Do I need to look at machines with 16 GB RAM?

I am interested in purchasing a 13" Macbook Air as a replacement for my current 13" mid-2009 Macbook pro. I have vacillated between the MBA or the retina-MBP for some time but really want something portable. My only reservation is the RAM of the MBA. I know it is not upgradable and you can only get it with 8GB.
My current MBP is 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo appears to be using most of my current 8 GB of RAM as shown by the Activity Monitor report below. I plan to use the MBA for the same activiities as I currently use the MBP and allow for any future needs as I tend to keep my laptops longer than the average 3 years.
I tend to multi-task on my computer with internet, itunes, iphoto, excel, word processing but do not do any video processing or gaming.
Would 8 GB RAM be enough or should I consider an option (rMBP) where I can upgrade to 16 GB?
Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays.

The high memory usage you are seeing is probably due to having large programs open simultaneously, such as Excel and Woed and iPhot...things that use a lot of memory.  If it is important to keep them all open at the same time, then more memory will be of help, especially since that will reduce the use of virtual memory, aka the hard drive, which is slow memory.
In this type of usage, a machine that can handle larger memory installs may be a good choice.

  • Need help created state machine with timed digital output

Hello everyone I'm new in LabView especially about how to make a state machine. I want to make simulation about state machine with digital output. In Front Panel there are volt_in as an input slider (0-10 V), two numeric control (upper limit and bottom limit), a waveform chart to plot those 3 value, and three boolean (P0.0, P0.1, P0.2) as an indicator. Boolean indicator will on if input from slider exceed the limit in certain situation. This simulation will work as follow:
    1. Define the upper & bottom limit (ex. 8 & 4V)
    2. Make an input from slider (0-10V)
    3. If input (2) exceed the upper limit but less than 10 second (ex. you have 9V input for 8 second, but after 8 second you change the slider back to normal between 4-8V) then the boolean indicator P0.0 & P0.2 will stay off
    4. If input (2) exceed the upper limit more than 10 second (ex. you have 9V input for 4 second, change to 8.5 V for 3 second, and then change to 10V for 3 second) then the boolean indicator P0.0 will turn on for 5 second, turn off, then follow by indicator P0.2 for 5 second, and turn off
    5. Wait 15 second, then repeat process from (2)
Same process for input that exceed the bottom limit (P0.1 and P0.2 as indicator).
Can you help me make the block diagram of this process? I will appreciate any of your help.
    Best Regards

I would highly recommend you to open the template in LabVIEW to design state machines. You can the Standard State Machine template if you go to File -> New.. and Browse to VI -> From Template -> Frameworks -> Design Patterns.
Also, here is a good explanation of one:

  • If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes?

    I have two questions...
    1) If I do a clean install on my MacBook Pro will I be able to re-install apps (FCP, Aperture, MS Office etc.) from a Time Machine backup, or will I need the original install DVDs with authorization codes? (because I don't have them)
    2) Has anyone ever seen anything like this before on their computers?
The Apple Genius' were stumped by my laptop issues and said they'd never seen anything like it before and recommended I did a clean install. Below you can see my trash bin, and if you look at the "Empty" button it reads "N201" and then there's the "N39" to the left of it. You can also see these numbers over by the folder area--"SD5, SD6, SD7." But that's not all...
When I right click on items I see the numbers again. Instead of "Open with" I get "N152" and there's an "N35" and "LB1" towards the bottom.
I have no idea what's going on so I'm just going to do a clean install on my machine but I don't want to lose my apps. I don't have the original install DVDs for them anymore. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

You don't lose them.  You can always redownload them from the app store after you log back in with your Apple ID.
    "Buy, download, and even redownload.
You can install apps on every Mac you use and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own."

If you have a license for Lightroom, you should be able to reinstall it from an installer disc or re-download it from Adobe after explaining the situation and clarifying the license issues. Either will be simpler than trying to extract and install it from a TM backup of a different Mac, I think. If it's anything like other Adobe products, it has bits and pieces all over the place that you'll have to find and put in their right places on your girlfirend's Mac.

