Do I need to replace my Hard Drive?

My Mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro recently was not able to boot on startup when I reset the NVRAM. I looked on the commands and there was something to do with a hard drive error. I had to reinstall OS X for me to use it again.
Since then my computer has been unusably laggy at times and performance has dropped. YouTube and other videos will lag uncontrollably and Minecraft runs at about 1 FPS. I am also running bootcamp and problems are consistent on Windows 7 as well. Do I need to replace the Hard Drive or just completely reformat it and reinstall OS X from a bootable disk?
THANKYOU

You shoudn't consider replacing your drive unless you know that's the problem. AHT, to the best of my knowledge, does not do surface scans on drives and it can't tell you if you have bad sectors. It can, however, identify other problems so running tests on the system might help you.
Other things to consider are the following:
How much free disk space do you have? If you're running out of disk space the system will not be able to swap out properly or easily and your system will bog down.
How much memory are you using? If you're using a lot then swapping will be rampant and your system will slow down.
Are there problematic applications that don't work properly that are consuming too much memory or hitting your system with a lot of disk reads and writes?
If you're using Mountain Lion, have you upgraded to 10.8.4? If not, do so. A lot of your problems may disappear.
The easiest way to check the first 3 above is with Activity Monitor. You can find a good write up on it with the following link:
http://www.scsc-online.com/Activity%20Monitor.html
I'm sure there are others on the web that are every bit as good as well. If you're still convinced your drive is the problem then check out this link for a list of drive testing tools:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1544280
That list is pretty much the web's de facto standard list of reliable hard drive testing tools currently available for Macs, and it's reasonably up to date, unlike some of the other lists on the web that are 5 years old or older. I really wouldn't assume it's the drive until you check out other stuff first.
Good luck, diddypants.

Hello, I am having a macbook air early 2008 and it is having a hard drive failure i need to replace the hard drive is it possible ? the hard drive number is HS082HB could you please help !!

You can replace it with a solid state drive, see the one OWC sells here.  The video on how to install it is here.
iFixit.com has used hard drives available here.
If it were me, I'd go with a solid state drive, as the prices have come down recently and the performance improvement is noticeable.

I have been talking online with your representative since March 2011 but being unable to locate the actual receipt from Royal Computers & Accessories in Jamaica despite identifying the transaction on my bank statement, HP not willing to honour the warranty.  Hence, I am trying to replace the hard drive by purchasing it on amazon.  Can I please get the correct specs on the type of hard drive I should buy.  If I could get a 500g instead I would prefer that size.

    Hi,
See the maintenance and service guide for your laptop: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01758220.pdf
There are listed all compatible hard drive (size and rpm). You can buy a 500GB 5400rpm hard drive as a replacement. I recommend Western Digital hard drives: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-Drive-WD5000BEVT/dp/B001JSSDGU/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8...
I have got this hard drive as a replacement for my old damaged so it should work..

  • I need to replace the hard drive in my HP Pavilion dv6405, where can I find a replacement?

I was given this computer, first I had to contact your board to unlock because I had no password for Power on, I got it unlocked with your help, and I thank you for your help, but the hard drive must have failed because it says there is no hard drive. Do you know where I could get a replacement for it? Or is it even worth fixing?

    Hi:
First run the hard drive diagnostics found in the BIOS to see what it reports.
If it also reports no hard drive found or reports errors with the disk, the hard drive is probably dead.
I had posted the link to the service manual on your other question regarding the password.
I highly recommend you open the hard drive bay and see if there is a hard drive in there now.
If there isn't, you will not only need a new hard drive, but also the caddy which it needs to be connected to the PC's motherboard.
If the notebook has a hard drive, then you can get any SATA II notebook hard drive. I would not go beyond 320 GB for that model.
This site has hard drives at very reasonable prices.
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Drives
Then you just remove the caddy from the old hard drive and transfer it to the new one.
You will also need recovery disks to install the operating system and programs that shipped with the PC.
Please read the info at the link below on how to order recovery disks.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=bph07143#N76
If HP no longer has them for your model, then you can order them from this non-HP vendor. You will need to know if the model is a dv6405us or dv6405ca.
    http://www.computersurgeons.com/SearchProducts.aspx
If you discover your PC does not have a hard drive or caddy, it would be best if you ordered a drive from HP (one of the ones listed in chapter 3 of the service manual). I believe they come with the caddy.

