Do I need to reload Mac OS X?

Sorry if this is a stupid question:
When I set up my laptop I think that OS X didn't install properly as I am missing some random programs such as Keychain, Comic Life etc and my iPhoto freezes fairly often.
A friend told me to simply reload mac OS X, however I am paranoid that in the process I will lose files, such as music or photos, as these programs will be reinstalled?
Am I worrying about nothing and should I just go ahead and reinstall it?

First, it is always better to backup your files before the restore of the OS.
You can do the archive and install rather than erase and install

My dad has dementia - does not remember his password. His hard drive has been erased. We need to reload Mountain Lion and can't figure out how to do it. Internet recovery asks for his Apple ID and password. He has no idea. I have an Apple ID but have never bought anything through the iTunes store so it won't accept my Apple ID. I don't know if his computer is under warranty. He does not remember if he has Applecare. I tried reinstalling Leopard -- the computer originally came with Leopard -- but the computer screen goes grey and a message comes up saying I need to restart. He wants to give this computer to me since it's useless to him. What do I do to get a system on it again?

You will need to reformat the hard drive to go back to Snow Leopard or Leopard.
Does he have a Snow Leopard Disk? He should, as there is no way to go from Leopard to Mountain Lion without it. If you can find the Snow Leopard Disk, I'd at least start with that.
You will need to use Disk Utility in the installer to format the hard drive and get rid of the recovery partition.
Boot from the installer disk by holding down the C key on restart. When it boots, Open Disk Utility (Utilities menu, at least in Snow Leopard).
Select the Hard drive and then click the Partition tab.
Select 1 Partition from the partition menu.
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Name the drive (Macintosh HD is the standard).
Click Apply to partition the drive.
When it is done, quit Disk Utility and install the OS.

Mac OS X 10.7.5 or newer, or see below. Press the Command and R keys at startup to load the recovery partition, or the Option, Command, and R keys to reinstall the computer's original OS.

  • UCCX upgrade, need to reload the data

I have just install 8.5 in the lab to test and I used a PUT file. I would like to reload that data without reinstalling UCCX.
Is there a flag that I can change to do this? or do I need to reload UCCX?
    Thanks.

    Hi Carlo,
    If I understand your query.
Now you have restored on UCCX 8.5  once using the PUT tool in the lab and will test it for a week.
After this you would like to take one more backup using the PUT tool on the older UCCX system, and Restore it again on the UCCX 8.5 system (built freshly), Yes you can do this. Provided that you have a License MAC (or you can request for new UCCX license incase if your license MAC is different from the previously build UCCX 8.5 system) matching your newly built UCCX 8.5 system.
Note: PUT tool version is very specific to each UCCX 8.x release, so please use the respective PUT tool to take the backup of the older UCCX system.
You can restore the sambackup of file multiple times also, but everytime you need to bring the UCCX 8.5 system freshly.
    Hope it helps.
    Anand

  • Had to reload window Vista need to reload stored cds from Windowsold file after reload

had to reload window Vista need to reload stored cds from Windowsold file

had to reload my computer after a HD failure. I reloaded everything along with current version of Itunes.
Consider Windows 7 has its own built in data and system backup, and now Windows 7 (Dev) has a better hourly backup/archive versions, and there are 3rd party programs....
    you have the CDs still?
Prosoft Data Rescue 3 for PC and Macs (demo) can scan a drive for recovery.
Bad blocks, or issues with directory and such? out right hard drive failure?
And then there are network storage if you have more than one computer, or use HomeGroup (Win 7) to access files across LAN.
My Music Media Library is never on the boot drive, I wish the iPod backup wasnt as well.
For an excellent utility to clone Windows OS drive2drive, I recommend and use Paragon HDM 2011 Suite, used as needed and weekly so I always have a system clone that I can pop in and boot from, no image, no restore needed (set the BIOS or hot key).  Wouldn't be w/o and $49. Takes 10 minutes for 50GB Windows OS.

    Hello!
As a user-to-user volunteer-supported community, there is no commitment for when/if any post will be responded to. We try, but we as well are only human and also have lives to live. Further, many of us who volunteer a lot of time here are in the USA...and this past weekend (starting Thursday, earlier for some) was a major holiday period in the USA, rendering many of the volunteers busy with their lives and unable to post here. Hence, the delay in replying to your post is, while unfortunate, not unexpected. Of course, this solution has been posted perhaps thousands of times already...some searching of the site should certainly have revealed it to you sooner rather than awaiting a reply perhaps?
In any event...concerning your query -- at the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
You can bypass the Desktop Software for this and from a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Why does leopard need to reload so often?

