Do I need to reinstall software prior to restoring data from time machine?
I only have working files backed up via time machine. Do I need to reinstall all software PRIOR to restoring from my time machine backup?
I may have misunderstood your question. But, if you have an application such as Photoshop or Word, (from what you say neither of which are backed up by TM) and their files are backed up (ie., Photoshop image files and Word text files), I see no reason why you cannot restore individual Photoshop and Word files. I have done that by choosing "Enter Time Machine", navigating back in time to the desired file and pressing the big "Restore" button at TM's window, bottom right. I have never needed to restore the parent applications.

Hard drive crashed need to restore iphotos from Time Machine
I need some serious help. I have a 24inch intel imac and my hard drive failed. I thought I had everything backed up on my external hard drive via Time Machine (my last backup was April 11th) so I replaced the hard drive.
Once I reinstalled Leopard 10.5 it asked me if I wanted to restore my data from Time Machine which I did. It seemed like it worked great but when I opened up iphoto all 43,000 pictures (cherished family pictures of our children) were gone!
iphoto still has the Event Titles, how many photos, and the sizes but they are empty with nothing but a big exclamation point. I see the iphoto library under Time machine as well but the restore is grayed out I can't even go back in time because the arrow is grayed out.
I named the new hard drive "new SG 1.0TB" and the old one was just named Macintosh HD. I read briefly somewhere that the old and new hard drives need to have the same name. Is this correct? Also does it make a difference that I had Leopard 10.5.6 when my photos were available and now I'm only on 10.5? Please help!
I had some help from another forum and he told me to look under the Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library and right click on it and select 'Show Package Contents. All the folders are there (teasing me) but there are no pictures in the folders so nothing. But I was searching again on my external time machine backup and found iphotos under time machine backups/backups.backupdp/Ryan Gunter's Computer (2)/2009-01031-002706/Macintosh HD/Users/ryang808/pictures. It had all my iphotos from 1999 until the january 2009 but everything from this date to present is not there (the folders are there but nothing in them) could they still be hiding somewhere?? And how do I get the ones I do have back in iPhoto?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much! All the folders are there (teasing me) but there are no pictures in the folders so nothing. But I was searching again on my external time machine backup and found iphotos under time machine backups/backups.backupdp/Ryan Gunter's Computer (2)/2009-01031-002706/Macintosh HD/Users/ryang808/pictures. sorry but, no. if they are not there there is no other place they could be. for some mysterious reason TM didn't back them up. still you should restore what you can. quit iphoto, control-click on TM in the dock and select "browse other TM disks". this will let you browse your old backups via TM interface. locate the folder Macintosh HD/Users/ryang808/pictures on january 31 backup and restore its contents to your Pictures folder. start iphoto and it should have alll those pictures.

My iMac, running 10.10.3 seems to have an interesting issue. Since the last round of apple updates[ including photos 1.0]safari has been dropping my "News" bookmarks folder. It disappears on restart or when trying to add a bookmark to any folder. I am able to restore it with time machine and it will stay in place until all of a sudden .I notice it is once again gone. Restore and its back. Quite a pain in the butt. Any suggestions on a more permanent fix would be appreciated.
Thanks, wife has iPad on holiday so I could not check it. iCloud occurred to me but I am fairly new to it as prior to iPad we had no need of it. Thanks again Linc, I've tried it a couple of times this afternoon and it seems to be sticking around. Hugh

Under the direction of Apple Support, I recently erased my iMac (Intel) hard drive, reinstalled and updated software and migrated data from an external hard drive via Time Machine.
Now, after clicking on "PRINT", the print dialog box says "printing" then says "no pages found", and finally says "stopped"; and when I plug in my camera to download photos, the camera is not recognized. Both printer and camera are connected via USB.
I checked connections, verified printing and iPhoto preferences, turned printer off then on again, unplugged and replugged USB connections, and checked and followed directions in the Help menu. Thanks very much, I'd just tried rkaufmann87's suggestion and entered "This solved my question" when your suggestion popped up—you deserve a "This solved my question" too, though I saw only an option for "This helped me".
Before I got rkaufmann87's suggestion, I repaired disk permissions and that resolved the camera problem. Both of you nailed the solution.
Thanks again! -
I recently replaced the hard disk on my macbook pro. As I had lost my original system disks that came with my mac, I paid an authorised Apple Reseller to reinstall OX 10.6.8 and also they reinstalled the data from my Time Machine back up. However, I have noticed a lot of functions no longer work. I was told by Apple Reseller that they only installed system disk I (operating system), but not system disk II (programme disk), as they do not have that disk. I was advised to use Disk II from any macbook pro with an OS 10.6.8 or higher..... I tried that but it did not work as mac would not read that disk. Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