  • Help, I need to replace my hard drive in my hp pavilion a6863w how do i do this?

The hard drive surface test and seek test failed,  A seagate 2TB SSHD. I want to install it and I am sure I can do it but I need to know if I should leave the bad drive in and just add this one, if I do this will I need any other cables, if so, I would rather just take out the old.
I have the recovery install discs that I made when I first bought it. I have used these b4 to reinstall.
I just need to know the steps if I add the 2nd drive or the steps (if I need a cable) to replace the old drive with the new drive. Would this drive be considered my boot drive? When I ask for the steps, I am more concerned with the turning off the computer and what things I need to unplugged, etc. Then once the new drive is in place, do I simply run the recovery discs or is there an easier way?
I tried to run a backup but it stopped and wouldn't let me. I have all my important things like photo's movies, etc already backed up.

  • Need to replace failing hard drive but I don't have RnR discs

The hard drive has started to fail on my brand new T500 with WIn7 Pro pre-installed. I have not had time to create RnR discs. Lenovo support says they are ready to ship a new hard drive but there is a problem getting the RnR discs put together with the drive for me. When the drive first started to fail, I tried to create the RnR DVDs but it seemed to be going nowhere.  I got 1 DVD created that I was told to label "Final SP". What is that?  There is next to no information available describing the process, but I'd like to take another crack at it in case there is a major delay in Lenovo replacing my drive and providing RnR discs.  Any idea how long it should take and how many DVDs? Any suggestions??
    Thanks.

  • Need to replace my hard drive, no response from hp in 5 days

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion Touchsmart 15b146ef in France some months ago (still under warranty) and my hard disk drive in now dead. I ran a hard drive short DST check test which failed with the following failure ID : 60D5XV-6MQ6TA-MFPWW1-60QX03. It's a 303 error meaning that I have no other choice than replace my HDD. The problem is that I'm in Sweden for my studies and no one from HP is able to help me (in France and in Sweden).
What can I do ? Does anyone have a direct email contact that I could use to speak with the HP Support Sweden ?
Thanks for reading and for answering if possible

I can't reach the HP Support Sweden service (tried 5 days long). Do you have any contact? Sorry but NO, I don't have any contact information other than what is publicly available.
And I don't have any CD/DVD driver on my computer, how can I do without having to buy an external CD/DVD reader? On today's computers, a 32GB USB Flash Drive can replace Recovery Discs. If the computer can still boot and the Recovery partition is not corrupted, you may be able to create a USB Recovery Flash Drive.

  • Do I need to replaced my hard drive?

For the second time this month I am restoring from Time Machine due to disk errors. The current restore has been running for 2 days and still has 30 hours for an estimate.

    Barbara Daniels1 wrote:
I'd guess that the Time Machine backups might be corrupted - if the data was backed up from a corrupted hard drive? So, I wouldn't even do that unless I had a known "clean" earlier backup?
It's possible, but doubtful. Time Machine backups and restores are file-level, not block-level, so directory problems, etc., will usually make the process fail, rather than being copied.
But it does happen on occasion that a file damaged internally will be coped, and of course if something gets deleted, it won't be copied at all. Since it apparently restored ok, the backups are probably ok.
Most likely, you're right about it being a problem with the internal HD.

  • How do I know if I need to replace a hard drive

I have a HP Pavilion Slimline s5212y with Windows 7. My computer shut down with no error messages. Tried rebooting using F10 where I see the HArdware Diagnostics screen and then the computer dies. I don't get to run a repair or any diagnostics. Yet the button I use to start the computer stays blue and the only way to try the restart again is by pulling the plug. What might be the problem and is there any way to recover. I do have an external backup.

  • I need to replace my Hard drive.

I have a 60 gig internal that is starting to make noise and fail slowly. I went ahead and bought a 100 gig, 4200 rpm 2.5" drive to replace it. What is the best way to transfer the data? Can I copy everything (including programs) onto an external drive and copy to the new once it's installed? Do I have to reinstall all the programs from cd's? I assume I'll re install tiger from the CD. Everything else?
    Thanks in advance.