For about a year now, by old imac using 10.6.8 has struggled on the internet.  The pages seem to almost never completely load (the spinning dial rarely stops), and frequently I will need to stop loading and reload it.  If the computer sits for a few minutes it will also need to reload the page.

Have you checked the startup disk lately? It may need repairing.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If Disk Utility reports errors, restart the Mac while inserting the install disc and holding down the C key simultaneously. From there you should be able to repair the startup disk.

You may want to consider upgrading to a newer OS X.

and need the new iTunes 11.1 to be able to use my iPhone on iTunes but I need the new mac software update OXS 10.6.8, but my mac doesn't need or have an update what should I do! I'm upset :'(

    The requirements for iTunes:
    Macintosh System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
    400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
Your Mac must be able to run OSX 10.6.8. If you can run that OSX then you can run iTunes 11.1.
    Which Mac do you have?

How do I port my Windows Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files to the MAC?  What software is needed on the MAC to use them?  Thanks.

You can certainly use iWork, though I hesitate to recommend it to a seasoned Windows user simply because it would add another level of the unfamiliar with which you would have to gain familiarity. The iWork applications are certainly very competent and in most respects both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. They are not 100% compatible however, though that typically manifests itself in document formatting issues rather than anything more significant.
I have never attempted to import emails from a Windows system into MacOS - other than in Outlook connected to an Exchange server, thus not really an issue at all. I doubt that the Mail app in MacOS can import directly, but of course you could always set the account(s) up on the Mac and then forward emails you want to keep from the PC. Not elegant, but it works. Virtually any Windows document or file, whichever application created it, can be opened or converted for use on a Mac, and using both systems on my desk each day I rarely see any issues switching stuff from one machine to the other. You may stumble over one or two issues, but likely not significant.
In switching platforms there will be some inevitable issues, not so much with being able to import your stuff because there's usually a workaround or a utility that can help, but just with getting familiar with the platform and the differences between Windows and MacOS that can obscure their similarities. From time to time the support community here hears from a user who has found the migration very problematic and regrets it, but for the most part the phrase 'I should have done this years ago...' is rather more prevalent!

  • I need to reload system software on G5 tower but DVD drive is dead ...

My G5 tower won't boot. It hangs up just as the blue progress bar reaches all the way to the right. I'm sure I need to reload the system software, but the DVD drive is also on the fritz and I can't use it. I put an old G4 TiBook into target disc mode, hooked it up to the G5, held the option key down at startup and I was able to get the G5 to boot – so I'm sure the hard drive is not dead.
Any suggestions? How can I use an apple system DVD disc and reload the software? Is there another way? I looked at some old G4s I have lying around, thinking I would pull a drive out of there and use it, but it just looked too hard to do. Is there a way to use Carbon Copy Cloner? I have free firewire drive space. Can I just copy the system file from the G4 TiBook onto the G5?
    Sorry, I can't tell you the OS, I think it's 10.4.?, but I forget!

reboot the G5 from the Ti target disk, slip the DVD in when you hit the desktop, tell it to reboot from the DVD - open the install OS X icon from the disc, enter pw & click restart.
another thing you might try is imaging the dvd to a firewire drive or partition on the Ti book... backup the tibook first if you resort to that.

  • Do I need to install  Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware

    Hiya,
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro,it is Mac OS X version 10.4.8, i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)?
I also tried to install MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2, however it says the computer doesn't need to install it. And I checked my Boot ROM Version is MBP22.00A5.B00. After the update it should be: MBP11.0055.B08 (MacBook Pro 15 inch). So I don't know what to do?
    please help!
    Thanks.
    Catherine

"Do I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel) and firmware"
You don't "need" to install anything. If you think you can benefit from the updates then go ahead.
"i am just wondering whether I need to install Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (Intel)? "
If it came with 10.4.8 preinstalled, then you do not need to install it.
"So I don't know what to do?"
Nothing. If it says the update isn't needed, then it's already been applied at the factory.