    Hi
we do have the following situation
on computer A there is a Excel Document Addin development project , Visual Studio 2012, Office 2010 installed. All works fine.
we would like to bring the project to another machine with Visual Studio 2012, but Office 2013 installed.
Visual Studio can not build the project. It says that the application is not installed on the machine (though Excel 2013 is installed , but not Excel 2010) It seems to have a problem with the
    vbproj.
In other forums I found a hint that "Hostpackage = ..} needs to be set accordingly in the vbproj. I created then a "empty Excel-Addin project" under Visual Studio , looked at
the Hostpackage entry, put that into the vbproj of "problem project. It still does not work.
It would be great if anyone could help.

    Hello Eugene
Problem is that it says that projectboard (the name of the main project) can not be loaded. All other projects in the solution can be loaded. Strange thing is , now that I try to create a empty excel Project it says that according to Excel security settings
it can not be generated !?
I opened then Excel and set all Trust Center settings to "Default" - but no effect. I really have no idea what is wrong ..!?

  • Virtual Machine with Adobe Pro 8 Unable to activate.

I had a physical machine with windows 2K3 and Adobe Pro 8. We ported the physical machine to a virtual machine and now Adobe Pro 8 says it needs to activate again. We tried to activate through the web and over the phone, but we are currently out of activations. The person on the phone says that Adobe Pro or ANY of their products for that matter will NOT work on a virtual machine!!! How ridiculous is that? With many companies going green and going virtual I can not believe Adobe doesn't support virtual machines. I was told to search the web and forums. I have yet to find an answer. So I've decided to post this if anyone has run in to the same problem and if there are any solutions.

    Victor,
Acrobat most certainly does work on a Virtual Machine (VMware and MS Virtual Server VMs are supported) - I sincerely apologize that you were given incorrect information. We do a large majority of testing and support on VMware-based virtual machines and any issues you have with running Acrobat 8 on a virtual machine should be considered supported.
Acrobat's licensing will require you to re-activate when you change hardware (which, in effect, is what cloning a physical machine to a VM entails - the virtual hardware supplied by the VM will have a different signature than your physical hardware did). This is why you are being prompted to reactive - it has nothing to do with the VM specifically, the same thing would happen if you ghosted your system onto new physical hardware as well.
If you can post a way for me to contact you, I will get you directly in touch with the people who can override an activation for you. That way you will be able to use Acrobat on your virtual machine.
Again, I apologize for you being given incorrect information. The situation is being looked into and new information will be updated to our help desk agents to make sure they are aware of this - thank you for pointing out this oversight.

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine.  I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake  a back-up.  I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • An example of a state machine with transition array?

I am looking at state machine design patterns and am interested particularly in a state machine with boolean trasition array which defines the next state to be executed using an array. Here, the index of the first “True” boolean in the boolean array corresponds to the index of the new state in the array of enums. Has anyone got an example of this design pattern as it would greatly help in my understanding of it. Refer to figure 3c in http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/3024#toc2 for clarity on what i am asking for.
    Thanks in advance.

That seems like a lot of extra work. Why not just use a queue, and queue up the enum you want to go to next? Look up examples on queued state machine. No need for an array and then a boolean to index that array. here is an example

  • Need a fast image viewer with slideshow and autorotating

    Hello everyone,
I'm currently recycling an old computer as a digital photo frame. It runs LXDE.
This computer is also used as a server on which we store our photographs.
I need a fast picture viewer, with the following features:
    - fast processing
    - good rendering
    - image autorotation based on EXIF data
    - random slideshow with recursive browsing
    - GUI is preferred, or I need to find a way to add entries in PCManFM's right-click menu (any guidance is welcome)
    - ability to play video would be nice but is not mandatory
I've tried many image viewers available in repos and AUR. So far only 2 of them are suitable in terms of speed: feh and qiv. But they are CLI-based (no big deal if I find a way to customize PCManFM file associations), and they do not support image autorotating based on EXIF (support has recently been implemented in qiv, but Arch's package is outdated).
Please tell me if you know about a program that'd fit my needs.
    TIA.

Offtopic, but did you know feh has a right click menu?  Rotation is in this menu.
Oh yes, I do know the right click. but I guess I never looked hard enough for the rotation as I do it very infrequently. Thanks for the tip.
How would I set feh, so that when I double click a image file, feh would start up and show that image? If I can get that (and I haven't tried that yet), I guess I can get rid of mirage then.
That's not an feh config, that's a config for whatever file manager you are using.  I'm not sure of the options you'd need to pass feh because I always run it on the command line.