Or, it the OP's paid technician missed it the first time, he can mount the OS X install DVD on the desktop, open the Optional Installs folder, double click on the Optional Installs .mpkg, and step through the process until arriving at the "Installation Type." There, the OP can check off Rosetta, iPod Support, Qucktime, Printer Support, more fonts, and a bunch of Applications, including Address Book, iCal, iChat, iTunes, Mail, Dictionaries, Safari, and X11 for installation. Both those installs and whatever is on Disk 2 can be installed without starting from scratch.
And while having the original installer DVD's that came with the Mac is the best way to go, the OP can download the 10.6.8 combo updater and run that. Since it's an all purpose updater, it configures itself for the Mac it's run on so, in a sense, it's customization after the fact. If the combo updater is run before Disk 2 is available, it can be run again afterwards. Indeed, I've found that the combo updater can fix problems which normally would call for a reinstallation of the OS; not always but sometimes. -
I have been preparing photos for export and found some have a thumbnail but no image, only the exclamation mark upon selection. I have restored three 'broken' thumbnails via Time Machine. I want to indentify all the broken thumbnails so I can choose which to restore and also find them quickly in Time Machine. The only way I currently know is to select each thumbnail, individually, and see if it brings up the exclamation mark 'image'. Is there a way to find only the 'broken' thumbnails?
ThanksI went to TM and "Browse Other Backup Disks", selected the USB drive used for TM, browsed for the most recent backup and, one by one, copied each of the folders within /Users/NAME in the TM backup to /Users/NAME on the freshly installed MBP hard drive. The folders I'm referring to are Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public. I overwrote the existing (empty) folders.
That's not how you restore. Might work for other material (pure fluke that,) but iPhoto is a database and the back up is stored in increments. Time Machine needs to reassemble it from the increments.
Enter the Time Machine interface, go to the Pictures Folder. Locate the iPhoto Library you want to restore and click restore.

Need advice (help!) Can I get files from Time Machine to a PC
My Mac book's HD I think is dead. I have an external HD with Time Machine back ups on it. I really NEED to get my address book contacts off and onto my back up PC, for right now. Is there even a way to do that?? and while Im at it what about iTunes library?
Please tell me there is a way.Chad,
I must disagree with Nerowolf on this one. You should be able to get the items you need off the drive, even connected to a PC.
Contrary to what Nerowolf believes, Time Machine stores backups as standard, complete files; it does not make "incremental" backups in the traditional sense. Each and every backup includes every file from the source, and each one is a complete file.
The trick with Time Machine is that the data associated with those many, many files is only copied to the drive once, and each "iteration" of the same file links to that single copy of the data. The process whereby this occurs is called "multiple hard links," and the resultant files are called "multi-linked files."
You need not be concerned with all this. The important point is that the files are seen as normal files to you and to the OS.
The real problem, however, is that those files are stored on a volume formatted as HFS+, and Windows cannot normally access this file system. If you attempt to connect your Time Machine drive to a PC, it will want to format it. If you really need to access the drive, you'll need something like MacDrive, a PC utility that allows Windows to mount and access HFS+ volumes. Look for it on Versiontracker.com (in order to use it, you'll need to pay for it).
CAVEAT: I do not know with certainty that MacDrive includes compatibility with Multi-linked files. Multi-linking is part and parcel of the HFS+ file system format, so there may be no problem, but you might want to double-check to make sure Multi-linked files are fully supported in MacDrive.

I cannot restore iCal from time machine error message cannot copy iCal as it is needed by os x
I have tried to restore a previous version of iCal from a time machine backup as I keep getting error message "iCal cannot be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OS X"
You have two library folders: one is at the top level (when you open your hard drive) and the other is in your user directory (when you click on your account name in the Users folder). You want the latter.

Sounds like a reasonable guess. I expect you used Time Machine because you were already having problems:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
Perhaps you did not use an old enough TM backup from a time before your problems began. If you
do not have a version saved from before you were having trouble, or you simply do not want to try another
TM restore, you can reinstall your Mac OS by using your Snow Leopard DVD as explained in this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8177.html
When you are done reinstalling SL, and apply the 10.6.4 Combo Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
After the Combo Update restarts and finishes, use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Then test to see if your problem is resolved.

I currently have OSX 10.4.11 and need to upgrade my software. I do not have Time Machine yet. My processor is an intel Core 2 duo. Do I have to upgrade to snow leopard 10.6.8 before upgrading to Mavericks?
Assuming your computer has the minimum system requirements yes, upgrade to 10.6.8 and then open the Mac App Store and upgrade to Mavericks. You can only get SL 10.6.x from Apple's online store, it is $20. Prior to upgrading to 10.6.x get an external HD and use a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and make a bootable clone of your system to safeguard all of your valuable data. In the event you have a problem the backup will be invaluable!!!!!
Considering your computer is at best a 2007 iMac I would STRONGLY recommend upgrading your RAM to 6GB, the maximum a 2007 machine can accommodate. You can buy this from either Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com).
Another option is due to the age of your computer is considering buying a newer machine. -
Do I need to unistall CS5 prior to installing CS6 from disk. Thanks
Do I need to unistall CS5 prior to installing CS6 from disk. Thanks
Any Adobe Desktop applications don't overwrite the older version while installation. They install in seperate folders. You can Install and use CS5 and CS6 on the same computer, even simultaneously.

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?
Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing. 36 hours is rather long. Seems like a new migration. Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter. That is, use > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user. Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours? I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here? Or a really, really slow disk? Or a sick backup? (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic. Does your existing (old) system work? If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage. (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!) In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk. Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire. And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.