After some reading I Decided to try using "Restore" from the disk utility to make a clone to the external, then use it again to clone it back (after formatting) Do you all see any drawbacks in that? How is it different from using Super Duper et al.?
I realized that I also have a copy of Data rescue if needed.

  • Do I Need To Be Concerned With SATA When Replacing A Hard Drive?

    Hi,
I have an early 2008 15" MacBook Pro running on Snow Leopard, and need to replace the hard drive.
I'm pretty certain I saw somewhere on this forum that I have to be concerned with SATA, i.e,., 1.5Gb/s.
Does anyone know if this is true?
    Thank you.

All SATA HDDs are backward compatible.  If it is the correct form factor, 2.5" diameter and 9.5 MM thick, it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Can I replace internal hard drive using only my system recovery disc?

Hello Everyone and thank you so much for your help!
I have a Vista Desktop and have determined that I need to replace the hard drive.
I am hoping that I can set the jumper pin on the new hard drive to primary, remove the old drive, install the new drive and turn on the computer with the System Recovery (SR) Disc in my DVD drive, boot off of the SR Disc, and run the SR.  Will this work or am I just dreaming?
On thing that might cause issues is that the original hard drive is 640GB, and it is no longer available, so the new one I have is 500GB..Everything else about the 2 drives is the same.  Old drive: WD6400AAKS, New Drive: WD5000AAKS.
Thank you extra much for any advise you can provide!
    Cindy
P.S.. In case it would be helpful to know why I think I need to replace the hard drive...in the mornings when I go to turn the computer on, the hard drive activity light never flashes even a single time and the computer doesn't boot.  Through trial and error I have figured out that by doing this:
    1) removing power from the computer
    2) disconnect then reconnect both connectors to the hard drive
    3) reconnect power to the computer
    4) depress the computer On button
that  the computer will boot and all is good for the day.  However, I turn off the computer at night and the next morning have to follow the above procedure.  Only removing power from the computer for 30+ minutes does not work, it seems to be necessary to disconnect the hard drive connectors.
This all started at the same time I got a virus on the computer that I was supposedly able to remove.
I have done the following to try to resolve the problem with no success:
    1) Ran the diagnostics and passed all Tests, tests say hard drive is okay. (day 1)
    3) Cleared the CMOS by removing the battery on mother board (day 1)
    2) Did a System Recovery (day 2)
    3) Ran Boot.exe /FixMbr (day 3)
    4) Ran Boot.exe /FixBoot (day 4)
    5) Ran Boot.exe/rebuild bcd (day 5)
I am thinking I must also have a virus on the boot sector that did not get written over when I did the System Recover...but I am a novice computer geek, so I know I could have missed something. :-)

Its easy Pal! You check your HDD first but not in the way you did. Just follow the steps with your old HDD.
    1. Try a clean install(delete the partitions while installing OS) of other OS like linux or XP or Windows 7.
    2. If it works properly the your HDD is OK.
    3. Then work for some days with the OS installed to check the condition of HDD.
    4. If any problem happens then you need to buy a new one or if its recently bought, go for RMA.
    5. If there is no problem, then do a clean install(delete the partitions while installing OS) with your Vista Recovery.
    6. Use a Better Security with MSE/Avira/Trand Micro
For Replacing with a different HDD, you must consult nearest HP Service Point for the change in your hardware configuration, so that they will register with Microsoft with the new HDD.
Note: Give the old and new HDD to HP Service Point employee.

  • How do I replace a hard drive in 1625CDT?

I need to replace the hard drive in a 1625CDT. I have a drive, but can't figure out how to get the case open. I also can't find any support documents with instructions how to do this.
Can anyone supply directions to do this?
Please don't tell me to take it to a service center. I'm a PC tech and know how to work on computers... just not this laptop.
I just need directions on how to get inside the case to the HD. Email me offline if need be.
    Thanks

