Do I need to replace my battery right away?

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2011. It mostly stays in my apartment plugged in, since I have an iPad. It recently said that my battery has to be serviced, but my friend said I don't need to if I just leave it plugged all the time. However, I had to unplug it one time and it just shut down (it said it still had 96% though but it won't charge). Now there is an 'x' inside my battery icon. I tried an SMC restart but to no avail.
I'm a busy college student, so it's hard to find time to have this serviced for 2 weeks. However, I'd like to know if it's alright for me to hold off replacing the battery since I leave it plugged anyway. If not, will it damage my Macbook if I don't do anything about it?
Thanks

MBPs can run without functional battery, but high-draw operations still vampire off the battery sometimes.
Not to mention the above observed "battery swells and leaks corosive chemicals on the logic board".

I have an iphone 4s that is  over 2 years old. The phone's battery is no longer able to hold a  charge for an acceptable length of time.  Assuming I need to replace the battery, how much will this cost at an Apple store?

Basically, I'm new to Apple, despite using them before, but I've never actually owned my own.
Since buying this phone off a colleague at work, I seem to be having problems with it. First, I noticed how rubbish the battery life is, then my charger almost went up in flames and thirdly my camera lense is scratched beyond belief.
I know the phone isn't within warranty, although I was lead to believe it was before and during buying it, so basically I'm extremely disappointed with the general make up of iPhone's considering they cost such a **** of a lot of money, you'd think they'd be built to last.
Back to my main point, how much would it cost for a new battery? Or a new camera lense if anyone can help me with that? (I know that the back of the phone was refurbished just before my buying it, so literally just the camera lense)
    Thanks!
So basically it sounds like you bought an abused used iPhone and somehow that makes the phone subpar because dispite the abuse it should still last forever and look like new? Batteries don't last forever, even under ideal conditions, so your expectatoins are unrealistic. Take it in and have an estimate done.

  • Do I need to replace my battery? Or how do I fix this solution?

My iPod 4th generation shows that it is charging when I plug it in. When I unplug from full charge, and I use it. 5 minutes later, or even less, it shows that it goes down to 20% Also, sometimes when I plug in my iPod, it shows that it is charging, then all of a sudden it goes down to red charge (20% charge). Do I need to replace my battery because it is going bad? Or how do I fix this solution?

    - See:
    iPod touch: Hardware troubleshooting
    - Try another cable.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Maybe only a bad battery or maybe somethng else

  • How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

How do i know if I need to replace the battery in my MacBook Pro?

There are a few ways (none of which are covered in the above link). On more recent OS X versions, when you click the battery icon in the menu bar you may see a "Service Battery" or "Replace Now" message. If you aren't seeing that, the system probably thinks the battery is fine.
Also, in your System Information utility, there is a Power section that provides Health information for the battery, with a Condition status and Cycle Count. If the Condition is Normal and your battery is under 300 cycles (for removable batteries) or 1000 cycles (for non-removable batteries) it is not time to replace it yet.
But of course, the other time to replace it is if you don't think you're getting the runtime you want out of it.
If none of those is a problem, don't worry about it.

  • I have my macbook pro for a while now and all of sudden it just started shutting down randomly when my battery had enough life in it and only works and comes back on when I put it on the charger. Do I need to replace my battery?

Do I need to get a battery replacement? Or do I have a virus?
    PLEASE HELP

Sudden power-down is most often caused by overheating. The fans in a Mac are controlled by software that measures temperatures at several points inside the computer, and increases the fan speeds when temperatures are rising. You should get it checked to be sure the fans  are working as expected. Your appointment for an evaluation at the genius Bar at an Apple Store is free, in warranty or out.
Battery shortage will generally cause your MacBook to warn you, then go to sleep.
Your symptoms do not correspond with any know Viruses.

  • Type of battery -- mid 2010 13-inch macbook; and how soon do I need to replace dead battery?

