2 DC's ip to old 2008 R2 DC's ip
    Run ipconfig /flushdns
    Run ipconfig /registerdns
    DCDIAG to see any error
    Plan B
    Build 2 new 2012 R2 standalone servers
In 2008 R2 ServerA transfer FSMO to 2008 R2 ServerB
Demote 2008 R2 ServerA to become member server
Rename 2008 R2 ServerA to something else and change the ip address to something else and shut it down
Now, rename one of the new 2012 R2 standalone server to the old demoted 2008 R2 ServerA name
Change the new 2012 R2 standalone server ip to the old demoted 2008 R2 ServerA's ip address
Add the new 2012 R2 standalone server (now with the old 2008 R2 ServerA name and ip) to become member server
Run adprep /forestprep on the 2008 R2 ServerB
Promote the new 2012 R2 (now with the old 2008 R2 ServerA name and ip) as DC
Transfer 2008 R2 ServerB FSMO to the new 2012 R2 DC (now with the old 2008 R2 ServerA name and ip)
Demote 2008 R2 ServerB as member server
Rename 2008 R2 ServerB to something else and change the ip address to something else and shut it down
Now, rename the 2nd new 2012 R2 standalone server to the old demoted 2008 R2 ServerB name
Change the new 2012 R2 standalone server ip to the old demoted 2008 R2 SeverB 's ip address
Add the 2nd new 2012 R2 standalone server to become member server
    Promote it as DC
    Run DCDIAG to check error
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Renaming a Domain Controller is a risky operation which may lead to issues, therefore, I would suggest you go with the Plan B, rename the server before it becomes DC.
Here is a blog below which could be helpful to you:

wth am i gonna do im feed up and on top i have no one to help me been calling itunes for days now im ****** off to the maxxx

I've been jumping through the hoops with Apple Support on this issue....first time I called they said I should try updating from IOS 4.0 to 4.1....tried that and the issue still persisted...then I called back to update the ticket and get the next steps...they said that the Bank is rejecting the request for verification and that is why it keeps prompting (which doesn't make sense since the confirmation seems to go through successfully). The rep also contacted the iTunes dept and had them run the verify manually and said the bank rejected it. The next hoop they want me to jump through is calling the bank to verify that the account is in good standing and inquire about the rejected requests. I'm fairly certain the bank account is in good standing....will verify of course....but I find it hard to believe that all the people who have posted here, plus countless others that are experiencing the same issue but haven't, are ALL having banking issues in the last 24hrs...I'm more convinced there is a disconnect on the back end between iTunes and Financial institutions...
I'm not sure I buy in to everything I was told...he also told me he has had several calls on this issue and they were all told to check with their banks. He could not verify that any of his past calls were resolved. Needless to say I'm not 100% believing everything he told me....weak response from Apple support on this issue so far.