    Hi Roger
Well, if you are a PC technician so it should be not very difficult for you to change the HDD. A assembling of all notebooks is very similar and it should be possible for you to change or to find the HDD without any detailed instruction.
But nevertheless I will try to help you:
Before starting the procedure please remove the battery.
Then remove the keyboard. To remove the keyboard please remove the Strip cover. The System Status Indicator Panel is designed to snap-fit
into place. Do not use excessive force to remove or replace it.
Remove the 3 screws on the unit button. (There are mark K around the screw hole). Remove the four screws holding the keyboard in place.
    Now gently lift the keyboard.
Pull the keyboard FPC connector and T/P FPC connector safety lock in upward direction.
Then remove the Combo Module 1 screw. Remove the ram door.
Remove the Combo Module screw (M2.5+18FP) holding the Combo Module in place.
Pull up the Combo Module FPC connector.
Then the Combo Module will be pulled out, you can easily take out the Combo Module entirely easily
Remove the System Status Indicator Panel. The System Status Indicator Panel is designed to snap-fit into place. Do not use excessive force to remove or replace it.
Remove the four screws holding the keyboard in place.
Now gently lift the keyboard, placing it face down on the touch pad. Take care that you dont damage the ribbon cable attached to the keyboard.
Remove the two screws (M2.5+4FP) securing the hard drive in place.
Grip the hard drive at the end of the drive carriage. With firm even pressure, slide the hard drive in the direction indicated, you will feel it disconnect. Now lift the HDD out of the bay. Store your HDD Module in a safe, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
Hope this will help you ;)

  • Is it worth replacing a hard drive on a 2007 IMAC

Just had my 2007 IMAC to the genius bar and found out that I need to replace the hard drive in order to use it at all (i believe I will not be able to recover anything that was on it). sooooooooo......
Should I have the hard drive removed and recycle the computer?
Should I have the hard drive removed and sell it on ebay?
Should I have the hard drive removed and reolaced in order to use it?

Depends on what you can afford.  If you need to use it for a little while longer get an external, 7200 rpm,  FW 800 hard drive and boot from it till you're ready to get a new iMac.  Then the external HD can be used to restore your files to the new Mac and then can be used for a backup drive.

  • How do you replace a hard drive on a xserve raid

I am running an old xserve (10.3.9) I need to replace one hard drive in my raid set. I have a new hard drive exactly the same as the one I am replacing. Do I have to do anything in raid admin (version 1.2) or once I insert the new hard drive will it just start working and the other drives will start talking and writing data to it? Thanks for any help!

    Hi
Slightly confused about what it is you actually have?
Do you mean an XServe like this one here:
    http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=XServe&num=10&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1433&bih=856&tbm= isch&tbnid=VXlw7-KP6nEsaM:&imgrefurl=http://inertz.org/2008/01/xserve-an-impress ive-multitude-of-potential-used-server/&docid=HT9gRAJQrNrS8M&imgurl=http://inert z.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/xserveg5.jpg&w=600&h=361&ei=9YPQUI6dLeX-4QTwloC 4Dw&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=639&sig=102214044775849835144&page=1&tbnh=144&tbnw=242&st art=0&ndsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0,i:124&tx=152&ty=81
You can't/don't use RAID Admin on an XServe.
Or do you mean an XServe RAID like this one here:
    http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=XServe&num=10&hl=en&tbo=d&biw=1433&bih=856&tbm= isch&tbnid=-wl73CtlayTBlM:&imgrefurl=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Xserve_RA ID.jpg&docid=9pxrypAvxoLK-M&imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons /0/06/Xserve_RAID.jpg&w=1296&h=416&ei=9YPQUI6dLeX-4QTwloC4Dw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx= 709&vpy=345&dur=119&hovh=127&hovw=397&tx=170&ty=57&sig=102214044775849835144&pag e=1&tbnh=81&tbnw=252&start=0&ndsp=35&ved=1t:429,r:11,s:0,i:148
If it's the above simply remove the drive module and assuming you have a replacement drive module and drive, insert the new drive module. If you only have the drive, release the plastic moulding at the foot of the removed drive module, release the screws, remove the drive and reverse the process to install the new drive. Insert the module and the rebuild should happen immediately and you can use it normally while all this is happening. Depending on how much data you have stored on the unit, performance loss should be minimal. I would monitor the progress using RAID Admin.
As ever try and make sure you have a full and effective back-up handy just in case.
If it's an XServe you're going to have to provide more information as what you do will depend a little on how the RAID set was created.
    HTH?
    Tony