I'm trying to replace the battery on my mid 2010 13-inch Macbook. I'm not sure what kind of battery I need to get, and can't seem to find any indication in "System Information". It's a "MacBook7,1" with Intel Core 2 Duo and Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz. I found this battery on amazon: "Apple MacBook Pro 13 Inch Mid 2010 Battery 60Wh, 5500mAh". Will it work? Do I need to get one with a particular power capacity, or anything like that?
I'm also wondering how quickly I need to get the problem fixed. My computer stopped working yesterday unless plugged into a power source. I don't really want to send it away to get it fixed, as I have a lot of work I need to do on it over the course of the next week. If I buy a battery online, wait for it to arrive, and install it (a process that will probably take at least 4-5 days), will I be leaving it too long? Or is it OK to continue just running my computer off the mains for now?
    Thanks!

PS: here's some other info I found, after my earlier post timed-out:
See how a determined DIY user with some skills & abilities could dissect & replace battery:

Example of what new replacement battery looks like, for your Mac; w/ part number:

Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
An Apple Store or Authorized Apple service provider could replace the battery
for the cost of the part, and a fee for the tech time. This may vary by location.
Hopefully this helps. The part is not considered 'user replaceable' but it is possible.

  • Should i calibrate my battery right away?

my new macbook comes tomorrow ^^. and i read the online manual and it says that i should calibrate sometime the first week. but i also heard you should do it right away.
    what should i do?
    plz help thank

You might as well get started on it right away. You have to charge it and then leave it plugged in at a full charge for 2 hours. That's pretty easy.
The next part about letting it run down is a bit harder, but not at all impossible. Do it as soon as you can, but don't get mental about it if it takes a few days to get around to it.

  • Do I need to replace my battery or is this a mavericks thing?  (Service Battery)

I just updated my operation system a few days ago to Mavericks and I noticed that I'm getting a "service battery" warning. Possibly a coincidence but I'm not sure how many cycles my battery can take.
According to Coconut Battery, I've gone through 307 cycles and my battery's capacity is at 75%.
I've read that a lot of people are seeing this since updating to Mavericks so my question is:
Is this a flaw and do I have some more time left on my battery or is Mavericks that much better at telling you when your battery needs replacing?

Run it down to about 20% and recharge, see if it still says to service.  If so, take it to Apple store genius bar and have the techs evaluate the battery.

  • 15" MacBook Pro (mid2010). I need to replace the battery.

I have inherited my deceased brother's 15" MacBook Pro (mid2010). The battery no longer keeps a charge, so it must stay plugged in.  Can I change the battery myself? If so, must I use an apple battery to replace? Please advise.

Apple will not sell you one of their batteries for you to install.  They insist on installing it for you.
I have seen on Amazon what appear to be OEM graymarket Apple batteries.  If you do choose to purchase one of them, be advised that you will need a #0 Triwing driver to perform the installation.
    ciao.

  • While starting up my Macbook Pro it runs for like a minute. Then it turns off. I know i need to replace my battery...is this my problem? Its connected to the wall so does it still need battery to run?

My Macbook Pro wont stay on. (a min ar so)
I know my battery has to be changed...it's not storing any energy  no more...its done.
But my Macbook is connected to the wall....so it gets its energy i would say?
Is it possible the Book needs a good battery also when its connected?
You think my problem will be solved by buying a new battery?
HELP I NEED THIS FOR WORK!!!
    thanx Coen

The MBP should still operate when you are using a power adapter and plugged into a properly functioning wall outlet.  From your post it sounds like you simply need a new battery so the you can operate the MBP without a power adapter.
If ot does not operate with the power adapter, you have other electrical issues.
    Ciao.

  • I don't have phone, but the TV says I need to replace battery backup for phone?!?!?!

    Hello,
For three years, we've had Verizon Fios Internet and TV.  We've never had a phone.
Today, the contraption Verizon plugged in the wall (sadly, I'm not really sure what it is, and had forgotten it existed until today as it's tucked behind some furniture) started beeping and the replace battery indicator light is on.  Furthermore, when I turn on TV, I am greeted with this message:
    My questions are:
    (1) If I don't have phone service, why would I even have a battery backup (much less need to replace it) to allow phone service during power outages?
    (2) Since I have only internet and TV, can I safely go without replacing this battery?
    (3) If the answer to #2 is yes, then how do I get the thing in the wall to stop beeping every 30 minutes?
Thank you in advance to any responses.