  • Run hyper-v on physical machine with server 2012

I currently am running windows 8.1 with several 8.1 hyper-v clients. I am about to have to do a new install of the host os because i am getting a new faster drive. The convenience and speed of backing up and moving hyper-v clients to different systems is
so easy i was hoping i could take advantage of it for the future. i would also like to use some of the functions of windows only available in the server edition of windows. as a dreamspark student you can get a free copy of windows server 2012. I have not
set up a windows server, but i have run a Linux and bsd one. I only have 1 physical machine. Does it make sense at all to install windows server 2012 and then have all of my working systems be hyper-v clients? i play games and have a nice graphics card. the
clients i don't think use them directly, but would use it via the host i think. I also use visual studio for app dev and i beliebe VS installs a Virtual like machine for windows phone. Can i do this? what would it prevent me from doing that i currently
do? is there a better way to go about this? maybe do the reverse and run the server in hyper-v? thanks

Personally I'd say it depends mainly on what you want to do with the desktop side of your machine. You certainly could install Server 2012 onto your desktop, and from reviews I've seen it's far more suited to being used on a desktop setup than previous server
versions. You still have to do some additional work to enable some of the functionality you'd normally have on a desktop, but which would never be found on a server, but it is more plausible now. There's a bit of a discussion here of the possible issues and
    gotchas
http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/7520-windows-r8-windows-2012-server-makes-great-laptop-os.html which cover some of the main things you'd need to do.
If you're just looking to play with Windows Server and the functionality you're looking to use isn't Hyper-V related then I'd probably go with simply making the Windows Server 2012 another instance on your existing setup, eg within Hyper-V on your 8.1 desktop.
There's no real difference between hyper-v on windows 8 and server 2012 so that side of things doesn't make a difference, and windows 8 is quite capable of handling server vm's (I've got 12 VM's running on my windows 8 desktop, and none of them are client
    OS's).
The main thing which would dissuade me from installing Server 2012 on a desktop is support for other desktop applications. If you're planning to continue using the machine as a desktop, and especially if you play games on it, you're bound to hit issues
with compatibility at some point. Not legitimate compatibility, more situations where some apps will try to detect the OS you're running, and either not recognise the server OS and refuse to install, or recognise it and refuse to install as they're only designed
/ licenced to be install on a client OS. Some apps which are free to use on a client installation for instance require a licence for use on a server (since it's assumed to be commercial installation).

  • Installing OBISEONE on machine with already database installed

    Hi all,
I need to install OBISEONE software on a machine where I've already got an oracle database (enterprise edition 10gr2) installed.
I'm looking for a guide on how to install on a machine with an existing home! Anyone has any clues?
Install in a completely different folder and home?
Thanks in advance for any hints

    Two things -
    1)OBISE1 comes with oracle 10 R2
2)OBISE1 does not work well on servers which already have an oracle home and take my word on it , it sounds pretty dumb but I tried this at a client and Oracle got back to me after three days suggesting I choose a virgin machine to install OBISE1 , try it but for me installation froze as it tried to create a listner for the bundled DB.Also if you want to access any help , its not metalink but you have to go through metalink3.

  • Create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell searching on hostname

    Dear,
I’m a starter with PowerShell scripting an I’m looking for a script to create Hyper-V Virtual Machines with Windows PowerShell. The idea behind the script is that when I run the script its first searching for the hostname. I’m migrating 24 locations and each
location have a different hostname like xxx-SRV001. The script needs to use the first 3 signs from the hostname in this case “xxx” and create 2 VM's with below info:
    Virtual Machine 1 2048MB
    Virtual Machine 2 4096MB
    Location D:\VM\
I can create VM's with Powershell into Hyper-V so only a script to first searching for the first 3 characters of the hostname is enough.
    Example:
It's the intention that when the script runs it's looking for the hostname. As example we have hostname 000-SRV001
If the script see the first 3 characters of the hostname, in this case 000 he need to create 2 VMs with name xxx-SRV002 and xxx-SRV004
I think it must be something with
    $hostname = "Get-WmiObject -computername $Machine Win32_Computersystem"
But then when i'm asking for $hostname he must give me back the hostname and if the hostname is 1 of the 24 locations then he need to create 2 vm's in Hyper-V with above info.
Can you help me or do you have a script for this?
