Do I need to? Or is there a way to Defragment a HDD?
Hi everyone.
My background in in working on Windows. I'm not new to Mac as I've been working with Mac OS X for years.
On a PC I would defragment the HDD every once and a while.
Now, I'm solely on a MAC.
Working with video I've often times just about maxed out my internal and external HDDs. However I always end up deleting old unnecessary footage and shuffling stuff around to create more space.
Do I need to defragment my HDDs? Is there even a need for that with Mac? I was reading that it wasn't really necessary but then I recently read an article stating that it may be necessary if you work with video and that there were 3rd party applications to do it.
Any thoughts and ideas are appreciated.

While file level fragmentation is not a real issue, directory optimization may offer some significant benefits. This is why Disk Warrior ought to be in your tool box. If nothing else, it is a good program to make sure there are no issues with your directory structures.

well, my dad gave me his iphone 3gs when he got a new iphone. he passed away and his itunes account was terminated and my iphone is disabled for 21 million and something minutes and i dont even know how it happened. my phone has been disabled for a really long time and i calculated the time span of how many minutes its locked and it would be locked for 41 years. To recover it at this point you need to restore it using the computer it was last backed up to. This will remove the passcode.

HELP! I just got a 5S....synced to my computer....and lost the photos/videos that I took today before connecting to my computer that I need back! Is there any way to recover these?
If you took pictures and then set up your phone using a back up from an old phone, you have erased the pictures. If you emailed or texted them to someone, you may be able to get them back that way.

You need to reload a compatible version from the iTunes library on your computer. If you didn't keep a copy of that, no.

I have a project required for work that is incompatible with FF7. My computer is upgraded to FF7. The program is compatible with FF3. Is there some way to have access to FF3 while keeping my FF7 for regular use?

Ok so I am writing a novel and I do it when I walk the dog mostly so a lot of it is done in notes. After a particularly long walk as the creative juices were flowing I had written about 3000 words.
I wanted to email it to my laptop so I could carry on when I got home and I know I could have sent it directly from there but when you do that the email subject ends up being the whole body of text and you have the faf of deleting it so I selected the whole text and meant to press copy so I can paste it in toan email but instead pressed paste.
All of my work has gone, replaced by the last thing I copy pasted.
Can I get that text back? Please, please help.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

If they are not in your photostream, camera roll or computer you may be able to restore if you have backup from the time that pictures were there. Do you?

I just purchase a new IMac, I am trying to use migration assistant. the problem I am having is my old mac cannot connect to the internet and it needs a software update, can I download the update on my new mac and install it somehow on my old mac?
If it's a free update, search Apple's support site for it and move the dmg as you would any file. If it's a paid upgrade, no; the Mac App Store upgrades, while downloadable, can't be downloaded from a Mac which can't use them.

I have an iPhone 3GS, the battery is dead and needs replaced. Is there any way to have the battery replaced and save all the photos and videos that are very important of family and friends that are irreplaceable on it? There has been no back up done on the phone that I know of. Thanks for any help you can give me.
I have to think you have tried operating the iPhone with the charging cable plugged into a charger and outlet or USB. It is likely you have tried this and it failed to operate. Have you tried a Reset on the iPhone to see if that will cause the battery to function ling enough to do an iCloud backup or iTunes backup?

Is there a way to upgrade a mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro so that it can use a wireless n network?
I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro, and I live in a share house. The router we are using is very far away from my room and I do not get very good signal strength. However, my phone and ipad, which are newer, and have wireless n capability, are able to get quite good speeds on this network. I think my problem is that my computer only has a wireless a/b/g airport card. I know that it is meant to be compatible with the draft IEEE 802.11n specification but I don't think it is connecting to the network as a wireless n device.
Is there a way for me to upgrade this card? I have seen a number of cards on ebay etc but I cannot find one that matches my needs. Alternatively, is there a way to make my computer join the network as a wireless n device?I am not sure swapping a wireless card is an easy exercise.. I would not recommend it.
You can hunt up a USB wireless stick that is Mac compatible..
Or you can buy an Apple Express and use it as a wireless bridge. There are plenty of alternative wireless bridges.. you just plug them in by ethernet and use wireless.. depending on the brand of wireless router you have. -
The AOL address I was using for my iTunes account has been deleted due to me not signing in for awhile and I'm afraid that I will lose all of my purchases made from my iphone when I sync it into iTunes for a much needed update and so that I can (hopefully) transfer its data to my new iPhone 4...
The only time I have synced my current iPhone was when I activated it but since then I have not been able to sync with my computer and now have a new one.

ThomYou don't need to access your e-mail account, just get into your Apple account and change the e-mail address. If you can't access your Apple account, then you have a bigger issue to contend with.