You can unplug the battery in your optical network terminal (ONT) and the message needing to replace the battery will go away.  Verizon customer service did confirm the battery is only for phone service when power is off.
I was only able to find 3 links on the alarm / battery backup.  It looks like they never thought about people who did not want the phone feature and to silence the beeping with the battery removed?
I don't know how frequently my unit beeps, but I don't normally hear it because it is in my garage.  I don't know if it has a pattern to when it beeps; but when I'm in the garage, I sometimes hear a single loud beep for about 1 second.
I imagine the battery must enable the laser to function when the power is off besides supply power to the copper phone lines in your house for a line powered phone.  I would assume then that if one had a UPS to power the computer and router and a good battery in the BBU; then one could have an internet when the power is off too?  Verizon user manuals don't mention this, so it might not work?

  • Replacing a Battery?

    Hello Experts!
I have the previous generation MacBook Pro (bought in 2007 before the latest generation came out a year ago or so) and I need to replace the battery because my old one has been through about 600 charge cycles and it's definitely being shown the door. So my question is are the batteries for the current generation MBPs and my slightly older MBP the same, so I can just get a new 17-inch battery from the Apple Store and it will work? Or do I need to find a battery specifically for my version of the MBP? I figure Apple would probably be smart enough to have one battery for the entire range, but I remember SJ making a big deal about how long the battery life was on the new MBP so that's got me wondering if there was a change. I'm sure many of you know whether I can buy an off the shelf battery and swap it for my old one, so if that's the case then please help me out so I don't scrub a hundred odd Euros buying something that doesn't work.
    Thanks in advance guys!

There is only one type of user-replaceable battery for the 17" MBP (there are two types for the 15" MBPs). The batteries on the newer models are not user-replaceable, so you can't just 'get one from the Apple Store.'

  • Need some advice, re: Battery Health

    Hello all,
I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times before, as I've seen it has been. However, there's a multitude of answers across the board here so I'll pose the question again.
My MacBook Pro: Mid 2009, Pro Core Duo model, expanded RAM to 8GB, and upgraded 500GB 7200rpm hard disk.
My battery: Has 1189 Cycles, about 69% health. From fully charged, it'll last roughly 1.5-2.5 hours depending on whether I'm just surfing the web or using CS5.
About a month ago, I got the "Replace battery soon" message, that's fine, its 5 years old and past 1000 cycles. However, do I really need to replace my battery once this message comes up? I've had no other issues charging it etc. Everything runs just like new, disregarding the fact that it's on it's third hard disk. I'm really just concerned about any software issues that may be a result of not replacing it, and if these batteries are prone to swelling when they die.(like old school LiPo's when I used to race electric r/c cars)
I apologize for my lack of knowledge!

I have a mid-2009 15" 2.66Ghz core 2 duo model and my daughter has a 13" mid-2009 2.26GHz core 2 duo. I just replaced my original battery and she had her battery replaced a few years ago when she was well over 1000 cycles. The machines work fine with the battery in the "replace soon" condition, apart for limited time off A/C.  It is true that at some point the battery may begin to swell (also may not - none of ours swelled), you may notice this as a problem with the trackpad button push.
However, putting in a new battery really breathed life back into both computers. It is refreshing and liberating to be able to use them for long periods off A/C without worry, it is how they were intended to be used. The mid-2009 Macbook Pro's are now in the "venerable" stage and a new battery at this point will, in all likelihood, last long enough that the machines will no longer be useful when the batteries need replacing again. The $129 Apple charges is well worth it. As an alternative I got a third party battery from OWC that has more full charge than the original ever did. Ig it will last as many years as the Apple original I do not know yet. Link here: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Apple/Laptop/Batteries
